All students will be tested over the two weeks in November leading up to Thanksgiving. Overarching goal: How can I stay physically, socially and emotionally safe? Juniors/Seniors: The juniors and seniors have had numerous guest speakers throughout the fall semester. Sue Howland, School Adjustment Councilor, and intern Darcy Borowitz spoke with students about stress and transitions during their senior year. Junior students worked with Rebecca Steinberg, School Adjustment Counselor, discussing healthy and unhealthy relationships. Another guest speaker shared her family’s experience with dating violence and discussed with students how to help someone who is in an unhealthy relationship. Students have created and revised personal fitness plans to include a wellbalanced and individualized workout while meeting their own fitness levels and interests. Grade 10 Field Trip to Appleton Farms: Students have been working on building community within the class and respect for all learners. In September and October, my Outdoor Education classes were able to apply these goals in our walking field trip to Appleton Farms. Students participated in Outdoor Education games and helped the farm by working in the fields. Catherine Donovan, Food Service Director, joined us in October. We brought back some of our harvest and the kitchen staff cooked the vegetables and made a salad so students could experience freshly picked vegetables – it was delicious. Appleton Farms provided us with a wonderful educational experience beyond the school walls into the community at large. Students have been climbing on the outdoor elements since September and these learning experiences have provided them with numerous opportunities to develop their leadership skills while continuing to work on building a respectful community.
Fitness & Nutrition @FlTNESS How many people do you know who make fitness & health a serious part of their lives? Double that, surround yourself with motivated people!
Grade 9 Guest Speaker: Ms. Sue Howland, School Adjustment Counselor, has spoken to the class on two different occasions concerning stress and depression. She shared coping strategies to deal with stress and depression, ideas on how to have a smooth transition to the High School and resources students can tap into if they are having difficulties within their lives. As one of the teachers in the iPad pilot program, I have had the students utilizing the iPads in a variety of ways. Students have researched health topics, analyzed information and created presentations utilizing such apps as BookCreator to share their knowledge with their peers. Students have created their own personal fitness plans incorporating a wide variety of apps to meet their individual fitness levels and interests. Natalie Morrison, Librarian, will be working with the class over the next few weeks on the iPads. She will be teaching students additional research skills to help them evaluate and interpret information and then synthesize this information into a presentation utilizing the app, ExplainEverything.
