Hindu temples full with worshipers and mosques are deserted

By Dr. H. Koya
It is amazing to witness that
many Hindu temples in the Bay
Area are more frequently visited
by Hindu worshippers throughout weekdays and filled to the
capacity in the weekend prayers
and activities.
I have had the chance of visiting the Fremont Hindu Temple
after almost 20 years when it
was just a tiny place. Over the
years, along with the growing
number of believers, the
Fremont Hindu temple has
expanded by acquiring some of
the neighboring properties.
There is great deal of hustle and
bustle as worshippers come or
drive in and out of the complex
throughout the day and the
crowd builds up in the evening
as many working families visit
the temple after work. There are
no fixed times or scheduled at

Hindu temples like the Muslims
must follow five times a day and
are “commanded” to go the
mosques to worship Allah.
Its mind boggling that
Muslims who pride themselves
of being worshippers of One
God and taunt their Hindu counterparts for their modes of worship, pathetically fall short of
meeting their commitment to
visit and fill their mosques
throughout the day except tradi-

tionally on Fridays.
From what I have experienced Mosques (instead of
being an open place of worship
and unity) are plagued by internal politics, personal differences
and sectarian divides, prejudices
and hatreds that many times are
very visible and even expressed.

that respect. However, a few
years ago when I visited the
Lowry Mosque the chairperson
of a public event questioned my
presence and bid me not to take
pictures for fear of pilferage of
“information” to FBI.
The Hindu temples, however, have never questioned or
prohibited me except only once
at the temple where I was given
a guide who led me through worship areas which was cordoned
off for all visitors and I was guid- (
ed which pictures to be taken
and which not. But it was done
according to their protocol.
Mosques do not have any protocols. They are opened to all
regardless of faith, color or origin
– the hallmark of the unity and
open embrace to all. But
Muslims make it difficult both for
themselves and for others as

Fremont Symphony
Is symphony a dying art among the youngsters?

J

udging from the audience
comprised mostly of senior
citizens, we took the opportunity to ask if the art was as popular among the younger viewers
and participants. Many senior
viewers lamented that it was not
as sought after among today’s
youth as it used to be 40 or 50
years ago during their time. The
Fremont Symphony puts tireless
efforts into keeping the art alive
and enourage the art among the
younger viewers.

clinic of the 2015 ISAF
Youth
Sailing
World
Championship Emerging
Nations Program (ENP) set
to be held in Suva, Fiji from
24-30 April 24 – 30.
Representatives from
hosts Fiji, the Cook
Islands, Samoa, Papua
New Guinea, Vanuatu and
Guam will attend the seven
day clinic to be delivered at
the Royal Suva Yacht Club.
The Emerging Nations
Programme will create
opportunities and better
prepare young sailors as
they build up to the 2015
ISAF Youth Worlds set to
be held in Langkawi,
Malaysia from December
27, 2015 to January 3,
2016.
Through a seven day
intense program, which
culminates in a two day
regatta, the ENP sailors
and coaches will be working on development of
skills both on and off the
water. Alongside traditional
sailing skills and coaching
techniques, they will be

Children counselled in Fiji after
alleged bashings
Concerns over police brutality
in Fiji have sparked again, following reports that several children
witnessed an alleged beating.
Police confirm they are investigating the alleged incident in Viani, in
the Cakaudrove province on
Vanua Levu. The education ministry says 10 school children had to
be counselled after witnessing the
alleged assault on a father of
three, during a drug raid earlier this
year. The the ministry's divisional
counsellor for the north, Isikeli
Drevacu, says nothing can be
done about the memories, and the
children were clearly distressed.
"We listened to those who were
affected, especially for these children who were shocked at the
things that happened.

presence to further their
media skills and enhance

nation.
Two ISAF Nominated
Experts will be responsible
for the delivery of the
Oceania regional clinic with
theoretical and practical
aspects within the clinic.
Joining them will be representatives
from
the
Oceania Sailing Federation
(OSAF) including three
OSAF
Regional
Development Officers, two

of whom are graduates of
the
ISAF
Training
Scholarship Course. The
‘supported class’ of equipment for this clinic is the
Laser Radial.
The Youth Worlds ENP
clinic, hosted by ISAF
member the Fiji Yachting
Association (FYA), is the
first of five regional clinics
to be delivered in the buildup to the 2015 Youth
Worlds in Langkawi in
December.
Over
50
nations are expected to
benefit from attending the

regional clinics. One of the
key targets of this year’s
ENP is to have 80 nations
present at the 2015 ISAF
Youth Worlds (11 more
than in 2014) and the ENP
has been identified as key
to achieving this outcome.
ISAF will be providing
regular updates from the
clinic on all social media
platforms and using a dedicated #YouthSailing hashtag
on
Twitter
and
Instagram in order to promote ENP.

Fiji investigation underway into alleged police
beating of man in front of 'frightened' family

F

iji's police commissioner has launched
an official investigation into claims a man was
badly beaten by police in
front of his family in a drugrelated
case.
Sakiusa
Niulala
was
allegedly
bashed by police after they
found a small of amount of
marijuana at his home on
the northern island of Vanua
Levu. Residents at the
Naibalebale settlement in
Viani Bay reportedly also
witnessed last month's
assault. His wife Lanieta
Baleiwasawasa told Radio
Australia's Pacific Beat she
was angry and frightened at
the way police treated him.

"They handcuffed his hands
and punched him when they
saw a little bit of drugs," Ms
Baleiwasawasa said. "My
two children were having
their breakfast and they
were ready to go to school
when police came and
punched him. "It was very,
very serious. They punched
him and threw him into the
window ... my children were
crying all that day. They
won't go to school." Police
commissioner
Ben
Groenwald said it was a serious matter and an internal
investigation was underway.
"We only learnt about this
complaint
through
the
media," he said. "When I

read the news report I immediately sent my people up to
the north to investigate. "In
fact, [the Police Internal
Affairs Unit] are investigating
a few other cases and I
instructed them that they
must also include this." Mr
Groenwald said people with
concerns about the actions
of police must lodge an official complaint as soon as
possible to ensure medical
reports and forensic evidence are not lost. "If you file
a criminal case it will be a
criminal investigation, and
linked with the investigation
we always have an internal
disciplinary investigation,"
he said.

Fiji and Kolohe Kai to Take Over Guam Greyhound Park This Saturday
Popular reggae band
from Hawaii Kolohe Kai
and one of the biggest
Polynesian artists of our
time, the legendary Fiji.
Both talents performing
under one roof along with
other amazing artists? You

weekend with The Music

Kolohe Kai's lead singer
Roman De Peralta says
he's glad to be back in
Guam since the band's last
visit to the island four
years ago. He says he's
ready to perform the older
hit songs like Cool Down
and Ehu Girl, but he's also
stoked to see how Guam
reacts to their newer
songs. He says, "We got
some new songs here
playing in Guam, such as
Paradise and He'e Roa.

Most importantly, a medley
of the old hit songs and
putting that together read
for all the fans. I'm excited
to play the new stuff
because I went to Tahiti,
got some new songs there
and bring the Aloha from
Tahiti to Guam." Not a

stranger to the island
either, Fiji says his mission
is not only to entertain, but
as a pioneer of the Pacific
Island sound, he wants to
connect
with
fellow
islanders.
He says,
"Hopefully music can be
one of the tools we use to

unite one another and also
encourage speaking and
singing in your native language." Fiji says, "It's
always been a goal for me
to come to Guam and give
them a wonderful concert,
give them my all, and that's
what's going to happen this
weekend. I'm going to give
them a show they won't forget." De Peralta says,
"They're going to expect a
good energetic show for
sure." Catch Fiji, Kolohe
Kai, along with up and
coming artists Siaosi, Nakii
Moala, Kiwini Vaitai and
Drew Deezy this Saturday
at the Guam Greyhound
Park. Doors open at 4. Get
your tickets at any Shell
station, Jamaican Grill,

Youth Worlds Emerging
Nations Programme are:
- to help ‘Narrow the
performance gap’ between
nations attending the ISAF
Youth Worlds through the
provision of pre-event
training opportunities for
sailors and coaches;
– for ISAF to actively
engage with ISAF Member
National
Authorities
(MNAs), encouraging a
greater attendance of
nations at the ISAF Youth
Worlds;
– to enable ISAF

Member
National
Authorities (MNAs) access
to a ‘development pathway’
for young sailors and their
coaches, linking the YW
ENP to similar projects
being developed for the
2018
ISAF
World
Championships;
– to provide ISAF MNAs
with the opportunities to
benefit from further development support through
IOC Olympic Solidarity
funded programmes;
– to empower ISAF
MNAs to develop national
sail training programmes
which will enable independent,
un-subsidised
attendance at future Youth
Worlds events.
Upon completion of
each regional performance
clinic, attending nations will
be encouraged to apply for
up to two ISAF Youth
Worlds
‘ENP
Scholarships’. ISAF will
provide successful candidates with additional financial support for attendance
at the 2015 ISAF Youth
Worlds, including travel
costs, entry fees and
equipment charter.

