Every day, when kids get out of
school, many of them fnd they

I bring this up because a gentle-

a safe, constructive environment
for youngsters in downtown Win-
chester. Game Time Center, as it
will be called, is a family-friendly
gaming center geared toward the
middle school and high school age
group.No,notslotsandblackjack;
the purpose here is to steer them
away from vice, at least for now.

ing systems like PlayStation, Nin-

“What we’re trying to provide,”

for them.” So how will this work?

Of course, all this button-push-

foralready-hungrykids;Iknowthe
frst thing I did growing up when
I got home was eat something. To
that end, Israel says, “We’ll ofer
prepackaged snacks and bottles

opening, Israel says they’ll plan to
operate from either 11am or 2pm
“until about 9 at night. We need
to be sure we’re in line with local

Since video games are more
popular than ever, with several
successful operating platforms and
too many game titles to mention,
it seems that the niche has existed
for some time and is just waiting
for someone to come along with
an idea like this. Te Winchester
City Council is expected to move

School just let out. Where’s your kid gonna go?
The Center will provide a
safe, supervised setting
for middle school and high
school kids to play the lat-
est video games.
The Game Time Center will be at 720 South Braddock
Street, close to Handley High and Frederick Douglass El-
ementary Schools.

Virginia’s Presidential primary,
while lacking the drama of the
other nine states participating in
Super Tuesday’s, did hold some
signifcance in the contest to de-
cide who will take on President

Romney’s challenges in Virginia
were amplifed throughout the
South,wherehefelltoRickSanto-
rum in Tennessee and Oklahoma
and Newt Gingrich in Georgia.
Wins in Alaska, Idaho, Vermont,
and his home-state Massachusetts
will help Romney in the all-im-
portant delegate count but do not
provide him with much in terms
of momentum. However, his ex-
tremely narrow one point win in
hotly contested battleground state
Ohio was a victory that Romney
absolutely needed. While the one
point win does not give him the
knockout blow many in his cam-
paign had hoped for, a loss could
have been catastrophic to his
chances.
Te race now moves south, with
MississippiandAlabamavotingon

win by Romney in either and par-
ticularly in both would absolutely

In all the drama of Super Tues-

after-thought. Te strict ballot

thatapplesareasmuchapartofthe

and McMansions. Turns out that
all these fberglass (what I’ve come
to fnd out) pieces of fruit are part
of a joint efort between the Cham-
ber of Commerce and the Tourism
Board, an efort undertaken in 2005
to showcase local artistic talent in a
decidedly unique medium; namely,
heavyfberglassapples.
Renee Bayliss of the Frederick
County Visitors Center says it just
seemed like a project that needed

Renee, “and she had taken pictures
of all the remaining apples in Win-
chester.” So Renee compiled a one-
page,brochure-type‘rackcard’ofthe
applesandtheaddresseswherethey
are displayed for anyone wishing to
track them all down, a sort of fruity
scavenger hunt around Winchester.
“We were really pleased that a resi-
dent was generous enough to share

From the Visitor’s Bureau, I was
steered over to Impressions Plus

Todd was a member of the Freder-

when the idea frst materialized.
“AlongwiththeTourismBoard,weat
theChamberwerealwayslookingfor

a marketing company in New York
that promoted structures unique to
a given area. Tis being Winchester
andtheShenandoahValley,itseemed
ftting that the apple be the object
we would use.” Indeed, American
Art Parades, who contracted with a

Todd notes, “Winchester was the
frsttowntouseafruit.”
And this being Winchester, it
madesensethattheapplesbecarted
around town during the annual Ap-
ple Blossom Festival parade. “Tat
was a bit of a challenge,” says Todd
with a laugh. “Here we had some-
thing like twenty of these apples we
wantedtoincludeintheparade,and
we had to fgure out how to haul
them individually but together to
maintain some kind of continuity to
the proceedings.” Todd stepped up
and did some networking with local
auto and trailer dealers, who gener-
ously lent the use of their trailers to
aid in bringing the idea to fruition.
“It was something that beneftted
the Festival and the community as a
whole, so those guys really saved us
onthat.”Inordertogettheapplesin
the frst place, Todd and the rest of
the Chamber of Commerce worked
with the Tourism Board to promote

