Just purchased a Viore 24" model LED24VF60 and of course my Charter Cable remote control did not have the Viore
brand listed as a TV code but I did get it to work by searching for the code. Look in your remote control's manual and
follow the instructions, it DID work work for me--I can control the TV's volume (and mute) and turn it on/off.
For the Charter OCAP 4-Device Remote Control (by Universal Electronics) the procedure for searching for a TV code is as
follows:
2. On the remote, press TV once (TV key blinks once). Then press and hold SET UP until the TV key blinks twice.
3. Enter 9 9 1 (TV key blinks twice).
4. Press 1 (TV key blinks twice).
5. Aim remote at TV and press Power.
6. Press and release the CH+ key continuously, then stop when TV turns off.
7. Press Power. The TV should turn on, then press SET UP to lock in the code.
Note: If the TV does not turn on in step 7, then slowly press and release CH- to go back through the codes, then press

SET UP when the TV turns on.

Your FiOS (and cable TV) Set-Top Box (STB) is a device that needs to be able to process signals in real-time, record (if you
have a DVR), respond to your remote, and send video and audio out to your display and stereo in a number of different
formats.
There's a lot of information that your STB would like to tell you. It's available in the Diagnostic menu. You don't really need
to know about this menu. But for those with a technical curiosity, or, need to troubleshoot something, this is the menu for
you.
If you are looking to change your STB's output resolution, aspect ratio, closed captioning, or HDMI advanced settings;
that's the setup menu. With the STB On, hit "Power, Select, Menu" in quick sequence.
To enter the diagnostics menu: With your STB powered On, hit "Power, Select, Select" quickly in sequence from the front
panel or remote. To exit the menu, hit "Power" to turn off the STB. The next power up will be back to normal.
Digital Adapters (DCT700): This box has an entirely different diagnostics menu. See the next section.
d01 GENERAL STATUS: System status information. Displays a top level error code and lots of times and dates. Remod
Channel might be the RF tuner output channel.
d02 PURCHASE STATUS: Previous purchases.
d03 OOB Status: Out Of Band. On Verizon, it's used for firmware and channel map and other items to allow you to see the
video. 75.25 MHz.
d04 Inband Status: The status of the current channel, from an RF perspective. WIth the STB ON, select the channel of
interest, then access the diagnostic menu. The menu will report the channel it's currently tuned to. Be careful to note which
tuner is in use. My HD-DVR has 2 tuners, the current channel was on Tuner 2, not Tuner 1.
SNR is >37 dB, AGC "Good", 0 errors. Helpful if you have pixelation errors or lose a channel. I mapped a few channels:
Notice that the STB is using the SD digital channels for 2 - 49, not the analog. Knowing the right frequency is very helpful if
you think you are having signal problems. Like if you are having a problem on a channel at 800 MHz and not having
problem at 100 MHz, check your coax. Or, if you are using a QAM tuner without an STB, you could map frequencies to
channels. d05 UNIT ADDRESS: Displays the MAC address of the STB and others; such as DOCSIS, Ethernet, 1394, and
USB. TVPC Installed: Some sort of renewable security for a TV PassCard. No for my STB. d06 Current Channel Status.
Displays info about the channel, but with a focus on the digital status. Includes the flags used to set copy protection. AVS
forum has a thread for those interested in recording over firewire:»www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/ ··· t=403695 Search that
thread for interpretation of the flag status. One set of info for each tuner. d07 Upstream Status: "Ethernet Return". Get
your STB's IP settings and MAC address here. DHCP stuff, DNS enabled, RADD Name Resolved (?). Looks like the IP
address is configured for IPv6: 0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:192.168.001.100. d08 Code Modules: The firmware
versions. Platform Built: Version: 19.38, Nov 15, 2007 13:36:00 Code objects: fios_0064 version 5.68 (shown in IMG as
Build Number), odc_0064 version 8.68 (shown in IMG as data object filename). Digital Secure Processor: M02. Analog
Secure Processor: none. d09 MEMORY CONFIG: Onboard memory. System 128 MB, Flash 16 MB, NvRAM 256kb. d10
Audio/Video Status: Use this to check the audio and video formats. Audio: Surround, Video: 16:9 1920 x 1080i 30 (also
4:3 528 x 480i 30 for local SD). The "30" means 30 Hz refresh. d11 Interface Port Status: All things digital plugged in.
Displays status of firewire (1394), USB, MoCA. Like if the firewire port is enabled (Y) and active (N). Page 2 is the display
EDID data. It's a map of supported video resolution formats. Helpful for debugging 480i vs. 480p vs. 720p vs. 1080i. Page 3 contains details about the 1394 copy protection status, e.g. 5C implementation. Same as D06 menu, but in E-Z
read format. d12 USER SETTING STATUS: A repeat of the setup menu. Verifies what you entered. d13 DVR/HDD Status:
Hard drive central. Like size (160 GB), disk space, IDE, model, etc. The bottom of the screen contains the hard drive
temperature. Temp: 100F 38C, Max: 113F 45.0C, Over Temp: No, Count: 0 (Current temperature 100 deg F or 38 deg
C, maximum was 113 deg F or 45 deg C, is not over temperature now, has been over temperature 0 times). d14
Application Specific Information: Blank entries for server names and IPs. Guess I don't have anything specific. d15
Interactive Status: IP all 0's, nothing active here. Perhaps on a different STB. d16 Connected Home: This is how your STB
talks to the ActionTec router (that's not my real MAC address). RF Freq: 1150 MHz, MoCA 10/10, RF Password: (blank),
MAC/IP: 01:23:45:67:89:AB, 169.254.001.209. You can match this to the ActionTec router. Page 4 (scroll up/down)
shows the STB's TX data rates in Mbps. I think it might be useful for those with home media DVRs that transfer their videos
around the house. My data rate is around 241 Mbps. d17 Keypad/LED: Test your keypad and LED. U D I M P, etc. Front
panel testing. Press each arrow or button and watch the associated letter get highlighted. Use your remote to back out of
the menu. Power key will turn the STB off. Digital Adapters (DCT700) Diagnostic Menu: Here's the info for the DCT700
(digital adapter). I used the installation manual to help with the explanations, found here: »www.comcast.com/medialib ···
0man.pdf To access the diagnostics menu, start with the STB ON, then hit POWER, OK. There's no front panel, so

