Thank you, thank you very much is the preferred formula for presenters when wrapping up an event. We choose once again the same formula to say goodbye to 2011 because, my beloved friends, this is this year’s last edition. Once again we thank our advertisers whose support makes it possible for us to see the light of day and to set foot in the streets, visiting your home every week. Thank you also to each one of our dedicated collaborators for their selfish, and many times poorly paid, work. And particularly to our kind readers that encourage us to continue our task of keeping alive the history and beat of the thriving Hispanic community of Delaware. So thank you, thank you very much. For instance I remember a nice grandma that in a meeting a couple of days ago told me with a great smile, “it is a pleasure to finally meet you, I’ve been reading your newspaper for a long time and I really like it, I find it very interesting.” Those are the moments when one think, thank God someone’s reading us! There’s another piece of news we all have to be very happy about, and it is the announcement President Barack Obama made regarding the end if the Iraq War. Congratulations to the thousands of families that will finally receive their sons and daughters for the Christmas dinner and the New Year celebration. It is true that the future in Iraq is not very clear, but as many others believe, it is now time for the Iraqis take control of their country and move forward, or who knows, maybe backwards. Because it is time to accept that the world is somewhat different from what we see in TV, and you talk and you eat, you live, you suffer and you enjoy in different ways in many places. There is something that the millions of inhabitants of this planet subject to the sidereal movement do share, and that is that each year the cycle of the Earth around the Sun comes to its end and we begin, if we are lucky enough, a new year, which we hope this year will be at least a little bit better. With some sort of naivety, a friend asked me if it was true that now the money that was being spent on the useless war of Iraq will be invested to pull this country out of the crisis. I don’t think that such beauty can be true, but we must, we have to be optimist about the future and wish us the best among ourselves. So my dear friends, once again, thank you, thank you very much and we’ll see you next year. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

educar mejor a nuestros niños.

The Dual Program Will Remain.
Lewis Elementary dual language teaching program will keep on working through a decision made by the Educational Board of Red Clay’s School District.
After a stormy meeting with the school parents on Monday, December 12th, where parents flatly refused to the elimination of the program and for it to be considered the reason Lewis is failing from an academic standpoint. The arguments included the fact that it has not been proven that the program itself is the cause of the problem and that in the proposal to be delivered to the Department subjects in English and Spanish would not exist anymore. Just as we could gather in the Q&A session, parents disagree that the dual program be eliminated, despite all the problems it might have, and that families were not given neither time nor the opportunity to dispute this decision. One mother asked, why was this so sudden, and why are you telling our children that they cannot speak Spanish? To clarify this point the director explained that by federal mandate the school must have its students be able to speak well English by 2014; if this is not achieve, the school must close, and there is a misconception here because teachers cannot ask the children not to speak Spanish in school. “We must make sure that this never occurs, not here or in any other school, and that is accepted by Mr. Daugherty, the District Superintendent who is sitting here,” stressed the moderator Ariadna Castañeda. In this respect, Jillian Wattley, who is not precisely a Hispanic, said very clearly that is ids not correct not to consider the opinion of the parents to make a decision of this nature. Addressing Superintendent Daugherty she said: “If you as administrators have failed to make out of this unique program a success, then we must take this issue to the Secretary of Education, and if necessary, to the Governor. We want our dual program and that’s it.” She also added something very interesting, “What are we going to do now, at the middle of a school year, to have our children really learn another language?” Recapping we must mention that the next day, in a second meeting with the parents, Mr. Daugherty informed to the parents and teachers community that after having consulted with the Secretary of Education Lowery, they had decided to keep the dual program, adding that some corrections are to be made.