Upon delivery, each merchant could
decide who would paint their apple
and what would go on it. “One in

Free Seniors On the Go Classes at Loving Arms:
We have had a 6 week Art Class program
throughout the summer which has been a great
success!! Te last session began Aug. 9th and
the response had been heart warming and great
fun, says Annette Tait (Art Director). I have
enjoyed meeting more residents of Front Royal
as I am a transplant from Northern Virginia.
We began classes July 5th 2011 in the Great
Room at Loving Arms with 4 students. Since then
the classes have grown, 10-12 individuals. We had a
variety of levels including one participant who has
had her work in Juried Art Show!!
Our main focus is on graphite (pencil sketches),
watercolor, watercolor pencils, pen and ink and
mixed media.
Tis new venture at Loving Arms has been a
huge success with the original 4 students bringing
a friend and spreading the word. We are having a
great time with lots of good conversation, laughs,
along with producing some impressive art work.
Chef Patrick even brought in some goodies for
munching mmmm....
Dear Ryan,
Tank you and everyone at Loving
Arms. My dad loves being there. I
appreciate the care and guidance
provided. Tere is no place better, on
earth for my dad.
  Sincerely, Tim Toepke

Te next public meeting of the
Middletown Town Council will
take place on Monday evening,
March 12th, at 7 pm. If you are
from Middletown, or care about
Middletown, you will want to be
there.Ifthelastcommitteemeet-
ing is any indication, it should be
interesting,tosaytheleast.
Among the issues to be dis-
cussed are the treasurer’s report,
bills, and the police department
report.Althoughthissoundsdull,
itusuallyisnot.Lastweek’smeet-
ingincludeddiscussionsofbuying
the old school in Middletown as
an investment for the town and a
debate about how far below bud-
getthetownactuallyis;itseemsto
be between $60,000 and $70,000.
A written procurement policy is
in the works which, according to
town manager Joan Roche, is ex-
empt from Virginia law because
the town has fewer than 3,500
people.
Teplanningcommissionmeet-
ing on the 19th of March should
be interesting. As readers prob-
ably know, the planning com-
mission continues to work on an
updated comprehensive plan for
Middletown. Mayor Mark Brown
recently accused the planning
commission of not having an up-
datedcomprehensiveplanandin-
stalled a new committee to write
one. Te mayor’s comprehensive
plan is scheduled for a public
hearingonthe20thofMarch.Te

Teacrimonybetweentheplan-
ning commission and certain
members of council continues.
Council asked the commission to
review a proposed crosswalk at

ning commission member Anita
Holley researched the issue and
reachedouttotheChiefofPolice,
the head of the fre department

At the last planning commission
meeting,Ms.Holleyaskedthenew
council liaison, John Blaisdell, to
present the packet she prepared,

posedcrosswalkthatwouldwork,
to council. It appears Councilor

istrator Fred Wharton instead.
My question is, who approved of
the design in the frst place, and
what did it cost, especially since

A sole is a terrible thing to waste . . .
Through Save-a-Sole, area residents, scouts, church groups and school children
have recycled over 72,000 pounds of shoes, sneakers, boots, hats, belts,
backpacks, totes and handbags!
Shoes make their way by sea to the coastal Republic of Cameroon, Africa,
where they are cleaned and refurbished, creating jobs and affordable footwear for
men, women and children who cannot pay for new shoes. (Most of Cameroon’s
supplies come from Europe, making basic necessities even more expensive.)
Some shoes and bags will make their way into the country’s charitable network.
Even with the many U.S. charities which collect footwear, millions of pairs of
reusable shoes still end up in landflls each year. The award-winning Save-a-Sole
program collects shoes, boots, sandals, clogs, etc. in ANY
condition. Just make sure there are two of each!
Cleaning out a closet? Remember Save-a-Sole. It’s a great time to drop off old
shoes, bags and luggage at any county citizens’ site (except
Gainesboro Road); the regional landfll; Frederick County Animal Shelter, Frederick
County Treasurer’s Offce or Total Image & Workingman’s Store on Amherst Street.
Start a group collection. It’s easy. We’ll even pick them up if you like!
Shoes can last for 1,000 years once they’re buried in a landfll!
Save-a-Sole. Because a sole is a terrible thing to waste!