everything is via the remote. The menu is somewhat similar to the STB 64xx series, but it's more of a "barebones"view
only type of box. More networking, less on-board stuff. 01 GENERAL STATUS: Error codes, number of pending purchases.
Tuner is Alps TDER-001A. 02 OOB STATUS: Out-Of-Band status. I think this is the state of the data channel used for the
info pop-up. In here, hit "Menu" to change the channel. Read the manual for more info (!). If you select a channel that it
can't lock to, you need to power cycle the box (Off / On with remote). It will then give a Verizon "start-up" menu while it
fixes what you broke. No harm, it will reset back to the right channel (75.25 MHz in Philly). 03 IN BAND STATUS: The RF
details of the channel you were watching. Get your SNR, error counts, frequency, modulation format here. No AGC,
however. 04 AUDIO/VIDEO STATUS: Status of the audio and video. Audio: mono, stereo, or surround (a lot of good that
does for this box. ). Video: Mute Black (Probably what it does with no signal (black screen). Other choices are Unmuted, or
Mute Still) 05 UNIT ADDRESS: MAC and multicast addresses. All 0's. 06 FIRMWARE VERSION: Operating system and boot
firmware rev info here. Version 3.18 Jan 11, 2007, Boot ver. 3.09 07 CURRENT CHANNEL STATUS: Additional info- analog
/ digital, encrypted (ENC) / unencrypted (UNE). Tuned frequency = Carrier frequency + 1.75 MHz (in manual). 08
RENEWABLE SECURITY: If a TvPC (TV Pass Card) card is required. N/A for this box. 09 UPSTREAM MODEM: RF return
channel info. Disabled. 10 APP CODE MODULES: Application Code Modules. The various pieces of the firmware. fios0700
Version 4.10. 11 MEMORY CONFIG: Onboard memory configuration. DRAM - 8 GB, flash - 2 GB. 12 INTERACTIVE INFO:
Not used. 13 MAC FREQUENCY TABLE: For upstream communication. Not used. 14 CONTROL CHANNELS: Control
channels. Not much info except that there's activity on 0, 1, 8, 9. 15 MESSAGE TYPES: PID counts. Not much info, but it's
active (numbers are changing). 16 IN BAND PAT: Program Association Table. Description is Motorola use only. OK. 17 IN
BAND PMT: Program Map Table. Description is Motorola use only. OK, no problem. 18 TASK STATUS: Description is
Motorola use only. It's the task manager for the box. Task IDs are in most recent (highest order) first. Scroll down to see
the entire list. 19 USB STATUS: USB port diagnostics. Blank - not in this box. 20 IB MCA STATUS: In-Band Multicast
Address Filter. Not used. 21 KEYBOARD / LED: N/A for this box.