Boyfriend of young public servant found dead in the boot of her car charged with murder
… as it's revealed she recently found out about his secret double life in Fiji
Police have confirmed
the body of a woman found
in the boot of her car is that
of 35-year-old missing public
servant Daniela D'Addario. A
27-year-old man, believed to
be her boyfriend, has been
charged with her murder
after fleeing from officers
when they stopped the car
and made the grim discovery on Wednesday night, in
Bermagui, on the NSW
south coast. Ms D'Addario, a
former teacher at Canberra
High School, had been in a
‘very tumultuous relationship’ with Josaia 'Joey'
Vosikata, 27, for about four
months friends say. She
found out a month ago that
he had a secret wife and
children back home in Fiji
after he moved into her
apartment in Canberra.
Ms D'Addario and Mr
Vosikata were reported
missing by her concerned

family members in the ACT
on Monday. Ms D’Addario’s
friend Chris Reid told the
Daily Telegraph: ‘When she
found out he had a wife and
kids in Fiji she left him but
then, unbeknown to us the
reasons, she got back
together with him.' Mr Reid
told the Canberra Times Ms
D'Addario was as 'a beautiful girl'.
'She's funny, she's witty,
she's always the life of the
party. She's gorgeous - with
beautiful big eyes. Always
generous and caring and a
big animal lover,' he said. A
27-year-old man was arrested in the Bermagui area at
about 4.30pm on Thursday
after fleeing into bushland at
around
8.30pm
on
Wednesday. He was taken
to Batemans Bay police station and has since been
extradited to the ACT. An

Indigenous people of Fiji are firmly
in control of their destiny-Bai
A Fijian government
delegation has said in a
UN meeting that the
indigenous people of Fiji
are firmly in control of
their destiny. The 14th
session of United Nations
Permanent Forum on
Indigenous Issues is currently underway at the
UN Headquarters in New
York.
Permanent Mission’s
First Secretary, Gene Bai,
advised the Forum that
Fiji’s 2013 Constitution is
consistent with the United
Nations Declaration on
the Rights of Indigenous

People.
He spoke about the
relevant provisions in the
Constitution of Fiji that
specifically protect the
rights of the i-Taukei.
The Forum heard that
the i-Taukei enjoy full
rights to land, culture,
institutions and religion,
with all these rights firmly
protected within the constitution and the nation’s
written laws and regulations.
In no way, the Fijian
Delegation
affirmed,
should these rights of the
i-Taukei be perceived to

be under threat.
Bai said the constitution affirms that the ownership of all i-Taukei land
shall remain with the customary owners and that iTaukei land can never be
alienated by sale or
transfer. He explained
that for the first time, the
constitution’s
Bill
of
Rights sets out the right
to a fair share of royalties
for the landowners of any
minerals found under
their land or under the
seabed in which they
have customary fishing
rights.

Fiji aim to maximise Kiwi link
SUVA, Fiji . Fiji has long
enjoyed a connection with
New Zealand football, and that
link is set to be indelibly
strengthened next month
when the Melanesians make
their historic bow at the FIFA
U-20 World Cup.
Fiji’s appearance at New
Zealand 2015 will mark the
first time a side from the country has featured at a FIFA tournament. While Tahiti have
been stealing some of the
region’s limelight in recent
years, Fiji boast a lengthy and
proud football tradition which,
in FIFA World Cup™ terms,
pre-dates all other Pacific
islands nations. Indeed their
1981 debut was appropriately
enough against New Zealand an iconic All Whites’ side en
route to creating their own
slice of history by qualifying for
Spain 1982.
Now in the modern era,
Fiji’s football pin-up Roy
Krishna has helped put his
nation on the map with a

goalscoring performance at
the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup
for Auckland City and, more
recently, in the colours of
Wellington Phoenix – New
Zealand’s only professional
club. In the space of a single
season Krishna has gone from
being a bit-player to an integral
member of the Phoenix forward line with the club currently honing in on their best-ever
A-League performance.
Few Pacific-born players
have reached professional
ranks, adding further credence
to Krishna’s achievements.
Only retired star Esala Masi,
who won Australia’s former
National Soccer League,
stands out as an equal. And
Krishna is hoping that his stardust rubs off on his young
compatriots when they take
the field at New Zealand 2015
in a colourful group containing
Germany, Honduras and
Uzbekistan.
“It is a special moment for
not only Fiji, but also for

Oceania,” Krishna says about
New Zealand 2015.
“I hope the team do well
and make Fiji and Oceania
proud. Hopefully fans come
out and support the team, and
the young players show their
ability. We have some good
young up-and-coming players
and, if they do well, hopefully it
can open the door for more
players to get a professional
contract. I think there is big
potential for players across
Oceania, and I hope more can
play in the A-League.”
Fiji are undertaking signifi-

cant preparation for New
Zealand 2015. They have
spent the past few months in
Suva at the national training
centre, and will soon head to
Sydney for several international matches, before arriving
early in Christchurch ahead of
their opener against Germany.
The fact they have qualified
for a FIFA tournament on their
own doorstep adds yet another layer of excitement.
Unusually for an Oceania
team, the travel is minimal,
there will be no time difference, and Fiji can also expect

to earn support from the New
Zealand-based Fijian community which is said to number
around 60,000. Adding to that
support will be New ZealandFiji Football, a body established to promote and encourage football within New
Zealand’s Fijian community.
One such local Fijian is
Mohammed Khan, who is set
to feature at the heart of the
Melanesian side’s backline
when they take to the field in
Christchurch. Originally from
Suva, Khan, whose family
boasts strong footballing pedigree, has spent the past few
years plying his trade for
Auckland
powerhouse
Waitakere United.
Indeed Khan’s arrival at the
west Aucklanders briefly overlapped with that of Krishna’s
just prior to the latter’s departure to Auckland City and a
prominent role at the Club
World Cup. The Wellington
Phoenix star is certainly an
inspiration to many of his

younger countrymen.
“I have talked to some of
my friends who say they want
to be like him, and also play at
the top level,” Kahn says.
“He is definitely a role
model. I look up to him and he
is one of my Fijian idols. But he
is actually someone that every
Indian-Fijian looks up to.
That's down to his playing
level, his skill and also the fact
he is such a nice guy off the
field, always willing to offer
advice.” A cultured ball-playing
central defender, who studies
mechanical engineering in
Auckland, Kahn says New
Zealand 2015 will be unique in
many ways. “It will be a special
atmosphere,” he said. “I will
have a lot of my family coming
from overseas just to watch
me play, and make them
proud. My dad, my uncle, my
dad’s dad all played at the top
level in New Zealand and
overseas, so I’m very excited.
It will be nerve-wracking, but
good.”

'The

Ramdev’s

Trust on Sunday sought
to clarify the controversy over ‘Putrajeevak Beej’
medicine manufactured by the
yoga guru-owned Divya
Pharmacy, saying that the drug
was meant for dealing with the
problem of infertility in women
and termed as “false and misleading” the notion that it promises a male child. The trust in a
statement said, “The idea that

the medicine helps
determine the sex of a
child is false and misleading since it is consumed by women and
as per science, male
chromosomes determine the sex of a child.”
The trust argued that the packaging of the medicine does not

the drug ensures birth of a

and other related problems in
women,” the trust said in the

Later on Sunday evening, the

The confusion deepened
when
Prime

one-month salary “for assistance to those affected by the
recent earthquake”.
The Prime Minister’s decision spurred hundreds of
Indians to follow suit, including Members of Parliament
who too donated a month’s
salary to the fund. Shiv Sena
leader Aditya Thackeray
tweeted, “All Shiv Sena MPs
will give their 1 month's salary

however, the PMNRF money
can only be used for the earthquake victims in India, where

Arshdeep Kaur had died after
being allegedly pushed out of a private bus, belonging to ruling family

of Punjab, late on Wednesday,
while resisting an alleged molestation bid. The body was lying in the
mortuary located at nearby village
Singhawala since the incident took
place on Moga-Kotkapura road. In
the incident, her mother too had
sustained multiple injuries as she
was also pushed out of the moving
bus. Sensing the gravity of the situation, Moga police had hurriedly
seized the bus in question and
arrested all four involved in the
crime, including the bus driver,
conductor and helper.
They were all booked under
various sections of the IPC including murder (302 of the IPC) and SC
ST (atrocities) Act. Besides,
Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal on
Saturday also ordered all Orbit
buses to go off roads till the staff

NIA looking for Afghan national
in ISIS case of Mumbai youths
An Afghan businessman is
believed to be allegedly
indoctrinating youth from
Maharashtra to join dreaded
ISIS,
claims
National
Investigation Agency (NIA)
which has sent its first judicial
requests in the case to
Afghanistan seeking details of
the person.
The Afghan national,
whose name has been withheld, was running business of
dry fruits in India and allegedly approached the four youths
from Kalyan area neighbouring Mumbai and brainwashed
them to join ranks of ISIS terror group, official sources
said. The man had mysteriously disappeared after NIA
arrested Areeb Majeed when
he was deported from Turkey
to India last November. The
port of exit of the Afghan
national was found out to be

from Delhi in December last
year, the sources said. They
said Letters Rogatory, sent to
Afghanistan,
has
been
cleared by the Home Ministry
and will be issued by the competent court this week.
The NIA request to the
Afghan government includes
verification of his address, his
complete bank account
details, associates in that
country and the Gulf and call
data records, they said.
Majeed was arrested by
NIA upon his return from Iraq
and booked under sections
16, 18 and 20 of the Unlawful
Activities Prevention Act and
Section 125 of the Indian
Penal Code. The three UAPA
sections stand for commission or conspiring to commit a
terrorist act and for being a
member of a terrorist organisation, while Section 125 of

the IPC relates to waging war
against a nation which is in
alliance with the government.
Majeed landed in Mumbai on
November 28 after spending
nearly six months in Iraq, following which he was immediately detained by the security
agencies and later arrested.
Last May, four youths from
Kalyan, including Majeed, had
left the country to visit holy
places in West Asia but disappeared thereafter. They were
suspected to have joined
ISIS. According to police, the
four engineering students had
flown to Baghdad on May 23
as part of a group of 22 pilgrims to visit religious shrines
in Iraq. The US has already
given preliminary evidence of
the Internet Protocol address
used by Majeed before
allegedly joining the outfit and
the mails shot off by him.

