For the poor versed on the electoral campaigns’ financing regulatory norms, it’s shocking to see the amount of money being spent in the primary elections of the Republican Party and the fact that Obama’s campaign headquarters assure they expect to raise one BILLION dollars to finance their chance to re-election. To take an obvious example, The New York Times of Wednesday the 15th published an article about the donations that a millionaire from Texas, Mr. Harold C. Simmons, has made not to one, but two of the Republican candidates, Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich, for $14 million so far for the electoral campaign. And if you add what other businessmen have donated, just a few of them, it sums up to 50 million contributed by a very exclusive circle of conservatives. I don’t know exactly how much has been spent in trying to discredit one another, but surely is money that could very well be invested in something far more interesting, like for instance, education or job creation, but anyway, the show must go on. No wonder somebody wrote in a blog that the real American Dream is to become a candidate to be able to have money in abundance without worrying too much about earning it. So is it legal to “buy the elections”? Because I understand there are regulatory norms to individuals supporting a particular candidate, and not for the rich to set the rhythm of the electoral debate with their bulging donations. The phenomenon is the so-called “Super PACs”, which are political action committees that according to the law approved in 2010; have no limits collecting donations to be then sent to the candidate, with which the mandatory limit of $2,500 per donor is exceeded. These committees are also in charge of some other tasks such as collecting votes over the phone. Obama criticized these platforms in 2010 saying they were a “threat to our democracy”. But after realizing the strength that they have acquired in the Republican primaries, he has had no choice but to enter the game and order his team to tune up the machinery to collect more money. The law prohibits Super PACs from coordinating actions with the candidates’ campaign headquarters. They are two parallel worlds headed in the same direction. In theory, they are independent among them; however the Federal Election Commission has published a list revealing the names of these support platforms’ donors. Not everything is music in Paradise and soon we will see why this is so. The money collected by Republicans this past month of January is four times the amount raised by the Democrats, which according to The New York Times, highlights the determination of Republicans to evict Obama from the White House. The Federal Election Commission supervises all of these donations and establishes the maximum amount a citizen can individually contribute to the National Committees of the Democratic or Republican Parties or to the local political parties. But since 2010, the PACs have no collection limit provided they act in an independent manner, without direct coordination with a candidate’s campaign headquarters or giving the money directly to the candidate. Afterwards, they can use the contributions to favor the campaign of one of the candidates or to attack his opponents. Furthermore, all the PACs must disclose where the money comes from as well as the amount accumulated, so the voters know the support a candidate has by means of the amount accumulated in his favor. The lack of collection limits for these independent committees has made them multiply their range of action and influence in comparison with the electoral campaign of four years ago. According to a report of the Election Commission, the donations of citizens, PAC, NGO, unions and independent groups have multiplied by four between the 2008 elections and the 2010 legislative elections, when the Democratic Party lost control of the House of Representatives. Seeing all this, we remain perplex noticing that the power of Mr. Money is who decides and not the power of the vote of the conscious citizen, although as my friend Carlos says, that is water under the bridge.

Stewards of Children program trains adults to recognize and report the signs of child abuse; Program aims to train 35,000 Delawareans

