Escape. that was why Katie Isobel Brown had packed up her life and her daughter Nikki and moved to Cherrygrove, Texas. She'd left behind the safe confines of Dallas along with the huge support system of family to open a shop hundreds of miles from home. It'll only take a few hours, Katie reminded herself, to visit her family. She'd needed to leave, get out of the city and stand on her own two feet. She had relied on her family for too long now and she had Nikki to think of. She glanced over to the passenger seat where her beautiful three year old daughter was napping in her car seat.

Her mind drifted back four years, to Paris and the man who she had met there. , the one that disappeared so quickly from her life without a word. He didn't even know he had a daughter. All Katie had known was is name, Logan, his age, she'd known his favourite food and that he couldn't stand opera and red wine and may other useless things but she had no idea where he came from, somewhere in Texas was all he'd told her. Snap out of it, Katie mentally thought to herself no matter what happened she would never regret it, he gave her Nikki. It was only four o'clock in the afternoon and Nikki would soon awaken so they could start their new lives.

Katie pulled up outside the only grocery store in Cherrygrove and decided to pick up a few things she needed. She reached over and woke her daughter, thinking how glad she was they had arrived.

"Come on sweetie" Katie said to her daughter as she lifted her from the car seat.

"Mama, sleep" Nikki mumbled, burrowing into Katie's neck.

"We're her Nik" she said knowing it would wake her up from her deep slumber.

"Yayy" Her daughter¶s enthusiasm for a new place and new people outweighed her desire to sleep.

Katie grabbed her handbag and her daughter¶s favourite toy.

"Let's go baby, we need to get some food before we go to the house" She told her daughter.

"Sweetie mama?" Nikki pleaded, her eyes widening into a look of pure, innocent pleading.

"Mmm ... maybe´ Katie replied, grinning at her. She noticed the curious glances they got from the few people in the store but they'd get used to her she hoped. She needed this to work; Katie was going to make this work.

"Which one do you want, Nikki?" She signalled to the sweets.

"Pink please mama."

"Come on then hunny" Katie said as she grabbed the candy.

"Hi there" the shop attendant greeted them.

"Hello"

"I don't think I've seen you around here before."

"No, I'm Katie, this is my daughter Nikki, we just moved from Dallas."

"Hi there Nikki, I'm Haley" The girl smiled, she was quite young, younger than Katie's 23.

"Hiya. Look mommy - dog" Nikki squealed pointing outside to the huge black Labrador.

"I see it sweetie" Katie smiled at her little girl, "Come on".

"Thanks" she said to Haley.

"Bye Nikki" Haley waved to the adorable little black haired, green eyed child. She couldn't help but think she resembled someone.

10 minutes later and Katie was in trouble, there was an ominous amount of smoke snaking out from the hood of her ancient car. Shit, Katie thought to herself.

"Nikki, baby, we're gonna have to walk for a little while, the cars sick. We have to leave it here."

"All alone?" The stricken look on her daughters face made Katie want to smile at Nikki's feelings towards inanimate objects.

"Yeah, but we'll come back and get it soon."

"Make it all better?"

"Yes hunny"

15 minutes later Katie was carrying her.

"We're nearly there sweetie; do you think you could walk for a little while?"

"Can't. Up." Nikki pleaded, it took a further ten minutes for them to reach town and the grocery store was the closest building.

"Hi, again" Katie greeted Hailey who was still standing behind the counter.

"Are you okay?" Hailey asked noticing Katie's flushed face and Nikki buried in her arms.

"My car broke down, is there a mechanic around here?"

"Yepp, it's just down the road, MacDonald brothers own it"

"Okay, thank you" Katie said, smiling tiredly.

The mechanics was easy to find, the garage doors wide open and the eye catching red and blue sign that read "MacDonald Brothers". The only sign of anyone around were the oily boots sticking out of an ancient Mercedes.

"Excuse me" Katie attempted to gain the mechanics attention over the Guns n Roses blaring out of the radio. "EXCUSE ME".

When she still relieved no answer Katie reached over and pulled the cord for the radio out of the wall.

"What the ...?" Lucas pulled himself out from under the car, "Can I help you?" The girl was beautiful, long, flowing hair, and dark dark eyes. The child was just as striking as her mother, sea green eyes and hair as dark as coal like his brothers.