Kashmiri Pandits stage protest over issue of return to Valley

ashmiri Pandits on

return to the Valley.
Members of the community, who converged in large
numbers at Jantar Mantar,
demanded that Jammu and
Kashmir
government
reopen prosecution cases
against all those involved in
the killing of Kashmiri
Pandits in the Valley following the outbreak of militancy.
Many of the protesters
shouted slogans against

Hurriyat Conference and
separatist leaders. The general secretary of Jammu
Kashmir Vichar Manch,
Manoj
Bhan,
said:
“Whatever decision the
Centre or the State government takes, they must talk to
the Kashmiri Pandits first.
No separatist should be
allowed to intervene in matters relating to Kashmiri
Pandits.”
Disapproving of comments made earlier by Chief
Minister Mufti Mohammad
Sayeed that only 10 to 15
per cent Kashmiri Pandits
will choose to return to the
Valley as most are well

placed in various parts of
the country, Mr. Bhan said
that every member of the
community wants to return
to their homeland.
CBFC board member
Ashoke Pandit, who had
flown in from Mumbai to participate in the protest, said

that the Centre believing the
words of Mr. Sayeed was
the biggest problem for
Kashmiri Pandits.
“When I see all the terrorists on the streets of
Kashmir, then what is the
difference between the previous and this Central
Government. The biggest
problem is that the central
government is trusting the
Chief Minister....who says
he is thankful to Pakistan
after the peaceful elections,”
Mr. Pandit said.
He also demanded that
Syed Ali Shah Geelani,
Yasin Malik and other separatist leaders be arrested.

Indian media faces flak in quake-hit Nepal, 'insensitivity' complaints
Just days after India
earned widespread praise
for mounting the largest
relief mission in earthquake-hit Nepal, the Indian
media faced brickbats from
the Nepalese on Sunday
for its coverage of the disaster and its aftermath.
By Sunday afternoon,
#GoH#GoHomeIndianMed
iaomeIndianMedia was the
top trending hashtag in
Nepal, with more than
56,000 tweets on the topic.
People in Nepal took to
social media in droves to
complain about what they
described as the Indian
media’s
“insensitive”
reportage on the April 25
temblor that killed more
than 7,000, devastated
infrastructure across the
country and left tens of
thousands displaced.
The development coin-

cided with the observance
of the World Press
Freedom Day. Many contended the Indian media
was treating its coverage
of the quake and its victims
as a public relations exercise on behalf of the government in Delhi.
Indian newspapers and
TV channels have provided wall-to-wall coverage of
the worst earthquake to hit
Nepal in more than 80
years and scores of Indian
journalists have fanned out
across the country in a
race to unearth the next
big story.
But the criticism on
social media will not be
music to the ears of Indian
media personnel now in
Nepal. "Some Nepalis, not
all, feel Indian media is a
bit patronising in their attitude and that is perhaps

why such sentiments are
being expressed. That is
how a section of Nepali
media also feels," said
Kunda Dixit, a veteran
journalist and editor of
Nepali Times. There is a
feeling among Nepalese
that the Indian media is
only highlighting the plight
of Indians in Nepal and
rescue efforts by teams
from the Indian military
and the National Disaster
Response Force (NDRF).
Twitterati accused the
Indian media of being
insensitive to survivors,
asking them irrelevant
questions such as "How
are you feeling?" and not
helping those needing
immediate medical aid.
Many tweets reminded the
Indian media that Nepal is
a sovereign country and
not a “satellite state”.

UN assures India of taking up Lakhvi release issue

A United Nations Security
Council (UNSC) committee
has assured India that it will
take up the issue of Mumbai
terror attack mastermind
Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi at its
next meeting, after India
expressed concern that the
LeT commander’s release
from a Pakistani jail violates
the provisions of the global
body.
India’s Ambassador to the
U.N. Asoke Mukerji had written a letter to the Chair of the
UNSC al-Qaeda Sanctions
Committee Ambassador Jim
McLay expressing concern
over Lakhvi’s release and
said it violates the provisions
of the committee concerning
al-Qaeda and associated
individuals and entities.

money since all his assets
and financial resources have
to be frozen. Any bail money
posted for Lakhvi is also a
violation of the provisions of
the sanctions committee

since he is listed terrorist.
Acknowledging India’s
concerns, Mr. McLay has
responded to India’s letter
and assured that the matter
will be discussed at the next
meeting of the committee,
sources here told PTI. The
next meeting of the committee is expected to take place
in the next few days.
The committee had listed
in December 2008 Lakhvi as
a terrorist associated with
LeT and al-Qaeda for “participating in the financing, planning, facilitating, preparing or
perpetrating of acts of activities by, in conjunction with,
under the name of, on behalf
or in support of” both entities.
As a listed terrorist,
Lakhvi is subject to assets
freeze, travel ban and an
arms embargo.
The committee said that
as chief of operations and
military commander of LeT,
Lakhvi has directed its operations, including in Iraq and
South-East Asia. The release

of Lakhvi had also raised
concerns in the U.S., U.K.,
Russia,
France
and
Germany with Washington
calling for him to be rearrested. Lakhvi and six others —
Abdul Wajid, Mazhar Iqbal,
Hamad Amin Sadiq, Shahid
Jameel Riaz, Jamil Ahmed
and Younis Anjum — have
been charged with planning
and executing the Mumbai
attack in November, 2008
that left 166 people dead.
Lakhvi, 55, a close relative of LeT founder and
Jamaat-ud Dawa (JuD) chief
Hafiz Saeed, was arrested in
December 2008 and was
indicted along with the six
others on November 25,
2009 in connection with the
26/11 attack case The trial
has been underway since
2009. A Pakistani court had
on April 9 set free Lakhvi, a
move which India said “eroded” the value of assurances
repeatedly conveyed to it by
Pakistan on cross-border terrorism.

Indian woman dead
after being shot at during
attempted robbery in US
An Indian-origin Gujarati
woman working at a gas station in
the US state of South Carolina was
shot in the face in an attempted
armed robbery and succumbed to
her injuries on Saturday.
Mradulaben Patel was the coowner of a store at a gas station in
Powdersville. An unidentified man
is believed to have shot Patel in the
face Thursday night. Police has
asked for help to identify the
assailant.
Officials of the Indian
Consulate in Atlanta have spoken
to her husband. Her family has not
sought any assistance from the
Indian mission, they added. Police
were quoted as saying that video
footage shows a man walking into
the store and buying a pack of
cigars. Authorities are reviewing
the surveillance footage that
showed the suspect, moments
before, asking for cigars and then

shooting Patel. A man named
Michael Wheat saw Patel lying on
the floor as he walked into the store
late at night and called the police,
Fox Carolina reported. "I saw her
lying there on the floor, bleeding
pretty bad," said Wheat, adding
that Patel had blood all over her
head and on the floor. Wheat said
he left the store and got in his truck
from where he called emergency
assistance number 911. He said he
ran back into the store without
knowing whether or not the shooter
had already left the scene of the
incident. "She was kinda moaning
as she was breathing," said Wheat.
Customers of the shop remembered Patel as a friendly woman.
"She always asked how everybody
was, their day was, (and) she
asked how my daughter was every
day that I came in here," Shalynn
Zarczynski, a frequent customer of
Patel's, said.

Mumbai cop guns down senior, J-K: Pak flags waved at rally addressed by Geelani
kills self inside police station
An assistant sub-inspector
(ASI) of Mumbai police shot
dead a senior inspector before
turning the gun on himself
after a heated argument inside
the police station, police officials said on Sunday.
While senior inspector
Vilas Joshi died late on
Saturday at Lilavati Hospital in
Bandra, ASI Dilip Shirke died
on the spot. A wireless operator, Balasaheb Aher, was
injured in the incident. The
police said the incident took
place at 8.30pm at the police
station at Vakola in suburban
Mumbai, when Joshi was
walking out of his cabin to go
home. Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria, who visited the police station, said,
“Shirke was absent on Friday.
He was assigned duty in the
night and when the night

inspector went to check on
him at 2.30am and later at
6.30am, Shirke was not there.
On Saturday, Shirke walked
into Joshi’s chamber and had
an argument with him, claiming he was on duty on Friday.”
Sources said during the argument, senior officers present
in the station allegedly used
abusive language, which
enraged Shirke. He fired at
least five rounds, of which
three hit Joshi’s back and
abdomen and one hit Aher’s
thigh, the police said.