of Education, parents participation was not taken into account. We must recall that Lewis Elementary poor academic results lead the state’s Secretary of Education to include it in the Partnership Zone (PZ) program, aiming to perform a deep transformation in this school as well as others that also exhibit results’ problems. On Monday evening the school’s director Maribeth Courtney gave a technical explanation that was not well understood by the attendees. There are five stress areas in the plan presented to the Department of Education: The first area is: Curriculum, instruction and evaluation. Teacher will receive more professional development in SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol). They will have 13 more days of professional development tan they had in the past, starting next school year. Another change will be that the program DreamBox will be used to improve the mathematics area through internet. The second focus area will be the teachers and leaders efficiency, where teachers will have more time to plan and they will be compensated if they improve the results of the state exams. The third focus area is additional learning time. Regarding this point, Lewis will offer enrichment programs during the summer for all students in the areas of mathematics and reading, for which all participants will have transportation as well as breakfast and lunch. Tutoring will also be offered to all students for the next 3 years. The fourth focus area refers to the capacity of flexible functioning in the school’s routines, like for instance different breakfast schedules so students can better manage their time. And the fifth area refers to the commitment of the families and the community, which is critical in this plan because it will define how the schools will work with the families to improve it, which includes a literacy center for parents, to give them the resources to be able to work with their kids at home. During the Q&A session it became clear that the teaching program (50-50) of all contents of the

Superintendent Mervin B. Daugherty, “the dual teaching program will continue and we will do everything within our power to comply with federal standards for the benefit of our children.”

Idolina García and Miguelina Almonte, asked its members to “help us to maintain our language alive, we want our children to have the opportunity to be bilingual.”

This decision was made official with the approval of the School Board that was held Wednesday evening where by unanimous voting it was decided to maintain the dual teaching program in both languages. Addressing the Board Idolina García and Miguelina Almonte, mothers of Lewis’ students, asked its members to “help us to maintain our language alive, we want our children to have the opportunity to be bilingual.” In turn, Wilmington’s 5th District Hispanic Council Member Sammy Prado said: “I’m very concerned about the decision to eliminate the Dual Language Program at Lewis Elementary School. This program was the result of many years of work by Hispanic leaders in an effort to better educate our children. I feel that Red Clay has rushed through this process and seems a bit too willing to eliminate dual language without at least trying to improve it. I believe that Red Clay should continue the Dual Language Program at least until the end of the school year until a better solution is found.” Caridad Alonso, who was elected teacher of the year in 2007 said, “I believe in the saying that goes ‘a bilingual person is worth two.’ I wholeheartedly believe it because I am. English can help you achieve success, but if you also speak other language, your opportunities are even greater. Being bilingual is not just simply to speak two languages. Is to have the capacity to read, write and speak in two languages. I am very happy to hear that Lewis Elementary will continue to be a dual language school, where our children will have the opportunity to really be bilingual and bicultural.” In turn, Superintendent Mervin B. Daugherty, who prefers to be called Merv, humbly accepted that they took a road without having sufficiently consulted with the school’s families and stated, “the dual teaching program will continue and we will do everything within our power to comply with federal standards for the benefit of our children.” “The state believes Lewis should remain a dual-language program and will work with the district to refine the plan it submits Dec. 23,” said Dan Cruce, the state deputy secretary of education to Nichole Dobo, The News Journal reporter. Typically, the state and districts make changes to plans after they are submitted until the two sides can agree on a path forward. We cannot leave out the fact that this time the community was heard, and at the same time, the parents’ commitment to improve the program must become a reality in the near future, a commitment with the future of their children.

“¿Me recuerdas?