"My car broke down about twenty minutes out of town."

"Okay, I'll get a tow, I'll just get my brother" Lucas said and wandered off towards the office wondering what a woman like her and her child were doing this far out. She wasn't exactly usual for Cherrygrove. "Logan, there's a woman out here, needs a tow."

"Okay" as Logan looked up at the woman he felt a blow of shock, "Katie?"

"Hello Logan" She said coldly.

"Mama, up" Nikki said, drawing Logan's attention to the child that strongly resembled his mother and his mouth fell open, eyes questioning he stared at Katie who looked slightly guilty.

"Hello Logan. It's been a long time." Katie said coolly although there was a telltale shaking in her hands and a slight, undetectable waver in her voice that highlighted her nervousness at the sight of this man. Pull it together she thought to herself as she lifted her little girl into her arms. His gaze was drawn to their daughter, eyes flitting towards Nikki then back to Katie's face questioningly. "This is Nikki."

"Mama gotta pee pee." Nikki pleaded.

"Sorry, is there a toilet in here?" Katie directed the question towards Lucas.

Logan was too dumbfounded to answer.

"Yeah, it's just through the office." Lucas showed her, once they had shut the door he turned to his brother, "You know her?"

"Remember when mum and dad died? I was in Paris."

"Yeah you said you met someone... ohh that's her."

"Luc, the little girl, she looks like mom, she has our eyes."

"Yeah she does." Lucas replied, calmly.

"Jesus Christ, I never thought I'd see her again."

"Do you wish she hadn't turned up?" He asked, probing none too subtly.

"Christ no I ... I missed her if you understand that, it was only a little while we were together and we didn't spend that much time talking but it felt right, we felt right God it's so clichéd." Logan said with a shaky laugh. He was lost in memories, of another country, he'd wondered into a little café and seen Katie she'd been smiling at customers she was serving and as she looked up the breath had left his body. With her dark hair pulled back her huge brown eyes and gorgeous lips had been showcased and in that moment he'd known she was perfect for him.

"Sorry, I'm in the middle of potty training her." Katie said as she followed Nikki out of the bathroom, breaking Logan out of his memories.

"I get a dollar every time I go to the toilet." Nikki said proudly from behind the ragged, beloved toy she carried. Katie blushed at this announcement and Lucas and Logan laughed.

"Mama, can we go see uncwl James, pwees." Nikki pleaded.

"Aw baby remember we'll see Uncle James and everyone on Sunday."

"Oki can I have my sweetie?"

"Here you go." Katie said, softly brushing some hair from her little girl¶s delicate face. She glanced up to see Lucas and Logan staring at her.

"What ?" Katie asked, feeling a blush work it's way up her neck.

"Nothing." Logan said "What are you doing here?"

"I moved here, I'm going to open a shop down the road. An interiors shop, knick-knacks, homey things. I bought a house, it's about half an hour outside town it's got a garden for Nikki." Katie replied knowing she was rambling but unable to stop.

"Katie needs a tow Logan, her car broke down." Lucas reminded him quietly, giving the chance of some time alone.

"Okay, do you want me to drop you at the house then bring the car here?"

"Could we go to the car first, I need to get my tings out of it."

"Sure, I'll go get the forms, Luc you bring the truck round."

Katie was left alone with Nikki and as she looked around the office, taking it all in she couldn't help but feel the old, familiar pain of being abandoned by Logan. She knew they hadn't been together all that long and even if it hadn't meant anything to Logan, although at the time he'd sworn it had, he could have told her he was leaving. He'd left her, never knowing she was pregnant, scared and so alone with no way to contact him.

"Right, just fill these out then we'll go and get your car." When Logan looked at her he saw the mask fall back over her face. Katie sat Nikki on one of the chairs in the small, cluttered office and took the other for herself, Logan settled himself on the other side of the desk hating not just the physical but the emotional distance between them.

Nikki immediately started investigating the desk, pulling out a photograph that Logan kept there.

"Look mama, it's you." Katie looked over distractedly her eyes falling immediately to the grinning faces of her and Logan, he was behind her, his arms wrapped around her waist from behind, chin settled on her shoulder and smiling gently into her happy face. It was the emotions portrayed on their faces that had her looking towards Logan.

