Apátrida, esa palabra tan extraña que implica que alguien no tiene patria, no tiene país, no tiene hogar ni espacio propio en el concierto de la naciones. Apátrida decía en el pasaporte de un sujeto al que encontré mientras llevaba a cabo la rutinaria visita a la policía durante mi residencia en España e intrigado le pregunte que quería decir eso, si se refería acaso a algún país del que no había escuchado nombrar hasta el momento, pero él me explicó que era palestino y como tal no tenía un país o nación que lo acogiera y de allí que su pasaporte dijera apátrida. Y resulta ser que hay un estatuto para los apátridas en las Naciones Unidas que fue ratificado el 28 de septiembre de 1954, un año antes de que yo naciera y califica al apátrida de la manera siguiente: “Cualquier persona a la que ningún Estado considera destinatario de la aplicación de su legislación”. Y se aplica para personas con la nacionalidad de estados desaparecidos que no han consolidado un estado sucesor como es el caso de los palestinos, también son la minoría étnica o de cualquier índole a los que el estado en que viven les niega el derecho a una nacionalidad propia como es el caso de los Mayas de Chiapas o de los Kurdos. En todo caso ser apátrida me resulta una de las situaciones más duras que puede vivir un ser humano, saberse parte de algo que todos los demás desconocen o niegan, una identidad que no corresponde a un techo o territorio propio. Y me refiero a este tema ahora en que en la Naciones Unidas se está discutiendo sobre el reconocimiento de Palestina como miembro de esa organización, ya que también los judíos han sufrido por siglos la avasallante fuerza de la persecución y el exterminio y al fin de cuentas el territorio que se discute ha pasado de las manos de unos a las de los otros y en el medio han quedado miles de seres humanos sufriendo las consecuencias de la intransigencia de las partes en conflicto. Nosotros los humanos comunes y corrientes no alcanzamos a entender la complejidad de una resolución como la de recomer a uno, sin ir en detrimento del otro, pero parece que la posición de Obama es un tanto de lavarse las manos cuando asegura que debe ser un acuerdo entre las partes y que poco puede hacer las Naciones Unidas para mediar en el asunto. “Las fronteras entre Israel y Palestina deben ser basadas en las de 1967 con intercambios de mutuo acuerdo, de manera que se establezcan fronteras seguras y reconocidas por los dos Estados”, al mismo tiempo el senador por Delaware Chris Coons, como presidente de la Subcomisión de Asuntos Exteriores para África, unió su voz a la del republicano Johnny Isakson para pedirle a 23 líderes de países africanos a que se opongan a la solicitud Palestina de que se les reconozca como estado en el seno de las Naciones Unidas, porque esto “iría en contra de la causa de la paz”. Es un tema delicado, es verdad, pero me trajo el recuerdo de ese apátrida en Barcelona que quería compartir con ustedes ya que hasta hoy en día no me puedo sacar de la cabeza la idea de cuán complicado puede ser viajar por el mundo con un pasaporte con el mote de apátrida en el frente, si debe ser muy duro en verdad. Stateless person: that strange concept applicable to people who are not citizens of any state, of any country, with no home or defined space in the concord of nations. Stateless person: that was the term stamped in a passport of a guy I met while carrying out the routine chore of visiting the police during my residence in Spain so –intrigued- I asked what did that mean? Did it refer to a country I have not heard about until then? But he explained to me that he was a Palestinian, and as such he didn’t have a country or nation that would take him in, and hence his passport said that. It just so happens that there is a statute in the United Nations, which was ratified on September 28 of 1954, a year before I was born, that defines a stateless person as someone “who is not considered as national by any State under operation of its law.” This applies to people whose state that gave them their previous nationality has ceased to exist and there is no successor state, as is the Palestinian’s case. It is also applicable to ethnic or any kind of minorities whose state denies them citizenship status in the country on whose territory they live, like the Mayans in Chiapas or the Kurds. In any event, to be a stateless person seems to me one of the toughest conditions a human being can live under, knowing you are part of something that everybody else fails to recognize or deny, an identity with neither own roof nor territory. And I am talking about this subject now that the United Nations is debating whether or not to recognize Palestine as a member of this organization, since also the Jews had suffered for centuries the overwhelming force of persecution and extermination, and after all, the territory at issue has passed from hand to hand, leaving in the middle thousands of human beings suffering the consequences of the intransigence of the parties in conflict. We run-of-the-mill humans fail to understand the complexity of a resolution that extinguishes one without going against the other, but it seems that Obama’s stance is somewhat to wash his hands when he states it must be an agreement between the parties and that little can the United Nations do to mediate in this matter. “The borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps, so that secure and recognized borders are established for both states.” At the same time Chris Coons, U.S. Senator for Delaware, as chair of the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on African Affairs, voiced together with Republican Johnny Isakson to ask 23 leaders of African countries to oppose the Palestinian’s drive to raise their status at the United Nations, because this “would run counter to the cause of peace.” This is a delicate subject, true, but it brought me back memories of that stateless person in Barcelona and I wanted to share it with you, for even today I haven’t been able to get off my head how complicated it must be to travel around the world with a passport stamped with the nickname of stateless person in its cover. Yes, it must be very hard indeed.

