Fashion
“Fashion is like the ashes left behind the uniquely shaped flames of the fire, the trace alone revealing the fact that the fire actually took place.” Fashion, a general term for the most popular style or practice, particularly in clothing, footwear, accessories, apparels and lifestyle. It is not a collection of encaptured images, but rather an ensemble of socio-morphological forces connecting people catalyzing experimental, open-aided design. Fashion and its affinity for transformation is a complex terrain of architectural identities, scenery and performance. Popular kinds of furniture, homes, art, music, dance, literature and sports preferable in most sections of the society are also embedded in the idea of fashion, for example rock music and contemporary dance forms. Fashion design is believed to have started in 19 century with Charles Frederick Worth, being the first person to have his name sewn into the garments that he had created. “Change in fashion is the tax levied by the industry of the poor on the vanity of the rich.” Clothes are not always about fashion, in fact man started to wear clothes for warmth!!! That goes back to the time of cavemen. Later humans started to add fashion to clothes, and this became a trend. Soon no one was caught dead without clothes. Around 40-420 AD., Romans wore “Togas” or a cloth wrapped up around oneself made up of wool or linen, similar to Greeks. In the 1100s and 1200s, wool acclaimed popularity due to its warmth. Fashion in the 1600s became a lot freer and the Western look came into being. Fashion in then period 1795-1820 in Europe saw the final triumph of undress and informal style over brocades, lace and

periwig. In Britain, Beau Brumell introduced trousers, perfect tailoring and unadorned, immaculate linen as the ideals of men’s and women’s fashion. The 2000s are being described as “mash-up” decade, with trends following the fusion of fashions around the world with global and ethical clothing. For the most part, the decade didn’t have a popular style, but the recycled ones of 1930s-80s. Despite numerous and mixed fashion trends of 2000s, items of clothing like Ugg boots, hoodies, high-tops and skinny jeans were predominantly popular throughout the decade. Globalization has also added its influence. Furthermore, eco-friendly and ethical clothing like recycled fashions and fake fur were also common. With the fusion and globalization of fashion trends engulfing the Indian fashion insignia of saris, dhotis and other indigenous accessories, both the administrative and commercial capitals of India will soon be oblivious of the traditional Indian clothing styles. In such case, the question of other cities facing the same fate will only enhance the shame of our country for losing her agelong identity. “If the cut of the costume indicates intellect and talent, the color indicates temper and heart”. Fashion and textiles will continue to be one of the most important sectors of the Indian Economy. The career opportunities in Fashion Design and Technology are tangible and substantial. Pioneer institutes like National Institute Of Fashion Technology with more intake of students are all set to make Fashion Design and Technology a 50 million dollar+ industry in India. “Fashions are born and they die too quickly for anyone to learn to love them.” The versatile and non-perennial nature of fashion makes it all the more dynamic. Copyright laws need to be

strengthened so that the creativity of the ingenius designers gets really rewarded with honor. Only government programmes and steps can enable India to reach the pinnacle in Fashion Designing and Technology by exchanging the current ranks with Japan. The modern society needs to be highly sensitized about the content and quality of fashion in order to ensure that the ancient arts and heritages of India and the world still enjoy the past glory. All we have to do now is just count the seconds when the term “Fashionization” would enter the pages of dictionary with a broader concept of fusion of fashion, design, technology and the process of intermixing with various cultures in every nook and corner of the world.