Supporters of hardline
Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali
Geelani waved Pakistani
flags during a rally in the
volatile town of Tral in south
Kashmir on Friday, about a
fortnight after authorities
booked separatist leaders
for a similar occurrence at a
protest in Srinagar. Photos
of the rally in Tral, 45 km
from Srinagar, showed several persons, including
some who flanked Geelani,
waving Pakistani flags.
Geelani, 85, gave the slip
to the security establishment and addressed the
rally. The hardline leader
has remained mostly under
house arrest since his supporters waved Pakistani
flags and shouted proPakistan slogans at a rally in
Srinagar on April 15.
Geelani and his aide
Masarat Alam were booked
after that rally.

He is believed to have
left his residence at Hyder
Pora in Srinagar before sunrise to avoid security restrictions. A Pakistan flag was
also seen flattering inside
the Tral Jamia Masjid,
where Geelani addressed
supporters after Friday
prayers. Several supporters
also shouted pro-Pakistan
slogans.
Appealing to people to

strengthen the “freedom
struggle”, Geelani warned
against extending the duration of the Amarnath Yatra.
“The yatra should be either
for 15 days or up to a month.
It should not be beyond
that,” he said. He reiterated
his opposition to the setting
up of separate townships to
house Kashmiri Pandits displaced by the militant violence of the 1990s. “We

welcome Pandits to their
home and hearth but won’t
allow townships...We are
not opposed to any religion
but any ploy to change
demographics in Kashmir
will be foiled,” said Geelani.
He criticised chief minister
Mufti
Muhammad
Sayeed, saying: “Sayeed is
a powerless puppet. His
threads are pulled in New
Delhi. The statements like
turning Gulmarh into India’s
Davos only expose him.”
Geelani met the family of
Khalid Muzaffar, the brother
of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani, who
was killed in a controversial
army operation in Tral on
April 14. The youngster’s
death had triggered violent
protests in the area.
In the past, several
attempts by Geelani to visit
Tral were foiled by the state
government.

Indian American Student Excels at County Science and Engineering Fair
On Saturday, March 28,
2015, Devansh Vaid, an
Indian American student
just completing his junior
year at Deer Valley High
School (DVHS) in Antioch,
California, received a thirdplace award for a project he
and a classmate submitted
to the Contra Costa County
Science and Engineering
Fair (CCCSEF).
CCCSEF, in its eleventh
year, is an Intel-affiliated
event. Winners advance to
the Intel International
Science and Engineering
Fair. The prestigious competition, which is the largest
high
school
scientific
research event in the world,
brings together more than
1,500 students from about
70 countries and territories
to compete for college
scholarships, including one
for $75,000.
For their science project,
Devansh and his classmate
undertook a study entitled,
“Simple Calculus: The
Transformation
of
an
Oxymoron into a Reality.”
One of 262 projects
entered in the competition,
Devansh and his lab partner, who are both taking AP
Calculus AB this year, created a new Calculus notation for basic principles,
such as limits, derivatives,
and integrals, that have
visual connections to the
logical concepts that they
are taken from.
As Devansh explained,
“We tackled the problem of
making calculus easier,
more aesthetically pleasing, and more approachable. We wanted to simplify the hardest things about
Calculus and we found that
it was the transition from
logic to mathematics that

made it so daunting. A lot
of time, with traditional
notation, things get lost in
translation, and success is
dependent on the student’s
analysis of that translation
rather than comprehending
the problem.” The idea for
their project was borne
when Devansh saw how
many of his classmates
struggled with the Calculus
course. He said, “Nobody
will deny that Calculus is
difficult, but I saw no reason
why that great, and almost
magical, thing couldn’t be
simpler.” The science fair

award is just one in a growing list of impressive academic accomplishments for
Devansh. Earlier in the
year, he garnered a thirdplace finish in the California
Math League competition.
He was recently elected
Vice President of the newly
formed Robotics Club at his
school, and is helping to
write a curriculum for a new
robotics class to be implemented there.
Devansh, a young man
with a keen intellect and an
already
impressive
resume, is quick to laud his

parents for their support
and encouragement in
helping him achieve so
much at such a young age.
His father, Dr. Pramod Vaid,
is well-known in the local
community as an educator
and businessman, and for
his work on the county
library commission. His
mother, Madhu Vaid, has
been a teacher for 25
years. In an interview conducted earlier this month,
Devansh spoke at length
about how his parents have
inspired, supported, and
encouraged him. Besides

instilling in him a strong
work ethic, Devansh said
that, since he was very
young, his parents gave
him more advanced mathematics and English lessons, before he was taught
the concepts they covered
in the classroom. “It paid
off immensely,” he said. “I
was able to skip first grade
after only a few weeks. My
parents’ constant push
toward my academic success helped drive my
sense of curiosity, and continually propelled me to
new heights.”

Beyond his academic
achievements, Devansh
strives to put his learning to
good use. Concern for others, just as it inspired his
science fair project, has
prompted him in other
undertakings, as well. “My
father
grew
up
in
Rajasthan,” said Devansh,
“a state in India that is blanketed by sandy deserts and
is barren, and therefore
lacking in many resources.”
According to the young
man, this lack of resources
makes life difficult for those
abiding in the region.
Devansh related that his
father confided in him at
one point that he hoped to
open a school in India for
underprivileged
youth
when he retired. “We both
saw the power of education,” he said, “and I dedicated myself to this crusade. We go to India every
year and, since the ninth
grade, I have been teaching children English and
Mathematics in the rural
areas of Rajasthan.” He
added, “I also spend a lot of
my free time exploring the
vast and diverse nation and
getting in touch with my cultural roots.” With another
year at DVHS before he
graduates, Devansh plans
to continue striving for
excellence. “I do what I do
because I love knowledge,”
he said. “In the words of
Talib Kweli, ‘Knowledge
itself is like life after death.’
That being said, I pursue as
much knowledge as I can
while trying to put that
knowledge to good use. In
doing so, I feel that I am
honoring not only that idea,
but my parents, who have
been such an inspiration to
me.”

Pakistan says Hindu
settlements in Kashmir
violate UN resolutions
Islamabad : An Indian
plan to resettle tens of
thousands of Hindus in
new townships in the
disputed Muslim-majority region of Kashmir is a
violation of UN Security
Council resolutions, a
Pakistani government
spokeswoman said on
Thursday. The divided
Himalayan region is
claimed by both Hindumajority
India
and
Islamic Pakistan and the
nuclear-armed neighbours have gone to war
two times over the territory since independence
in 1947.
Pakistan has long
pressed for the implementation of decadesold UN resolutions calling for a ballot for the
region to decide its
future. India says the
United Nations has no
role in Kashmir.
India's
nationalist
government said in early
April it planned to resettle tens of thousands of
Hindus in three new
townships in its part of
Kashmir. Pakistan's foreign ministry spokeswoman said that was
unacceptable.
"Any effort to create
special dedicated townships or zones, or any
other step to alter the
demographic make-up
of Jammu and Kashmir,
is in violation of the UN
Security Council resolutions,"
the
spokeswoman,
Tasneem
Aslam, told a regular
briefing.

"We have already
seen how the people of
Jammu and Kashmir are
resisting it," she said.
She did not elaborate,
but was apparently
referring
to
recent
protests
in
Indian
Kashmir.
Between 200,000 and
300,000 Hindus are estimated to have fled
Kashmir after an armed
revolt
against
New
Delhi's rule erupted in
1989. Prime Minister
Narendra
Modi's
Bharatiya Janata Party
has long vowed to return
them to their homes.
Kashmiri separatists
say the plan for townships for Hindus is an
Israel-style policy of creating settlements in
occupied territory.
About 100,000 people have been killed in
the separatist revolt in
Indian Kashmir that
India says is financed
and aided by Pakistan.
Pakistan denies the
accusation, saying it
only gives moral and
diplomatic support to the
Kashmiri people facing
rights abuses at the
hands of the Indian
army. After years of antiinsurgency operations
by Indian forces violence
has ebbed in Kashmir
over recent years. The
nuclear-armed neighbours occasionally hold
rounds of talks aimed at
improving relations but
there has been no sign
of any compromise on
Kashmir.

Pakistan condemns arrest of

Islamabad : Pakistan on

Pk bid to fuel separatism in Kashmir keeps border hot: BSF
New Delhi: Pakistan's
"implicit bid" to fuel separatism

on Thursday.
"Pakistan's strategy of
waging proxy wars, neighbouring areas flourishing as
markets for arms and drugs,
systematic use of fake Indian

BSF Director General DK

The TTP issued a statement and posted a video

video, released on Monday,
showed different parts of the
missile being assembled

That, Pathak said, requires
BSF to update "not only its

Islamabad:
Prime
Minister Nawaz Sharif on
Wednesday said that the
billions of dollars being
pumped-in by close ally
China in Pakistan is not a
loan or grant but an investment. "The money being
spent by China in Pakistan
is not a loan or grant but an
investment", the state-run
Radio Pakistan website
quoted Sharif as saying.
Talking to reporters in
London, before leaving for
Islamabad, he said that
China's investment in
Pakistan under a USD 46billion 3,000 km-long economic corridor project covers construction of motorways and installation of
energy projects.
He said new Gwadar
city in Balochistan will be
built with the cooperation
of China and its benefits
will be reaped by the entire
country. During President
Xi Jinping's maiden visit to
Islamabad earlier this
month, China had cemented its "all-weather ties"

with Pakistan by agreeing
to build the China-Pakistan
Economic Corridor (CPEC)
through Pakistan occupied
Kashmir, expanding the
communist giant's influence in the region.
A total of 51 agreements were signed in different fields, including
infrastructure
projects,
energy generation, agriculture, education, telecommunications and research.
Of the 51, 30 agreements were linked to the
strategic corridor, regarded
as the biggest connectivity
project between the two
countries after Karakoram
highway built in 1979.

