Hello PASS! Welcome back to the grind, everyone! I hope everyone had a relaxing and cozy holiday season, filled with spending time with your family and reconnecting with old friends. Although you may be far from home and enduring the cold weather, hopefully PASS has warmly welcomed you into the organization this past semester (or in the case you’re an alum, I hope heart-warming PASS memories have kept you company). Winter break, or those terribly small 5 day weekends I hear about from postgraduates, is a great time to recharge from the hectic lifestyle every fall season traps us in. From opening resents to rolling around in snow pants, a holiday season without spending time in the comfort of my home and with my loved ones during my childhood is simply unimaginable. All too often, as I continue on the ambiguous journey of starting my life, I tend to scramble for ideas of self-improvement. Many hours have been spent on Pinterest looking for clean eating regimens, and promises about limiting my time on social media have been made. We’ve all fallen in this trap, making a list of things we need to work on, and forgetting to pause and realize that the mountains we climb are from the mountains we build. Self-improvement isn’t just about weight, better budgeting, or bad habits. The small battles we fight are from within ourselves and to truly grow as an individual, we must have genuine reflections on how we feel about ourselves. Instead of letting what we aren’t CONSUME us, we should be mindful of all the personal qualities and values that we do have. Save the time you’ve allotted to create your list of inferiorities to appreciate the simple things we experience every day. At times it can be overwhelming to think we have to grow up, but we shouldn’t let this phase in our life rid us from the excitement we once experienced during the holidays in our childhood. Last semester year PASS did some soul searching; we’ve learned plenty of lessons about prioritizing and balancing. With high expectations and plenty of fresh ideas, we took small victories and worked hard to make them into larger victories. It is with my greatest confidence to say that the PASS E-board of the 2013-2014 school year has delved deeper in exploring Filipino and Filipino-American culture. From the themes of our General Body Meetings, to our first annual Philippine Culture Night, our intentions have been pure to our promise to preach awareness of our culture, and WHY the development of our culture is important to embrace. With these same ideals in mind, PASS would like to introduce a new theme coming to the forefront this semester, the development of leadership and a sense of BAYANIHAN for our new members. Bayanihan in Tagalog normally refers to a spirit of communal unity and cooperation. It is our hope that not only will we be role models to our new members, but to help inspire the younger generations of Filipino-Americans by means of “bayanihan” for the incoming PASS generations to come. We invite you to take a look at some of the themes of our GBMs this past semester, and hope you may recognize some old traditions and events coming back for this semester. We’re bringing home the rice bowl this year! Cheers to a year of new beginnings! Kelly Ilagan

MESSAGE FROM VICE PRESIDENT
What’s up PASS people! I hope everyone had a joyful Christmas and Happy New Year. Fall 2013 was a terrific semester for our organization, and I am very proud of what we accomplished. Our executive board set high goals and I certainly believe that we exceeded them! One of our main goals was to carry out actions that would represent our theme for the year, which was “changing the mentality” My interpretation of “changing the mentality” was to instill leadership in our members. To no longer be satisfied with mediocrity and strive to become a leader. To have pride in who you are and where you’re from through cultural enlightenment. This organization proved that it was moving toward stronger leadership shortly after Typhoon Haiyan hit the homeland by hosting our first Philippine Culture Night. Through our hard-working members and heavyhearted supporters, our PCN fundraiser was a success. Donating $1000+, clothes, and non-perishable foods to the typhoon victims in the Philippines was most definitely my favorite highlight of the semester. Along with PCN, many other areas of our semester were also successful. PASS gained a good bunch of new active members that show loads of potential. Every general board meeting was packed with cultural teachings, but still remained fun. Our networking was at an all time high with APASO, Filamcco, and MAFA organizations. Our membership and finances are looking healthy! There really isn’t enough space in this newsletter to tell you how pleased I am with our first half of the school year! Lastly, congratulations to our new eboard additions this spring semester. I hope all of our PASS alumni are doing well. I hope to see many of you for our alumni weekend this upcoming semester. I’d like to thank all the students, friends, and families that have supported PASS this past year. May you all have a great and successful year in 2014. Look forward to what we have in store this year! Isang Pamilya, Isang Mahal Jerry Vedua

