Anonymous donor speaks out
By Sue Golden Frederick County Report The anonymous donors who paid for burned cat Tigger’s care began reading about the Fletcher family and the fire that destroyed their home on Halloween in Frederick County Report. The couple was having dinner at Castiglia’s in Winchester. “My husband and I discussed the situation on our ride home. We really wanted to do something to help.” The donors continued to follow news of the family in Frederick County Report. “It was wonderful hearing about so many people coming together to help the family, especially during the holidays.” The couple are cat lovers. They have three cats and take care of a fourth. When they saw pictures of Tigger and heard about the vet bill at the Plaza Pet Clinic in Winchester, the donors made a call and paid the bill in full. “Tigger is such a cute thing and the family has been through so much that we had to help. Being cat lovers, we know how hard it is to have your pet away from you. Hopefully it helps to start the family become whole again. The picture of Colton holding Tigger on last week’s cover was adorable!” The couple does not want recognition; they just wanted to be helpful. “If everyone does a little bit to help, so much can get done. We wanted something good to come out of this tragedy.” Dr. Wartluft, Tigger’s primary care vet at the Plaza Pet Clinic, assured this reporter that the veterinary clinic did not hold Tigger hostage for its bill. According to Dr. Wartluft, “we told the family they could take Tigger home as soon as he was able. We were happy to work with the family to get the bill paid. We all fell in love with Tigger and hated to let him go, but we wanted him home with his family as soon as possible.” The clinic wrote-off almost $1,000 in Tigger’s care from the bill. Tracy Fletcher said the family is working its way through the holiday season. “Everyone has been a big help. It’s hard on everyone when you lose everything. My son Hunter’s room was decorated with all of his awards for grades and athletics. That is the kind of loss that breaks your heart. But we are thrilled to have Tigger back home where he beFather of 8 looking for work. Trying to make ends meet and help them have a good Christmas. I am willing to do anything to make money. I’m not asking for a hand out, just a helping hand. Also, hauling scrap metal for free. Please just call. Any help is appreciated.

longs.” Thank you again to everyone who has helped the Fletchers.

Plans are being made for additional fund raisers, which will be announced in this paper.

I bought three strings of exterior holiday lights last year to decorate the trees in my backyard. This year, although I put them up the same way, half the bulbs on one string won’t light. What’s going on? — Carol in Cocoa, Fla. The problem is likely as simple as a single burned-out light bulb halfway down the string. Turn on the lights as you normally do and locate the first bulb on the string that will not light up. Mark that bulb with a small bit of masking tape so you can find it again, and then unplug the string. Go to the box where you stored your holiday lights and look for a container or a small plastic bag that contains replacement bulbs and fuses. Return to your string, locate the burned-out bulb, remove it by pulling it firmly straight out of the socket, and put a replacement bulb in its place. (The new bulb must be the same size and type as the old one.) Plug the string back in and turn on. If the bulb was the culprit, the entire string will relight. If that method doesn’t work, you may have a fuse issue. Fuses are locat-

ed in each of the plugs. If your strings are attached end-to-end and the failure occurs at one of these attachment points, try removing the old fuse from the attached end and putting in a replacement fuse (be sure to unplug the entire string before doing this, just to be safe). Fuse faults can occur when too many strings are attached end-to-end, overAvoid using holiday lights marked “indoor use only” on the outside of your house or in your yard, for safety reasons. Use exterior lights instead.

loading the circuit. Read the package instructions to find out the maximum number of light strings that can be attached to each other (three strings is a good limit). Winchester’s expansion on Green Circle ‘works out’
By Jonathan Bennett Frederick County Report The Green Circle pedestrian path around the city of Winchester has gained more than one foothold recently, helping the nearly two-decade project in its power-walk toward completion. Planning Director Tim Youmans says that City officials voted on Tuesday, December 13 to develop, with consultants, two measures involving the Circle. One, known as the Amherst Street segment, leads from Old Town out to Meadow Branch Avenue across from the Winchester Medical Center. The Council also voted to acquire two acres of land behind the Moose Lodge on East Cork Street; this second section will be known as Town Run Linear Park, Phase 2. The construction of the path, meant for walking, jogging and bicycling, has been a start-andstop process since 1994 when city officials deemed it an official project and not just the abstract idea it had been as far back as twenty years ago. The path was originally conceived to provide a safe, environmentally sound seven-to-eight miles for residents, tourists and students in Winchester to utilize as an alternate mode of travelling within the City, involving Town Run waterways as much as possible. The Circle includes, but isn’t limited to, important City destinations like Shenandoah University and Jim Barnett Park, Winchester Medical Center and the Old Town Historic District. “Considerations have to be made when implementing new phases of the path,” says Tim. “For example, this being an environmentally-oriented project, we want to plant trees as much as possible along the path. We take into account drainage and erosion issues. We work with landowners, as was the case with the Amherst Street Improvement Project across property belonging to the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley and the recent acquisition from the Moose Lodge.” For instance, when securing easements–or rights-ofpassage–from landowners, a new