Grown-Up Christmas List
As I grow older, I feel that I no longer get “stressed” out about Christmas. Actually, I have mellowed out so much that I surprise myself. I seem to reminisce more about Christmases gone by and the people that made them so special for me and for others. Unfortunately, many of those loved ones are no longer among us and those that are, well, they live so far away that financially makes it impossible for us to reunite, but nevertheless, they are all remembered and loved deeply. I am also feeling that we have allowed our consumerist society to take away the fun and the values of this special time of the year. It seems as everything is about the entitlement of receiving material things wrapped as beautiful gifts that one day of the year, which is not our birthday. All the focus seems to be about those darn gifts. I remember that as a child, my mother made me and my brother write a list of three (3) things we wished or dreamed to have for Christmas. Then, she would always say “for sure, you will receive one (1) of those items that are on your Christmas list.” By the way, I need to disclose that even though I was raised a Catholic, I am no longer a Christian by faith, but no matter what I believe to be my truth today, I will always celebrate and call this time of the year Christmas and not the Holidays or the Seasons, I know that I am being “politically incorrect,” but I have been accused of worst things. I believe now, as I did then, this is the time set aside to celebrate many wonderful things with family, friends and loved ones, no matter what your faith may be. So, when on Christmas morning you are gathered among family and loved ones, I share with you the words of one of my favorite David Foster song, that is sang by Amy Grant, which clearly spells out the way I feel… “Do you remember me; I sat upon your knee, and wrote to you with childhood fantasies. Well I’m all grown up now, and still need help somehow, I’m not a child, but my heart still can dream. So here’s my lifelong wish my grownup Christmas list, not for myself but for a world in need. No more lives torn apart, that wars would never start and time would heal all hearts. Everyone would have a friend, and right would always win, and love would never end. This is my grownup Christmas list. As children we believed the grandest sight to see, was something lovely wrapped beneath our tree. Well, heaven surely know that packages and bows can never heal a hurting human soul. What is this illusion called innocence and youth? Maybe only in our blind belief can we ever find the truth.” May your Christmas be filled with the magic of love.