The Fight to Protect Children

“It is not a child’s job to protect him or herself from abuse, it’s our job as adults,” Attorney General Biden said, noting that one in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before the age of 18, yet only one in ten abused kids reaches out for help. “This program gives adults the tools and the information we need to protect kids, who in 9 out of 10 cases are victimized by someone they know. Everyone in Delaware is a mandatory reporter – we are all obligated to intervene when we see a child in danger, but we don’t always know what to look for. When only one in ten abused children reaches out for help, we know that it falls to the adults to see the signs and make the call.” Last September, Attorney General Biden, the YMCA of Delaware, and Prevent Child Abuse Delaware announced a collaborative partnership to train 35,000 Delawareans, or about 5% of the state’s population in the Stewards of Children program in five years. The Stewards of Children program is designed to teach adults the signs of child sex abuse to prevent it and report suspected incidents. “This is an important opportunity for the higher education community to be proactive in our defense of children,” said University of Delaware President Patrick T. Harker. “In the first phase of this program, we will train nearly 1,100 individuals affiliated with the University of Delaware, and we plan to take this training throughout Delaware to ensure that everyone associated with UD acts immediately and responsibly on behalf of the children in our care.” The program highlights facts about abuse, common situations in which it occurs, ways to talk to children and adults about it, and simple and effective protection strategies. Taught by trained facilitators to the general public, the program is brief, inexpensive, and effective. Participants report a 38% increase in knowledge and attitudes about child sex abuse. “Delaware State University has on its faculty one of our State’s first trainers to be certified for the Stewards of Children program, and she has already partnered with community stakeholders in Kent County to facilitate training with all those groups,” said President Harry L. Williams. “We will also implement a schedule that involves the training of all 900-plus employees on the DSU campus.” Dr. Orlando J. George, Jr., President of Delaware Tech, said, “It is critical that Delaware Tech employees and our future graduates have access to every tool and educational resource possible to ensure that young people in Delaware are protected and that they have a voice. The Stewards of Children program will enable us to build on what we already do to protect children on campus and raise the bar when it comes to increasing awareness of child abuse. It is a natural fit for the College to serve as an active partner in this program, and more important, it is the responsible thing to do.” “Wilmington University’s commitment to the prevention of child maltreatment is evidenced by our pioneering effort to offer a Child Advocacy Studies certificate,” said Dr. Jim Wilson, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Wilmington University. “The Stewards of Children program is another tool in our toolbox to educate the Wilmington University community to recognize and report suspected child abuse.” All reports of child abuse and neglect in the State of Delaware should be made to the 24 hour Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline at 1-800-292-9582. Individuals and organizations can learn more about the Stewards of Children program and schedule a training session by calling Prevent Child Abuse Delaware at 302-425-7490 or visiting www.pcadelaware.org.

Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden and leaders from four of Delaware’s largest institutions of higher education announced a significant expansion of a statewide program to train adults to recognize and respond to the signs of child sexual abuse. The presidents of the University of Delaware, Delaware State University, Delaware Technical Community College, and the Vice President for Academic Affairs of Wilmington University announced from the University of Delaware that they will bring the Stewards of Children training to their campuses to educate faculty, staff and students.

Supporting Kidds awarded $25,000 grant for Spanish-language outreach and services
Supporting Kidds, The Center for Grieving Children and Their Families, is one of the first organizations in the country to address the unique needs of bereaved children. It is located in Hockessin, Delaware and has been helping grieving children and their families since 1989. The mission of Supporting Kidds is to provide a compassionate pathway to healing for grieving children and their families, and to empower the community to support them in the grieving process. The New York Life Foundation, in collaboration with The National Alliance for Grieving Children (NAGC), has awarded $25,000 to Supporting Kidds to expand their grief support services to Spanish speaking families. “Bereavement experts agree that reaching underserved communities is a critical need to be addressed,” said Andy McNiel, president of NAGC’s board. “Now, through the generosity of the New York Life Foundation, we can strategically support and target this area.” “The New York Life Foundation has been focused on the issue of childhood bereavement for several years,” said Chris Park, president, New York Life Foundation. “We are pleased to expand our support by partnering with the NAGC to help provide bereavement services to more kids across the country.” Supporting Kidds offers bereavement support groups, therapy, and consultations. They also provide written resources about ways to cope with grief and how to best support grieving children. Until now, all of their materials have been only offered in English. With the implementation of this grant, all of their materials will be translated into Spanish. Right now, Dr. Traynor is the only bi-lingual staff member. This grant will enable her to be joined by a number of bilingual therapists and volunteers. They plan to reach out to members of the Spanish speaking communities wherever they are located. They will explain about the range of services offered by Supporting Kidds, offer programs about grief, and make presentations directly to families. You can help. Supporting Kidds is accepting applications for bi-lingual licensed mental health professionals to provide therapy services and bi-lingual volunteers to facilitate their support groups. Supporting Kidds expects bi-lingual services to be available by this summer. All are invited to the Crazy Catwalk for Kidds, a high energy hair and fashion show, created by J Christian Studio and benefiting Support Kidds. It will be Sunday March 4, 1-5pm at the Hockessin Memorial Hall, 1225 Old Lancaster Pike, Hockessin DE 19707. Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for children under 11. ‘Un Punto de Vista’ ‘A Matter Of View’

