Enloe students speak out about arrests
Published Tuesday, June 4, 2013 by Taylor Shaw

RALEIGH – For area students, the end of the academic year brings them closer to summer vacation. For seven Enloe High students, it brought charges and arrests. A group of students were arrested on May 15 after pulling an end-of-year prank by throwing water balloons. Rumors circulated the balloons contained bleach and bodily fluids, however the students denied the accusations. The Coalition of Concerned Citizens for African-American Children invited the community to “Arresting and Suspending of Our Children” on May 30, just days after the incident. Held at Martin Street Baptist Church, three of the seven students and Kevin Hines, a parent who was also arrested, attended the event. Hines’ twin daughters are Enloe students. After witnessing a police officer’s harsh treatment of a student they arrested, he said, he went to speak to an administrator but was told to leave by officers. Police tried to force him out of the building. He said he was slammed against the wall and arrested for second-degree trespassing. “We all have a responsibility for everyone’s child,” he said. Roderick Hodge II, Kelton Hines, Christopher Coward and Robert Brown were charged with disorderly conduct. They and Hines were released from Wake County jail late Thursday. (Kelton and Kevin are not related.) Damarcus Cole was charged with resisting a public officer. He was in Wake County jail Friday morning under a $3,000 bond. Justin Mangum was charged with assault and battery. Deonte Ward was also charged with disorderly conduct. They remained in custody on Friday. The CCCAAC dubbed the group “Enloe seven plus one.”

“I got locked up for water balloons,” Hodge, 16, said. “I’m sitting here in this cell with all these other guys, and I really didn't do anything.” The seven said jail was a “frightening” and “different” experience. “I was kind of scared,” Kelton Hines, 16, said. “I didn't want to say much because I didn't know how people in there would take it, so I was kind of nervous.” Charges against Kevin Hines were dropped. He wants the same for the others. “I saw the young men sitting in jail with me,” he said. “As tough as they may seem on the outside, you could see the fear in their eyes.” The seven were also suspended for up to five days but were able to take end of grade tests. Renee McCoy, interim director of public relations with Wake County public schools, delivered a statement on the discipline policy: “The Wake County Public School System is responsible for providing a safe and optimal learning environment for all students. To that end, we continually review all policies and practices that affect student learning and discipline." The CCCAAC is a parent-based organization advocating for students who attend public school. The group is considering taking the issue to the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights and speaking at the next school board meeting on June 18.