"We looked so happy." Logan said, but that was an understatement the emotions portrayed on their faces could only be explained as utter bliss, love shone from their eyes, the easy grins and familiar stance showed their sheer comfort within each other¶s presence.

"We were." Katie said simply. "Things change. I'm done with these." She said and suddenly any sense of familiarity was gone, she sheathed herself in a cool demeanour as protection.

"Come on sweetie." Katie said to Nikki as she took her from the chair, making their way outside, Logan couldn't help but feel as if he'd lost something precious as he watched them walk away. He watched as she climbed into the truck and strapped Nikki in. He could see the worry etched into her face about the lack of car seat. He

grabbed the keys from the table and joined them in the driver¶s seat, he couldn't help but stare down at the little girl sat between Katie and himself, there was a clenching feeling in his stomach as she looked up at him, hope that she was his child? It shocked him, when he really looked at her, Nikki looked so like both of her parents, a mini replica of Katie but the eyes were all his.

"Hi." She said simply, her dimples peeking out as she looked up at him. Lucas smiled down at her and couldn't help the rush of emotions that flooded his heart with warmth. Katie and he were going to have to have a long talk.

Forty five minutes later and he had pulled up outside the tiny, two bed roomed cottage that now belonged to Katie.

"Thanks for the ride, call me with an estimate for the car." Katie said in way of farewell.

"Mama are we there?"

"Sure are, mama's just gotta get our stuff from the car." She replied lifting her daughter to the ground. "I'll be two minutes then you can leave." She added to Logan. Fat chance, he retorted silently.

"I'll give you a hand." He said and was out of the truck and helping before Katie could decline.

"Is the house furnished?" Logan asked noting how little furniture they seemed to have brought.

"Some, enough until I get the shop set up and buy more." Katie replied icily. As she opened the front door she couldn't help the wave of excitement she felt, she couldn't wait to start decorating. She knew she would have to explain to Logan about Nikki at some point but she didn't want it to be just now. Katie set up the portable play pen and sat her daughter inside, giving her the millions of cuddly toys and games from one of the numerous bags as Logan brought in the last of the boxes.

"Katie we need to talk." He said to her as she handed Nikki toys.

"Yeah I know we do, but not in front of Nikki, we'll go into the kitchen." She replied, resigning herself to the fact they would have to discuss this just now. She turned to Nikki, "Sweetie we're going into the kitchen you sit here and play with your toys, be good for mama."

"Okay mama." Nikki replied, Katie kissed her forehead thinking how much she loved her little girl.

"She's my daughter isn't she?" Logan said, once they reached the confines of the small kitchen.

"No, she's mine but if you're asking who donated the sperm. Yeah it was you."

"Why didn't you tell me, Kat?" He asked, not even realising he'd reverted back to his name for her.

"How the hell was I meant to do that? You abandoned me in Paris with no way to contact you other than the mobile which you left in our room."

"I came back later, too late, you were already gone."

"What, was I meant to wait around, see if you'd reappear? Of course I left, I came home when I realised I was pregnant. Why did you leave in the first place Logan?" He knew it was his fault he never knew about Nikki and he owed her an explanation.

"After you left for work I got a call from Lucas, my oldest brother, the one you met today. Anyway he phoned t o tell me that our parents had been in a car crash, my dad died on impact and my mom was in critical condition in a coma. I phoned and booked a flight as soon as I knew. I was out of my mind with grief Kat and I was going crazy with worry about my mom. When I finally made it to the hospital she was only just clinging on, Lucas, Shawn and Malachi, my other brothers, were already there. She came out of the coma a few minutes later, told us to stick together no matter what and we were the only family we had and needed then she was gone. She held on until all four of us were there, she already knew dad was gone, they would never have survived without each other." As Katie looked at him, she saw the grief etched on his face, the lines of pain and weariness making her want to take him into her arms and hold him forever. "That's why there was no goodbye."

"Logan, I'm sorry, really sorry. I wish I ... I don't really know... I wish so many things."

"I didn't tell you for your pity, I just wanted you to understand why I left and how much I wish things had turned out different. I never would have left you Katie."