fence might need to be erected to separate the path from the privately held land, or trash containers put in place to discourage littering along the path. Of course, with an undertaking like the Green Circle, one meant for use by and for the benefit of the general public, ambition must be tempered with a priority for safety and availability of usable funds. Aside from existing street lamps (and additional ones as deemed necessary) for those using the path after daylight, some parts of the Circle are currently accessible to one another only by

Reindeer not all red-nosed Rudolphs
While Rudolph might be the most famous reindeer, there remains no documented evidence of a red-nosed reindeer guiding Santa’s sleigh on an especially stormy Christmas Eve. But just because no one has yet to find the real Rudolph, that doesn’t mean we don’t know a few things about Santa’s sled buddies. • Reindeer are also known as Caribou in North America. • Females generally weigh between 170 to 260 lbs., while males are often much larger, weighing as little as 200 lbs. but as much as 460 lbs. • Reindeer reside in both the Arctic and Subarctic, and hunting of wild reindeer and herding of semi-domesticated reindeer is important to several Arctic and Subarctic people. • Reindeer fur can vary considerably. In northern populations, reindeer tend to have white fur, while southern populations are darker in color. • Reindeer size can also vary depending on location, as southern reindeer populations tend to be larger than their northern counterparts. • In most reindeer populations, both males and females grow antlers. Among deer, reindeer have the largest antlers in relation to body size. • Males often battle with each other by locking antlers for the right to mate with certain females. • During migration, some reindeer reach speeds of 37 to 50 miles per hour.

Obama, viral YouTube video play in Va. senate race
By Jonathan Lucci Frederick County Report The eyes of the nation will be fixed on the Presidential election next November, but many political watchers are looking very closely at Virginia, as it may hold the answer to who will control the US Senate going forward. The razor-thin majority held by the Democrats is at risk and taking a Democratic seat in the Old Dominion would go a long way toward putting Republicans back in power. With President Obama at the top of the ticket and the fate of the House and White House in doubt, the prospect of a Republican controlled government is terrifying nervous Democrats. Tim Kaine, the Democrat, and Republican George Allen met for their first debate on December 7th in Richmond and both candidates scored some blows. Allen has previously served the state as a US Senator and Tim Kaine was a popular, moderate Democratic governor before going off to become the chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Kaine tried during the debate to frame Allen as the kind of Republican that voters overwhelmingly rejected in 2006 and 2008. Allen for his part attempted to marry the image of President Obama, unpopular at the moment in Virginia, with that of Tim Kaine. Allen pointed out that Kaine had basically been a spokesperson for the President as the chair of the DNC. Considering Kaine’s personal popularity as governor, it will be his time at the DNC and his relationship with President Obama that will likely hurt him the most. Kaine and the President are close and the President seriously considered Kaine as a running mate, though eventually gave in to voices of doubt over Kaine’s outspoken Catholic faith and somewhat pro-life views. Kaine seized on Allen’s misstep from 2006, when he called a dark-skinned supporter of his opponent at a rally “macaca” in a video that quickly went viral on YouTube and turned Allen from a top-tier presidential prospect into an ex-Senator. The comment will no doubt be used by the Democrats again to try and paint Allen as an example of the worst of Virginia’s past. Allen’s path to the nomination, while considered inevitable, is not clear. He is facing off against tea party candidates and is not beloved by the far right wing of the party. At the same time it will be difficult for him to win if he alienates the