¡Toc, Toc los Scouts Llaman!
Los Boy Scouts de América buscan hispanos para unirse a su movimiento que construye un futuro mejor para los niños.
Desde hace algunos meses, Maritza González ha estado trabajando en dar a conocer el proyecto scout a la comunidad hispana, con el fin de incrementar el número de jóvenes hispanos que en la actualidad son sólo el 3% de los miembros de las 388 unidades de la península de Delmarva. La experiencia para Maritza comenzó por inscribir en el programa a su propio hijo, de seis años, quien ahora está muy, pero muy contento con asistir a las actividades que le ayudarán a abrir su camino, “Yo misma veo ahora muchas oportunidades para la educación de mi hijo ya que aquí le inculcan responsabilidad cívica, fortalecer su carácter, espíritu de servicios, a respetar y seguir órdenes, etc.”. Maritza, a pesar de su breve experiencia, ve que es una oportunidad magnífica para construir un futuro mejor para nuestros niños, sobre todo inculcándoles que es posible llegar donde se lo proponen a través del cultivo de la autoestima y valores familiares fuertes. “Lo que más me motivó”, explica González, “es que fortaleciendo a la familia es posible echar para adelante”. “Nos gustaría que las familias hispanas sepan que tenemos las puertas abiertas para ellas, interviene Cindy Olsavsky, Directora de Campo en la oficina de los scouts en Wilmington, y para hacer esto posible les ofrecemos no sólo a alguien que habla español como los es Maritza, sino también subsidios para poder pagar la inscripción e incluso financiar los campamentos y viajes, también hay muchas oportunidades de ser voluntarios y participar en este movimiento. Y lo dice por su experiencia personal de ser Scout toda su vida y ser hermana de un Águila Scout.” El Consejo de Boy Scouts de la península de Delmarva en la actualidad está trabajando con el centro Comunitario Latinoamericano ofreciendo actividades para después de la escuela a los jóvenes del centro, así como también con La Esperanza en Georgetown y próximamente la Academia Las Américas de Aspira. The Boy Scouts of America is looking for Hispanics to join this program that builds a better future for children.
For a few months now, Maritza González has been working to bring to light the scout project to the Hispanic community, aiming to increase the number of young Hispanics which at present is only of 3% of total membership from the 388 units in Delmarva’s peninsula. For Maritza, this experience started by enrolling her own 6-year-old son, who is now very, very enthusiastic about attending the activities that will help him pave his way, “I now see many opportunities for my son’s education, as here they teach him, among other things, the responsibilities of participating citizenship, to build his character, commitment to service, to respect and to follow orders, etc.” Despite her short experience with the program, she believes this is a great opportunity to build a better future for our children, especially teaching them that it is possible to get wherever you set your mind to through cultivating self-esteem and strong family values. “What motivated me the most,” says González “is that by strengthening the family, it is possible to move forward.” “We would like for Hispanic families to know that our doors are open for them,” says Cindy Olsavsky, Field Director in Wilmington’s scout office, “and to make this happen we offer you, besides somebody that speaks Spanish like Maritza, grants to pay the tuition and finance camps and field trips; there are also many opportunities to become a volunteer worker and participate in this program.” And this comes from her own experience of being a Scout all of her life, and her sister an Eagle Scout. Delmarva’s Boy Scout Council is at present working with the Latin America Community Center offering after school activities to this center’s youth, as well as to La Esperanza in Georgetown and soon to the Las Americas ASPIRA Academy. ‘Un Punto de Vista’ ‘A Matter Of View’

“Equinoccio de otoño”