"I understand that now Logan and I get why you left, I'd have probably done the same thing and as worthless as it is I forgive you but I've got to think about Nikki -"

"So have I, I hate that I've missed out on so much of her life, of your life but I'm not going to miss any more." Katie just stared at him, watching as he made his way over to her before wrapping his arms round her waist. She couldn't help but lean in, smell his familiar smell that she'd only dreamed about for so long.

"Mama, I'm hungry." Nikki demanded, interrupting their embrace and making Katie jump away and flush, Logan chuckled.

"I'm just making dinner sweetie, do you want some juice?" She asked from the doorway of the kitchen, that linked it to the living room where Nikki was.

"Logan, could you get the grocery bags, please, I assume your staying for dinner." She said without looking at him.

"Sure, Kat." He said as she rummaged through boxes until she reached cutlery, plates and glasses. She'd bought the makings for fajitas and sausages and mash for Nikki. When Logan brought the bags in and started putting the groceries away she handed him a bottle of apple juice.

"Could you give that to Nikki for me?"

"Sure." He said, taking it out to his daughter. That sounded strange, nice but strange, his daughter. Nikki took the cup from him but continued to stare at him, "I'm Logan."

"Hello Logan, 'is is Dolly." She told him seriously, pointing at her favourite toy.

"Nice to meet you Dolly." Logan greeted shaking it's plastic hand and making Nikki giggle.

"Up." She demanded, lifting her arms to him. Unsure of himself, Logan reached down and wrapped his hands around her tiny body, as he pulled her into his body she settled her head on his chest, curling up in his arms.

"Logan?" Katie questioned from the kitchen, when he walked in with Nikki Katie was shocked. She reached out to take her daughter but Nikki just clung on tighter. "She likes you; she doesn't usually trust people so quickly."

"Yeah, well I'm a likeable person and I'm her dad, maybe she just knows."

"Logan, do any of your brothers have children?"

"No." He replied, unsure of where this was going.

"Do you have any apart from Nikki? Are you married?" There was a horrible feeling in the pit of Katie's stomach as she asked.

"No to both." Logan replied, he didn't like the wary look in her eyes. "Katie I want to get to know Nikki and you again."

"Here's the thing, although I understand why you left I can't trust you. Ever since I found out about being pregnant I've had trust issues. You have no idea how to look after Nikki."

"So let me learn, let me spend time with the two of you. Find your trust in me Katie. Let's just see where this goes. Why don't we do something on Sunday?"

"My family are coming down."

"Great, I'll come over at about one."

"But Logan-" She was interrupted by the oven beeping signalling the food was ready.

"Katie, please just give me a chance,"

"Okay, Sunday but I'm warning you now three brothers, two sisters, my parents, uncles their families. Everyone's coming and they're all really overprotective of me and Nikki. Bring your brothers if you want." Katie added, thinking he might need the extra support.

"Alright, dinner's ready. Could you get Nikki's seat it's in the living room." She asked as it raised Nikki up so she could eat at the table.

"Okay." Logan said, reluctantly trying to hand Nikki over and back to Katie but she just clung on.

"No. Logan."

"Honey he'll be back in a minute." Katie told the little girl, amused, her daughter was never this clingy towards anyone except for her mama.

"No mama, want Logan."

"Guess that's me told then." She said and went to fetch the seat herself.

"Mama watch this." Nikki said when she came back as Logan reached behind Nikki's ear making a quarter appear then fisting his hand so it disappeared and Nikki giggled.

"Wow baby." Katie said, exaggerating.

**********

That night when Logan walked into the kitchen he shared with his brothers, he was mildly surprised to find all three of them sitting around the table.

"Hey, what are you guys doing?" He asked, pretty sure he knew why they were there.

"Got anything you want o tell us?" His youngest brother, Shawn, asked taking a swig from his bottle of beer.

"I have a daughter." Logan watched as there faces dropped in a look of shock.

"Who? How?" Malachi, the son between Shawn and him asked.

"Her name's Nikki, she's three she has my eyes and looks just like Katie. You guys should see her she looks so much like Kat."

"Sorry who is Kat?" Shawn asked.

"Nikki's mom, she's amazing. She's funny and gorgeous and stubborn and a little bit hostile."

"When did this happen?" Malachi asked.

"Four years ago, in Paris. Before mom and dad died." Logan said, telling them everything.