One week on, Nepal quake death toll crosses 6,700;
govt says no possibility of finding more survivors

N

epal ruled out the possibility Saturday of finding
more survivors buried in
the rubble from a massive earthquake that killed more than 6,700
people and devastated vast
swathes of one of Asia's poorest
countries.
One week on from Nepal's
deadliest quake in over 80 years,
hopes of detecting more signs of
life among the ruins of the capital
Kathmandu had all but disappeared and the focus was shifting
to reaching survivors in far-flung
areas who have yet to receive
relief supplies.
The UN children's fund Unicef
warned of a race against time to
avert an outbreak of disease
among the 1.7 million youngsters
estimated to be living in the worsthit areas, with monsoon rains just
a few weeks away.
The 7.9-magnitude quake
wreaked a trail of death and
destruction when it erupted
around midday last Saturday,
reducing much of Kathmandu to
rubble and even triggering a
deadly avalanche on Mount
Everest. "It has already been one
week since the disaster," home
ministry spokesperson Laxmi
Prasad Dhakal told AFP.
"We are trying our best in rescue and relief work but now I don't
think that there is any possibility
of survivors under the rubble." As
well as updating the death toll to
6,621, Dhakal put the number of
injured at 14,023. While multiple
teams of rescuers from more than
20 countries have been using
sniffer dogs and heat-seeking
equipment to find survivors in the
rubble, no one has been pulled
alive since Thursday evening.

More than 100 people were also
killed in India and China. The
exact scale of the disaster was
still to emerge, with the mountainous terrain in the vast Himalayan
nation complicating the relief

effort.
The numbers of foreigners
who have died was also unclear
with around 1,000 EU citizens still
unaccounted for in Nepal, according to diplomats.

Missing Europeans: The
Europeans had mostly been
climbing in the Everest region or
trekking in the remote Langtang
range in the Himalayas near the
quake epicentre. "They are missing but we don't know what their
status is," EU ambassador to
Nepal Rensje Teerink told
reporters, confirming that 12 EU
citizens are known to have died
so far. Another EU official said on
condition of anonymity that the
majority were likely to be found
safe, but given the difficulty of the
terrain and poor communications,
their whereabouts were currently
unknown. Rameshwor Dangal,
joint secretary of Nepal's National
Disaster Management Division,
said many people were waiting to

either receive emergency aid
supplies or else be airlifted to
safety.
"In many areas people are not
getting relief and it is natural that
they are unhappy about it," he
told AFP. "We estimate that there
may still be around 1,000 people
in Sindhupalchowk and Rasuwa
areas who need to be rescued.
This includes the injured and the
stranded people, including the
foreigners."
AFP journalists who reached
part of Sindhupalchowk on Friday
reported scenes of utter devastation. "Almost every house in my
village is destroyed, and 20 people died. We lost our cattle and
our sheep," said Kumar
Ghorasainee, amid the ruins of

magnitude 8.1 earthquake in
eastern Nepal, about six miles
south of Mount Everest. A smaller quake in 1988 with a magnitude of 6.8 killed more than
1,000 people. Brian Tucker,
president and founder of
GeoHazards, said that in the
1990s, his organization predicted that if the 1934 quake were to
happen again, 40,000 people
would die because of migration
to the city where tall, flimsily built
buildings would collapse. In an
update just this month,
GeoHazards wrote, “With an
annual population growth rate of
6.5 percent and one of the highest urban densities in the world,
the 1.5 million people living in
the Katmandu Valley were clearly facing a serious and growing
earthquake risk.” The organization helped set up a local nonprofit to continue preparations,
including the reinforcement of
schools and hospitals.
Saturday’s
earthquake
occurred to the northwest of
Katmandu at a relatively shallow
depth, about nine miles, which

caused greater shaking at the
surface, but at magnitude 7.8, it
released less energy than the
1934 quake. Roger Bilham, a
professor of geological sciences
at the University of Colorado
who has studied the history of
earthquakes in that region, said
that the shaking lasted one to
two minutes, and the fault
slipped about 10 feet along the
rupture zone, which stretched
75 miles, passing under
Katmandu. The earthquake
“translated the whole city southward by 10 feet,” Dr. Bilham
said. Aftershocks as large as
magnitude 6.6 have occurred
mostly to the northeast of
Katmandu. It is possible that the
Saturday quake is a preface to
an even larger one, but Dr.
Bilham said that was unlikely.
Katmandu and the surrounding valley sit on an ancient
dried-up lake bed, which contributed to the devastation.
“Very, very soft soil, and the soft
soil amplifies seismic motion,”
Dr. Tucker said. Steep slopes in
the area are also prone to ava-

his hometown of Melamchi.
The 33-year-old English
teacher said the school had collapsed and there was nowhere for
the children to go. "No one has
come to help us -- the cars and
the aid trucks just drive by... How
will we manage now?"
In Melamchi, shops and
restaurants were closed and
streets were mainly deserted. In
nearby rice-farming communities,
almost all the houses had been
so severely damaged that they
were no longer habitable, and
locals were sleeping in makeshift
tents.
Disease fears: The Nepalese
government has acknowledged
being overwhelmed but the UN's
humanitarian chief defended its
performance.
"The scale and devastation
wreaked by the earthquake and
the aftershocks would have challenged any government," Valerie
Amos said on Friday.
Unicef said the health and
wellbeing of children affected by
the disaster were "hanging in the
balance" as so many had been
left homeless, in deep shock and
with no access to basic care.
"Hospitals are overflowing,
water is scarce, bodies are still
buried under the rubble and people are still sleeping in the open.
This is a perfect breeding ground
for diseases," said Rownak Khan,
Unicef's deputy representative in
Nepal. "We have a small window
of time to put in place measures
that will keep earthquake-affected
children safe from infectious disease outbreaks, a danger that
would be exacerbated by the wet
and muddy conditions brought on
with the rains," added Khan.

after one week 101 Ancient Collision Made Nepal Earthquake Inevitable
year old man rescued M

P

olice rescued a 101-yearold man from under the
rubble of his home on
Saturday, one week after an
earthquake hit his country, Nepal
Police spokesman Kamal Singh
Bam told CNN. The elderly man
is in stable condition and police
do not know how he survived or
the extent of his injuries. He was
rescued in Nuwakot district, just
northwest of the capital,
Kathmandu. The death toll from
the devastating magnitude-7.8
earthquake that struck Nepal last
weekend stands at 7,250, and
the number of people injured is
14,122, according to the National
Emergency Operation Center. A
Nepalese government minister
warned Sunday that the death toll
is expected to climb "much higher." "There are still villages where
we know that all houses have
been destroyed, but have not yet
been able to reach," Finance
Minister Ram Sharan Mahat said
at an event in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Mahat portrayed a desperately
bleak situation in his comments

at an event on the sidelines of an
Asian Development Bank meeting. "It is with great pain and sadness that I stand before you to
present the case of my country
Nepal which now remains devastated," he said, according to a
transcript of his remarks posted
on the bank's website. Mahat
said the quake had caused
"incalculable human loss and suffering, with millions of people rendered homeless."

ore than 25 million
years ago, India, once
a separate island on a
quickly sliding piece of the
Earth’s crust, crashed into Asia.
The two land masses are still
colliding, pushed together at a
speed of 1.5 to 2 inches a year.
The forces have pushed up the
highest mountains in the world,
in the Himalayas, and have set
off devastating earthquakes.
Experts had warned of the
danger to the people of
Katmandu for decades. The
death toll in Nepal on Saturday
was practically inevitable given
the tectonics, the local geology
that made the shaking worse
and the lax construction of buildings that could not withstand the
shaking.
GeoHazards
International, a nonprofit organization in Menlo Park, Calif., that
tries to help poorer, more vulnerable regions like Nepal prepare
for disasters, had noted that
major earthquakes struck that
region about every 75 years. In
1934 — 81 years ago — more
than 10,000 people died in a

lanches like the one that the
quake triggered on Mount
Everest on Saturday. Katmandu
is not the only place where a
deadly earthquake has been
expected. Dr. Tucker said
Tehran; Haiti; Lima, Peru; and
Padang, Indonesia, were similarly vulnerable. In those places,
nearby tectonic faults are under
strain, and building standards
and disaster preparations are
seen as inadequate. But not
everywhere has been complacent. Over the past 76 years,
many
earthquakes
have
occurred along a fault in northern Turkey, starting in the eastern part of the country and progressing west, toward Istanbul.
An earthquake in 1999 killed
more than 17,000 people, mostly in the city of Izmit, east of
Istanbul. The expectation is that
the epicenter of the next big
earthquake will be in or around
Istanbul. “Istanbul is the place
that has been most aggressive
in enforcing building codes,” Dr.
Tucker said. “I think Istanbul has
been doing a good job.”