Ya llegamos a esta época del año y lo que siento es “¿a dónde se fue el tiempo?” Yo no sé ustedes, pero este año se ha pasado tan rápido que cuando uno menos se lo espere, ¡es Navidad de nuevo! El otoño llegará el 23 de este mes y sinceramente le doy la bienvenida al refrescante clima frío. Algunos de ustedes, que ya deben conocerme, saben que ésta es mi estación favorita del año. No veo la hora de mirar los tonos dorados, cobrizos y rojizos que esta estación nos trae. ¿Se han preguntado de dónde viene la palabra equinoccio? o lo que es más, ¿qué es el equinoccio? Bueno, equinoccio es un evento astronómico que ocurre dos veces al año. Es una palabra que viene del latín que significa “noche igual”. Lo que significa que los equinoccios de otoño y de primavera son los únicos días del año en donde las horas del día y de la noche son iguales, esto se debe a que en este momento específico del año el sol cruza el ecuador celestial. Cuando se trata del verano y el invierno se le llama solsticio que en latín significa “sol quieto”. Este también es un evento astronómico que de igual manera sucede dos veces al año y es cuando el sol alcanza su punto más al norte o más al sur en relación con el ecuador celestial. El solsticio de verano es el 21 de junio y el período de tiempo entre el amanecer y el anochecer es el más largo del año. Es entonces cuando vivimos el día más largo del año y la noche más corta. Después, en solsticio de invierno, generalmente el 22 de diciembre, es cuando el período de tiempo entre el amanecer y el anochecer es el más corto del año, y es cuando vivimos el día más corto y la noche más larga, por cierto, no mi favorito. No estoy tratando de enseñar a mis lectores una clase de astronomía, solo una breve y cordial explicación de los cambios climáticos que experimentamos cada cuatro meses. Esta es la época del año en la que debemos mirar hacia adentro y prepararnos para el clima frío que se avecina. Es el momento perfecto para escoger un pasatiempo de interiores o simplemente ponerse al día con la lectura de esos libros que siempre quisimos leer. El año pasado yo leí dos libros y vi películas que hacía tiempo quería ver. También aprendí a tejer y déjenme decirles, fue de lo más gratificante. Verán, en Navidad algunas de mis amigas recibieron un chal hecho a mano que ellas llamaron “el chal K-La”. Para ellas fue un éxito y yo terminé haciendo más de 5 chales. Realmente te da un sentimiento de orgullo cuando ves a tus seres queridos disfrutar de algo que tú hiciste específicamente pensando en ellas. Disfruten del equinoccio de otoño y ¡prepárense para el frío que nos espera!

“Autumnal Equinox”
It is that time of the year and I am left feeling like “where did time go?” I don’t know about you, but this year has gone by so fast that when you least expected, is Christmas again! Autumn will arrive on the 23rd of the month and I truly welcome refreshingly cool weather. Some of you, who know me by now, do know that this is my favorite season of the year. I can’t wait to see the golden, copper and red tones that this season brings to us. Have you asked yourself where does the meaning of the word equinox come from? or for that matter, what is the equinox? Well, equinox is an astronomical event that happens twice each year. This is a word that comes from the Latin words for “equal night.” Which means that fall and spring equinoxes are the only days of the year in which the hours of day and night are equal, this is because at this specific time of the year the sun crosses the celestial equator. Then when it comes to summer and winter it is called Solstice which in Latin words means “sun to stand still.” This is also an astronomical event that as well happens twice a year and it is when the sun reaches its northernmost or southernmost point relative to the celestial equator. Summer solstice is every June 21st and the length of time between sunrise and sunset is the longest of the year. It is then when we experience the longest day of the year and the shortest night. Then on winter solstice, usually December 22nd, it is when the time between sunrise and sunset is the shortest of the year, which is when we experience the shortest day and the longest night, not my favorite. I am not trying to teach my readers an astronomy class, but just a short and sweet understanding of the climatic changes we experience every four months. It is that time when we need to look inward and prepare ourselves for the cold weather ahead of us. It is the perfect time to pick up indoor hobbies or just catch up with reading those books you always wanted to read. Last year I read two books and watch movies that for so long I wanted to watch. I also took up knitting and let me tell you, it was very rewarding to me. You see, for Christmas, some of my girlfriends received a handmade shawl which they call “the K-La shawl.” It was a hit among them and I end up making over 5 shawls. It truly gives you a sense of pride to see your dear ones enjoying something you made specifically with them in mind. Enjoy the autumnal equinox and prepare for the cooler weather ahead!