Actiontec MI424-WR Rev. I (a.k.a. MI424WR-GEN3I) running F/W 40.21.18
We dropped the Home Media DVR in 2013-01 to compensate for cost creep. We dropped the HD STB in 2014-08 for that
reason and others .
As of 2016 the remaining DVR has become flaky as hell, but we can't replace it without losing all of our recordings.
In the first incarnation of FiOS we had a Motorola QIP6416-2 DVR, two Motorola QIP2500-3 STBs, and an earlier
generation MI424-WR router.

Router and network issues
Can't get into router
This problem went away when we upgraded from Rev. E to Rev. I of the Actiontec MI424-WR router.
You know the admin account name and password for the router, and possibly you even logged into it successfully before
somebody pushed out an update that changed the login page. but now whenever you try to type the password, you get
multiple characters per keystroke and the password field goes berserk. You can't log in no matter what. Using copy and
paste to enter the password prevents the berserk behaviors, but you still can't log in.
This problem is caused by Verizon's customization of the router's login page. The solution is easier than you might think.
1. Stop trying to work around the problem with copy and paste.

2.
3.
4.
5.

Stop trying to make the number of characters in the password field match the number of characters that you type.
Close your eyes.
Type the password.
Hit Enter.

That's it. The problem is inflicted by some weird JavaScript code that (a) only works with interactive keyboard input, not
copy-and-paste, and (b) generates all those scary extra characters. Use the force, trust your feelings, and just type the
darned password.

Changes to MAC filter access list don't Apply
IIRC, this problem was corrected by a firmware update to the Rev. E router. Certainly the Rev. I router never had the
problem.
Symptom: Persistent inability to connect to a secured WLAN despite putting in all the right security settings.
Cause: Adding a device to the MAC filter list and clicking on Apply does not actually Apply.
Workaround: After changing the access list, uncheck Enable Access List, Apply, re-check Enable Access List, re-check
"Accept all devices listed below," Apply.

ARP doesn't work
This problem persists with the Rev. I router.
Symptom: Nearly always get Destination Host Unreachable when trying to establish a connection between the WLAN and
the LAN. The only time it even sometimes works is immediately after the router has been rebooted.
Superficial cause: ARP broadcasts do not propagate reliably. I'm not sure what role the MI424-WR is supposed to be
playing in this, be it bridging or Proxy ARP or both, but whatever is supposed to be happening, isn't happening.
Workaround: Static ARP tables on all hosts. It's not much of a solution, going back to the dark ages of networking, but it's
the best answer I have for now. Probably there is a simple configuration setting on the router that totally fixes this, but I've
looked and haven't found it.

Favorite web site suddenly horrible
Symptom: You used to have no problem watching adorable kitten videos or ing software updates from a favorite web site.
Suddenly, you can't get a single video to play for more than a few seconds before it stops and the s take an eternity. The
change was neither gradual nor episodic: suddenly one day it got bad and stayed bad, regardless of the time of day or how
many times you rebooted.
Possible cause: Some web sites apparently try to tune their outbound traffic based on a measurement of how fast the
client is receiving it. When the client PC is old and slow, this process can go wrong, resulting in stop-and-go behavior. The
problem could indeed begin suddenly one day because of a change made at the web site or its ISP.
Workaround: Try it on a faster PC (before you buy).
Alternate cause: Verizon has not admitted to deliberate throttling. However, network congestion that you come by
honestly, so to speak, doesn't behave like that.
Workaround: If the problem is indeed deliberate throttling, then some technical means to defeat it might work temporarily.
However, it's an arms race at best, and at worst you could get in trouble for violating some service agreement or anticonsumer law (for messing with something that officially doesn't exist, duh).

TV issues
Can't get closed captions
Problem experienced with Motorola QIP6416-2 DVR and Sharp LC-32GP1U TV connected via HDMI, but probably applies to
many other configurations: Can't get closed captions.
The Sharp TV has the following behaviors with respect to closed captions:
Analog cable: OK
Combined video: OK
Component video 480i: broken (drops and mangles captions)
Component video 480p: NO captions
HDMI: NO captions
Fortunately, the DVR has its own closed caption decoder. You can enable it via Verizon's menu by doing Menu → Settings
→ Accessibility → Closed Captions. With the 1.9 update (2011-10), you can furthermore change fonts, colors, etc. from
the same menu. In the old days, you had to do it like this (tested only with Motorola QIP6416-2 DVR):
1. While the TV is on but the DVR is OFF and NOT RECORDING ANYTHING. press menu (either on the front panel of the DVR

or on the remote) to access the DVR's configuration menu.
If the DVR is not off, you will get the Verizon menu instead of the DVR's configuration menu.
If the DVR is recording, you won't be able to access the configuration menu at all.
If a recording is scheduled to begin while you are in the menu, it will dump you out of the menu and not let you back in.
2. Enable captions on the configuration menu and select fonts, colors, etc.
3. Cycle power on the DVR.
4. Should have captions now.

