Bright lights blinded her as she raised her head, banging on something metal above her. Rubbing where she hit her head, Claire groaned crouching down. When her vision finally cleared, immediate fear and confusion filled her mind. W-where am I? Loud barking filled the room, echoing loudly in the large dog cage she was being held in. It was about 5 feet by 4 feet, just enough room for a large breed of dog. Claire wrapped her fingers around the small bars, trying to get a better view of the place. It was a nasty smelling room with bright blinding lights at the ceiling, two or three exam tables in the center surrounded by tons of different instruments. Only one door promised an escape; there were absolutely no windows. Stacked along the walls were cages and cages of dogs, small breeds to large going from top to bottom. Carefully Claire reached for the clipboard hanging on the door of her cage, a cage that offered no means of escape.

Caution! Full Grown Wolf Very Aggressive and Deadly Suspected of Transmutation DO NOT TOUCH OR FEED!

Suspected of Transmutation? She read the words again and again, the night coming back to her. Claire had been in the city with her friend when a burglar assaulted them, changing to wolf form saved their lives.

Suddenly there had been a loud crack of a gun and a bright flash of light and everything had gone black. “Oh no, Oh no...” Just as the door of the room began to creak open, followed by a chorus of barking dogs, Claire changed back to her wolf form. “Yeah, it’s a beauty, but last night it gave a hell of a fight! Jerome almost lost his whole hand after the beast half-way tore it apart.” Two men were walking toward her, their large boots thumping on the ground sounding like thunder. Claire edged to the very back of her cage, pressing against the wall. “This morning it didn’t seem so scary.” “That’s because we managed to knock it out cold. Shit! Is it awake already?” One pair of the boots came thundering closer and faster until a man kneeled down peering into the cage holding the wolf. “Ah, hello there Sleeping Beauty.” Claire bared her teeth, but couldn’t stop herself from shaking. “It’s awake! Wow, Tommy, it sure hates you.” The next man came beside Tommy, peering into the cage laughing. “Aw, it’s trying to be scary.” With a long pole with a loop on the end, he shoved the long handle into the Cage jabbing it into Claire’s shoulder and into her haunches. Oh no you don’t! Snarling, Claire snapped at the pole, biting the end several times while the man continued to laugh. You think it’s funny, do you? Growling deep, Claire burst forward toward the men, slamming against the cage door quickly making the pole withdraw from the cage. As one of the men fell back cursing, she kept throwing herself at the

door of her cage, snarling at its bars. Stick your hand in here, I’ll take it off with one bite. “I told you it was a crazy beast, Jared!” Tom was laughing hard at his friend who’d fallen back in surprise. “Yeah, no kidding. Sure it doesn’t have rabies?” Jared sat up, looking at the end of his pole. “Wow, no wonder Jerome almost lost his hand, look at how bad this pole is bent… I’ve never seen a dog do this much damage.” Jared’s green eyes flickered to the wolf. “What’s her clipboard say?” He went to reach for it, but Claire’s threatening growl made him hesitate. “Well,” Tom grabbed for it as Claire slammed against the cage again snarling. Yes, please do some explaining. “The same ol’ stuff really, saying she’s a dangerous bitch ((girl dog!)) and all, but also Jerome added something about “transmutation”.” Jared snatched the clipboard out Tom’s hands. “What the hell is transmutation?” He asked, eyeing the word. “Um, like changing stuff. Like… a werewolf type thing.” Jared looked up, eyes widening, then peering into the cage at Claire, her white fur bristling. “You mean to tell me that wolf is a person?” Jared murmured. “I guess, but it seems a little childish to me.” With a smirk, Tom peered back down at the wolf. “Hey pretty wolf, is there a pretty girl behind all that fur and slobber?” Claire growled a deep response. “It seems like it understood you...”