AMEricAN WOrkErS DESErVE rESPEct By Roger Smith “The middle class would not exist without organized labor.” So proclaimed Vice President Joe Biden at a recent speech in Ohio. He’s right. And with unemployment stuck above 9 percent, the need for strong unions has never been greater. I am the CEO of an international life insurance company. If you think a management perspective automatically means opposition to labor unions, think again. I am humbled to witness the impact of millions of workers’ voices as they proudly affirm, “Workers matter, and we are one!” America’s middle class and workers are under systematic attack. Our failed and reckless economic policies, the Wall Street raid on Main Street, the coddling of millionaires and billionaires, and the gaming of a tax system that favors Big Corporations and offshore tax havens - taken together, all of these amount to a thinly veiled attempt to silence American workers and profit at their expense. It isn’t working. What started in Wisconsin with thousands of union members clad in red, battling to keep the rights they earned through their collective voice, has transformed into a national struggle. The stakes are towering, and there is no place for bystanders. Havens of hope are turning up everywhere. A record number of Wisconsin voters spoke in a recent recall election. Though they fell short of reclaiming a state senate majority in favor of workers’ rights, they won back two seats and reenergized the spirit of American workers, who are now readying themselves for the next round at the ballot box. In Ohio, when the state legislature approved SB 5, a bill that gutted years of hard-won worker rights, over 1 million people joined in petitioning for a state referendum to overturn it. Once again, a sea of red is spilling into the streets. Even if you don’t believe, as I do, that organized labor is the surest path to a solid middle class and that collective bargaining creates the type of shared prosperity we need in this country, you must join the fight for fairness. This is not about union or non-union. It’s about respect for American workers and the value of their labor. The few at the top are grabbing all the gains for themselves, leaving nothing for the workers whose increased productivity has resulted in record corporate profits. CEO pay jumped 27 percent in 2010, while the pay of workers in the private sector grew little over 2 percent. This fundamental unfairness must come to an end. This battle will be fought at the worksite and at every polling place in America. Last month, 45,000 courageous workers went on strike against Verizon, a corporation with over $22.5 billion of profits in the past four and a half years. The strike has since been put on hold while union officials negotiate a new contract with Verizon. Shockingly, Verizon wants to renege on benefits for retirees, eliminate sick days for new hires, abolish disability benefits for workers injured on the job, outsource company jobs, and stick already struggling families with over $20,000 in annual concessions. I hope millions of America’s workers see this fight for what it is - another attempt to devalue labor and silence workers. American corporations must be brought to understand that they can remain competitive, be profitable and do right by their workers. It’s important that we support American workers seeking a fundamental transformation to a fair shake for all: a fair wage while working and protection for rightfully earned benefits like Social Security and Medicare. All people of goodwill should join our protestors clad in red, the unemployed and underemployed, and business leaders who want to do right by our workers. Their voices ask all of us, including CEOs such as myself, to do our part and pay our fair share in rebuilding our great country and our middle class. Rural America’s entrepreneurs can help find the solutions to those challenges, but they need support from Washington, and they deserve it just as much as big business. During recession, large business reluctance to add workers makes small businesses and self-employment even more important. During the 2000-2003 recession, microenterprise employment grew by nine percent nationally, while larger firms were still shedding jobs. The day before the President presented his jobs bill to the nation, Representatives Ron Kind (D-WI) and Wally Herger (R-CA) introduced the Rural Microbusiness Investment Credit Act, which would help entrepreneurs start new businesses and expand existing enterprises by providing a 35 percent tax credit on up to $30,000 of new investment. Owner-operated businesses with up to five employees would be eligible if located in a rural area with significant population loss, low average incomes, high poverty or high unemployment. Beginning farmers and ranchers would also be eligible. Qualifying businesses could receive refunds from prior years if not making enough in the current year to owe taxes, which is critical during tough times or start-up when most are lucky to break even. A refund of prior years’ taxes is an investment incentive that works in good years and bad, for new or established businesses. This tax credit is exactly what rural America needs. It would create jobs and genuine economic opportunity for the little guys that have long been the backbone of the rural economy. VEriZON WirElESS HElPS cONNEct FArAWAY FriENDS & FAMilY DUriNg HiSPANic HEritAgE MONtH Held from September 15 to October 15, National Hispanic Heritage month was established to celebrate and recognize the significant contributions Hispanic Americans have made to our society and culture. President George H.W. Bush made the first proclamation in 1989, and today many of Philadelphia’s nearly 170,000 Hispanic Americans participate in celebrations across the city. Wilmington – Noting that scam artists exploit the sense of familiarity and community that users