Tongues are wagging in Mid-
dletown again. Is it the “for
sale” of the Wayside Inn? An-
other fery town council meet-
ing? Te Robbie Limon beneft
at the Wayside Teatre?
No. Everyone in Middletown
is talking about the 20 foot
blowup snowman on Pleas-
ant View Avenue. According to
Mrs. Alley, she complained to
her husband and son last year
that they did not decorate any
more. Te men took matters
into their own hands. Tere
are lights around the porch.
Lights will be going up around
the house. And there is a snow-
man in the front yard that easily
clears the roof line of the house.
“Te way they hooked the
snowman up was ingenious!”
says Mrs. Alley. Want to see
the ever popular snowman? All
you need to do is ask anyone in
Middletown.
Note to kids – you still need
to be good. Santa has been
all around Frederick County
recently. He recently visited
the Blue Ridge Hospice Trift
store in Stephens City with
Mrs. Claus. He also stopped by
Sneakers Educational Childcare
in Winchester. Santa was very
impressed that the gift tree at
Sneakers was collecting goods
to be delivered to the SPCA in
Winchester. We can’t forget all
the animals waiting for their
forever homes this holiday!

Marshal’s ofce would like to an-
nounce the addition of Walker,
an Acceleratn Detection Ca-
nine. Walker has been exten-
sively trained through the ATF’s
12 week training program in the
detection of a wide range of ig-
nitable liquids. Training takes
place in a variety of settings such
as schools, vehicles, fre scenes,
ofce buildings, and parking lots.
Walker and his handler, Lt. Mark
Showers, will recertify yearly
with the ATF to maintain Walk-
er’s certifcation and skill level.
Te addition of an Acceler-
ant Detection Canine will help
reduce the overall time involved
in investigative activities due to
their ability to isolate various
scents which otherwise require
detailed and time consuming
searches by investigative person-
nel. In addition to assisting with
investigations, Walker will be
available for demonstrations by
request, for schools and commu-
nity events.

What would the holidays be
without snowfakes falling outside,
a mug of hot cocoa in hand and a
favorite Christmas movie on tele-
vision?
Television is full of feel-good
movies come the holiday season.
Choose from among classic ficks
you have watched year after year
or new movies vying for spots as
soon-to-be favorites.
Watching Christmas movies is
a holiday tradition for many fami-
lies. So much so that lines from
popular movies are easily remem-
bered and recognized. Tose who
can recite movies verbatim might
enjoy testing their mettle with the
following Christmas quiz loaded
with memorable quotes from some
holiday classics.
Movie Quotes Quiz
1. “It came without ribbons. It
came without tags. It came with-
out packages, boxes or bags.”
2. “Uh, since the United States
Government declares this man to
be Santa Claus, this court will not
dispute it. Case dismissed.”
3. “If TV has taught me any-
thing, it’s that miracles always hap-
pen to poor kids at Christmas. It
happened to Tiny Tim, it happened
to Charlie Brown, it happened to
Te Smurfs, and it’s gonna happen
to us!”
4. “I want an ofcial Red Ryder,
carbine action, 200 shot range
model air rife.”
5. “Bless this highly nutritious
microwavable macaroni and
cheese dinner and the people who
sold it on sale. Amen.”
6. “Iris, in the movies, we have
leading ladies and we have the best
friend. You, I can tell, are a leading
lady, but for some reason, you’re
behaving like the best friend.”
7. “Who gave you permission
to tell Charlie there was no Santa
Claus? I think if we’re going to de-
stroy our son’s delusions, I should
be a part of it.”
8. “I want to wash my hands, my
face, my hair with snow.”
9. “We’re not just doing this for
us. We’re doing it for the kids. For
every kid who ever sat on Santa’s
lap. For every little girl who left
cookies and milk for Santa on
Christmas night. For every little
boy who opens a package Christ-
mas morning and fnds clothes in-
stead of toys. It breaks my heart.”
10. “We all know that Christ-
mas is a big commercial racket. It’s
run by a big Eastern syndicate you
know.”
11. “I fear you more than any
spectre I have seen. But as I know
your purpose is to do me good,
and as I hope to live to be another
man from what I was, I am pre-
pared to bear your company, and
do it with a thankful heart. Will
you not speak to me?”
12. “Seeing is believing, but
sometimes the most real things in
the world are the things we can’t
see.”
13. “Light the lamp, not the rat,
light the lamp, not the rat! Put me
out, put me out, put me out!”
14. “Tell me something, Billy.
How come a cute little guy like
this can turn into a thousand ugly
monsters?”
15. “Wanna see some magic?
OK, let’s watch you disappear!”
16. “Tat’s not ‘my’ Christmas!
‘My’ Christmas is flled with laugh-
ter, and joy... and this: my Sandy
Claws outft. I want you to make
it.”
17. “Tat’s neither pig nor pork,