WhO’s LOOkiNG OUt fOr YOUr heALth CAre NeeDs? By Janet Trautwein Officials recently released 244 pages’ worth of regulations governing the health-insurance exchanges established by the federal health reform law. The rules envision a big role for “navigators” -- entities or people expected to help consumers evaluate their health insurance options in the exchanges. Some groups intend for navigators to replace the folks who currently help consumers with their insurance needs -- licensed, professional health insurance agents. That would be a disaster. Although it will take many different voices to let people who are uninsured today know about the health insurance options available in 2014, expanding the role of navigators from promoting program availability to enrolling and advising people about specific plans is a consumer hazard. These navigators will lack not only the expertise, training, and licensing that agents possess but also sufficiently strong incentives to serve in an advisory capacity. So who will these navigators be? That’s not yet apparent -- and will vary from state to state. The law specifically lists agents and brokers as groups that may be navigators. But the law’s financial requirements would force most agents and brokers to disrupt their business models and could prevent them from serving current clients who might be ineligible to purchase coverage through the exchanges. So it’s doubtful that many will participate in the navigator program. They may instead try to work with the exchanges in more traditional ways. The proposed exchange rules also specify that at least some of the navigators must be “consumer-focused” or “community-based.” In other words, they’ll need to demonstrate an existing relationship to consumers. Observers believe that trade, industry, and professional organizations; unions; chambers of commerce; and small-business development centers could be among the groups that serve as navigators. That makes sense. Their relationships will be important in educating the public about new insurance opportunities in 2014. Many are likely to have expertise with outreach to specific populations. But it’s safe to assume that most will not be qualified to perform the work of agents and brokers, who have been linking consumers to appropriate health insurance policies for decades. Agents and brokers must already comply with state licensing and continuing education requirements in order to advise consumers about health insurance options. This important consumer protection is expected to continue. How would navigators be paid? Although states must have navigator programs, no federal funds can be used for their payments, which are described as grants. It’s unclear whether states must come up with this grant funding, how much these grants would be, or how they would work. With some 42 states and the District of Columbia facing budget shortfalls in 2012, most states won’t have the money to support the sort of robust navigator program the drafters of the law envisioned. And what exactly will navigators do? The law says they will focus on public education, outreach to special populations, and facilitating health-plan enrollment. But the navigator program’s goals do not include providing plan-year-to-plan-year assistance to consumers regarding the functionality of their health coverage. By contrast, that’s an integral part of private health insurance agents’ jobs and business models. Agents and brokers aim to keep their clients for life and have financial incentives as private business owners to furnish them with ongoing service. Agents hold seminars to educate employees, fight to make sure claims are paid, and help their clients find the right doctors and healthcare providers. The Congressional Budget Office has reported that many insurance agents even function as virtual human resources departments for small businesses. It’s no wonder that those who have worked with agents have been satisfied. A 2007 IBM survey found that 75 percent of those who employed agents held favorable views of them. More than half cited “personalized experience” as what they liked most about their insurance broker. Every day, agents go above and beyond the call of duty. Their livelihood depends on it. Consider the case of Idaho resident Anne Marie G., who publicly lauded the efforts of her agent Brooks Mathern to handle “indecipherable” paperwork and claims in the wake of the birth of her child. Or take Maryland broker Marcia Friedman, who through diligent research found a way to get additional coverage for a 10-year-old autistic girl who had exhausted her family’s mental health coverage. These are the sorts of problems that agents and brokers have solved for years -- and that navigators will be poorly equipped to deal with. Millions of consumers depend on insurance agents to help them secure high-quality coverage for their families -- and to advocate on their behalf even after they pay their premiums. Navigators may try to imitate agents, but they’ll never be able to duplicate them. Janet Trautwein is CEO of the National Association of Health Underwriters. A NAtiONAL seCUritY threAt? This letter liberally references Brig. Gen. Jim Cash’s article entitled “Another Government Cover-up” in the January 2011 edition of Military. I agree with his assessment that the contrail observed off the coast of California in November 2010 resembled a missile launch contrail, not an aircraft contrail. In the 1980’s Brig. Gen. Cash was a command director and assistant director of operations for the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD). NORAD is responsible for the detection and reporting of aircraft and missile threats to the President for action. Brig. Gen. Cash was a USAF fighter pilot for over 25 years. Why did the Obama administration put out information that the contrail recorded off the California coast was made by an aircraft. My initial reaction was the contrail came from an inadvertent launch of a missile by one of our Navy’s surface ships or a submarine. Although this continues to be a possibility, I believe the likelihood of this event is somewhat remote because of the number of people who would have been aware of this occurrence. The other possibility is the launch came from a foreign submarine, probably Russian or Chinese, which went undetected across the Pacific Ocean to our coastline. If it was a missile launch from a Russian or Chinese submarine, it calls into question our ability to detect the approach of potential threats to our national security and our ability to defend this country. It should also alert our President, the Secretary of Defense and Congress to the increasing capabilities of foreign militaries, especially Chinese and Russian armed forces; and the need to maintain a strong U.S. military establishment. We should not be cutting back our military forces in the face of a threatening environment. I agree with Brig. Gen. Cash. The integrity of our administration is under scrutiny and “once again the leader of this nation chose to disguise the truth and keep the American people in the dark on an issue that possibly constitutes a major threat to the entire U.S. population.”