| Keyla I. Rivero-Rodriguez

The Greatest Love Of All
By now many of us are truly past the shock of learning about Whitney Houston’s death. As sad as this news was for many of us, this news has also oversaturated the whole media industry. To the point that I can’t help to feel fed up of it! Please don’t get me wrong, I feel her loss, and I even posted my favorite song of hers on my Facebook page as soon as I learned from her passing. But people can we just move on? Last Saturday, I spent all weekend long sick in bed with the flu and out of curiosity; I watched the televised funeral services or as Baptist faith would referred to as “home going” services for Ms. Houston. As many of you know by now, Whitney was a native of New Jersey and she grew up in Elizabeth. It is no surprise that her funeral services were held at The New Hope Baptist Church, which is the same church where as a youngster, Whitney sang in their choir and her mother, Cissy, for many years acted as its choir director. Come to think of it, in many aspects, this was the right and fitting place for her to have her “home going” services. I am trying to wrap my thoughts on this terrible epidemic that prescription drugs addiction is having in our society. It truly seems more shocking when we learn of its effects at the time when a famous and talented personality dies from it. To a point, I am guessing that this is because we tend to glorify a specific celebrity into thinking that they have it all, from fame, money and beauty. Look back at Marilyn Monroe, Heath Ledger, Anna Nicole Smith, Michael Jackson and now Whitney Houston. I understand that Whitney’s toxicology reports from her autopsy have not been released, but it is believed that it was the mixing of alcohol and prescription drugs that provided the unfortunate combination that leaded to her premature death. I love to hear how people are blaming her ex-husband Bobby Brown for her drug addictions. Apparently, in their fourteen years of marriage, she did get involved with drugs and alcohol, to a point where she attended rehab. If she was battling all of these demons, it was out of her free will and free choice that she got involved with drugs and alcohol to begin with. When are we going to take ownership and responsibility of our own doings? We need to stop blaming our mishaps and whatever things happen or for that matter do not happen in our lives, in order to justify our toxic and selfdestructive behavior. My all-time favorite Whitney Houston song is “The Greatest Love of all,” ironic that the words to the song that made her famous did not carry her through life. “The greatest love of all is easy to achieve learning to love yourself it is the greatest love of all…” Whitney, may your spirit find light and peace.

hEALTh iNsUrANcE One of the most painful lessons we are learning in this economic downturn is how tenuous the connection is to our health insurance. For the thousands of Delawareans who have lost their jobs, deciding what they also will do about their lost health insurance is a crucial first step forward. If your former employer had 20 or more employees, you were offered a continuation of your health insurance for at least 18 months under COBRA, the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. The plan offers similar health insurance and the same benefits that you had while employed, but you must pay the premium you paid previously, plus the portion that your employer previously paid on your behalf and possibly a small administrative fee. During the height of the recession, the federal government offered a federal subsidy providing for a 65 percent reduction in the cost of COBRA. When that subsidy ended last year on Aug. 31, so did the possibility that many who had lost their jobs could afford the continued health insurance coverage. Without the subsidy, the Kaiser Family Foundation found that the national average cost of maintaining COBRA in 2010 was $1,137 per month for families and $410 for individuals. The full cost of COBRA is too steep for many families or individuals, especially after losing at least one income and having to rely on unemployment compensation while they seek a new job. The Commonwealth Fund reports that 72 percent of people who lost their health insurance in the past two years when they lost their jobs did not get the health care or the prescriptions they needed because of the cost. When people lose their job and find themselves in such an unfamiliar position, one of the toughest things for them to do is to ask for help. Today, for the 31,900 Delawareans who are out of work and for the thousands more whose new positions don’t offer health insurance, options are available. They include: 211 telephone assistance: Think of this as Delaware’s information desk to get you started. One call and you will be directed to the appropriate programs and benefits for your situation. Community Healthcare Access Program (CHAP): It provides access to primary care doctors, specialists and other health care resources including prescription programs, lab and radiology services for Delawareans who are uninsured and ineligible for medical assistance programs and who meet eligibility guidelines. Screening for Life: For Delaware adults who meet age, income and insurance guidelines, the program pays for cancer screening tests, including pap tests, breast exams, mammograms, prostate tests and colorectal tests. Delaware Healthy Children Program (CHIP): This low-cost health insurance program is for Delaware’s uninsured children with family income at or under 200 percent of the federal poverty level. The monthly premium is $10-$25 depending on family income and covers all children in the home. Medicaid: This federal/state medical assistance program is available to low-income families and to eligible aged, blind or disabled individuals whose income is insufficient to meet the cost of necessary medical services. Dental program: The Division of Public Health provides dental care to Medicaid-eligible individuals under age 21 at five clinics statewide. Women, Infants & Children (WIC): For pregnant, breastfeeding or postpartum women and children or infants younger than 5, this program provides nutritious foods, information on healthy eating, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health care and social services. State pools: If you exhausted 18 months of COBRA coverage, you are eligible to obtain coverage through state high-risk insurance pools and also qualify for special enrollment in a spouse’s plan. Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan: If you have been without health coverage for at least six months, and have a pre-existing condition or have been denied coverage due to a health condition, you may be eligible for affordable coverage under the Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan. Open market: If you and your family are relatively healthy, you may be able to buy health insurance on your own at a cost that is similar to the formerly subsidized COBRA coverage. Negotiate: If you don’t have insurance, be candid with your doctor or the hospital’s billing department to see if you can negotiate a discount by paying up front or create a payment plan. Rita Landgraf is secretary of Delaware’s Department of Health and Social Services. NATiONAL ENTrEPrENEUrshiP WEEk is UPON Us This week, the week of February 18-25, is National Entrepreneurship Week. It was so named in recognition of the contributions of entrepreneurs and to celebrate and nurture the entrepreneurial spirit. Entrepreneurs create many jobs and economic opportunities in America, especially in our rural communities. They take the biggest risks to capture opportunity where others fear to tread. Revitalizing rural America requires us to encourage entrepreneurship, stimulate innovative community development, and open up new opportunities for farming and ranching enterprises. One program that thousands of small business owners across the country have benefited from is the Rural Microentrepreneur Assistance Program, which provides loan capital and training grants to organizations, like the Center for Rural Affairs, who work with small business owners in rural areas. Perhaps a business in your community has been helped by this program. Unfortunately, Congress cut this crucial investment in November, citing the need to decrease spending. However, programs like the Rural Microentrepreneur Assistance Program generate new economic activity for businesses that otherwise may not be able to get started or grow. We need investment in our rural communities, and we need to fight for rural development programs within our government. In the coming year, the Center for Rural Affairs will be fighting for both to be adequately represented in the Farm Bill. We’ll let you know about ways to take action and opportunities for your voice to be heard. By Elisha Smith, [email protected], Center for Rural Affairs

