YMCA HELPS THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
Kayla Birt is a 15-year-old student at CASHS with a condition called Osteogenisis Imperfecta (OI). Her bones grow slowly and break easily. Kayla has had trouble finding activities that she can safely participate in. The CASD and YMCA have been able to work together to help Kayla by allowing her to swim as part of her alternative Physical Education class credit. Experts on Kayla’s condition strongly recommend swimming for people with OI. With the help of Physical Therapist Marsha Quesenberry and Personal Care Assistant Jennifer Decker, Kayla has been able to work on a program of swimming and aquatic exercises. At first, Kayla was hoping to be able to swim one lap without stopping. She has blown all of her original goals away with the encouragement and help from many people in the Y. Since October, Kayla has been able to swim a total of over a mile, and two laps without stopping is now part of her regular routine. If you see Kayla, tell her to keep up the good work.
