EXPERT SYSTEM
• “An intelligent computer programme that uses
knowledge and reasoning procedures to solve difficult
problems that need certain expertise to solve the
problems.“
• An expert is a person that has the expertise and
knowledge of his specialised field. Examples of experts
are a heart specialist and a mathematics expert.
• Objective of an expert system
– To transfer expertise from an expert to a computer
system and
– Then on to other humans (nonexperts)
WHY NEEDED?
• To enable the use of expertise after working
hours or at different locations.
• To replace a retiring or an leaving employee
who is an expert.
• To hire an expert is costly.
• Example : Computer configuration assistant
• One of the most successful expert systems in
routine use.
CHARACTERISTICS
•
•
•
•
•
•
The Highest Level of Expertise
Right on Time Reaction
Easily Understood
Flexible
Good reliability
Heuristic Reasoning
Knowledge Base:
• The knowledge base contains the knowledge
necessary for understanding, formulating, and solving
problems
• Two Basic Knowledge Base Elements
– Facts
– Special heuristics, or rules that direct the use of
knowledge
Inference Engine
•
•
•
•
The brain of the ES
The control structure or the rule interpreter
Provides a methodology for reasoning
It is a process in the Expert System that pairs
the facts stored in the working memory with
the knowledge domain that is stored in the
knowledge database, to get the method from
the problem.
User Interface
• Language processor for friendly, problemoriented communication
• ES process language which enables interaction
and communication between the user.
• It enables the user to query the system, input
information and receive advice.
EXPERT SYSTEM
DEVELOPMENT
An Expert system team must consist of:
• A domain expert
• Knowledge engineer
• User
•
Consistency
Reliability
Transfer of knowledge
Combination of Knowledge and Expertise
from Various Sources
• Ability to Solve Complex and Difficult
Problems
DISADVANTAGES
•
•
•
•
•
•
Not Widely Used
Knowledge not always readily available
High development costs
Difficult to Maintain
Probable Decision Error
Difficult to Use