Assimilation Tomorrow
How America’s Immigrants will integrate by 2030
>Dowell Myers and John Pitkin New studies by scholars from both liberal and conservative think tanks conclude that members of the great wave of contemporary immigration, who flocked here in the 1990s, are integrating into U.S. society at a healthy clip and are more assimilated than their brethren in other countries. Immigrants are following the path of their predecessors and assimilating just as rapidly today as they did in the past, and are on track to achieve great successes by 2030. Many questions remain about the newcomers with such a rise in immigration and new immigrant destinations: Will they learn English? Are they locked in poverty? What are their prospects for success in America? Most importantly, will today’s immigrants fully integrate to become tomorrow’s Americans? For answering this question the Center for American Progress in November 14th, released a first-ofits-kind study that projects today’s immigrants’ integration patterns through the year 2030. The report, “Assimilation Tomorrow: How America’s Immigrants Will Integrate by 2030,” is authored by Dowell Myers, professor in the School of Policy, Planning, and Development at the University of Southern California, and John Pitkin, senior research associate in the USC Population Dynamics Research Group. Myers’s report finds that at astonishingly high levels, immigrants are projected to learn English, buy homes, acquire citizenship, and attain solid economic footing in the United States. The authors of “Assimilation Tomorrow” track the cohort of immigrants that arrived during the 1990s, a decade of robust levels of immigration. Among the most important findings, the authors illustrate that while only 25.5 percent of immigrants from the cohort owned their own homes in 2000, by 2030, 70.3 percent are projected to own their own homes, on par or slightly higher than the homeownership rate among the native-born. As Myers commented at a recent Center for American Progress event, “This is the American Dream … and that achievement is something you don’t hear about very often, because it doesn’t support an agenda held by restrictionists.” Rather than hinder the economy, immigrants will increasingly become the future homebuyers of America, helping to jump-start our housing market. Hispanic immigrants as well are projected to make great strides. Contrary to the assertions of some who argue that Hispanic immigrants are not assimilating and will not assimilate to American life, the authors find that these newcomers follow the same upward trajectory as immigrants overall, albeit from a lower starting point. Homeownership, for example, jumps from 21 percent of the Hispanic immigrant population in 2000 to 67 percent in 2030. Another indicator of interest from a political standpoint is immigrants’ naturalization rates that similarly rise from 13 percent to a substantial 70.6 percent by 2030. These remarkable achievements are based on long-term settlement and deep roots in America. CAP Vice President for Immigration Policy and Advocacy Angela Kelley notes, “This research is a must-read for any policymaker who is concerned that America’s newcomers aren’t becoming new Americans and for politicians who think the immigrant community can be ignored.” This report demonstrates the great potential of immigrant residents. Immigrants do not remain mired in their status as newcomers but surge ahead on many scores. Their progress has been extraordinary and it could become even greater but for the growing number of obstacles placed in the path of many immigrants.

Team from the Latin American Center Participates in Robotics Competition.

No estuvo mal.

On Saturday December 10th the event Ramp Riot 2011 was held, sponsored by the First Lego League of Delaware, in the Conrad School of Science, where the team Techiemoebotics of the Latin American Community Center of Wilmington –composed by 10 kids and two trainers- finished number eight in the first round, number 10 in the second round and number 17 in the third one. “We finished 17th in the 39-team list. It wasn’t bad. They competed at their fullest potential. The team was very competitive,” told trainer Steve Villanueva to El Tiempo Hispano. “We put together a team, to work on making Cow Milk our project discussion and research, being that so many things can come from and be made from milk.” They created a robot called Techiebot. “We did the research using the internet, where most of our information came from, and also by interviewing Mr. Steve. We learned that it can be very exciting and fun when everyone pulls together to gather information and ideas. We learned that many thoughts from many individuals are better than from one person. Better choices to choose from. We learned many things from the research about milk, cows...” said the team members.

Manhattan’s Block Structure
Venezuelan students take Manhattan

As part of the extracurricular activities of the School of Architecture Carlos Raúl Villanueva (EACRV) of the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV), the city drawing course took place in the city of Manhattan, New York. This activity was developed between November 30th and December 9th, 2011, with the participation of Venezuelan students directed by Miguel Acosta (Caracas), event coordinator and professor of Unit 9 of said school. Hola Delaware contributed with the academic and administrative platform for the development of the course with the attendance of Gabriel Pilonieta (Editor El Tiempo Hispano) and the architects Camila Crazut and César Salazar (New York). The course dealt with the analysis of the different types of blocks that make up the city, their functioning structure and the morphology they adopt in virtue of the natural laws and tensions of the urban space. In this sense, there were work sessions developed in the streets in bocks with important buildings and complexes like Rockefeller Center, the Empire State, the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), the Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET), with the objective of comparing the different ways blocks and buildings talk to each other and share an urban space. Likewise, each student enjoyed the city’s fascinating history by means of copying and analyzing its maps and old documents in the Public Library of New York, and determining its growth and place of origin, New Amsterdam. The experience ended with the drawings of the island of Manhattan from the ferry to Staten Island and a walk along the street of the old Northern wall (Wall Street) and the original pier (XVII century). This extracurricular activity emerges from the itinerant school concept, principle applied to the logic of teaching that stems from the confrontation with the landscape, the street, the architecture, the city, where teacher and student share, within the experience of the trip, the reality of a space built to face the space of new challenges in places like our country, Venezuela.

