THE PAST: SINCE 1840 The County court house in Hudson, New York, became the Birthplace of what is now the Chatham Fair, through a meeting which took place there and was attended by many respectable farmers." At the Fair Society's organization meeting Edward P. Livingston of Clermont, was elected as the inaugural president. The identity, Columbia County Agricultural Society, was made official with its stated purposed, "to improve the condition of agriculture, horticultural, manufactures and domestic economy." The first Columbia county fair was held in the city of Hudson on Tuesday, October 12,1841. Events were: seven classes of competition for horses, premium totaled $144.00: six classes for "Cattle cows" the premiums were $84.00: four classes for swine, $40.00: three classes for sheep, $30.00: one class each for cheese-$10.00, oxen-$18.00, hogs-$12.00and butter$14.00. Classes for manufactures took in satinett, flannel, linen and silk and involved premiums amounting to a total of $57.00. For best plough the Fair offered $15.00. In 1852 the Columbia county Fair was held in Chatham Four Corners, on September 29 and 30." 1853 annual meeting disclose that the receipts amounted to $369.90, disbursements, $357.00, bank balance, $12.90. The Society's first really big move came in 1856 when it purchased from a man identified only as Mr. Bullis, "15 acres of land in the village Chatham Four Corners, for $175.00 per acre. " Total investment-$2625.00". 1857 the Fair introduced harness racing, as we know it today. It was horse racing also referred to as "trials of speed." These first speed trials were raced for purses of $15, $10 and $5. Income for 1860 was $1.201.36, but expenditures at $1,214.59 for a net loss of $13.23. This marks the only occasion on which a loss is recorded to date of The Columbia County Fair operation. In 1871 the Committee purchased $60.00 worth of shade trees and have them set out about the 'grounds." This action unquestionably is responsible for the comfort of shade on the Chatham Fairgrounds, an ingredient which sets Chatham apart from many other county fairs. In 1881 the erection of a grandstand was authorized, and" admittance to the grandstand was 15 cents, good for one day. The next year the erection of a poultry house was approved, and later the same year approval was given for the construction of "suitable quarters for the

stabling of horses during the Fairs. In 1884 a new building was erected for horticultural and domestic purposes. It is well over 100 years old. On numerous occasions vandals have tried to set fire to the historic old structured but thus far it has withstood the vengeance of wind, lightning and the torch of the would be fire bug. 1888 Alfred Hunt built an octagon building for $267.00. This is the same Octagon Building that stands today and currently houses the 'Golda Combs' Quilt Contest. Worthy of note is that at the 1889 annual election John P. Mickle who had been prominent in the Chatham Fair picture for many years, passed the baton to his son, John D. Mickle, who was elected to the Board of Managers in 1900 and served the Fair with distinction for half-a-century, until his son, Philip D. Mickle came on board in 1951, he served as Fair director, president and treasurer for more than a quarter-century, bringing the combined Mickle service to practically 100 years. The 1909 race program featured a 2:23 pace and trot for Columbia County horses with the 'purse" being 50 bushels of oats. A like premium was offered in the 2:30 class. In 1915 a wind storm demolished the poultry house and part of the grandstand only a few days before the Fair opened. In 1956 that the Chatham Board of Education seriously considered the Chatham Fairgrounds as a likely site for a new elementary school building. The Fair Board lost no time addressing the matter and voted 12-0: "WE ARE NOT FOR SALE." The late Govern Nelson A. Rockefeller was the Fair's distinguished quest and speaker on Labor Day, in 1962. Governor Rockefeller returned to The Columbia County Fair in 1970 this time riding onto the Fairgrounds in full fire manic regalia, aboard Ghent Volunteer Fire Company's antique pumper. The new administration Building, which cost the Society $17,000.00 was put into use shortly before Fairtime in 1966. The same year twenty-three acres of vacant land were purchased from Marcus S. Wood of Chatham, at the south end of the Fairgrounds, for $12,000.00. This brought the total acreage to its present 55 and opened the way for a second admission gate for the grounds. Almost in desperation it was decided to open the Fair in 1969 on Thursday afternoon and thereby attempt to cope with the free preview that had taken over Thursday night. Over the preceding years this free Thursday night had developed crowds that halted exhibited setup, clogged authorized traffic and created chaos for the Fair management. In 1970 a metal structure was erected to be used primarily for food concessions, including the Fair's main restaurant "The Tower Club"which is presently being run by The Spencertown Church . © 2012 Columbia County Agricultural Society

A LITTLE MORE HISTORY ABOUT THE WASHINGTON COUNTY FAIR. Jerome B. Rice, who was the President of the Rice Seed Company which reputedly was the second largest and profitable seed company of the time, launched the Cambridge Fair which preceded the Washington County Fair and was the second largest in the State of New York He reported 32,000 people came to Cambridge for the 1907 Cambridge Fair. Many came by train, horse and buggy, and horseback from places as far away as Albany, Schenectady, Troy, Syracuse, nearby Vermont, and even Canada. Mr. Rice’s accomplishments and dedication to his community are truly remarkable especially so since he did this all from a wheelchair. Mr. Rice had rheumatisim, arthritis, and he was a Prisoner of War during the Civil War. The combination of these conditions crippled him for most of his adult life.

COME SEE US AT THE FAIR!

on which there was an intermission of labour and pleadings. In later centuries, on any special Christian religious occasion (particularly the anniversary dedication of a church), tradesmen would bring and sell their wares (even in the churchyards). Such fairs then continued annually, usually on the feast day of the patron saint to whom the church was dedicated. This custom was kept up until the reign of Henry VI, by which time there were a great many fairs kept on these patronal festivals, for example at Westminster on St. Peter's day, at London on St. Bartholomew's (the famous Bartholomew Fair, celebrated in Ben Jonson's play of the same name) and at Durham on St. Cuthbert's day. That part of a fair (commonly an American fair such as a county or state fair) where amusement park rides, entertainment and fast food booths are concentrated is called the midway, so named after the Avenue of Amusements at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Because of the great numbers of people attracted by fairs they were often the scenes of riots and disturbances, so the privilege of holding a fair was granted only by royal charter. At first they were only allowed in towns and places of strength, or where there was some bishop, sheriff or governor who could keep order. In time, various benefits became attached to certain fairs, such as granting people the protection of a holiday, and allowing them freedom from arrests in certain circumstances. The officials were authorized to do justice to those that came to their fair; eventually even the smallest fair would have had a court to adjudicate on offences and disputes arising within the fairground, which was called a pye powder court (from Old French pied pouldre, an itinerant trader, which literally means "dusty feet"), or pedes pulverizati. (Not to be confused with photographers called Paparazzi!)

BE SURE TO VISIT THE FARM MUSEUM! The Farm Museum displays artifacts of rural life in Washington County, New York during the 1800’s 1940’s. Many aspects of agriculture throughout the county are shown including: dairying, poultry, potatoes, crop production and ice harvesting. In addition to the main museum building, several authentic out buildings were moved to this location. These buildings include a corncrib, summer Kitchen, milk house, and a one-room schoolhouse complete with woodshed and outhouses. Our ancestors worked hard to produce the food needed for their own survival and the crops needed for the animals they kept. The local farmers developed many tools to make their work easier and faster. Some inventions were very successful and others never got off the local homestead. Mission: To cultivate an appreciation for agriculture by educating visitors about our rural heritage
