Press Conference and press release on Launch of: “DUHS College of General Practice Pakistan” DUHSDay & Date: Saturday, November 26, 2011 Time & Venue: 2.00 pm at VC’s Office BoardRoom Members Present: 1.Patron- in-Chief: Honorable Vice Chancellor DUHS, Prof. Masood Hameed Khan, SI 2. Dr. Muhammad Yahya Khan, MBBS, MCPS, FRACGP Visiting Faculty Assistant Professor, Consultant Primary Care Physician, Member and Senior Examiner, Royal Australian College of General Practice, Queensland 3. Dr. Syed Shakeel Ahmad, MBBS, Senior Instructor PDC DUHS Working group Member and Coordinator. The Honorable Vice Chancellor DUHS, Professor Massod Hameed Khan had called the press for formal announcement of Pakistan College of General Practitioners DUHS. The vision was to bring about a sustainable change and development of the standards of General Practice in the General Physicians and other medical specialists practicing in the community to a national standard and international matching. The VC provided reasons and need for a dedicated College for Family Physicians for running various programmes in this regard. The ongoing CME activities and the experiences were shared with the media. A guest Family Medicine Consultant, Dr.Aziz Jiwani also expressed the need for improvement of GP’s standards as his observations. The Visiting Faculty and overseas Working Group member, Dr.Muhammad Yahya Khan, FRACGP was introduced by the VC and he gave his views and plans of a Fellowship program like in Australia. Dr.M.Yahya Khan proposed names of Dr.Najmul Islam and Dr.Aziz Jiwani to be included in the WG. This was followed by Q&A by the media reporters/personnel. Pakistan College of General Practitioners under the auspices of DUHS shall start functioning from January 2012 starting with a Modular ECME programme with access online and contact periods as an ongoing process across the country and beyond. The busy General Physicians could register for modules and earn certificates for a series of modules covering some 35 essential topics relevant to our local needs. The participants, who successfully complete the course, shall be awarded a Certificate of the College. PCGP would adopt various structured programs and develop over time a Diploma and a Fellowship either indigenously or through collaborations. DUHS shall write to the PMDC for making its Diploma a registrable qualification for the General Practitioners. This virtual programme shall be decentralized progressively to all other sister institutions so that it becomes a national program and inter-action possible at the local levels. The session concluded at about 3.15 pm. and lunch was served. A decision to float an advertisement for the registration of the online CME was advised by VC to the working group member & eCMe Program Coordinator in-charge, Dr.Syed Shakeel Ahmad, Sr. Instructor PDC, DUHS.