Choose a Healthier You for the Holidays
For many people, the holiday season brings more than joy – it can also bring unwanted pounds. Whether it’s your mom’s eggnog or Aunt Judy’s signature holiday cookies, it can be tough to pass up those favorite holiday foods you only taste once a year. After all, ’tis the season to indulge, right? Before you reach for that next gingerbread cookie, think about this: Extra pounds can affect more than your ability to fit into your holiday party apparel – being overweight can also increase your risk for cancer and other diseases. This holiday season, choose to put your health first. To stay well, the American Cancer Society recommends maintaining a healthy weight throughout life, staying active (at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity on five or more days of the week), eating a healthy diet emphasizing fruits and vegetables, and limiting the amount of alcohol you drink. Here are a few tips to enjoy a healthier holiday party: Get off to a good start. Don’t go to a party hungry. Snack on healthy, filling foods before you leave the house. You’ll be less tempted by high-calorie options if your stomach isn’t growling. Good preparty bets include a handful of nuts, an apple, or a half a turkey sandwich. Once you arrive, ask for a glass of water to help you feel full and avoid overindulging. And don’t head straight for the food – make a point of greeting friends or introducing yourself to new people. Think small. When it does come time to indulge, use a small, appetizer- or dessertsized plate and fill it first with healthy choices such as fresh fruit and veggies (go easy on the dip). Leave just a little space for a small sample of whatever decadent treat you’re craving, but eat that last, after you’ve filled up on the more nutritious offerings. Position yourself for success. If you’re standing by the buffet table or facing the food while seated, you’ll be tempted to “graze.” Turn your back to the table, and focus on having fun, not having food. Avoid alcohol. Not only are alcoholic beverages loaded with calories, but drinking them tends to weaken your resolve to eat better. However, if you decide to indulge, avoid heavy holiday drinks and stick with light beer or a glass of wine instead. In addition to making healthy eating choices this season, don’t forget to make time to exercise regularly. The flip side of eating more or indulging at parties is that, to avoid weight gain, you need to move more to burn those extra calories. Help create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by staying well and encouraging friends and family to do the same. For more tips on making healthy food choices, staying active year-round, and reducing your risk for cancer, visit ChooseYou.com or call your American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.

The Priority Boxes Art Series:
A Message of Peace and Hope
With labels that read “Fragile Contains: Peace, Love or Hope”, visual artist Franck de Las Mercedes sends abstractly painted, seemingly empty boxes to anybody, anywhere in the world, for free. The “Priority Boxes” project is a public art series that seeks to initiate dialogue on peace, challenge people to reconsider their ability to influence change and question the fragility, value and priority given to those concepts. Each box, sent by mail to anyone who requests one, is both a canvas for a unique abstract painting and a platform for communication through art. A mixture of art and activism, the boxes are sent free to convey that something of such priority as peace should not have a price and that art can be both inclusive and accessible to all. From his small New Jersey studio, the artist has sent over 10,000 boxes around the globe, to countries in every continent.