experience through online social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and eHarmony, Attorney General Beau Biden today warned consumers to be on the lookout for shady investment schemes that are pitched through “friends” on these sites. “Social media websites connect us more closely to family, friends, and acquaintances than ever before, but they’ve also opened a door for con artists to manipulate that sense of community to target unsuspecting victims,” Attorney General Biden said. “Consumers can protect themselves and their families from becoming victims if they are vigilant and ask the right questions before making an investment. I urge anyone who believes they have been targeted by a scam through a social networking site to immediately call our Consumer Protection Hotline at 800-220-5424.” Scams committed through social networking sites are rapidly-spreading modern versions of traditional “affinity fraud,” in which victims are identified through “real world” social networks like professional associations, faith-based communities, and community service groups. Criminals connect with members through common interests, lifestyles or faith to establish trusting bonds, and once a victim feels they can trust the scammer, they are more likely to agree to the scheme. Today, with information such as dates or places of birth, phone numbers, home addresses, employment histories, and photographs readily available on social media sites, scammers are able to commit this type of fraud faster and on a larger scale than they can offline. In a recent case of affinity fraud prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office, Terrel Alexander was convicted of stealing over $100,000 from Delaware investors whose trust he gained by invoking religious and cultural themes in his investment solicitations. Alexander pled guilty and was sentenced to jail earlier this year. La Diáspora Africana en las Américas,
la dimensión caribeña
Un simposio organizado por el programa de estudios latinoamericanos de la Universidad de Delaware el 6 y 7 de octubre.
La sensación de que cuando hablamos sobre el Caribe con un académico norteamericano estamos hablando de dos Caribes diferentes, tal como lo siente la profesora Persephone Braham, directora del programa de estudios Latinoamericanos de la Universidad de Delaware, es compartida por muchas otras personas, nosotros vemos a Cuba, República Dominicana o Venezuela como el “Gran Caribe” explica Braham y al mismo tiempo los angloparlantes piensan en Jamaica y Trinidad y Tobago, y los francés en Martinica, y así podemos seguir enumerando. Braham se ha dedicado al estudio de la literatura hispana del Caribe desde hace muchos años, por ejemplo el papel de la novela negra y la revolución cubana y sobre todo sobre el autor cubano Leonardo Padura y su personaje, el detective Mario Conde. > Gabriel Pilonieta-Blanco When talking about the Caribbean with an American scholar, the feeling that we are talking about two totally different things is shared with many other people, as stated by professor Persephone Braham, Director of the Latin American Studies program at the University of Delaware. “We see Cuba, the Dominican Republic or Venezuela as the ‘Greater Caribbean’” Braham explains, “and at the same time the English-speaking think about Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago, and the Frenchmen in Martinique, and so we can go on.” Braham has dedicated herself to the study of Hispanic literature from the Caribbean for many years now, for instance, the role of the black novel and the Cuban revolution, and mostly the Cuban author Leonardo Padura and his character, detective Mario Conde. This event will analyze in depth the elements that unify or separate the different countries, common cultural heritage from the African continent’s contribution to the Caribbean people, like Arciniegas says, “…the Caribbean suddenly became the point of intersection of all routes… The Caribbean acquired new dimensions, became the Sea of the New World, a place of encounter of multiple cultures of different continents, making of this a ‘real and marvelous’ place.” “To cross linguistic borders, to analyze the cultural production continuity of an Afro-American artist from New York, Havana or the American continent, gathering a group of artists, musicians and humanists to analyze the convergence and divergence within this cultural production and history” says Braham, “is the fundamental motivation of this encounter. The important thing is to create spaces for those who have deeply thought about the African contribution to the Caribbean” explains the professor, “to remember the forgotten or excluded from the black culture in the Americas.” The program includes specialists’ conferences from different universities, films, exhibitions from Caribbean artists and Caribbean music and its contribution to universal culture. The event is free and open to the general public and will take place in Perkins Student Center of the University of Delaware on October 6 and 7. Después de una reñida competencia, la Srta. Amanda Glynn resultó ganadora del título de Miss Hispanidad, como primera finalista fue elegida Ja’Lexis Núñez, como segunda finalista la joven Leandra Abreu y como tercera finalista tuvo la suerte de ser Glanelys Ortiz. La nueva reina hispana de Delaware Amanda Ivette Glynn tiene 16 años y cursa el penúltimo año con una especialización en danza en Cab Calloway School of Arts. Ella baila desde que tiene cuatro años. Su primera escuela de baile fue Diamond State Dancers and Cheerleaders, donde estudió por ocho años, y luego estudió cuatro años más en la escuela Precision Dance Studio. Amanda ha participado en los espectáculos Young Choreographer Showcase, Show Stoppers y el High School Spring Show. The election of Miss Hispanidad took place last Saturday, September 17th at the Grand Opera House in Wilmington.