Frederick County Report
It is sad, but true; the Wayside Inn
in Middletown is for sale again. Te
Charons, Jacob and Lois, bought the
Inn from the Bernstein Family Foun-
dation in April 2009. At the time,
the Charons planned to just live in
the Inn. Once they moved to Mid-
dletown and realized what the Inn
meant to people, the Charons decid-
ed to give innkeeping a try. Accord-
ing to Lois, “we are business people;
we know how to run businesses and
be successful.”
Tat very success helped spur the
sale of the Inn. “We really want to
retire. We have been running the
Inn, serving meals, planning and
scheduling events, and fxing the Inn
since day one. It is too much for two
people.”
Lois says the Inn was very run
down when they purchased it. Tey
have replaced the roof, painted, and
fxed a wide assortment of electri-
cal and plumbing problems. Many
of the kitchen appliances have been
updated. Te grounds, too, have
been redone. Lois says they continue
to improve the property.
At the same time, the Charons be-
lieve their lives have been too “dis-
rupted” running the Inn and the res-
taurant. It is a non-stop job; one that
the Charons were not expecting.
“We have been making good money,
even considering al of the money we
are reinvesting in the property. We
do a lot of the work ourselves, which
helps.”
One way the Charons are attempt-
ing to get their lives back prior to
the sale of the Inn is by discontinu-
ing the restaurant. Te Inn still hosts
special events: weddings, parties,
even recently a wake. Special events
can be arranged by contacting the
Inn. However, as seen over and over
again, people stopping by the Inn for
a meal or a cocktail are turned away.
Lois said they are still making money
with only the Inn and special events,
and that the pace is signifcantly less.
Reaction to the sale is mixed. Peo-
ple love the Wayside Inn and what
it represents in Middletown, both
as a social venue and as a histori-
cal marker in the community. Local
performer and Middletown resident
Robbie Limon has played at the
Wayside Inn for years. “Te Inn de-
serves to be open to the public and
to keep the “oldest continuously op-
erating” distinction. It should not be
a private home. Hopefully the new
owners will reopen the Inn and the
restaurant and share it with the pub-
lic.”
Anita Holley, also a Middletown
resident and a member of the plan-
ning commission, fears more dire
measures. “Tere is nothing to pre-
vent the Inn from demolition. Mid-
dletown did not enact an historic
overlay ordinance, which would have
protected the integrity of the Inn.”
She understands that there is no fed-
eral protection because the age of
various pieces of the Inn are incon-
gruous. Also, the highway marker on
Route 81 will most likely be removed
if the Inn does not serve meals.
Te removal of the market dove-
tails with Irish Isle owner Brian
Coughlan’s views. Te loss of the
Wayside Inn is a loss for everyone in
town, including the businesses. Te
Isle gets busy during weddings at
the Wayside Inn. Inn guests usually
stroll down Main Street to check out
the Isle. “One business bounces of
the others; the more businesses we
have in Middletown, the better it is
for all businesses.”