Since its beginning in 2006, the project has been funded by the artist and donations and has evolved into a movement that has been embraced by popular culture, the mainstream media, schools and art educators across America. De Las Mercedes is often invited to visit schools to meet with students and discuss the power of art and one’s personal ability to influence change. Students across the country, even from districts that don’t receive arts education due to cuts in funding, also build their own boxes and put their stamp on the internationally acclaimed project.
New Year: Stuck No More
Imagine you are driving your car at full speed on the highway.
Suddenly, you see a giant banner that says: Where are you heading to? You think about it but can’t remember your destination. Then, you realize you don’t know where you are going and hadn’t known that for a long time. That car is your life; a life without goals and clear objectives. That was my life 12 years ago. I knew I had many dreams, but I had taken the time to write them down or to make a plan to achieve them. Since I didn’t know where my life was heading to, I was pulled by circumstances and by the needs of others. Meanwhile, years were passing by, and I was feeling stuck and unsatisfied. Yet, I was not doing anything about it. It was as if I had gotten used to living in mediocrity. In December of 1999, two days before the change of century, I found an article written by David Fishman, which included a questionnaire for evaluating one’s life; it had questions for assessing the year that was passing and planning the next one. I felt motivated to answer it because I wanted to begin a plan for my life once and for all. I really wanted to invest myself in responding to the questionnaire as if my life depended on it, so I looked for a moment and place where I could be by myself and focus only on my personal analysis. Before beginning, I said a little prayer. I asked God to illuminate my mind because I really wanted to live fully this one and only life he had given me. I said: “Help me, my Lord, so I can be truthful to myself, so I can acknowledge the time that I wasted and can be brave enough to follow the dreams that you planted in my heart.” Today, almost 12 years later, I can say that since the moment I answered that questionnaire, my life changed. I dared to write things that looked impossible. For instance; I had never gone beyond the borders of my country Peru, nor could I afford to travel; yet, I wrote down a big dream I had: Travelling to the 5 Continents. Although I knew it was very unlikely, I also knew I had passion for travelling. The following year, magically, I received a full scholarship (including travel and expenses) to study English in India!!! In that moment, I recalled Paulo Coelho’s words in his book The Alchemist: ”When you dare to follow your dreams, the universe conspires to help you. “ I knew God’s hand was behind this great gift, but I also knew that when I decided to answer that questionnaire, I started doing my part. “Ask and you shall receive, “says the Bible, “knock and the door will be opened.” It doesn’t say that you should remain with folding hands waiting for things to happen. I had gone to the National Scholarship Institute of Peru to find out about international scholarships in my attempt to find ways to fulfill my dreams of travelling and studying. What I’m saying is that if I hadn’t done something about following my dreams, I would have never had the fantastic experience of visiting the Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, or of enjoying a 24-hours train journey from south India to New Delhi, or of getting to know international students from different parts of the world. Since then, every new year I do the ritual of answering the questionnaire, which I have elaborated a little more, pulling from my studies in Psychology and Life Coaching, so it can be used for reclaiming one’s dreams in life and coming up with ways to achieve them. I call it: Life Plan, and, my friends, it works! For instance, I have already travelled to 4 Continents and visited countries as interesting as Germany, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and United States, where I reside at the present. I had nothing when I decided to take the time to write my goals and objectives, I only had my dreams and a big desire to live fully. If you wish the same for your life and want to have the opportunity to answer the questionnaire that has helped me so much, I invite you to participate in the Retreat of Psychology and Life Coaching. This life changing retreat will be held in Newark, Delaware, in Spanish. Anyone can attend, no matter the age or level of education, the important thing is to be willing to improve your life and stop feeling stuck. Please, call Miguel Pizano at (302) 290-4134 or leave a message at (302) 576-4126 so we can call you back and give you more information. You can also visit us at www.masfelicidad.com. Petition to Revoke Rodney Baltazar’s License
Baltazar is not precisely one of the three wise men. He is a Puerto Rican doctor with an office in Middletown allegedly involved in a case of distribution of anabolic steroids.
According to the press office of Delaware’s Attorney General Beau Biden, which stated on December 13th that his office has filed two complaints calling on the Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline and the Secretary of State to immediately suspend the medical license and controlled substances registration of Rodney Baltazar, D.O. and to schedule a hearing to ultimately revoke his license and registration. “This individual allegedly abused his medical credentials to engage in serious criminal activity with serious consequences,” said Attorney General Biden. “An immediate suspension of his medical license and controlled substances registration is the only way to protect the public from further potential harm.” The Attorney General’s complaints, filed on December 5 and December 9, state that in April 2010, Baltazar was indicted in federal court in Florida on 20 counts of using his Delaware controlled substances registration to illegally distribute anabolic steroids. Baltazar was later indicted in federal court in Missouri in September 2011 on five counts of distributing more than $1.3 million worth of steroids and human growth hormone using his Delaware controlled substances registration. Additionally, Baltazar was disciplined by the New York State Board for Professional Medical Conduct in October 2010 for violating a court order to repay student loans. Citing these charges along with Baltazar’s failure to report them to the Board within 30 days as required by Delaware law, the complaints contend that his actions present an imminent danger to the public health and safety warranting an immediate temporary suspension of his license and controlled substances registration. Stating his illegal actions are detrimental to both the public health and the medical profession, the complaints cite Baltazar’s use of his Delaware controlled substances registration to issue prescriptions for dangerous drugs for non-therapeutic or diagnostic purposes, without conducting patient examinations and for no legitimate medical reason. He is also alleged to have deliberately failed to maintain records of his activity. In an article published in this same newspaper on 2007, Dr. Baltazar offered “Twenty pounds in 30 days for everybody,” with an almost alchemist procedure based on injections. Four years later, in September of this year, according to official reports, Baltazar was charged with 20 counts for selling steroids to undercover federal agents.