"How come they're here then?" Lucas asked, although he'd met them he didn't know the full story.

"She moved here, she's opening a shop. Oh we're ALL going to their house on Sunday, Katie's having some family thing and I said we'd all be there."

"You what?" Malachi asked, sceptically.

"I said we'd go."

"Why would you do that?" Shawn asked.

"Did I mention she has two sisters."

"Sisters, hmm." Shawn mused.

"Okay, but what about Katie, how does she feel about all this?" Malachi asked, he was the most serious of the four.

"She's adapting, still doesn't trust me yet." Logan said, smiling.

"Ready mama?" Nikki asked impatiently, she was dressed in her favourite yellow dress with little yellow clips in her hair.

"Just about baby." Katie replied, her little girl had been ready for the past hour, she looked herself over in the mirror. She was dressed in a white sundress nd her black hair flowed, naturally down her back to her waist, contrasting with her dress.

"Pretty mama."

"Thanks sweetie, you look beautiful."

"Mammaaaa." Nikki whined with impatience.

"Niikkkiiii." Just as Katie said it the doorbell rang, "Come on baby."

"Uncle Rafe! Hi Uncle James, Aunt Holly." Nikki greeted three of Katie's siblings who made their way into the house.

"Hey sweetie, Kat." Rafe pulled his baby sister and his niece into a fierce hug.

"Where's everyone else?" Katie wondered aloud as James hugged her.

"They're on their way."

"I missed you sis." Holly said as she gripped her little sister in a tight hug.

"I've only been gone three days."

"Yeah well it seems longer."

"Grammy, papa." Nikki wriggled until Katie released her and scooted over to meet her grandparents as they came through the door. Aidan and Rose came next, then Katie's two uncles Jack and Dean with their wives, Kelly and Sarah along with their children, Lucy, Brennagh, Tia, Sam and Brad.

Just as Aidan was setting up the barbecue Nikki shouted, "Logan" and made ran in the direction of the four males who'd come round the side of the house when they'd got no answer at the front door and heard Avenged Sevenfold's latest album playing from the back yard.

"Hey sweetie." Logan said ad he caught her up and swung her into his arms.

"Uncw James and Aidan and Rafe are here and so's Auntie Holly and Auntie Rose."

"Really, that's exciting." Logan said solemnly. He soon realised every eye in the garden was concentrated on the two of them.

"Wow, who are they?" Holly asked her sister, fanning herself jokingly.

"Well the one at the front, holding Nikki, is her dad." Katie said, abruptly, shocking her older sibling,

"Hmm they're gorgeous. WAIT WHAT???" Holly shouted, finally catching on.

"Mama, Logan's here." Nikki said as Katie approached them.

"I see that sweetie, Hey Logan, Hi Lucas you must be Shawn and Malachi right?" Katie mused.

"I'm Malachi." The only one of the four with brown hair said.

"And that must mean I'm Shawn." The youngest said, flashing her a killer smile.

"Come on then, I'll introduce you to everyone."

"Have you told them yet?" Logan asked as Nikki chatted away happily to Shawn and Malachi about her newest doll.

"Only Holly and I kinda dropped it on her, might as well tell them now." Katie replied before addressing her family. "This is Logan and his brothers, Lucas, Shawn and Malachi. Guys this is my family, my parents Joanna and Allan, brothers Aidan, Rafe and James, my sisters, Rose and Holly, my uncles, Jack and Dean and their wives, Sarah nd Kelly and their children, Lucy, Brennagh, Tia, Sam and Brad. Logan is Nikki's father." She announced, shocking pretty much everyone.

"Well, you've shocked them." Logan whispered as a shocked silence descended and a tall man with greying black hair approached, he looked like an older, male version of Katie.

"Nice to meet you Logan, I'm Katie's father Allan." Although aware of how Logan had left Katie, his wife had pretty much forced Allan to come over and introduce himself.

"Logan." Nikki said, patting his cheek to catch his attention from her spot in his arms.

"Yeah sweetie." Logan replied, looking down at her, eyes full of amusement and affection.

"Come and see uncle James' dog, its called Pirate and it's a asation."

"An Alsatian honey."

"That's what I said." Nikki reprimanded, her brow furrowing adorably.