Gift baskets make an easy, affordable option
The go-to gift of late is the gift card. Chance are, though, that recipients -- although thrilled that they can do their own shopping -- may find gift cards a bit impersonal. Statistics indicate that around $100 million in gift cards are purchased every year in the U.S. Despite being a popular gift item, roughly six to 10 percent of all gift cards go unused, according to the Tower Group. Some even come with inactivity fees. As an alternative to gift cards, gift baskets may be a welcome change. Gift baskets are relatively easy to put together and sometimes, especially around key holidays, can be purchased ready-made. Grouping similarly themed items together to fit a particular interest can fit the bill when shoppers can’t decide on a gift to buy. The advantage to gift baskets is that they can be assembled for just about any hobby, interest or occasion. They don’t even have to be in a traditional “basket.” Here’s a look of some easy gift groupings to fit a wide variety of events. * New baby: A collection of baby-themed items works when wishing new parents well. It can also be a good solution for when all of the bigger-scale items on a baby registry have already been purchased and only the smaller, lower-priced things are left. Put together infant T-shirts, wash cloths, outlet safety plugs, shampoo, diapers, and the other things new parents may not immediately think to buy. Wrap it all up in a portable baby bathtub for a container that has utility. * Housewarming: Kitchen essentials are good ideas for newlyweds or those who just bought a new home. Scour the kitchen tool aisles of department stores or specialty shops. These can be themed according to what is purchased as well. For example, fill a large mixing bowl with a rubber spatula, a box of paper muffin cups, cake mix, and mixing spoons for the person who loves to bake.

SALE!

Food and beverage groupings are popular choices for gift baskets.

* Travel: Getting ready to take a trip can be a bit hectic, and a traveler may overlook some of the essentials that can make the vacation more pleasurable. Items like a travel alarm clock, miniature size toiletries, traveler’s checks, gum, a journal, travel guides, and a memory card for the person’s camera are good ideas. Pack all of these things inside of an expandable tote bag. * Kids activity bag: A simple gift that fits the needs of kids is a backpack or tote bag filled with boredom-busters. These can include portable manipulative toys, coloring books, crayons, colored pencils, puzzles, DVDs, a disposable camera, and any other toys that fit the interests of the recipient. * Host/hostess gift: Saying thanks to a friend or family member who has invited you over for a dinner or overnight stay can be as simple as grouping a few things together. Put together a basket with a set of sheets, hand towels, pillow and other essentials that can be appreciated by future guests. * Food: One gift idea that goes quite well in a gift basket is food. Pick a theme and put the items together. Barbecue lovers can appreciate sauce, shish kabob skewers, spice rubs, a cookbook, hickory chips, grill tools, and other similar items. Gift baskets are personalized gifts that are easy to assemble and can be a viable alternative to gift cards.

Republican George Allen

Goldizen, Riley & Co. Real Estate
Democrat Tim Kaine much more moderate to liberal voters that have been flocking to Northern Virginia for years. The debate, while civil, indicates that the campaign ahead will be marked by negativity and political attacks. Allen will attack President Obama and attempt to tie him together with Kaine, while Kaine will attack Allen’s record as a Senator in a time when Republicans became very unpopular. Kaine in particular wants to appear as the moderate alternative to a man he wants to paint as a reactionary conservative. His image is still solid in Virginia, despite his time as chair of the DNC, but many voters may not be aware that he held that position. Allen and his campaign war chest will make sure to pound that into every voters head, while Kaine will likely spend millions on ads describing Allen as out of touch and extremist.

Letters
Letter to the Editor Frederick County Report The Fletcher family cannot say thank you enough to all of the members of the community who have reached out to help us since we lost our home to fire on Halloween. The expressions of support, donations and continued caring are exactly the reason we live in this community. We cannot name all of you individually, but a special thank you to all of the fire and rescue responders, the employees of Middletown, this newspaper, local corporate donors, the Red Cross, Frederick County Public Schools and all of the anonymous donors who helped us move forward. We couldn’t have done it without you. In the spirit of the holidays, we wish each and every one of you the most joyous of holiday seasons. We will be together in our new home, celebrating family and the return of Tigger. As Colton says every time we leave the interstate for the Middletown exit: “We’re home!” Thank you and happy holidays. – The Fletcher Family.