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An
old adversary wants to make amends
over the holidays. The decision is
yours. But wouldn’t it be nice to share
the upcoming new year with another
friend?
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) As
news of your work gets around, expect
to receive a special holiday “gift” from
influential contacts who could help
you launch your new projects in the
new year.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20)
Instead of fussing over what you
didn’t do to prepare for the holidays,
relax and enjoy the kudos for a job tru-
ly well done. A happy surprise awaits
you early next year.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The
best way to shake off lingering holi-
day blues is to join loved ones in the
fun and festivities of this special time.
A confusing situation starts to make
sense in upcoming weeks.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) Special
emotional rewards mark this holiday
time for Leos and Leonas who are able
to open up to new relationships and the
possibilities they offer in the upcom-
ing year.
VIRGO (August 23 to September
22) Your efforts to make the holidays
especially memorable for some people
will be rewarded in some unexpect-
ed (but very welcome) ways in the
upcoming year.
LIBRA (September 23 to October
22) Be assured that your efforts to
make this holiday special for every-
one won’t go unnoticed by those who
could make some important changes
in your life.
SCORPIO (October 23 to Novem-
ber 21) Lots of folks want you to light
up their holiday parties. But try to take
some quiet time ‘twixt those glittering
galas to spend with some very special
people.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22
to December 21) While the current
round of holiday revels has your social
life on the fast track, someone special
might want to keep pace with you next
year, as well.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to
January 19) Enjoy all the fun you
deserve at this holiday time. However,
don’t lose sight of the need to check
out some of the changes the new year
is expected to bring.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to Febru-
ary 18) What happens during this holi-
day time can help clear up some of the
confusion jeopardizing a once-stable
relationship. Follow your instincts on
what to do next.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20)
Your holidays are brightened by new
friends eager to become part of your
life. But don’t forget to spend time
with that one special person. (You
know who!)
BORN THIS WEEK: You have the
ability to encourage people to reach
their potential by setting an example

• On Dec. 30, 1853, the United States
acquires 30,000 square miles of land
in what is now southern New Mexico
and Arizona for $15 million. The pur-
chase settled the dispute over the loca-
tion of the Mexican border west of El
Paso, Texas, and established the final
boundaries of the southern United
States.
• On Dec. 28, 1869, the Knights of
Labor, a labor union of tailors in Phila-
delphia, holds the first Labor Day cer-
emonies in American history. In 1894,
Congress designated the first Monday
in September a legal holiday for all
federal employees and the residents of
the District of Columbia.
• On Dec. 29, 1878, the first game is
played between two teams of the first
professional baseball league in Cuba.
Baseball was introduced in Cuba
around 1864, when some students
returned home from studying in the
United States and introduced their fel-
low islanders to the bat and ball.
• On Dec. 25, 1880, Layne Hall is
born in Mississippi. When he died
in 1990, Hall was the oldest licensed
driver in the United States. In his
nearly 75 years on the road, Hall nev-
er got a speeding ticket or citation of
any kind.
• On Dec. 26, 1917, during World
War I, President Woodrow Wilson
announces the nationalization of many
of the country’s railroads. The Rail-
road Control Act stated that within 21
months of a peace treaty, the railroads
would be returned to their owners. In
March 1920, the railroads became pri-
vate property once again.
• On Dec. 27, 1932, at the height of the
Great Depression, thousands of people
turn out for the opening of Radio City
Music Hall in New York City. Radio
City Music Hall was designed as a pal-
ace for the people — a place of beauty
where ordinary folks could see high-
quality entertainment. It remains the
largest indoor theater in the world.
• On Dec. 24, 1979, the Soviet
Union invades Afghanistan under
the pretext of upholding the Soviet-
Afghan Friendship Treaty of 1978.
Within days, the Soviets had secured
the capital of Kabul after overcoming
fierce but brief resistance from the
Afghan army.