Autographed Baseball
Q:
I have an All-Star baseball
signed by Joe Torre and oth-
ers. I am enclosing a picture and
hope you can provide me with addi-
tional information. — Linda, Richi-
bucto, Canada
A:
I examined the picture, and I
believe the signatures on your
baseball are stamped and not genuine.
Several of the signatures go into the
sewn part of the ball, and they appear
too uniform. I recommend you show
the ball to several dealers in your
region for their professional opinion.
***
Q:
During my husband’s tour
of duty in Europe during
World War II, he purchased some
small wood carvings, two of which
are marked. Would they be of inter-
est to a collector? — Lila, Billings,
Mont.
A:
I was unable to find the marks
you sent me in any of my refer-
ences. This doesn’t mean they have no
value. To determine exactly what they
might be worth, the time has come
to consult a professional appraiser,
and you should expect to pay for this
service. Donald Hull of the Hull and
Allen Auction Group is a local certi-
fied appraiser and might be able to
help you. His contact information is
P.O. Box 31122, Billings, MT 31122,
and www.hullandallen.com.

Q:
I have a 1953 Prairie Farmer
WLS Family Album in excel-
lent condition. What is its value?
— Herb, Lombard, Ill.
A:
WLS Radio signed on the air
in Chicago in 1924. It broad-
cast with 50,000 watts and was a
clear channel. Because of this mas-
sive footprint, the broadcasts could
be heard throughout the East and
Midwest. One of the station’s most
popular programs was the “WLS
Barn Dance,” which originated at
the 8th Street Theater in Chicago. As
WLS approached its 30th anniversa-
ry in 1954, the station published the
souvenir booklet you own. It is worth
about $25.
***
Q:
I have old Archie comic
books from the 1970s, most
with cover prices of 15 cents. They
are all in fair to good condition.
— Joyce, Clewiston, Fla.
A:
Robert Overstreet, author
of “The Official Overstreet
Comic Book Price Guide” published
by House of Collectibles, lists most
Archie comics from the 1970s in the
$1 to $5 range. Condition is extreme-
ly important in determining the value
of comics.

Sick Cat Can’t Stop
Pooping
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My
8-year-old longhaired cat, “Bust-
er,” has gas and diarrhea. He was
given Flagyl for two months with
no improvement. Then he took
three months of probiotics, and no
improvement. Now he gets 5 mg of
prednisone and 5 drops of Rescue
Remedy daily. His butt has been
shaved to help keep him clean, and
I wash it once a day. Buster eats
special cat food, but that doesn’t
help his digestion either. We have
quarter-sized circles of poop all
over the house, and I am breaking
my back cleaning the carpet and
floor. My husband says to eutha-
nize him. What more can I do?
—Pat R., via email
DEAR PAT: Such long-term diar-
rhea is certainly cause for concern,
and I know it can be intensely frus-
trating to care for and clean up after
a sick cat. Please convince your hus-
band to shelve the euthanasia sugges-
tion, however.
Buster sounds like he has inflam-
matory bowel disease (IBD)— a term
that describes a collection of symp-
toms, such as frequent (or constant)
diarrhea, but not a specific cause.
Flagyl is a common treatment for
IBD, as is prednisone. Rescue Rem-
edy is a natural remedy to calm pets.
Buster’s vet should run a number of
tests, if he or she hasn’t already, to rule
out bacterial infection, parasites or a
metabolic condition. If a conclusive
cause isn’t found, you must try and
find ways to mitigate his symptoms.
The change in diet also is recom-
mended in case a food allergy is the
problem. You’re feeding Buster a
specialty cat food, but if it isn’t work-
ing, try other brands or even try mak-
ing home-cooked cat food.
Additional information can be
found online.