After having the event suspended due to hurricane Irene, which touched Delaware just the day the event was first scheduled, the eleven participants of the Miss Delaware 2011 came together at the Grand Opera House to bring to life this celebration of beauty and talent of Hispanic women of Delaware. After a hard-fought competition, Miss Amanda Glynn was elected Miss Hispanidad, first runner up was Ja’Lexis Núñez, the second finalist was Leandra Abreu and third place was for Glanelys Ortiz. Delaware’s new Hispanic queen Amanda Ivette Glynn is a 16-year-old junior majoring in dance at Cab Calloway School of Arts. She has been dancing since the age of four. Her first dance studio was Diamond State Dancers and Cheerleaders, where she attended for eight years; then she attended Precision Dance Studio for four years. Amanda has been in the Young Choreographer Showcase, Show Stoppers and the High School Spring Show. She joined the Cheerleading team for Wilmington Charter School and also the Top Flight where she joined the Hip Hop team who were the 2011 State Champions. Amanda would like to continue dancing through college and pursue her dream of becoming a dance choreographer and a dance instructor. One of her dreams is to be on Broadway and have a contract with a dance company. On the night of the event she presented a dance where she combined different styles with great success. She likes to spend her free time with friends and family. She is a fun and outgoing person who loves to meet new people. Her platform for this pageant is Child Abuse.

Receta Guatemalteca Ingredientes: 2 cucharadas de aceite para freír 1 libra de manita de rochoy cortado en 5 rodajas delgadas 5 rodajas de jamón (popular) 5 rodajas de tocino ahumado 3 papas en trozo alargado 1/2 taza de perejil picado Salsa: 1 cebolla 1 chile pimiento Sal y pimienta al gusto Preparación: Sazonar los bistec, poner la rodaja de jamón, el tocino, perejil, el pedazo de papa cruda y enrollar. Sostener con un palillo y luego freírlas a fuego bajo. Aparte cocinar tomate, chile pimiento, cebolla y ajo. Licuar y sazonar, dejar que hierva y cocinar los enrollados en la salsa. Servirlos calientes.

On each slice of beef, place a slice of ham, a slice of bacon, parsley, raw potato pieces and roll up. Insert one or two toothpicks to hold together. Fry the rolls over low-heat. To make the sauce, cook the tomatos, pimiento chile, onion and garlic. Liquefy in a blender and add seasoning. Bring sauce to a simmer and cook the meat rolls in the sauce. Serve hot.