Last-minute shopping for the holidays
It’s December 22 and you’ve just barely made it through half of your holiday shopping list. The panic may have set in that you just don’t have enough time to get everything done. This is a common scenario around the holidays. Shoppers have the best intentions to get their gifts early, but whether because of work obligations or social events, the task seems to get pushed further and further into December. Soon many are staring down the calendar experiencing sweaty palms. Many others may be putting off holiday shopping simply because of the current state of the economy and affordability. According to a Steelhouse Marketing Consultants poll of 1,000 consumers, 62 percent predict they will spend less money on the 2011 holiday season. Plus, 56 percent of families predict they will comparison shop more than they have in the past. These factors may contribute to just how long shoppers put off actually getting into stores or going online to shop. For the scores of shoppers who consciously or subconsciously wait until the last possible minute to shop, there are ways to survive and surprise friends and family with great gifts. * Gift cards: They may not have sentimental meaning behind them, but gift cards are fast and easy. Chances are you can run into a store and be out with a handful of gift cards in less than 15 minutes, depending on lines at the checkout counter. Also, many supermarkets, bookstores and other retailers offer gift card kiosks enabling you to shop for different gift cards all in one place. * Food and beverages: While everyone is heading to the mall in droves, you can be stepping inside of a gourmet food or spirits store. Splurge on fine cheeses or that trendy bottle of liquor that a gift recipient has mentioned but not yet purchased for him- or herself. * Magazine subscription: A magazine subscription is an easy fix as a last-minute gift. Purchase one copy of the magazine at the newsstand and wrap it up nicely. Put a note that a year’s worth of this periodical is on the way. No one will suspect that the gift was a last-minute thought. * E-certificates: Retailers like music or book sellers will e-mail a gift certificate code to the person of your choice on a selected date. For those who are never without an e-reader or mp3 player, digital gifts could fit the bill. * Gas card: It may sound funny and tacky, but a gas card from a brand-name station is a universally acceptable gift for anyone who drives regularly. With fluctuating gas prices, filling up the tank can be an expensive venture. Having a pre-paid gift card can help. Online retailers are also there to help last-minute shoppers. Many online retailers guarantee in-time-for-Christmas shipping even on gifts ordered as late as December 23. However, overnight shipping charges will cost more. But it’s all worth it to get the item in time. Waiting until the last minute for shopping can induce some anxiety. But knowing about easy gifts for procrastinators can take the stress out of this type of shopping.

The Rotary Club will also participate in the Woodstock Christmas parade, transporting Santa Claus to town in the same antique fire truck that will deliver gifts on Christmas Eve. “We are counting on contributions from the generous residents of the Shenandoah Valley to supplement Club dollars for our Christmas Eve gift deliveries.” Contributions can be made to any Rotarian or sent to the Club at P. Registration is needed to join the reading program. Those interested should stop by their library’s children’s room to register and pick up the reading materials. Reading activities and materials are available at all three locations of Handley Regional Library during the month of reading emphasis. At Bowman, on Saturday, January 7th from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., children will be part of the book If You Give a Dog a Donut by Laura Numeroff and go to different stations. For instance, one station will give out a donut, at another station they will hear a story, and so forth. And, of course, there will be “snuggle with a book” time. The exuberant dog that first appeared in If You Give a Pig a Party is now the star of his very own book. Written in the irresistible “If You Give…” tradition, If You Give a Dog a Donut is another home run from the beloved team of author Laura Numeroff and illustrator Felicia Bond. If you give a dog a donut, he’ll ask for some apple juice to go with it. When you give him the juice, he’ll drink it all up. Then, before you can say ‘Woof’ . . . Dog is off on a backyard adventure! In other words, they’re opening themselves up to being scammed. Even if one of these financial seminars is hosted by your local senior center or another trusted local organization, do your homework in advance. Call the center to ask who checked it out, and how. Go online and do a search for the company’s name. What are their true qualifications? Are they local? See if there are any complaints at the Better Business Bureau. And if you go to a free lunch seminar (don’t go, but if you do): Don’t fill out any forms that give your personal information. Even giving your telephone number could be a step toward being harassed. That “Free” Lunch Could Cost Plenty

Those free-lunch seminar scams are still going on. That’s because it’s lucrative for scammers. They want to separate you from your money, and too often they succeed. The American Association of Retired Persons has released a study on victims of scam seminars and other financial risks to seniors. The study showed that people who are more likely than the general population to fall for investment scams have the following behaviors: They will listen to sales pitches on the phone, attend promotions where a free night’s stay or a meal is given, provide personal information to salespeople, allow people to come into their home for a sales pitch, read junk mail, not hang up on telemarketers, and call 1-800 numbers to send for free information.
