The telecommunication market is one of the fields whose advancement has no bounds. This time when we embarked into the university schedule after vacation span, ICT could be seen equipped with several latest stuff, in order to keep students abreast with the modern technologies. Yes pals, our dept is getting sophisticated, a lucky news for all the ICT techie freaks by paying our kindest regards to the Director, Dr. BS Chowdhry, Institute of Information and Communication Technologies(IICT) and Dr, Aftab A. Memon, Chairman of Institute of Communication technologies (ICT). Unfortunately our senior fellows were kept deprived of all these latest entities which we are bestowed with eventually. After taking a broad search view of ICT, I ended up penning down the following list of art equipments. Along with the WLan switches’ installation as a measure of staying connected, the equipments like Satellite Receiver Trainer, Spectrum AnalyzSTATE OF ART EQUIPMENTS AT ICT, MUET All Pakistan Tour

ers, RADAR/ TV / VCR / DVD trainers have arrived to the Radio communication Lab. Moreover, TV Antenna system trainer and other microwave equipments (in both assembled as well as discrete form) are the fresh digital bodies, which are imparting practical information to students in the subject of microwave comm. under the supervision of Sir Mohsin Ali. In addition to these, Cellular Comm. Lab (i.e. supervised by Sir Naveed Umrani) is digitized with the equipments as Cellular Telephone Service Trainer and GSM Evaluation Unit, which will provide aid to students having the subject RF & MN. The Cellular Comm. lab is also introduced with centralized antenna unit that is going to give the first hand knowledge in satellite comm. subject along with satellite receiver trainers. System for environmental & meteorological monitoring is another latest entity of this lab. It is

characterized to monitor the weather conditions i.e. telemetry system. But the real backhand story up is the mounting of antenna onto the roof of ICT, that some of the good peepers out of you would have noticed. Well, these are the mainstream monitors of these equipments. One Antenna that is parabolic in shape is catching the TV signals from satellite and providing a few channels onto the TV trainers, enabling the student to configure them at the test points so as to get a vivid distinct picture. The other antenna used is subjected to remote sensing. Hope this mini article enlightens you with shorthand knowledge on our technical-full institute & this is really not it. There’s more latent stuff in our institute for us to grab the avail out of them and lot more is yet to come. So guys, why not go n take our step towards learning them?

SUPARCO: Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission

SUPARCO (Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission) is the national space agency of Pakistan. SUPARCO is mandated to conduct R&D in space science, space technology, and their peaceful applications in the country. Its core realm of research includes design of Communication and remote sensing Satellite and other space vehicles. It has its branches and offices in different major cities of Pakistan like Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Multan and Peshawar.

usual method of advertisement in the national newspaper. But keep one thing in mind that majority of SPD organizations, including SUPARCO; don’t reveal their name in the advertisement. You can recognize SUPARCO by the web address given. The induction system is online and you apply directly through website of SUPARCO Online Induction.

http://www.induction8402.com.pk/
Keep this link in your list, all the vacancies are updated here, in this web. Second method is by visiting educational institutions and conducting test and interview there. You are directly appointed at the post Assistant Manager (SPS 8 which is equivalent to BPS -17). Induction is also made through Internee Scheme as well. Merit list of the candidates is prepared through a software which considers the weightage marks on the following criteria:

Induction or Recruitment System of SUPARCO
As SUPARCO is a research organization it is suitable for all those who want to make their career oriented towards research. It is an equal opportunity employer. The bulk of the manpower at SUPARCO is related to Science and Engineering fields including Electronics, telecommunication, mechanical, chemical and aero space engineering. For Induction or recruitment SUPARCO follows different methods, one is the

Career in SUPARCO
Salary Package and Chances of Promotion
Initial Salary package is very attractive; you will be paid around 30K initially. But the growth is rather slow compared to industrial sector of Pakistan. A fix annual increment plus the budget announced increment (usually 15% or 20% of basic salary) are the increments you receive during a year. Medical and transport facility is available plus residence (Officer Mess) is also offered. After five years you become eligible to promote to the post of Manager (SPS 9 which is equivalent to BPS -18).