Sound volume fluctuates randomly
Problem: The sound volume fluctuates randomly sometimes, most noticeably when listening to a music station.
This problem is caused by an STB feature—audio compression—that, ironically, has the purpose of making the sound
volume more consistent. Compression does help bring up those channels that broadcast at unusually low volume, but it is
not good for music.
The way to disable this feature is Menu → Settings → Audio → Dynamic Range, OK, and change it from Heavy to None.

DVR fails to record a scheduled program or only records part of it
Possible causes (other than buggy DVR firmware):
1. Your DVR spontaneously rebooted during the program. They do that.
2. You tried to record a channel that you aren't subscribed to. This can easily happen since the guide is not always caught up with
which channels went away this week.
3. You tried to record more than two programs at the same time, or you tried to watch a third channel while two programs were
recording.
4. If you schedule one program to record immediately after another and the programs have safety margins on the start and end
times, there is a brief period of overlap in which you will need both tuners and may unknowingly blow away a third program. To
avoid this, you need to edit the detailed recording options to eliminate the safety margins.
5. If more than two "record entire series" programs apply at the same time, the DVR will choose the two with the highest priority
and ignore all others.
6. The program guide is wrong, not the execution of the program per se. This is worked around by doing a manual program.
7. If the list of series recordings becomes very long, you'll be confused about what should record and what shouldn't, and the DVR
might be too. If you tend to hit "record entire series" a lot, it's a good idea to go through the list once in a while and purge those
series recordings that are no longer active.
8. There is a setting in the DVR menus to choose whether to record repeats or only first-run episodes of a series, and another
setting to choose how many episodes of a series to retain.
9. Power failure or network failure.

Banner ads in program guide, annoying stuff always popping up
For what it's worth, there are menu options to tone down the active content under Menu → Settings → Notifications.
The banner at the bottom of the program guide was a particularly intolerable annoyance that stole real estate from the
already too-short channel listing. For many months there was nothing you could do about it. As of 2014-08 you could turn
off the random ads, but the banner didn't go away; it just turned into a fixed Verizon banner. In 2014-10 it finally went
away.

Current DVR firmware flubs
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

It gets into a state where it won't play anything until it is rebooted.
It spontaneously reboots at random times.
Rebooting the box turns off closed captioning.
The setting to show only subscribed channels in the program guide doesn't stick at all.
You can no longer fast forward an on-demand video. Instead, a window pops up to explain that it won't work, as if that makes it
less of a regression.
6. Would be nice to be able to suppress the SD channels that duplicate subscribed HD channels without losing the non-duplicate
SD channels, and simultaneously suppress all channels that are not subscribed.
I no longer have the equipment to test for bugs in home media streaming or remote operations on DVRs.

External hard drive disappeared
Don't blame me if you lose your programs. The following worked for me and did not erase the contents of the external
drive.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Ensure that the DVR and the external hard drive are on.
Unplug the eSATA cord from the external hard drive.
Plug it back in.
Unplug the other end of the eSATA cord from the DVR.
Plug it back in.

6. Proceed through the DVR → Enable More Storage menu option. It should say something about external storage was already
enabled on this box so press OK to reboot, and NOT something about formatting your drive. If OK, allow it to reboot, and
hopefully the drive will come back.

The wicked, evil fembot
If you have made her acquaintance, you'll know who I'm talking about. If you haven't met her yet, you will.
When you need to get rid of her, the magic word is "agent." Use it insistently. She might refuse to budge unless you first
choose which of the following options best describes your problem, yadda ya, but having done that, you should get
through to an actual real live person. I'm told that hitting zero repeatedly also works.
Hopefully that will be an improvement. I don't worry about robots passing the Turing test. I worry about people flunking it.
If she goes off on a tangent, try saying "continue" or yell any three-syllable curse that ends with "you."
These tricks only work by phone. There is no way to get through to a live person by e-mail.