Posada is the Spanish word for “to take shelter” or “ to take in.” Christians throughout Latin America celebrate a novena before Christmas of meditations and feasts inviting participants to give shelter to the newborn King in their lives. The Hispanic communities are pleased to invite the entire community to take the Christ child in our hearts in inspiring Posada celebrations. DelaWare art muSeum PreSeNtS HoWarD Pyle: American master rediscovered. Howard Pyle (1853 – 1911) was one of America’s most popular illustrators and storytellers during a period of explosive growth in the publishing industry. A celebrity in his lifetime, Pyle’s widely circulated images of pirates, knights, and historical figures were featured in publications such as Harper’s Monthly and were admired by artists and authors like Vincent Van Gogh and Mark Twain. Yet, despite his widespread popularity, Pyle’s reputation has survived only among illustration scholars and enthusiasts. Until now his work has been virtually omitted from the larger story of art. In celebration of the centenary of Pyle’s death, the Delaware Art Museum is thrilled to present Howard Pyle: American Master Rediscovered, a major retrospective exhibition featuring 79 paintings and drawings created by Pyle between 1876 and 1910, on view November 12, 2011 – March 4, 2012. This exhibition presents a fresh perspective on Pyle’s familiar images, exploring his interaction with the art and culture of his time and effectively repositioning him within the broader spectrum of 19th-century art. This retrospective exhibition also marks the 100th anniversary of the Delaware Art Museum, which was founded in 1912 to preserve and exhibit Pyle’s work following his untimely death in November 1911. The Museum’s Centennial Celebration begins in November 2011 with the opening of Howard Pyle: American Master Rediscovered and ends in June 2013 with the exhibition Contemporary Illustrators Honor Howard Pyle. Public tours of Howard Pyle: American Master Rediscovered are available at 2:00 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday (starting November 12, 2011 and ending March 4, 2012). Spanish language tours will be offered at 1:00 p.m. on the following Sundays: January 8, February 5, and March 4 exPlore PreHiStoric life at DiNo Days on Dec. 27 and 28 The Delaware Museum of Natural History’s popular Dino Days presented by Bank of America return on Tuesday, Dec. 27 and Wednesday, Dec. 28.
