Healthy Eating
When I was a schoolboy back in the early
1980’s I hated school dinners. British school
dinners were notoriously terrible - unhealthy,
unappetizing and often inedible. Since then not
much changed until British TV celebrity chef,
Jamie Oliver, decided to do something about it.
Jamie Oliver is famous for his restaurants
and his TV show the Naked Chef, but he is
also a campaigner for healthy eating.
In 2005, Oliver produced a fourpart documentary series on Channel 4 called School Dinners. During
the series he took over a school
kitchen for one year. He showed
that schools were serving too much
junk food. It was either too fatty or
too salty. And it certainly was not
healthy enough. In many cases it
was also not tasty enough. So Oliver
showed that it is possible to provide a
menu of healthy, delicious school
dinners, that are also not too expensive.
Oliver believes that meals should be
fun and interesting, but also healthy and

nutritious. He believes it is important to feed
our children properly, so that they do not
grow up to be unhealthy and overweight, as
this can lead to other health problems such
as diabetes. Too many British children are
growing up with unhealthy eating habits.
Jamie even went to meet the British Prime
Minister to discuss the problem and possible
solutions. Jamie suggested that the government needed to help change our
fast food culture. Partly as a result of Oliver’s campaign, the
government promised to spend
280 million pounds over three
years to improve school meals.
Jamie has since gone on to
produce a similar TV show in
America, called Jamie Oliver’s
Food Revolution, in which he
visits one of the most unhealthy cities in the USA and
tries to improve its residents'
eating habits.