Voter ID Laws Target the Most Vulnerable
Policies that make voting more difficult harm democracy
>Vanessa Cardenas / published by the Center for American Progress.
2011 was a historic year for people across the world wanting more access to a democratic and open political process. Movements such as the Arab Spring inspired people to take action and have a say in their political future, and the Occupy Wall Street movement is a manifestation of that desire here in the United States. Yet instead of making it easier for U.S. citizens to participate in our democratic process, there are strong and misguided efforts to make it more difficult. According to the nonpartisan Brennan Center for Justice, more than 5 million voters could be affected by these laws and, as we explain below, they are an expensive way to fix a problem that doesn’t exist. Proponents of voter restrictions measures argue that “voter fraud” is rampant. But the facts do not bear this out. For instance, a five-year investigation by the Justice Department under President George W. Bush found just 86 instances of improper voting from 2002 to 2005. A Brennan Center report released in 2007, “The Truth About Fraud,” found that allegations of voting fraud are often wholly inaccurate or heavily exaggerated. According to the report’s authors, voter impersonation—the type of voter fraud targeted by current voter ID legislation—is “more rare than death by lightning.” The fact is that most states already require voters to show ID at the polls. The Help America Vote Act of 2002 established federal voter ID requirements and requires ID at the polls from all first-time voters who register by mail who fail to provide an ID at the time of registration. There are also harsh penalties for those who, for example, try to impersonate a voter or for those who erroneously fill out voter registration cards. Additional voter ID verification laws are expensive, difficult to carry out and bad for states’ bottom lines. There are also many legal requirements to implement photo ID legislation. For one, voters cannot be made to spend any money in order to exercise their right to vote or else the proposal could be unconstitutional. Photo ID proposals therefore must cover costs of providing ID. Indiana, which has the strictest photo ID law in the nation, spent more than $10 million to provide IDs to voters who needed one. These laws disproportionately affect certain groups. Yet as bad as the fiscal (and legal) repercussions are, what’s most at stake is the impact on people’s right to vote and their ability to participate fully in our democracy. And as is often the case, those who have the most to lose are the ones bearing the brunt of these legislative efforts: the elderly, low-income workers, and people of color, since they often lack forms of identification and/or sometimes do not have the means to get the necessary documentation to get their photo IDs. In 2008, Florida alone registered at least 176,000 voters through voter registration drives, yet the state passed a law in 2011 that closed or eliminated most drives as well as imposing new restrictions and potential fines on groups that conduct voter registration drives. Even the League of Women Voters took note of the misguided law and announced that after 72 years they would no longer be running their regular voter registration drive in that state. Early voting periods also are very important for those who cannot afford to take time off work to vote. They allow people to vote prior to Election Day to avoid missed work days. But nine states have introduced legislation to end early voting periods and at least four have made efforts to reduce absentee voting opportunities, a key voting tool used by young adults away at college hoping to vote in their home state. Additionally, Florida and Iowa passed legislation to disenfranchise citizens with previous felony convictions, making it extremely difficult to restore their voting rights upon release. This would particularly impact African American men who are more than five times more likely to be incarcerated. These laws harm our democracy. Every election year, we are reminded that “every vote matters” and that our greatest right (and responsibility) as citizens of our democracy is to participate in our political process. Others across the world are fighting for that right. Our elected officials’ efforts, then, should be focused on spending more energy creating opportunities for more participation and not on creating additional barriers.