Protect yorself and loved ones with a Flu Shot
Vaccination is the best strategy to protect people against the spread of the influenza. Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu shot, to protect themselves and their loved ones. To help make that happen, the Division of Public Health (DPH) announces its 2011-2012 flu clinic schedule, running statewide from Oct. 11 to Dec. 1. “Today’s flu shots are very safe,” said Dr. Karyl Rattay, DPH director. “It’s especially important that anyone with a chronic health condition or who cares for or lives with someone with a chronic condition get immunized.” DPH flu shot clinics are intended for Delawareans age 9 and older who do not have a health care provider or whose insurance does not cover flu shots. The vaccine is the same as last year and the nasal spray vaccination is available in addition to the typical shot. DPH has received nearly 30,000 doses of vaccines and distributed approximately 20,000 so far. Health care providers, pharmacies and grocery stores are also offering flu vaccinations statewide. Individuals without primary care providers and/or without insurance, who cannot afford a flu shot, may be immunized at DPH clinics listed by county below. Wilmington Mayor James M. Baker and the City of Wilmington’s Office of Economic Development (Office of Small and Minority Business Enterprises) are pleased to announce the schedule of events for the 2011 Mega BizFest—an annual business conference that invites policy-makers, corporations, governments, business leaders and small businesses to gather and explore strategies for improving prospects for women-, veteran-, and minority-owned businesses. Held October 6, the event is co-sponsored by a consortium of organizations dedicated to assisting small business owners. “The success of small businesses is key to weathering today’s challenging economic climate,” said Wilmington Mayor James M. Baker. “Mega BizFest is our way of helping all business owners be a part of the new Wilmington that is emerging from the old—where growth and prosperity is available to all and everyone is given the opportunity and direction to succeed.” Mega BizFest will be held on October 6th from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel – The Belle, which is located at 1612 N. DuPont Highway, New Castle Delaware. The Conference will focus on three needs as identified by surveys from small business owners: access to capital; access to the supply chain; and access to technology. This year’s event also features, for the first time, the Lender’s Match, where small businesses can meet one on one with representatives from government, the private sector, corporations and the banking industry to discuss purchasing and procurement opportunities. Finally, the conference includes the chance for business owners to meet with business coaches and compete in the Elevator Pitch contest. The 2011 Conference has partnered with Constant Contact, a powerhouse organization providing an integrated solution for marketing and building relationships using online technology. “Technology has created a new forum for communicating with customers,” said David Yunghans, Regional Development Director, Constant Contact. “Businesses are in need of optimizing their social networks and gaining tools that help with building and increasing customer relationships.” On October 6, organizers will announce the winners of the 7th Annual Mega BizFest Business Plan Competition, in which aspiring and existing entrepreneurs competed for up to $10,000 in prize money and business support services for their small businesses. Additional awards will be presented to the Outstanding DBE of the Year, the Outstanding Corporation of the Year, the Prime Contractor of the Year and the U.S. Small Business Administration MEDWEEK Awards Winner. The evening will culminate to a B2B Networking reception where business relationships can continue to develop with smooth R & B sounds of “TO THE MAX” band. Mega BizFest provides for a onestop business event for ALL businesses and entrepreneurial minded persons seeking working capital, business support services and strategies and solutions to increase the effectiveness of marketing and promoting a business. ¿Está listo para controlar su Ira?
Empiece leyendo estos 7 consejos para calmar sus humos
¿Cómo reacciona cuando alguien le corta el paso con el carro en el tráfico? ¿Sube su presión arterial por los cielos cuando su hijo se rehúsa a cooperar? Muchos de mis clientes de sicoterapia y consejería se quejan de no poder controlar su ira. La ira es una emoción normal pero es importante aprender a trarar con ella de una forma positiva. Cuando la ira no es controlada, puede dañar a uno mismo y a las relaciones que tenemos con los demás. ¿Ha perdido la calma últimamente? ¿Le ha sido difícil controlar la ira? En este artículo encontrará siete maneras de controlar su temperamento. Las sugerencias provienen de fuentes científicas muy confiables como la famosa Mayo Clinic. No. 1: Haga una Pausa Contar hasta 10 no es solo para los niños. Antes de reaccionar a una situación tensa, tómese unos minutos para respirar profundamente y contar hasta 10. Frenarse un poco puede ayudar a calmar el temperamento. Si es necesario, aléjese de la persona o la situación hasta que su frustración se aminore. También puede practicar técnicas de relajación como imaginarse una escena relajante, o repetir una frase que le de calma como “todo pasará.” También puede escuchar música, escribir un diario o hacer algunas posiciones de yoga para recuperar el balance de sus emociones. Explique sus preocupaciones y necesidades directamente, sin herir a otros ni tratar de controlarlos. Use el humor para relajar la situación. No use el sarcasmo, porque puede herir sentimientos y hacer las cosas peor. No. 3: Haga un poco de ejercicio La actividad física puede proveer de una puerta de salida para sus emociones, especialmente si está a punto de explotar. Si siente que su ira está creciendo, vaya a caminar o correr un rato, o pase un tiempo hacienda su actividad física favorita. La actividad física estimula varios químicos del cerebro y puede dejarle sintiéndose más feliz y más relajado. No. 4: Piense antes de hablar En el calor del momento, es fácil decir algo de lo cual puede arrepentirse después. Por ejemplo, diga, “Yo estoy molesto porque te paraste de la mesa sin ofrecer ayuda con los platos,” en vez de, “tú nunca me ayudas en la casa.” No. 7: No se quede con el resentimiento. El perdón es una herramienta muy útil. Si permite que la ira u otros sentimientos negativos le quiten espacio a los sentimientos positivos, usted puede acabar tragado por su propia amargura. Pero si puede perdonar a alguien que le molestó, ambos pueden aprender de la situación. Es irrealista esperar que todos se comporten exactamente de la manera en que usted quiere todo el tiempo. Ready to get your anger under control?