SPARTICIPATION & CULTURAL REMIX

Every year, MSU hosts an event called Sparticipation, where students, mainly freshmen, go to find clubs that they might be interested in. This year it was unfortunate that we were moved to the Breslin Center, and were placed in the basement. Nonetheless, we managed to meet many people and got them to come out to our first GBM for which we had a full house. Every year it is important that we deck out at Sparticipation because it is the main event that we meet the most people at and this year we were fortunate to make the best out of the situation we were put in. On the other hand, Spartan Remix is another event and like a smaller version of Sparticipation. This year Ray Wanninger, one of PASS’ Eboard members, was fortunate enough to perform guitar at the event and represent PASS. We managed to extend many invitations on that day, and overall, it was a great event because it was outside and the weather was great. PASS also managed to demonstrate Tinikling by the side of our booth, attracting a variety of people of different ethnic backgrounds, because it is by nature a very fun dance. Overall, it was a great experience to be able to show off PASS at Spartan Remix, and we hope to broaden our circles at future events.

FIRST GBM: INTRO TO PASS
The first GBM of the year was a general informational meeting about the exciting opportunities and events PASS had to offer this school year. PASS eboard became creative and hopped on the Vine line and made a short video explaining what PASS was all about. They then moved on to the icebreaker where members were split up into groups. Each group had a roll of toliet paper and was instructed to take as much as they would usually need. They then had to reveal one fact about themselves to the group for every sheet of toliet paper they had. It was an awesome way to learn about the new members that came out and a way to learn more about our visitors from the University of Michigan organization, FASA. The eboard members then explained more in depth about each section in PASS: from the Ate/Kuya Program (AKA Program) to PASS Dance Crew (PDC). Fried rice, egg rolls, empanadas, and pancit was also served. Overall, the first GBM this year was very successful. PASS gained great new members, who will hopefully keep the organization as successful as it already is.

BREAKING STEREOTYPES

During the Fall Semester, PASS held numerous general body meetings, including a “Stereotype” meeting and a “Passport” meeting. During the “Stereotype” meeting, members, along with the executive board were able to discuss issues regarding their Filipino/ Asian background. It gave members a chance to speak about their experiences and hear other’s stories about the good and bad issues that surround their life.

[PASS]PORT TO THE PHILIPPINES

Another meeting that was held was the “Passport” meeting, in which the members were able to learn about three regions of the Philippines: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. They were able to visit a section of the Vincent Chin Room which referred to one of the three locations, then were able to view a short PowerPoint on the region and enjoy food from each region.

8

ALUMNI WEEKEND

PASS had a nice turnout for this semester’s alumni weekend as the Spartans took on the Hoosiers for the Homecoming game. Festivities included a Tutti Frutti social, the annual alumni tailgate, and ended with a picnic at Valley Court. Alumni from across the country came back to East Lansing to bond with old classmates and meet the new members of PASS.

PASS CIDER MILL SOCIAL

In October, PASS had a cider mill social at Uncle John’s Cider Mill. The designated car rides provided a chance for everyone to get to know each other more. There, we had a taste of the fall weather, hot cider, and a delicious variety of donuts. There were wonderful smells everywhere as PASS had the time to bond and enjoy the place. Accompanying the festive atmosphere was a live singing performance while everyone snacked and chatted. We also explored the little shops at the cider mill and found many cool trinkets and Halloween-themed goods. There was also the option of exploring the endless apple fields, and of course, the cider mill wouldn’t have been complete without pictures by the pumpkin patch underneath the moonlight. Even though the weather began to get colder, the unity of PASS brought warmth through this social.

FIRST PHILIPPINE CULTURE NIGHT!
In collaboration with the Filipino-American Community Council of Michigan (FILAMCCO), PASS was able to contribute towards the relief effort for the Typhoon Haiyan victims in the Philippines. With the help of donations and fundraising, PASS was able to donate just over $1,000! The first annual Philippine Culture Night (PCN) was a night filled with cultural performances, talented performances from our affiliate organizations, and the PASS adviser Terese Monberg as the keynote speaker, all with the purpose to showcase what we believed embodies FilipinoAmerican culture. The event concluded with dinner featuring our favorite Filipino foods and line dancing music!
