The VEMI presentation team is excited to take part in this year’s National Business Plan Competition. In order to to win first place as we did in the citywide competition, it will take a lot of hard work and preparation. Our team is already getting started on preparing. We are restructuring the Business Plan and changing the oral and visual presentations as well. Finishing in 2nd place the past 2 years, we are extremely motivated to finally win the National Championship. The team spends extra time after school to get prepared. We feel that this is the year that we will win the National Business Plan Competition for 2011.

Q: How did the two of you get started in the insurance industry? A: Luz E. Correa: “Well, I’ve spent most of my career in nonprofit work. Most of my time was spent working at a health plant. I was always interested in Public Relations so I submitted a resume to State Farm and two months later, I got the job.” A: Carolin L. Irvin: “Although State Farm usually hires from within, the company offered me a Claim Representative position and I never looked back since.” Q: What is State Farm’s main competition? A: Carolin L. Irvin: “In the field of auto insurance, our main competitor is Progressive. Geico, All State, and Nationwide are also large contenders.”

Q: Does State Farm sell business policies like General Liability and Errors and Omissions Insurance? A: Luz E. Correa: “We focus on small businesses, or what was formerly known as ‘Mom and Pop Shops’, so the short answer is yes.” Q: Are we missing anything in our product line? A: Luz E. Correa: “The VEMI product line is very diverse. It looks like you can cater to the needs of any business.” A: Carolin L. Irvin: “She’s right.” Q: What advice, if any, would you give to our firm? A: Luz E. Correa: “Focus on the most current trends and do research outside of your target demographics.” A: Carolin L. Irvin: “Try to stay in tune with legislative and regulatory policies and you’ll stay ahead of your competition.”

For February, our Celebrities of the Month are Carolin L. Irvin, the Zone Public Affairs Manager at State Farm and Luz E. Correa the Public Affairs Specialist of Metro New York at State Farm. They came into each department and offered advice to help us in future endeavors. They also asked each student what goals they planned to accomplish, once again offering advice and great help to each of the departments here at Virtual Enterprise Management and Insurance. We asked them a few questions to learn more about what they do and also to maintain a competitive advantage.