Sponsorship for higher studies MS/PhD and trainings
SUPARCO encourages and funds its officers to pursue higher education in different prestigious universities of the world. After completion of studies you will have to serve SUPARCO for a period of around 5 years. You will also be exposed to different in home national and foreign trainings.

Job environment
Job environment is friendly; SUPARCO mostly inducts top students so here you can have the privilege to work with intelligent and professional minds.

Guideline for the test and Interview
SUPARCO test and interview is purely technical i.e. no IQ Questions asked. For electronics students study of books like Control Engineering by Norman S.Nice, Electronic Devices and Circuit by Robert T Paynter, Communication Electronics by Frenzel and any good book of digital Electronics is worth mentioning. In interview, questions are mostly asked from your senior year thesis/project and the field related to this.

Concluding Notes
I again emphasis that those who like to remain associated with research and academics must come forward to make it as career. Slow growth is the major concern but still it’s not that bad compared to other government organizations. I wish

“A L L - PA K I S TA N T O U R : T h e j o u r n e y o f a l i f e t i m e ”
By Mr. Jawad Saeed Abro 06TL48
as anyone ever tried to look for the answer to this question: “What if there were no vacations after the exams?’’ Well, I thought about it & found a very suitable resemblance to it & that’s “It would have been like being put into a vicious battle one after the other”. The reason for me initiating this talk is to emphasize the need of vacations after term exams so that the students can flush out all the RATTAS from their mind (don’t know about everyone; but at least, I do so) & relax their minds after the hectic worries of the exams in these holidays. But still then, your worries are far from over because you need to decide how to spend them? Well, if you are a final year student like me the window of available options is wide open. Some of you might consider having an internship or taking any course related to your field of study. The other one is to put all of these things aside & go on the “ALL-PAK TOUR” that’s arranged by the university for the students of final year. This year, many of my friends found the first option to be the best as they felt that they didn’t have enough time left for these fun-flavored activities & they were being serious about their future (My friends getting SERIOUS about their future??? What a joke!). But I, on the other hand, realized that it’s our last semester & probably the last six months of this wonderful period of time known as the “Student life”, so we should enjoy it to the full & try to seize as many cherishing moments as we can. That’s why I decided to go with the second option & was feeling very lucky to have the chance of exploring the natural beauty of Pakistan along with my friends that were with me during this journey of a lifetime. Many of our friends couldn’t be a part of this journey (even if they wanted to) because of the volatile situation of the country during those days and their parents didn’t permit them due to the security concerns. But, I got every support from my parents in this regard, who insisted me to go for this journey. I still remember how emotional it was for me when my father told me that he also had intended for the ALL-PAK tour during his final year of studies in Sindh Engineering College (now known as MUET), but didn’t have the money for it. So, he would have loved to see me doing what he couldn’t do.

H

The journey started on Sunday, 14th of June ’09 from the railway station Hyderabad. We had reached there before time, because we were very much excited as it was the first time for many of us that we were leaving for a longdistant trip. The total number of students on the trip was 16 (eight from each section) accompanied by the two teachers from our department that were Sir, Nasrullah Pirzada & Sir, Hyder Bux Mangrio. Our tickets were booked in the Shalimar Express that was scheduled to depart at 8:30 in the morning, but it came to us as no surprise that it departed four hours late. (This is quite normal with the trains here in our country!) The unrest of all of us was settled down as soon as we got seated in the train. Though, it was a routine June-hot day, but we didn’t feel that much uncomfortable as our seats were reserved in the lower AC section of the train. The spirits of all of us were sky-high as we’d realized that we were about to begin a journey that will be hard to forget for our complete life-time. Our unpleasing singing, poking fun at each other, playing Luddo & Antakshiri had let the other passengers on-board known that this gang of students must be heading for some fun-filled journey. Our first stay was in Lahore, where we reached at about 5:30 in the early morning. The teachers adjusted us in the rooms of the hotel where we’d to live during our stay here. Our curiosity to explore this land was reaching heights because there’s a famous saying & that’s “Jinnay Lahore nahin vekhiya, ou jammiya e nahin!” (One has not lived up his/her life completely if he/she hasn’t been to Lahore). We started our journey by paying a trip to the shrine of the famous saint Hazrat DAATA GANJ BAKSH (R.A) or the Daata Darbar. It was truly a soulful experience. Then, we headed towards the Shahi Qilla, an example of the marvel structures created in the reign of Mughal emperors. The excellent structure of the fort was speaking itself for the high-status living of this tribe. It consisted of many portions, the best of which was the Sheesh Mahal, which was entirely covered up with the precious stones, such as: Ruby, Diamond, and Emerald.