Start by considering these 7 anger management tips
Do you find yourself fuming when someone cuts you off in traffic? Does your blood pressure go through the roof when your child refuses to cooperate? Many of my psychotherapy and counseling clients are concerned about controlling their anger. Anger is a normal and even healthy emotion — but it’s important to deal with it in a positive way. Uncontrolled anger can take a toll on both your health and your relationships. Have you lost control lately? Has it been difficult for you to control your anger? In this article you will find seven ways to control your temperament. The suggestions come from reliable sources such as the famous Mayo Clinic. No. 1: Take a timeout Counting to 10 isn’t just for kids. Before reacting to a tense situation, take a few moments to breathe deeply and count to 10. Slowing down can help defuse your temper. If necessary, take a break from the person or situation until your frustration subsides a bit. You can also practice relaxation skills: imagine a relaxing scene, or repeat a calming word or phrase, such as, “This, too, will pass.” You might also listen to music, write in a journal or do a few yoga poses — whatever it takes to encourage relaxation. (Attend our workshops to learn relaxation techniques: Call 302-576-4126). No. 2: Once you’re calm, express your anger As soon as you’re thinking clearly, express your frustration in an assertive but non-confrontational way. State your concerns and needs clearly and directly, without hurting others or trying to control them. Use humor to release tension. Don’t use sarcasm, though — it can hurt feelings and make things worse. No. 3: Get some exercise Physical activity can provide an outlet for your emotions, especially if you’re about to erupt. If you feel your anger escalating, go for a brisk walk or run, or spend some time doing other favorite physical activities. Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that can leave you feeling happier and more relaxed than you were before you worked out. No. 4: Think before you speak In the heat of the moment, it’s easy to say something you’ll later regret. Take a few moments to collect your thoughts before saying anything — and allow others involved in the situation to do the same. No. 5: Identify possible solutions Instead of focusing on what made you mad, work on resolving the issue at hand. Does your child’s messy room drive you crazy? Close the door. Remind yourself that anger won’t fix anything, and might only make it worse. No. 6: Stick with ‘I’ statements To avoid criticizing or placing blame — which might only increase tension — use “I” statements to describe the problem. Be respectful and specific. For example, say, “I’m upset that you left the table without offering to help with the dishes,” instead of, “You never do any housework.” No. 7: Don’t hold a grudge Forgiveness is a powerful tool. If you allow anger and other negative feelings to crowd out positive feelings, you might find yourself swallowed up by your own bitterness or sense of injustice. But if you can forgive someone who angered you, you might both learn from the situation. It’s unrealistic to expect everyone to behave exactly as you want at all times. I hope you use these tips. WorkiNg iN WooD Hagley Craft Fair Spotlights Artists Working in Wood 18TH-ceNTurY-STYle BarBecue at Dover, Del.’s John Dickinson Plantation. A barbecue cook-out—18thcentury-style—will take place on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the John Dickinson Plantation located at 340 Kitts Hummock Rd. in Dover, DE 19901. The day-long outdoor party will feature barbecue-cooking demonstrations by Past Masters in Early American Domestic Arts. Additional activities will include wagon rides, paper quilling, story readings, outdoor games, music and silhouettes. Admission to the event is free and open to the public. BriNg Your kiDS To SPark iN THe Park This program offers nature exploration, sports, arts and crafts, board games and free play to kids ages 5 to 12 led by experienced recreation leaders.