“Change!” Tom stood and kicked the cage hard with the end of his boot laughing, sending Claire falling to the floor, her paws scrapping at the slippery bottom. “Change into a human!” He kicked it again just as Claire got back to her paws. No! Never! Not for you! She let out a sharp bark of protest just as the door opened again. No… not another. With a sharp whine, Claire backed quickly to the corner of the cage. “What are you boys doing messing with my prized animal?” A new voice yelled, sending the men scrabbling to their feet jumbling for an explanation. “Uh-ermm- uh, Jerome, we didn’t hurt it. We saw the word “transmutation” and wanted it to… well… transform.” Tom stuttered, elbowing Jared for a response. “Yeah, what he said. Is it true… is it a werewolf?” Jerome eyed the two, speculation in his gaze. “How do you suppose, a wolf randomly got into the middle the city, in an ally?” He played with his goatee, as if thinking. Claire’s stomach began to churn. What if he saw me change? Impossible… I’m always good at hiding my transformations! “Maybe it was a pet?” Jared shrugged, but then shrunk back as Jerome stepped forward, staring him down. “Then where did one of the Girls go?! There I was, following these two teens playing around with their credit cards like pieces of worthless paper, when I began to jump them they ran into a dark ally. There was a quick flash of light, and then there was a wolf snarling at me and only one girl. Where the hell did the other one go?” Jerome pointed at Claire. “Right there, boys!”

As all three men looked at Claire, she pressed low to the ground, shivering. This is not good… “See how she understands us? What common dog does that?” “So boss, what are you planning to do with her?” Tom spoke up hesitantly. “I'm not quite sure yet. Sell her? As a werewolf, she’d be worth more than a fortune. But the thing is getting her to change on our command. After all, who would believe us?” Jerome came to the cage, looking down on her. Claire stared back into his dark eyes, forcing back a whimper. Something is wrong with that man, he isn’t a normal human. His eyes…they’re different. He’s something… Claire kept her eyes on the men, a growl coming back to her throat. I will not give in to you. Do what you want. By giving into them and changing, she’d risk her whole pack and many others. Never. “Get to know her, boys. Charm her.” Jerome winked at them before turning on his heels heading for the door once more, all the barking silenced, while Tom and Jared stared at each other dumbfounded. CHAPTER 2 Once Jerome left, Jared put his hands to his face. “Oh great! Wonderful, we have to charm a wolf girl? What if the thing is just an ordinary wolf? This is stupid! And what, she’d be a teenager if she is human. How can we “charm” her?” He stomped around, glancing at the white wolf, until Tom held up his pointer finger. “I have an Idea. I’ll get my nephew!” Claire lay down, resting her head on her paws listening. Joy. “He’s 17 and pretty popular with the girls.”

“So we just tell him to come flirt with a wolf?” Jared looked unconvinced. “Yeah, I'm sure he’ll like that.” Tom shrugged, “Dogs are his favorite animal and he trained our German shepherd nicely, I’ll just tell him we have a wolf, or husky, for him to watch over.” He leaned in close to Jared keeping his voice low, forcing Claire to listen harder. “Perhaps our wolf girl will warm up to him and change?” Jared answered with a grin, his eyes darting to Claire. They nodded, confirming the plan. “I’d rather it be him getting eaten alive than me any day.” Both men turned to leave, slamming the door behind him. A chorus of Dogs barking erupted. Claire’s ears instantly hurt, making her make a shrill whine. I have to get out of here! Claire slammed herself against the cage’s door until her shoulder hurt. She looked for a latch, but nothing. There’s no way out, ya’ know. The new voice made Claire freeze and she glanced around eagerly for another wolf. Hello? Who was that? Through all the barking, the voice was clear in her head. I'm over here, in front of you. Claire’s amber eyes locked on a husky looking dog, gray and black. He panted, smiling a dog smile. You? You- you’re the one talking to me? Yeah, I am. Why, do you think it’s strange? The husky wagged his tail, shaking his fur out. I'm a lot like you, more than you realize. So is it true? You’re a human too?

Claire glanced away and down at her paws, fur prickling. Why do you care? Why do I care? It’s different, that’s why. You could help all of us get out. She sat up, cocking her head to the side at the husky. And how do you suppose I help? I’m not going to change with those men lurking about. I can’t show them who I am. That’s a shame. I’ve kept it up for years. What? Nothing. By the way, my name is Trevor, nice to meet you.