P a g e

5

A local guide told us that the UNESCO in collaboration with the Government of Punjab has taken it to be a national heritage & will spend some bundles of money to attract tourists from all-over the world. Nearby the fort was the Badshahi Mosque, one more remarkable structure under the name of Mughals. The mosque was very large & could accommodate many people to offer prayers simultaneously. The most interesting thing about it was that in a near-by a room, we saw the Qur'an Majeed, whose every word was written with the golden threads. This truly was eye-catching. From here, we went straight to the Minaar-e-Pakistan, the tower that traces its history back to the freedom movement of Pakistan. The garden surrounding it was very beautiful, dressed with some of the most beautiful flowers. We were just like “Wow! Is it just the beginning?” All of us were busy enjoying the natural treasures & trying to seize those wonderful moments in the frames of our cameras. Though, till this time, many of us were tired yet ready for visiting one more spot & it was the famous Pace Shopping Mall. It was truly an epic mall, having many of the luxurious goods that you would want to buy. When we were called upon by the teachers to reach the van, so that we may go out for dinning, it started raining all of a sudden. The showers were so heavy that we could do nothing except for getting wet. Then we had supper & left back for the hotel. The next day, we started our day by paying a visit to the Jinnah Park & the Jinnah Library. The sight of the park early morning was truly ecstatic. We found many people jogging to keep themselves healthy. The trip to the library was very nice. It consists of a double-storied building. The variety of available books, journals & magazines was truly large. After that, we had a chance to visit one of the finest engineering universities of Pakistan, i.e. UET, Lahore. It had a very well-built campus. To visit the university, our teachers had to get the permission from the Vice-chancellor. After having the permission, we were taken to the department of Electrical Engineering. Here, we got a chance to visit the Telecommunication Laboratory that comprised of all of the modern equipment from the field of telecommunication. There were many other labs as well that are not only used for the practical sessions of the under-grade & post-grade students, but also for the training of the professional engineers. If anyone has ever thought that this tour was for enjoyment only, then we proved them wrong; because we got a chance to learn many new things related to our field of study. That’s it had a touch of study tour as well. Getting back from UET, we were on our way to the Wagah Border (the official border line between India & Pakistan). A parade is arranged here twice a day, in which the flags of both the countries are raised up in the morning & taken off in the evening by their respective army men. This parade is no other than a festival. Those patriotic songs of Vital Signs & Junoon, being played over here, pumped everyone up with the patriotic spirit. Though, all of us were tired while returning back from here, but we were always ready to go one more place. So, the next place that we hit was the famous Food Street of Lahore. We’d always heard that the people of Punjab are glutton (or food lovers), but we observed it by ourselves from the menu cards of the Dhaabas & watching people eat very heavily in the food street. The specialty of the food street is the famous Katta Katt (i.e. the meat minced on the Tawwa) & the Chargha. This brought an end to a wonderful day of our journey & possibly to our stay in Lahore as well, because we were to leave this heart pounding city the other day. Though, we were happy that we were to explore some other city, but were still feeling sad to be leaving Lahore. So, we decided not to sleep that night & were wakeful, playing Luddo and having Vella Kachehri all night long. The next day, 17th of June, we left for Murree. As we hadn’t slept the last night, so we traveled our way to Murree while having a nice sleep. The motor-way was very nicely built up. As soon as we were drawing nearer to our destination in the early hours of evening, we uncovered the lenses of our cameras & started to capture those lovely sceneries. Murree is quite above from the sea level, so as we were getting up, the beauty of the nature was getting unveiled in front of us. While many of us were enjoying those lush sceneries & the cold weather, some of our friends were getting scared to death because they seemed to have this height-phobia. We couldn’t help teasing them for that. After traveling for about eight hours, we didn’t know that a drill awaited us. This drill was that we had to climb the mountainous roads with those heavy bags on our shoulders to the hotel. Because the van couldn’t go there. Our stay was in a hotel near the Mall Road, which is very much known as the “Shoppers’ Stop” & remains open all night long.