Protesters again defy curfew in Baltimore after officers charged
BALTIMORE: Hundreds of
protesters broke the city of
Baltimore's curfew on
Saturday and several were
arrested, a day after six
police
officers
were
charged over the death of
an African-American man
in their custody.
Police in riot gear met
crowds of demonstrators
as the 10:00 pm to 5:00 am
order to stay indoors went
into effect.
For several nights in a
row protesters have defied
the curfew, imposed following riots, prompting numerous arrests.
Despite the curfew
arrests that included scuffles with police, tension
has subsided considerably
in the city. Baltimore has
seen days of protests over
alleged police racism and
excessive force following
the death of 25-year-old
Freddie Gray who was in
police custody.
A spontaneous street
party of thousands of people erupted in Baltimore
during the day Saturday a
day after charges were
announced against the officers involved in Gray's
arrest. People marching,
singing and dancing in the
streets cheered the surprise charges of the officers -- three of them black.

They face a range of
charges, including seconddegree
murder
and
manslaughter. "Peace and
calm is always better than
violence,"
Police
Commissioner
Anthony
Batts told reporters. "My
hope is that we work
towards a new level of
partnership in all parts of
our community as we
move forward."
The
Maryland National Guard
said on Twitter it had nearly
3,000 soldiers and airmen
ready to help "keep the
peace" in the city. But in
contrast to the violence
and looting that flared after
Gray's funeral on Monday,

there was a festive atmosphere in Baltimore, as
demonstrators -- white and
black -- gathered at City
Hall, the focal point of rallies in recent days. "I am
so inspired and encouraged by what I see," Mayor
Stephanie Rawlings-Blake
told CBS television affiliate
WJZ. "I think that there's a
lot of hope that in peace we
can seek justice." After the
rally, protesters marched
toward the neighborhood
where Gray was arrested
on April 12. He died a week
later from his injuries.
"Whose
streets?
Our
streets!" they chanted. "It's
been a frustration, what's

going on. Now we want to
stop police brutality, we
want peace," Autumn
Hooper, a 25-year-old
African American woman,
told AFP. The death of
Gray at the hands of police
has reignited simmering
resentment in the United
States over law enforcement tactics, particularly in
their dealings with African
Americans.
In video
recorded of the incident in
Baltimore, Gray appeared
to be in pain as he was
hustled into a police van.
He died seven days later
with 80 percent of his spine

Floyd Mayweather outboxed and outmaneuvered Manny Pacquiao to claim a
unanimous points victory in the most lucrative boxing match in history Saturday,
taking his unblemished professional record to 48-0 and cementing his place as
one of the greatest fighters of all time. After 12 high-intensity and often tactically
cautious rounds, the judges' scorecards at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas read
118-110, 116-112 and 116-112 in favor of Mayweather.

WASHINGTON: After

Baltimore's police union

Lawyer and activist Malik

He led

"No justice, no peace!"
Shabazz

Maryland Governor Bob

"I ask respectfully,

Maryland's branch of the

said "the curfew no longer
serves its intended purpose," in a statement.

Career Guide For 2015

May-2015

LEO

SAGITTARIUS

B

NOV 23-DEC 22

race up for a slightly uneven
month, both on your personal
and professional fronts. You may
be pulled on from the two aspects of
your life, which may make you angry
and drained. Ganesha advises you to
manage your time very carefully and
schedule your tasks in such a way that
you do not compromise on either side.
At work, you may not be satisfied with
the rewards of the efforts you have put
in, but be patient and peg on, as justice will soon be done. Freelancers
and businesspersons will earn a great
reputation among their clients/customers, but it will be far from a cakewalk. Be more flexible, and listen to
their demands and meet the required
deadlines to keep them happy. Your
financial situation may be a cause for
concern, but Ganesha assures you
that you shall get enough opportunities
to raise your bank balance. Just be
alert, and ensure that you grab the
opportunities as soon as they come.
Unexpected expenses may upset your
savings plan for the month.

Y

our sincerity and dedication as
a professional will be widely
recognised by one and all, but
more importantly by your superiors,
who are very likely to offer you a good
hike in your perks. You shall also manage to win their goodwill. Your recent
good run in almost all spheres of life
shall also help you earn a good reputation. Your seniors may also delegate
some important tasks to you. This
month shall be equally beneficial for
freelancers and businesspersons—
given the easy and profitable deals
awaiting them. Through overseas
clients, you may rake in huge profits.
However, things on the domestic front
may be delicate, as you have been
neglecting familial issues, owing to a
busy work schedule. Certain events
may disturb you, but Jupiter posited in
your Sign will help you calm down and
maintain a positive frame of mind.
Take some time out to get your priorities right. If you have been planning to
buy something expensive, such as a
property or a vehicle, this month is
auspicious for it, so go right ahead!

B

T

he road ahead may not be very
smooth, suggest the stars. But,
will that deter you? Not really,
for you will forge ahead with your
steely determination and meticulous
organisation, in spite of the planetary
configurations hurling numerous
obstacles in your path. At work, do not
get upset by the unpredictable behaviour of your colleagues or subordinates. This will also help you keep any
stress-related health issues at bay.
Your superiors may be able to become
a guiding and motivating force. There
is a likelihood of an accident or a
minor injury, particularly on the lower
part of the body. Digestive and respiratory systems could also cause problems. Take precautionary measures to
avoid complications. Your health may
be especially vulnerable now, warns
Ganesha, and if you manage to keep
it in top shape, all other challenges
may seem to melt away.

T

APR 21-MAY 21

he month's beginning may
seem challenging to you, but
Ganesha assures you that by
the end of the month, you shall succeed in your objectives and achieve
your goals. This is bound to make you
and your family members happy.
However, in the early stages of the
month, you will need to be very cautious. Do keep your temper in check. If
you get disturbed by circumstances,
you may lose your focus. And if, you
get irritated with people, you may end
up saying stuff you will regret. Overall,
in such situations things may work to
your detriment. Try to be diplomatic,
thus, especially while discussing
money matters. If you plan to commit,
seek an expert’s opinion, before giving
a nod. Know that one wrong judgment
may lead to your money getting stuck
and returns getting delayed. Career
matters shall again be on the forefront.

I

f you are in a job, you shall have to
be very careful this month, especially while communicating with the
higher-ups. Using impolite words or
saying things in a sarcastic way may
land you in trouble. However, this
does not mean that you should not put
across your views frankly; do so by all
means, but be humble while doing so.
On the domestic front, too, be compassionate with your near and dear
ones, as the chances of arguments
leading to disharmony are high this
month. Renovating your home, replacing old furniture or vehicle or receiving
gifts from in-laws may put you and
your family in high spirits. If you are a
businessperson, you shall have lots to
rejoice, as you are likely to enter into
a supply contract with a business
tycoon. However, you shall have to
negotiate hard, and entertain him/her
to bag the deal. The positive influence
of Jupiter will present you with myriad
opportunities to strengthen your financial position. Refrain from succumbing

uccess amidst struggle, strife
and slow growth shall be the
theme of the month for your
Sign. And, there are three things
you will need to remember--to come
out unscathed of these planetary
vibes, says Ganesha. One, watch
your temperament, as you are likely
to act in a very unreliable and capricious manner, which may affront
your colleagues and even superiors
at work and loved ones at home.
Ganesha advises you to be very
careful during this phase not to hurt
anyone by thought, word or deed.
Two, do not be bogged down by
looming deadlines and tightening
pressure, as this is something that
is largely out of your hand. Just
give your best shot, and if you happen to miss a deadline by a narrow
margin, be ready with a genuine
explanation. Third and most important—do not lose hope.

his month, Ganesha warns you to
be careful about your finances, as
two major planets, Saturn and
Jupiter, aspect the 12th House of
Expenses. This aspect could induce
you to spend your money on unnecessary things. Besides, on the axis of the
2nd and 8th House, the malefic shadow
planets Ketu and Rahu would be posited. These too will pose hurdles on the
financial front for you. However, if you
strictly set some money aside for emergencies, you shall be fine. On the professional front, be wary of your tempertantrums, as neither peers nor superiors will take kindly to them. On the
home front, you may not see eye to eye
with your spouse on certain matters,
and if one of you does not stay cool,
even minor differences of opinion can
lead to bitter arguments, adversely
affecting your relationship. Try to sort
out tricky issues amicably and enjoy a
healthy and blissful conjugal life.

G

MAR 21-APR 20

anesha predicts that the cosmos will favour you this
month. Nonetheless, the onus
shall lie on you, and you shall have to
work hard to get real success. If you
are a freelancer, you may find deadlines hard to meet, but again, if you
work dedicatedly, you will manage
well. Avoid taking stress, even if seniors overload you with work, or the
situation may adversely affect your
efficiency. You may have to do some
multi-tasking, but do so with a cool
head. If you are a businessperson,
this is a perfect time to plan, travel,
explore and indulge in activities related to sales and services. With two
fiery planets, Sun and Mars posited in
the 2nd House, related to speech and
money, from your Sign, you will need
to be extra careful with finances and
communication, especially during the
first week of the month.

JAN 21-FEB 19

rimming with confidence, you
shall take a lot of initiative in
your job, much to the delight of
your bosses. Your peers, too, shall
be very cooperative and with their
help you are likely to scale new
heights this month. However, the
influence of Mars will make you feel
irritable. Don’t let your mood affect
the workplace; be humble while
interacting with superiors. Also, be
very careful of your temperamental
nature, lest you end up hurting the
sentiments of people around you.
On the domestic side, this phase
will give you a chance to sort out
issues with your partner. Put your
ego aside, iron out differences and
simply enjoy the pleasures of marital life! On the financial front, you
shall be comfortable. Ganesha
advises you to make smart investments to secure yours and your
family’s future. You have one more
reason to cheer up: unexpected
returns, extra earnings or forgotten
income/recovery of money is likely
to raise your cash reserves.

