Installing Fedora on a Virtual Machine
Tutorial: Installing Fedora 15 on a virtual machine in Windows In certain cases it may be preferable for a user to install the Fedora 15 operating system on their own virtual machine. If for example you are a windows user and would like to run your programs without having to do X forwarding through ssh, or if you are in a Sean Davis class where you are required to install your own Fedora virtual machine, then this is the tutorial for you. Step 1: To begin with download the CSIF Fedora virtual machine image here http://cable2.cs.ucdavis.edu/FedoraVM.rar and unrar it. You can then chose to install this image on either VirtualBox or VMware Player (I personally prefer VirtualBox since it is open source, but either will work fine and both are free). You can download either program from the following links:
o o

VirtualBox - https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads VMware Player - http://www.vmware.com/products/player/

Contents 1. 1 For VirtualBox installs: 2. 2 For VMware Player installs:

For VirtualBox installs: 1. Go through the setup **No need to add features, default included features will work fine

2. Complete VirtualBox install **Dont worry if these warnings pop up (of course we trust Oracle)

3. Once installed, create a new Virtual Machine by clicking new in the top left corner of the VirtualBox Manager

4. Select the OS you would like to run (in this case, fedora) and click next **Chose a descriptive name for the Virtual Machine, for example FedoraVM

5. Choose the amount of memory (RAM) you would like to allocate for this Virtual Machine

**WARNING: It is strongly advised that you only use half of your existing RAM or less for the virtual machine

6. Select use existing hard disk and browse the downloaded file from CSIF (inside the Fedora folder, Fedora.vmdk)

7. Now you will see your new Virtual Machine in your VirtualBox Manager window

8. First check the settings of the machine by selecting it on the left and then clicking on the settings button right next to start. You need to make sure of the following:

Enable PAE/NX for your processor (Under the System, Processor tab)

9. Once you have selected these settings, start the virtual machine, once Fedora has started, login as root, password ‘Pwl!ghsnts.’ 10. ***Important: Once you have logged in as root the first thing you need to do is create a new user since you cannot login graphically as root in Fedora. To do this simply enter the following commands: 1. adduser user_name 2. passwd user_name (you will then be prompted to enter your chosen password twice) 11. Once your new username and password have been entered, enter the command installFedoraVM. This will install all of the packages that are installed on the CSIF computers and reboot the system automatically once it’s done. However, this process will take a while, so go get yourself a cup of coffee, take a nap, go for a walk, and come back in about 4 hours. **Note: the virtualbox screen will go black after a while, dont worry though, this does not mean the installation has failed, you will notice a green dot appearing occasionally over the discs at the bottom, which means the installation is still running. For VMware Player installs: 1. Install VMware Player, once installed you should see a screen like this, select ‘Open a Virtual Machine’ and select the .vmx file in the Fedora folder that you downloaded earlier.

**WARNING: It is strongly advised that you only use half of your existing RAM or less for the virtual machine (the default is 1Gb, if you would like to change this simply click on Edit virtual machine settings) 2. Select ‘Play virtual machine’ 3. It is advisable you also download the VMware Tools when prompted as this will give you extra features (such as the ability to mount your usb drive inside the Fedora virtual machine)

4. Once the VMware Tools have finished installing, and Fedora has started, login as root, password ‘Pwl!ghsnts.’ 5. ***Important: Once you have logged in as root the first thing you need to do is create a new user since you cannot login graphically as root in Fedora. To do this simply enter the following commands: 1. adduser user_name 2. passwd user_name (you will then be prompted to enter your chosen password twice) 6.
