Biblioasis A Very Small Something
David Hickey
Illustrated by Alexander Griggs-Burr
Somewhere past the wrinkled maps, and under another sun, where favourite earrings find new ears and missing marbles run, the hillsides made their marvelous shapes for a town called Covington— And a great pink factory as long as the breeze weighed truckfuls and truckfuls of bubblegum. Olivia Bezzlebee lives by the sea in a fantastic town with the world’s biggest bubblegum factory, where its citizens blow bubbles all day. But Olivia can’t blow a single one and feels as if everyone looks down on her. Leaving Covington to find a place where she might belong, she learns the true meanings of family and home. A Very Small Something, beautifully illustrated by Alexander Griggs-Burr, is a story to which all children—and any tuned-in parent—will be able to relate. Blowing bubbles may indeed be a very small something . . . but when you are a small child and it’s the thing you most want to do, a bubble can mean the whole world. David Hickey is one of the leading young poets in Canada, and the author of two collections, including Open Air Bindery. He has tested his children’s poems in schools across the country for the last seven years. He is finishing a PhD at the University of Western in London, Ontario. Alexander Griggs-Burr illustrated the Ontario Library Association Red Maple– nominated Nieve in 2010. He lives and works in Stratford, Ontario.

Cinco Puntos Press The Blood Lie
A Novel
Shirley Reva Vernick
“Unfortunately, incidents like this aren’t relegated to the past. Blood libels happen today and will continue to happen—if we allow it!”—Ilan Stavans September 22, 1928, Massena, New York. Jack Pool’s sixteenth birthday. He’s been restless lately, especially during this season of more-times-at-thesynagogue than you can shake a stick at. If it wasn’t Rosh Hashanah, then it was Yom Kippur, and if it wasn’t Yom Kippur, it was the Sabbath. But temple’s good for some things. It gives him lots of time to daydream about a beautiful but inaccessible Gentile girl named Emaline. And if she isn’t on his mind, then he’s thinking about his music and imagining himself playing the cello with the New York Philharmonic. Yup, music is definitely his ticket out of this remote whistle-stop town—he doesn’t want to be stuck here one more minute. But he doesn’t realize exactly how stuck he is until Emaline’s little sister Daisy goes missing and he and his family are accused of killing her for a blood sacrifice. Shirley Reva Vernick’s interviews and feature articles have appeared in Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Ladies’ Home Journal, and national newspapers. She also runs a popular storytelling website, StoryBee, which is used in schools and libraries all over the world. Shirley grew up in the town where the blood libel happened, as did her father, whose family was directly victimized by it.

Enchanted Lion Books Kangaroo for Christmas
James Flora
The day before Christmas, Kathryn’s present from Uncle Dingo arrives in a big box. Naturally, it’s a lively kangaroo. Kathryn can’t wait to show grandma, so she hops onto Adelaide’s back and off they go! But getting to Grandma’s proves more difficult than expected. Honking horns and screeching breaks frighten Adelaide into taking off on her own. In good James Flora fashion, chaos and pure silliness ensue. When Kathryn and Adelaide finally arrive at Grandma’s house, a very cool and collected Grandma sees there’s nothing to be done but to get them home as swiftly as possible. A rumpus of a read, Kangaroo for Christmas is a merry Christmas tall tale full of witty illustrations that are sure to draw laughs and hoots of pleasure. James Flora (1914–1998) was a famous commercial artist from the 1940s through the 1980s. He wrote and illustrated seventeen picture books. This is the second Flora title to be brought back into print by Enchanted Lion Books. The first, published in 2010, was the 1957 book The Day the Cow Sneezed.

In Allah’s Green Garden
Dawud Wharnsby
“Dawud’s latest book A Picnic of Poems is another masterpiece of poetry that captures the essence of every child’s hopes, dreams, and fears, in the most colorful and imaginative way. It is a delectable treat for the whole family, filled with beautiful illustrations. Every part has a wonderful lesson to draw from and will provide all, young and old, with great guidance for generations to come.”—Zain Bhikha, South African singer/songwriter “A Picnic of Poems” I’ve packed some poems for lunch, some rhymes for us to chew, a simple, sippy, soup of songs, to stir and sing and stew. Like all good meals to munch, it would be very rude not to begin with bismillah, to bless our poetry food. This is a collection of thirty poems to keep the young and young-at-heart entertained for hours. These poems cover a number of topics including motherhood, daily prayer, baby siblings, life on a farm, the animal kingdom, bullying, mosques, Ramadan, appreciating nature, and more. The book comes with an audio CD to sing along to these joyful yet educational poems. Canadian-born Dawud Wharnsby began writing poetry, composing music, and performing in his teens. Since then he has become a voice for socially conscious and spiritually minded individuals in the twenty-first century.
A dazzling collection of thirty poems to keep the young and young-at-heart occupied for hours!

Leapfrog Press Riding on Duke’s Train
Mick Carlon
“Duke used to say that the individual sound of a musician revealed his soul. Mick Carlon is a ‘soul’ storyteller.”—Nat Hentoff, author of Jazz Country “A ripping good yarn. . . . Plunges the reader into the world of Duke Ellington and the America of 1939.”—Brian Morton, author of The Penguin Guide to Jazz “Wonderfully convincing and authentic characterizations. . . . A thoroughly enjoyable read.”—Dan Morgenstern, author of Living with Jazz “We encounter not only Duke’s genius, but his character and humanity. This is one train you won’t want to get off!”—Dick Golden, radio host “When this marvelously evocative novel finds a home in the school curriculum, kids across America will be downloading Duke.”—Jack Bradley “Excellent command of voice, period, and ethnic dialect . . . clear love and in-depth knowledge of Ellington and his band.”—Alexandria LaFaye, author of The Keening Nine-year-old Danny stows away on Duke Ellington’s train one Georgia night. Through Danny’s eyes, we meet some of America’s finest musicians as he accompanies them on their 1939 European tour, when the train was briefly held in Germany. Says Nat Hentoff, “I knew Duke Ellington for twenty-five years. The Ellington in this book is the man I knew.” Mick Carlon is a twenty-seven-year veteran English/journalism high- and middle-school teacher. A lifelong jazz fan, he regularly plays jazz in his classroom and has turned hundreds of students into jazz fans. He says, “If young people are simply exposed to the music and stories of these American artists, they will make a friend for life.”

Umbrage Editions Horace’s Big Hat
Judy Palaferro
What did you want to be when you grew up? Colorful and fun, this charming book introduces children to a range of professions, each of which Horace tries his hand at in a special big hat—be it a red fireman’s helmet, giant baker’s hat, purple circus top hat, or an artist’s beret. Whimsical illustrations bring young readers into Horace’s world of imagination. Great for children who are learning to read. Judy Palaferro’s stylized illustrations have their roots in both her teenage admiration for rock and roll album covers and the 1980s New York art scene. Palaferro has worked as a print and web designer and as a book buyer in a Colorado toy store, where she began developing artistically with inspiration from Arthur Ransome, Roald Dahl, and teddy bears. Upon returning to New York, Palaferro’s fascination with illustration flourished for eight years while she worked as a children’s graphic artist and textile designer in the fashion industry. Horace’s Big Hat displays her beautiful sense of bright and pleasing aesthetics and her love for imagination and children’s art. Her first book, Color Bears, was published by Umbrage Editions in 2010.
Join Horace in the excitement (and fun) of trying on different identities— from turban to top hat!