P a g e

6

We started our visit of Murree from Patriata, which’s very much famous for its chair-lift. Many of you might have seen those on TV in any voyage program. The ride on the chair-lift was very thrilling, yet the sight was very beautiful because we could see all of those beautiful mountains covered with snow. If this excitement wasn’t enough, we headed towards Bhurbhan, also known as the heavenly land of Pakistan. Here, we got a chance to visit the famous Pearl Continental Hotel, PC for short, whose chain of five-star hotels is spread all over the country. It has many conference rooms, a mini cinema hall, a mini shopping mall, a very fine swimming pool, a helipad and what not? You just had to order anything & I guess, it would have been with you. You’ll feel as if you’d a Genie, but the only difference is that the Genie would not be asking for those hundreds of thousand bugs that you will have to pay to the hotel management for these privileges. But on top of everything was the view of the beautiful mountains & clouds from the open air theatre & the helipad, which something that words can’t define. We got back an hour before the scheduled time because of the bad weather being suggested by the dark clouds; as it’s not wise enough to be out of your hotel room in those areas after the sunset, except for a few places like the Mall road. On our way back, I got to experience the first snowfall of my life. Though, I could have caught fever, yet I didn’t want to miss this chance of enjoying the snowfall. The next day, was seemingly off from the distant visits; because it was Friday & the teachers asked us to visit the Pindi Point & the Kashmir Point nearby the Mall road after offering the Friday prayers. As it was an open choice, so some of the students went to explore these places & the others didn’t, who spent their day while shopping the warm woolen sweaters & shawls for their family & friends from the mall road. All of us did the most of our shopping from Murree as we’d the mall road nearby our residence. The next morning, we had been to Ayubia & Nathia Galli, two of the most enchanted spots here in Murree. There was also a chair-lift in Ayubia, so for some of us who didn’t experience it in Patriata, it was a golden chance to experience the thrills of the chair-lift. As it was weekend, the Nathia Galli was filled up with the masses that had reached out here to enjoy & get refreshed after the week long stress of their jobs & other works. On our way back to hotel, after an other day filled with enjoyment & the spirit of exploration of new places, when we got to know that it was our last night stay here in this exotic city of Murree, we got a bit sad. Well, it still didn’t let our spirits down & we spent our last night here by wandering from here & there on the Mall road.

Then, we were ready to hit the capital city of Pakistan, that’s Islamabad, also reckoned as the most beautiful city of the country. On our way to Islamabad, we also visited the Raawal Park located near the famous Raawal Dam of Rawalpindi. The park was very beautiful, having some beautiful birds in its outskirts. As the park was covered over large geography, so the golf cars were quite common which were being utilized by the people to visit the garden. What I found most attractive about this garden was the track that was being built for the car racing. When we reached Islamabad, we were accommodated in a very nice rest house in the F-sector of Islamabad. It was the best residence that we have got thus far during our journey, because the rooms were widely equipped with all of the facilities that we had wanted. Though, the drive was of about three & a half hours, we’d still got tired. So, the teachers asked us to get fresh, have our meal and get ready after that because we were supposed to offer the ASR prayers that day in the Faisal Mosque, which was not that far from the guest house. I’d always seen it on TV, but had never imagined that it would be that beautiful for real as well. The structure was speaking for itself the hard work, the dedication that the labors must have put in to raise this wonderful religious structure. Many of the students were getting anxious to get back as soon as possible, not because they didn’t have any interest in this place, but just because of the fact that these fanatics of the game of cricket didn’t want to miss even a single ball of the final of the grandest event of the game, their country had reached. (Remember, in those days of June one more thing was spreading like craze & that was the ICC T-20 Cricket World Cup). I just can’t find words to explain how much fun it was to be watching those matches along with the friends in the hotel, cheering for each six from Shahid Afridi & booing every fall of Pakistani wicket. It was Pakistan against Sri Lanka in the finals! Every Pakistani had waited for this moment for so long. How could anyone even think about missing it? Now, there was some lack of unanimity amongst us, as some of the students wanted to visit the famous Itwaar bazaar (the weekly bazar) near the famous Aabpara Chowk. So, those who wanted to see the match were dropped at their rooms & the rest of us went to the market. It doesn’t mean that we, those went out, were not cricket lovers.