Everything About Vaccines
Vaccines are for people of all ages, not just children and seniors
/PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ -- Keeping up with vaccines is not always easy, particularly if you live in a household with family members of different ages. Vaccination needs can also change quickly if there’s an outburst of a disease. These days, however, figuring out who needs to get vaccinated, when and where is as easy as visiting Vaccines, the federal government’s centralized portal for everything related to vaccines. The portal recently launched a Spanish-language version of the site “Vaccinations protect you but also protect family members and the community, and this website will help everybody get answers to some of the most basic questions about vaccines,” said Guillermo Aviles-Mendoza, a Public Health Advisor to the National Vaccine Program Office at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Useful Information about Vaccines The site offers information about vaccines from a practical and useful perspective. You’ll find, for example, vaccination calendars, explanations on how vaccines work and resources on which vaccines you need to take before going abroad. In addition, you can: * * * Read about the safety and effectiveness of vaccines. Learn which diseases are preventable through vaccines. Become familiar with the many acronyms and abbreviations surrounding vaccinations. “It’s a place where you can find practical and useful tools,” said Guillermo Aviles-Mendoza.

Who Needs to Get Vaccinated and When It’s a myth that vaccinations are only for children, pregnant women and senior citizens. In fact, every year thousands of adults get vaccinated against flu. There are different factors that determine if you need to get vaccinated, including your age, lifestyle, medical conditions and the places you visit. You might also want to get vaccinated if there’s an outburst of a particular disease, like whooping cough. Dozens of people died during an outbreak in 2010, most of them children under the age of one who couldn’t get vaccinated because they were too young. That’s why the federal government recommends that 11 or 12 year-olds get a booster of whooping cough vaccine, and that all adults get vaccinated against the whooping cough and get a booster every 10 years. “The vaccine protects the person who took it, but also those who can’t get vaccinated, such as small children and people with weak immune systems,” said Aviles-Mendoza. Where to Get Vaccinated Vaccinations are available in many places, from your doctor’s office and hospitals to pharmacies, churches and even schools and colleges. And many insurance companies cover the cost of vaccines. But what if you don’t have insurance? You can always get vaccinated at the many community clinics funded by the federal government across the country. These clinics offer low cost vaccinations, so you pay what you are able to afford. Vaccinations.gov has a community clinic locator. Just type in your ZIP code. “These clinics are great because they also offer other types of services such as prenatal care, dental and mental health services,” said Aviles-Mendoza.

Doodle 4 Google

a national competition open to students in grades K-12, by encouraging Delaware kids to enter and by exhibiting the State Finalists’ doodles in an exhibition this summer.
The annual competition, like so many of the DCM’s programs and exhibits, encourages and celebrates the creativity of young people. Submissions will be judged in five grade groups—K-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9, and 10-12—and official entry forms can be obtained at the DCM or online at http:// www.google.com/doodle4google. The winning doodle will be featured on google.com, and the winning doodler will receive a $30,000 college scholarship, a $50,000 technology grant for his or her school, and other prizes. “It’s such a fun contest,” says Julie W. Van Blarcom, DCM’s executive director and CEO. “The playful processes of imagining, designing, and expressing reflect so much of what the Delaware Children’s Museum is all about. We hope as many students as possible will take part in the experience of making their own doodle.”

