Implementing an ERP system requires a large commitment from the organization. Th e organization itself is what determines the success of an ERP implementation bu t certain factors can improve the successful implementation of the software. by Kenneth Hamlett, Ehow Contributor 1 min read original ERP systems touch almost every facet of an organization from manufacturing to pu rchasing and from accounting to marketing. One of the key factors for a successf ul implementation comes in the form of a corporate sponsor. A corporate sponsor represents someone at the "C" level of a corporation (chief executive level) tha t fully supports the project. Business needs and conflicts between departments w ill exist, even with the best pre-planning efforts, but with "C" level sponsors these conflicts get resolved based on what's best for the company as a whole. A problem-free ERP implementation does not exist, but with proper pre-planning a lot of issues can be resolved prior to the start of implementation. Pre-plannin g involves multiple meetings with the selected ERP vendor and the implementation team. Oftentimes the vendor does not fully understand the business goals of the company. It is during this pre-planning phase that the vendor and the implement ation team fully realize the scope of the project. Implementing an ERP requires a large number of resources, both financial and hum an. It's always best to have a dedicated implementation team comprised of the va rious functional groups within the organization such as MIS, demand planning, ac counting, marketing and finance. Without dedicated resources the implementation phase tends to linger past the official "go live" date and other commitments fro m team members come into play, affecting the efficacy of the implementation. Focus on the business requirements of the organization. Too often companies get bogged down in the technical aspects of implementation or the individual require ments of each department or division. The goal of the ERP is to provide complete resources for the entire enterprise, not just one division or department. The t echnical aspects need to take into account the business requirements and not tec hnology for technology's sake. Don't stray away from the business objectives in lieu of a more technical implementation. The project plan functions as the road map for the implementation. A realistic p roject plan is essential to a successful implementation. A realistic project pla n has flexible content and does not force unrealistic completion dates during th e various phases of implementation. The project plan acts as the reporting tool for weekly update meetings. The project plan gets updated with the most current timelines, resources and budget information.