AUG 24-SEPT 23

CANCER
he month begins on a mixed note
– there shall be some hectic
times, but the promise of some
respite shall keep you in a cheerful
mood. However, if do not remain careful, this month you could miss out on
some good opportunities--to make
some extra cash. As per your planetary
configurations, Ganesha also advises
you to postpone taking important decisions regarding financial matters. Keep
a watchful eye on your previous investments, and if the returns are not satisfactory, take steps to invest your funds
in a better avenue. You are likely to
gain by renting or selling a property.
This will put you in a financially comfortable position. Being family-oriented, you
are likely to decide to spend a part of
this financial gain for your family’s betterment. You are also likely to plan a
pilgrimage or a family outing to maintain
the cheer and harmony.

AQUARIUS

VIRGO

DEC 23-JAN 20
our personal life and monetary
matters largely dominate your
platter this month. In all likelihood, this is likely to be a routine,
monotonous month. You shall not find
much intellectual stimulation, and the
monotony may drain you in the initial
part of the month. Ganesha points
out that this is the best time to
unwind and recharge your batteries.
Perhaps you could take a small
break and go on an excursion for a
change of air. On and off, though,
there are bound to be some stimulating opportunities, which you will need
to be ready to grab. Personally, you
will tend to be a bit of an introvert,
and your lack of involvement,
whether at home or in office, may be
misconstrued as arrogance, and people around you may not take it too
kindly. Refrain from getting worked
up by criticism. Take this in right spirit, and push yourself to improve.

MAY 22-JUNE 21

he dark clouds hovering over you
in the initial stages of the month
will begin to clear off, post the first
week, assures Ganesha. So, keep up
your spirits! Usually performance-oriented and too impatient for results, you are
likely to experience some constraints,
during the first week of the month. But,
don’t blame yourself, as the challenges
are mostly due to Saturn, which is now
posited in an Opposition aspect to your
Sign. This may be compensated, particularly during the 2nd week of this
month, when the positive influence of
Jupiter shall help you overcome the
negativities. The presence of Mercury in
your Sign too will keep you energized,
encouraging you to work with renewed
vigour. Let your get-up-and-go attitude
do the talking. At work, your superiors
and subordinates are likely to praise
your dedication and performance, as
much as your ebullient initiative.

MI beat KXIP by 23 runs for third consecutive win in IPL 8

O

pening
batsmen
Lendl Simmons (71
in 56 balls) and
Parthiv Patel (59 in 36 balls)
helped Mumbai Indians (MI)
register their third consecutive victory, beating Kings XI
Punjab (KXIP) by 23 runs in
an Indian Premier League
(IPL) encounter in Mohali on
Sunday.
Riding on the 111-run
stand between Simmons

and Parthiv, MI posted a
challenging total of 172/3 in
20 overs at the Punjab
Cricket Association (PCA)
Stadium. In reply, KXIP were
never ahead of the game
and eventually they were
restricted to 149/7 in 20
overs. David Miller (37-ball
43) and Murali Vijay (34-ball
39) tried their best but they
were not enough. Following
this defeat, KXIP slumped to

their seventh loss of the season, while MI registered
fourth victory in nine matches. Earlier, after Mumbai
skipper Rohit Sharma won
the toss and opted to bat,
Simmons and Parthiv rose
to the task and gave their
team a perfect start with a
111-run stand.
Simmons and Parthiv
played some delightful shots
all around the carpet to set

the ball rolling for the visitors. Parthiv showed his
intent in the fifth over bowled
by surprising first-change
bowler Mitchell Johnson.
The Indian collected 17 runs
from the Australian left-arm
seamer's first over. Mumbai
reached 51 in the first six
overs of powerplay and the
right-left combination duo
continued to attack the
Punjab bowlers.

Islamic State claim responsibility for Jalalabad bomb in first Afghanistan attack
A suicide bombing in
Jalalabad is the first time
that Isil have staged a terrorist attack in Afghanistan
A suicide bomber has
killed 33 people queuing
outside
a
bank
in
Jalalabad in what is
thought to be the first terrorist attack in Afghanistan
carried out by Islamic
State.
Government employees
were
targeted
in
Saturday's attack - the
worst in Afghanistan since
November - which was
thought to have been carried out by a suicide
bomber on a bicycle or
motorbike. Another blast
took place near a shrine
and municipality buildings,
and bomb disposal experts
detonated a third explosive
device.
Smoke billowed from
the building and windows
were shattered in the blast,
which left people lying in
pools of blood and body
parts scattered across the
ground. Dr Najeebullah
Kamawal, head of the
provincial hospital, said

that over 100 people were
injured in the bomb –
among them many children.
Taliban
spokesman
Zabihullah Mujahid said
that his group was not
behind the "evil" attack.
Ashraf Ghani, the president of Afghanistan, condemned the attack and
said Islamic State of Iraq
and the Levant (Isil) had
claimed responsibility.
"Carrying out terrorist
attacks in cities and public
places are the most cowardly acts of terror by terrorists targeting innocent
civilians," he said, on a
visit
to
northeastern
Badakhshan province.
"Who claimed responsibility for the horrific attack?
The Taliban did not claim
responsibility
for
the
attack, Daesh (Isil) claimed
responsibility
for
the
attack."
Last month Mr Ghani
had used a visit to the
White House to announce
that Isil had already sent
"advance guards" to his
country, and warn of

impending attacks.
An Isil spokesperson,
Shahidullah
Shahid,
claimed
responsibility
online, and identified the
suicide bomber as Abu
Muhammed
Khurasani.
Shahid is among a number
of former Taliban leaders
and groups that have
declared their allegiance to
Abu Bakr-al Baghdadi, the
self-styled Caliph of Isil,
which has overrun parts of

Syria and Iraq.
Afghan security officials
react at the scene of a suicide bomb attack in
Jalalabad (EPA)
Isil published an image
of Khurasani, kneeling
before an Isil banner and
with a Kalashnikov beside
him, reading what looked
like a suicide note.
An email from the group
reportedly confirmed the

claim, and boasted of
"sending 75 government
servants to hell."
And the explosion
would mark the first time
that Isil have carried out a
terrorist assault inside
Afghanistan.
In September the group
published leaflets claiming
that
Pakistan
and
Afghanistan formed part of
their territory. A Taliban
fighter in Afghanistan told
the BBC at the time that
many of his organisation
were considering throwing
their support behind Isil.
"We are waiting to see if
they meet the requirements for an Islamic
caliphate,"
said
Commander Mirwais. "We
are sure that our leadership will announce their
allegiance to them. They
are great mujahideen."
A month later the
Pakistani Taliban, under
the command of Shadid,
announced that they were
supporting Isil. The Taliban
have now seen a series of
defections to Isil in recent
months, with some insur-

gents voicing their disaffection with their one-eyed
supreme leader Mullah
Omar, who has not been
seen since the 2001 USled
invasion
of
Afghanistan.
Saturday's attack now
means that Isil are active
in Libya, Egypt and
Afghanistan – as well as
the territory they control in
Syria and Iraq.
Nigeria's
Islamists,
Boko Haram, announced
their allegiance to Isil in
March – but most analysts
dismissed that as empty
posturing. Isil are thought
to be courting Somali terrorists with Al Shabaab,
but no formal link has been
declared. And the bombing
came as Afghanistan
braces for what is expected to be a bloody push by
the Taliban at the start of
the fighting season. The
Taliban have stepped up
attacks on government
and foreign targets since
Washington back-pedalled
on plans to shrink the US
force in Afghanistan this
year by nearly half.

Amnesty
International
report. What's more, it
says, they are being
ignored by their government. It shows that those
who
campaign
for
women's rights - such as
police, doctors, teachers,
journalists and laywers have been targeted by the
Taliban, warlords and government officials. Najiba
Ayubi, a journalist who
heads one of the country's
biggest private media
groups, Killid, is one of
those women. In the 25
years that she has been

working as an investigative
reporter, she has faced
numerous threats. Here,
she tells us what it's like
campaigning for justice in
a country where she feels
the government has turned
its back on her: "It’s very
risky working here. There
are a lot of gangs in the
cities. But it’s riskier if
you’re a woman. And even
worse if you're a woman
and a journalist.

Taliban henchman
who was accused of
murder
in
Afghanistan
has
been
allowed to stay in Britain on
human rights grounds. The
32-year-old Afghan, known
only by the initials SAKA
after his name was kept
secret by the courts, claimed
he spent four years in jail in
Kandahar
after
being
accused of killing a provincial governor’s son. He
escaped from jail and went
into hiding, but eventually
fled the country and made
his way to Britain. He
claimed asylum but his case
was rejected by Theresa
May, the Home Secretary.
Now the immigration
courts have overturned her
decision and allowed SAKA
to stay in this country –
potentially indefinitely –
because he was entitled to

asylum and protection under
the European Convention on
Human
Rights.
SAKA
claimed his father had been
forced to join the Taliban as
a commander and was in
charge of 65 men. SAKA
claimed he agreed to work
as a Taliban bodyguard
because he was concerned
about his father’s safety.
“During his time with the

Taliban he saw a leader …
behead a man because he
believed him to be a spy.
After this incident his father
decided to leave the
Taliban,” said court papers in
the case. “Whilst crossing
the desert the appellant and
his father were arrested and
placed in detention. “The
appellant was accused of
killing MK, the son of the

governor of Herat. “The
appellant claims he then
spent four years in Sarpoza
prison in Kandahar and was
never formally convicted or
tried. “He claimed he was
tortured and his head was
covered and he was beaten.” The papers went on:
“He managed to escape
from the prison and went
with a fellow Taliban member
to his home in Kunduz
where he remained with him
for six months in hiding.
” It was not disclosed how
or when SAKA arrived in this
country. The Immigration
Tribunal papers showed that
the Home Secretary considered whether SAKA should
be excluded from protection
in line with the Geneva
Convention and whether his
presence in Britain “constituted a danger to the community”.