ALL PAKISTAN TOUR:

“NOT ONLY ENJOYMENT, BUT ALSO A TOUCH OF STUDY TOUR”

P a g e

7

We were holding our cell phones tight & were being updated about every ball from our friends & the trustful resource of mobile internet. While having supper in the blue area (one of the hi-fi areas of Islamabad), we got the good news that we, the Pakistanis, are the new champs of the world of cricket. Having heard that everyone in the restaurant went crazy and there were fireworks outside & people were moving with the beat of the drums. It was a joy no less than a festivity. We also showed some of our skills in the dancing & had some bhangra with the locals that were being covered by the media. The celebrations continued all night long. The weather remained a bit hot in Islamabad during our stay, so we used to get out for traveling new spots in the early hours of the evening. The next place that we visited was the Shakarparian, the famous picnic spot of the capital city. As the sun was still shining hot, we did not see many people here. So we left this place a bit early. Then, it was the turn of Daman-e-Koh, a mountainous area. The most attractive thing about this place was that you can see the top view of the complete city. The major buildings of the city were quite evident from there, such as the president house & the parliament. The next day, we headed to Rawalpindi, which doesn’t have any of its own significance apart from the Islamabad because both of these are known as the twin cities. We started our exploration of this city by paying a visit to the Liaquat Park. This is the same park where the two Prime Ministers of this country (Liaquat Ali Khan & Muhtarma Benazir Bhutto) were martyred. The place where our very own leader, BB, was martyred has now is a souvenir in her name, with a gallery of her photos & paintings nearby. Next up, we visited the most famous shopping extravaganza in the Raja Bazar. The goods were very much less expensive here than they were in Murree & Islamabad. But, as most of us had done our shopping from there already, so we hardly were left with any bugs to do more shopping from here. Yet some of us managed to get themselves some goods. We’d already got our tickets booked whilst leaving for Murree, so whenever we were going to some place, we’d it in the back of our minds that we have to leave on 24th of June. Sadly, the next day was this 24th when this journey full of enjoyment, fun, cherish, free from worries of any sort, was about to end. We’d been asking our teachers from the last couple of days for a reward to be “obedient” & “nice” to them, throughout the journey. (We really deserved it, because that obedience & congeniality are the last things that you can expect from the guys of our gang!) We decided this reward to be a treat for a dinner. Though, the dining wasn’t that important, we just wanted to have a memorable gathering in which all of us should sit on around a single table & recall all of those wonderful memories that we’d created during the last 8 or 9 days. After very much tiring efforts from our side, they agreed & all 18 of us had dinner together. We were strictly ordered by Sir Nasrullah that we should get ready at about 6 in the morning the next day, so he asked us to pack our bags as soon as we get