"Sorry, my mistake." Logan replied indulgingly, placing a kiss on her brow so she smiled up at him. "Come on then baby. Sorry." He added to Allan.

"It's not a problem." Katie's father replied, wondering about the young man. He could see how gentle Logan was with Nikki, they seemed to have formed a bond which was surprising but he made a mental note to have a chat with him later, after he'd talked to his youngest daughter.

"Katie." Aidan shouted from where he was standing at the barbecue with Rafe and James, "Come and give us a hand." Katie rolled her eyes.

"Guys there's beer, and juice in the kitchen if you'd prefer, food will be ready sometime. Just make yourselves at home. I'll be over in a few minutes but I've got to go deal with my over protective, baboon, brothers." Katie smiled at the three guys, who all hd Logan's green eyes and dimples. She made her way over the modest garden. "There's three of you and you still need a woman to do the work." Katie joked, knowing full well why they shouted on her,

"Why didn't you tell us." James demanded, he was the youngest of the three but still four years older than Katie's twenty-four years.

"Because I only met him again on Wednesday, my car broke down, Logan and Lucas re the only mechanics in Cherrygrove."

"Nikki and him seem close." Rafe commented.

"I know, it's strange, apart from today and Wednesday the only time he's seen her was on Friday when he brought the car back and he was only here for ten minute but they seem so close." Katie wondered about that bond as she watched Logan play with Nikki and Pirate.

"Could you not have phoned or something, talk bout a bombshell." Aidan remarked.

"It just seemed easier to wait." Katie watched as her Uncles daughters wondered over to talk to their parents, Nikki and Logan had been joined by his brother, Malachi, Holly, Sam and Brad. "He's good with Nikki, isn't he."

"Yeah he is, but you still should have told us. I don't know how I feel about him being here after all this time."

"He's explained everything to me and I'll tell you later but please just give him a chance. For me. I'm going to talk to mom." Katie said making her way to where her parents were sitting with the rest of her family, including Shawn and Lucas.

"Hey sweetie." Her mom greeted.

"Hey, do you guys want a beer? Or there's juice or wine?" Katie asked Logan's brothers who were the only ones, beside herself, who didn't have one.

" A beer would be great thanks." Lucas said.

"I'll have the same" Shawn said smiling, his dimple winking. Katie grinned back, walking into her tiny kitchen. The window faced out into the back garden, it looked like one of those pictures, the whole family, kids racing round,

adults laughing while someone manned the barbecue. She looked for Logan and Nikki but couldn't see them anywhere.

"Hi mama." Nikki squealed, apparently the kids had brought their water pistols as Logan was soaked from head to toe.

"Hi sweetie." Katie reached over to take her soggy daughter from Logan but yet again Nikki just wrapped her arms around his neck tighter.

"Looks like she wants he daddy." Logan informed Katie, the word rolling off of his tongue surprisingly easily.

"Logan, dad?" Nikki questioned, confused.

"Yes sweetie, Logan is your dad." Katie told her, smiling.

"Daddy kiss." Nikki demanded and Logan kissed her cheek making Nikki giggle.

"No silly, kiss mama." She clarified. Katie had forgotten her daughters preoccupation with kisses.

"Logan, that isn't a good -" Katie was cut off as Logan leaned in, he stopped her flow of words with his mouth. The kiss was so much more than she remembered, hot and sweet and over much too quickly in her opinion.

"Katie." Logan breathed.

"Daddy, wanna go play." Nikki wriggled and he set her down, allowing her to run outside and play.

Just as Katie opened her mouth to speak Logan cut her off again, this time their kiss lasted much longer. Logan wrapped his arms around her slender waist and pulled her as close as possible. Katie lifted her arms round his neck, running her fingers through his hair. For the first few seconds she tried not to respond, knowing she should stop it but then, with a sigh, Logan felt her lips surrendering under his. His tongue delved into her mouth, exploring. She tasted so sweet and her mouth was so hot and soft, she tasted of strawberries and her skin felt silky smooth and delicate under his hands, making him hard. She moaned softly causing him further arousal. Katie could taste the mintiness of his toothpaste on her tongue, his hair was soft under her fingers. She felt like she was on fire, she could feel the hard length of his obvious arousal pressing against her.

Just then the kitchen door burst open.