Armchair killers: life as a drone pilot

I

n the film Good Kill, Ethan Hawke
plays a drone pilot troubled by his
work. What's it really like to take a
life from thousands of miles away
with the push of a button
Its nickname is Predator Porn,
and John Reed used to watch it 12
hours a day. Sometimes it was horrific, sometimes it was life affirming;
mostly it was just dull. But whenever
fellow soldiers at his airbase in
Nevada wandered past the "live
feeds" from his console, he'd notice
how their eyes would wander to the
screen and have trouble looking
away. Small wonder. For the cameras on the Predator drones that
Reed once operated offer a voyeuristic experience unlike no other. Filmed
from two miles up, but with a lens so
powerful it feels like a hawk hovering
at 100 feet, the cameras captured
parallel lives in some of Iraq and

Afghanistan's most hostile corners.
On his screen at the Combined Joint
Predator Task Force, 50 miles north
of Las Vegas, Reed and his colleagues would watch locals going
about their business, sometimes in
the harsh light of the midday sun,
sometimes in the black and white silhouettes of infrared night vision.
Often they would be unsuspecting
farmers or market traders, women
hanging out the washing or children
playing, but sometimes it might be a
high-value al-Qaeda or Taliban figure. At which point, Predator Porn
goes well beyond mere voyeurism.
The pilot sitting next to the camera
operators would pull a trigger on a
joystick, and a missile would snake
down from 15,000 feet. Roughly 15
seconds later, whatever was in the
camera lens would vanish in a cloud
of dust. If the target was an al-Qaeda

VIP, staff across the Task Force
might even "The feeds from the
Predator drones are available for
hundreds of different people to watch
all over the drone operating centre,”
says London-born Reed, 43, who
served for six years with the task
force on secondment from the RAF.

“It can be hard for people to take their
eyes off it. If it's an operation to hit
some well-known terrorist, you'll see
people crowding around the
screens." Reed worked with the task
force from a row of drab container
units at Creech Air Force base, all
specially air-conditioned to deal with
Nevada's baking desert heat. Like
Las Vegas, it is a place that never
sleeps. Throughout the theatres of
the global war on terror, its drones
keep watch 24-7, be it on Taliban
warlords in Afghanistan, al-Shabaab
militants in Somalia, or Islamic State
fighters in Syria. Right now, there
may be one hunting full-time for
Jihadi John. When I met Reed
recently, however, it was to talk about
how drones themselves have now
had the cameras turned on them –
courtesy of Good Kill, a new movie
about the secretive war waged from

Creech. Starring Ethan Hawke as a
drone operator with a troubled conscience, it is Hollywood's first major
stab at the growing ethical debate
around "killing by remote control", not
least in terms of the psychological
impact on those who do it. Just like
American Sniper, Clint Eastwood's
biopic of marksman Chris Kyle, Good
Kill touches on controversial issues.
It is about those who play God in
modern warfare, the people who
decide from afar who lives and who
dies. Since Reed is one of the few
ex-drone operators willing to talk
about his work, I was keen to hear
what he thought of the film. That
sense of "playing God" can be even
greater for a drone operator than it is
for a sniper. Their remoteness from
their target is measured by thousands of miles, not hundreds of
metres.

CAIR’S 4TH MUSLIM DAY AT CAPITOL, SACRAMENTO,
ATTRACTS THOUSANDS OF MUSLIM ATTENDEES

Khilafat: key to progress and success for Muslims.
The Islamic Khilafat – Its Rise, Fall, and Re-emergence

Rafi ahmad
In this essay, we will examine
the concept of the khilafat, its rise,
fall, and reemergence, and discuss
its relevance in modern times.
The Arabic word khalifa means
successor. The term caliph is simply an anglicized version of khalifa.
The terms khilafat and caliphate,
though derived from khalifa and
caliph respectively, have different
connotations. Khilafat refers to the
Islamic institution of spiritual successorship, whereas caliphate
implies a politico-religious Muslim
state governed by a caliph [6, 14].
Theological Foundations of
Khilafat
The Holy Quran makes several
references to the term khalifa, but it
does not expound upon the prerogative, scope, authority, or manner
of establishment of khilafat. Our
understanding of khilafat and how

it draws its legitimacy is essentially
based on the following Quranic
verse.
Allah has promised to those
among you who believe and act
righteously, that He will surely
make them Successors (khalifas)
in the earth, as He made
Successors from among those who
were before them; and that He will
surely establish for them their religion, which He has chosen for
them; and that He will surely grant
them security and peace in place of
their fear. (24:56)
In this verse, the Holy Quran
presents the institution of khilafat
as a reward for collective piety. It is
often interpreted to provide a basis
for an Islamic polity founded upon
the democratic lines headed by a
khalifa whose office is, in principle,
elective and bound by the Quran
and the sunnah.

In a well-known hadith, the
Prophet MuhammedSAW is reported to have observed:
Prophethood shall remain
among you as long as God wills.
Then khilafat on the pattern of
prophethood will commence and
remain as long as He wills. A corrupt monarchy shall then follow
and it shall remain as long as God
wills. There shall then be a tyrannical despotism which shall remain
as long as God wills. Then once
again khilafat will emerge on the
precept of prophethood. [Masnad¬Ahmad, Mishkat, Chapter AlAnzarWalTahzir].
This hadith not only reassures
us about the reemergence of
divinely guided khilafat but it also
passes a historical judgment on
what was to follow the early
Khilafat.
Khilafat and State

The Islamic view is that sovereignty over the universe belongs to
God, but mankind, as God’s
deputy, is vested with authority in
certain spheres, as a trust, for
which it is accountable to God.
HadhratZafrulla Khan wrote:
“As God’s sovereignty extends
over the universe, the ultimate
ideal of a state in Islam is a universal federation or confederation of
autonomous states, associated
together for upholding freedom of
conscience, for the maintenance of
peace, and for cooperation in promoting human welfare throughout
the world…” [5]
The role played by a khalifa is
both spiritual and secular.
According to, Hadhrat Mirza Tahir
AhmadRZ, Khalifatul-Masih IV, the
implication of a khalifa being the
spiritual head of a confederation of
states is that the khalifa, if he sees

fit, may relegate most or all his secular authority to the elected representatives of the members of the
confederation [3]. Thus the concept
of khilafat transcends national sovereignty and ethnic divide and
forms a truly universal supranational entity.
A khalifa has the promise of
divine support so long as it remains
firmly based on the precept of
prophethood – that is, the principles and prototypes exemplified by
prophets. He is bound by the ordinances of divine law. He decides
questions of policy after consultation with the chosen representatives of the people. The concept of
khilafat is thus imbued with both
secular and religious characteristics.
The institution of khilafat is
based on the precept of prophethood; and therefore, like prophet-

hood, it can exist and flourish without a state.
The Rightly-Guided Khalifas
When
the
Prophet
MuhammedSAW died (632 C.E.),
Hadhrat Abu Bakr succeeded to his
spiritual, political, and administrative functions as successor of the
messenger of God (khalifarasul
Allah). Bernard Lewis, the preeminent historian of Islam, observes:
“Abu Bakr was given the title of
Khalifa or ‘Deputy’ (of the prophet)
… and his election marks the inauguration of the great historic institution of the Caliphate. His electors
can have no idea of later functions
and development of the office. At
the time, they made no attempt to
delimit his duties or powers. The
sole condition of his appointment
was the maintenance of the heritage of the Prophet.” [10]

he is known for setting style
trends in Bollywood but
actress Priyanka Chopra says
she never took fashion seriously and
her look is just an extension of her
mind.The 32-year-old former Miss
World said she just tries to be unique
whenever she attends any event. "I
never thought I am a stylish. For me
style is always a representation of
what you want to wear but doing it in
a unique way and expressing your-

self. Every girl loves to be stylish,"
she told reporters here on the sidelines of HT Delhi's Most Stylish
Awards 2015.
For the glitzy ceremony last
evening, the "Mary Kom" star opted a
silver leather dress and teamed with
grey socks on heels. "It's a silver
leather outfit. I just love my shoes. I
think wearing heels with socks is very
cool. I have just put my mood today. I
was feeling adventurous, hence the

silver leather," she said.
Priyanka is busy promoting her
upcoming multi-starrer film "Dil
Dhadkne Do". She has also lent her
voice with Farhan Akhtar for the film's
title track. "We are 'Dil Dhadkne Do'
at the moment. We are launching the
film's music soon and response to my
song and 'Gallan Goodiyan' have
been amazing. The film is super
refreshing and very sure that people
will like this movie," she said.