Doodle 4 Google is one of several efforts by Google to encourage and celebrate the creativity of young people by asking students to create their own Google doodle. The theme this year is “If I could travel in time, I’d visit . . . .” Doodle 4 Google gives students a blank canvas to harness their curiosity and imagine the past, present, and/or future anywhere in the world. After all the doodles have been submitted to Google by March 23rd, a team of Googlers and then guest judges—such as Katy Perry, Phineas and Ferb creator and executive producer Jeff “Swampy” Marsh, and recording artist Jordin Sparks—will help choose the top doodles. Then on May 2nd, Google will give the final vote to you, and one winner from each grade group will be chosen by a public vote. First prize will be awarded to the winning doodler on May 17th, and their doodle will be showcased on google.com on May 18th. Sex offender trial ends in hung jury
Cecilio Cruz Garcia faces new trial
Accused sex offender Cecilio Cruz Garcia will face a retrial on charges he sexually assaulted a young boy after his first trial ended in a hung jury. The Attorney General’s Office plans to retry the case of an accused Rehoboth Beach sex offender after his first trial ended in a hung jury. Cecilio Cruz Garcia, 60, was charged in May with sexually abusing a young boy at an unlicensed daycare on Rehoboth Avenue. But the jury in Garcia’s three-day trial in the court of Sussex County Superior Court Judge E. Scott Bradley could not reach a unanimous verdict; the trial ended with a hung jury. Garcia, a legal immigrant from El Salvador, was facing 152 years to life in prison if convicted. Garcia faced four counts of first-degree unlawful sexual contact; two counts of second-degree sexual abuse by a person in a position of trust, authority, or supervision; one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child; one count of first-degree indecent exposure; and one count of endangering the welfare of a child. Department of Justice spokesman Jason Miller said Garcia pleaded guilty in a separate trial to charges of failing to re-register as a sex offender. Garcia has a previous 1993 conviction for unlawful sexual contact with a child under 12. He was arrested by Rehoboth Beach Police Department when he failed to re-register three days after changing his employment status. Garcia could face up to two years in prison for failure to re-register. Miller said the court did not permit the jury to know about Garcia’s past history as a sex offender during his child sex-abuse trial. The unlicensed daycare was located at a Rehoboth Avenue apartment where Garcia was living with companion Marta Venegas. Rehoboth police have since shut down the daycare.

Women and Socil Security
March is Women’s History Month — a time to focus not just on the past, but on the challenges women continue to face in the 21st century. > Beth Blank Social Security Manager in Georgetown, DE Social Security plays a vital role in the lives of women. With longer life expectancies than men, women tend to live more years in retirement and have a greater chance of exhausting other sources of income. With the national average life expectancy for women in the United States rising, many women will have decades to enjoy retirement. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a girl born today can expect to live more than 80 years. As a result, experts generally agree that if women want to ensure that their retirement years are comfortable, they need to plan early and wisely. What you can do The best place to begin is by knowing what you can expect to receive from Social Security, and how much more you are likely to need. You can start with a visit to Social Security’s Retirement Estimator. There, in just a few minutes, you can get a personalized, instant estimate of your retirement benefits. You can find it at www.socialsecurity.gov/estimator. You should also visit Social Security’s financial planning website at www.socialsecurity.gov/planners. It provides detailed information about how marriage, widowhood, divorce, self-employment, government service, and other life or career events can affect your Social Security. If you want more information about the role of Social Security in women’s lives today, Social Security also has a booklet that you may find useful. It is called Social Security: What Every Woman Should Know. You can find it online at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10127.html

HoWarD Pyle: American master rediscovered. Howard Pyle (1853 – 1911) was one of America’s most popular illustrators and storytellers during a period of explosive growth in the publishing industry. A celebrity in his lifetime, Pyle’s widely circulated images of pirates, knights, and historical figures were featured in publications such as Harper’s Monthly and were admired by artists and authors like Vincent Van Gogh and Mark Twain. Yet, despite his widespread popularity, Pyle’s reputation has survived only among illustration scholars and enthusiasts. Until now his work has been virtually omitted from the larger story of art. In celebration of the centenary of Pyle’s death, this exhibition presents a fresh perspective on Pyle’s familiar images, exploring his interaction with the art and culture of his time and effectively repositioning him within the broader spectrum of 19th-century art. This retrospective exhibition also marks the 100th anniversary of the Delaware Art Museum, which was founded in 1912 to preserve and exhibit Pyle’s work following his untimely death in November 1911. The Museum’s Centennial Celebration begins in November 2011 with the opening of Howard Pyle: American Master Rediscovered and ends in June 2013 with the exhibition Contemporary Illustrators Honor Howard Pyle. Public tours of Howard Pyle: American Master Rediscovered are available in Spanish language tours will be offered at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday March 4