back to our rooms & get to bed early. But, we didn’t want to waste those last few hours on the trip sleeping. So, we exactly followed his first commandment of packing the bags but didn’t follow the second. Instead, we got ourselves some party material (cakes, sandwiches & soft drinks) and started partying in one of the rooms where most of us had gathered. What then? We forgot all the rules, showing our poor dancing skills & moving ourselves onto the rhythm of the loud songs being played on TV. We’d forgotten everything; all we remembered was that after this trip, our life will never be the same again. Where else would we get a chance to spend such golden days of our life again? None of us slept that night & enjoyed themselves to the full. The last day, we left for Lahore from where we were to reach back our destinations. Though I’d realized that it wasn’t me alone whose mood was off, yet all of us were lying to each other by acting like there’s nothing to be sad about. We didn’t let our spirits down & kept that fun element alive amongst us through out the journey to Lahore. We reached there by 12:30 in the noon, had our meal there & reached at the station about 2 in the noon. Karakoram Express, the train in which we were to leave, was to depart from the Lahore station at about 3:30, which it did. As soon as the train arrived, we started feeling all of the exhaustion & tiredness that this journey had brought to us. So frankly, the journey back home wasn’t interesting at all, as we were being impatient to get back to our homes because this stress was tearing us apart & we were just asking ourselves that will there not be any more new spots to visit each day with the friends? Will there not be any more nights during which we remain awake just to have useless talks with the friends? Will there not be any more of those little clashes on silly things like it’s my turn to bath first or how dare you touch my diary? And many heart-touching experiences like that! This journey ended for me as soon as I reached rohri junction at about half-past 3 in the night & left for my home from there. The rest of the crew landed -off on the Hyderabad station the next day at 9 in the morning. Well, life has to move on & time waits for none. Good times seem to fly-off fast and this makes us sad. But, instead of being sad over the fact that those golden moments are passed, we should raise our cheeks with happiness that we have just treasured some of the most precious moments that will be soothing during the times of worries and will bring smile to us when we will be torn apart by the restless days & nights of the coming tensions of the practical life. I would like to thank the teachers for their support & guidance during this journey and all the friends for being a part of it. And for those that were not with me on this tour, I would just like to tell them that “Guys! You have missed an opportunity of a lifetime.”

Prof Dr. Aftab Ahmed Memon, Chairman, Telecommunication Engineering Department, was the chief coordinator of this training. He always gives opportunities to teachers and industry persons to train students for practical knowledge. Engr. Hyder Bux Mangrio, Lecturer, Telecommunication Engineering Department, was coordinator of this training. He was also instructor in this training. He has been teaching fiber optics communication system since last three years and he has also done training from Combit Telecom, Karachi. Engr. Raiz Ahmed Soomro, Lecturer, Telecommunication Engineering Department, and Engr. Manorma Rathi, Lab Lecturer, Telecommunication Engineering Department, were also the instructors of this course. Engr. Riaz Ahmed Soomro has been teaching fiber optics communication system since last two years. Students are always willing to make supervisor Engr. Hyder Bux Mangrio and Engr. Riaz Ahmed Soomro if they do final year project/thesis in fiber optics area. In Telecommunication Department they are known to be specialist of fiber optics area. Engr. Manorma Rathi has done training on fiber optics from Fiber Technologies Communications, Karachi. She has been teaching in Telecommunication Department since last year. She has become so much popular among students just in one year of teaching because of her academic skills and positive attitude. Its worth to say that, this training course would have incomplete without her. In her welcome address, Engr. Manorma Rathi said that this training will provide the necessary background to understand fiber optic communication systems and their individual components including fibers, cable construction, connectors, splicer, OTDR, optical sources and optical detectors. She described the basics of fiber optic communication systems. She also described the steps involved in fiber splicing. Engr. Hyder Bux Mangrio described the optical sources, optical detectors and losses in fiber optic cables and OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer). Engr. Riaz Ahmed Soomro described types of splicing. All the instructors had very good hands on experience on fiber splicing, sources, detectors and OTDR. They all delivered their both practical and theoretical knowledge in efficient way. The optical communication and photonics lab is well equipped with equipments which are essential for any fiber optic communication system. It has all the equipments necessary to train the students for becoming good transmission engineers. These equipments include optical source generators kits and optical receiver kits, power meters, fusion splicer, mechanical splicer, splice panels, cleaver, splicing tool box and OTDR. Optical source generators kits and optical receiver kits, power meters are used to measure connector losses, bending losses and length losses. Fusion splicer, mechanical splicer, splice panels, cleaver, splicing tool box are the tools used for splicing of fiber cables. OTDR is very much useful tool at field. It finds all the losses of fiber cable and tells at which distance those losses exist and only those areas are dug up for repairing. All the participants, including students and faculty members, got knowledge which is necessary for transmission engineer for design, installation, and troubleshooting of fiber optic communication systems. They got all practical techniques, which are necessary at field for designing, installation and troubleshooting of fiber optics communication systems. They got practical experience on each and every equipment. They learned mechanical and fusion splicing. They also learned to use optical sources, optical detectors, power meters and OTDR and all these equipments are used for troubleshooting of fiber optic communication systems.
