HEC Paris offers an intensive preparatory intensive French course for incoming
international students with beginner to intermediate level.
HEC Paris French School allows students to practice and improve their language skills
to communicate in French. Both oral and written skills are targeted, in order to be
linguistically equipped to effectively perform in personal, educational, and professional
(business) oriented communication situations.
HEC Paris French School is operated on behalf of HEC Paris by the CCI Paris Ile-de-France
French language Centre in Paris.

ELIGIBILITY
All HEC Paris students, as well as their partners, are eligible to participate, provided they meet the entry-level
requirements: Beginners (no previous knowledge in French), A1, A2 or B1.1 level for written and oral skills in
general French.
Entry level is assessed by the Test d’Évaluation de Français (TEF©) test results, or through a self-assessment grid
with a written sample sent via e-mail (see Application Form).

OBJECTIVES AND COURSE CONTENT
To take into account the diverse French levels among students, coherent groups are created, based on the students’ respective skills and capabilities. Courses are available from absolute beginners to B1 level. Different groups of the same
level may be organized in order to keep a reasonable number of students in each group.
The program includes:
› a French language course (45 contact hours) to build up communication skills in order to be linguistically equipped
to effectively perform in everyday and business communication tasks.
› a cultural guided tour (1 afternoon) to discover historical sites and the cultural heritage of Paris “Ville Lumière”.

Training objectives for each group correspond to selected acts of communication in accordance with the main communicative needs of this group.
Group / Entry level 1

At the end of the course, students will be able to…

Beginners interact in a simple way to address immediate and concrete needs: talk about oneself,
Level 0 / A1.1 interact with people, locate in time and space…
Topics: identity, transports, shopping, food, education and training, interpersonal
relationships at work, socio-cultural aspects, etc.
Basic communicate with their immediate surroundings, using simple sentences to describe in a
Level A2.1 short, simple way familiar activities or personal experience: talk about oneself; describe an
object, an event, present an idea; interact in a professional environment…
Topics: hobbies; travel, shopping, food, education and work experience, socio-economic
news, corporate life (organization, roles), intercultural reflection, etc.
Independent 1 interact efficiently in most everyday life situations and communicate in a simple, connected
Level B1.1 way on familiar job-related topics: understand and present facts and figures; organize and
write coherent texts; participate in an interview; present an option/a point of view…
Topics: news and daily life; education and work experience, socio-economic news, corporate life (organization, roles), intercultural reflection, etc.

PROGRAM CHARACTERISTICS AND LOCATION
The 2 week course takes place in Paris at the CCI Paris Ile-de-France French language Centre located at 8, avenue de
la Porte de Champerret in the 17th district. This is an excellent opportunity to discover Paris and learn French before
the beginning of the semester at HEC Paris.
Duration: 8 days (45 hours French Course + Cultural tour)
Dates: Wednesday, August 19 to Friday, August 28, 2015. Bus transfer to HEC Campus on August 29.
To preserve good interactivity conditions, size of the groups varies from 8 to 15 students.

METHODOLOGY
The training is focused on communicative tasks which correspond to socio-cultural or professional topics and to
communication situations of everyday or business life.
The accomplishment of these tasks requires linguistic, discursive, cultural and professional skills. These will be
learned through a wide range of class activities: analyzing written and oral texts, exercising on grammatical, lexical
or discursive structures, implementing newly acquired skills in role-plays or broader simulations, etc.)
The prompts used for the various class activities consist for the most part in authentic documents selected and
gathered from various sources (audio-visual broadcasts or printed press, Internet, etc.) of everyday life or more professional environment.
Successful learning requires personal involvement: participant should be prepared to invest sufficient time and energy during the class as well as in the personal assignments regularly given by the French instructors in between
classes.

TIMETABLE*
ASSESSMENT

Registrations are made on a first come first served basis. However, slots are pre-reserved for students from all
admission sessions.
Step 1: Students already admitted to HEC apply by filling in the on-line Application Form on by May 3, 2015
at the latest.
For students admitted through admission sessions after this date, the deadline is June 29, 2015.
Step 2: Starting from Mid-May, students receive a confirmation of successful application from the French language
Centre together with the final registration form in which they are invited to proceed to the payment of the course fees.
Step 3: Students receive final confirmation of their registration from the French language Centre.

During the course, the teacher monitors the progress made by each student by ways of personal assignments and
regular class-activity observation.
Besides, an evaluation of the acquired competences in the main skills is made at the end of the course. The student’s
final grade is based on the following criteria: new skills, involvement, and attendance.
Official certificates will be issued to each participant who has completed the requirements stated above.

COURSE FEES
HEC Paris offers all students from Grande école and the One-year Masters Programs a financial participation of
50% of the course fees which reduce students’ participation to €350 which includes the French language course,
the course materials, the cultural tour and coffee breaks on training days. Course fees do not include travel to Paris
before the program, or accommodation. Transfer by bus from the CCI Paris Ile-de-France French language Centre to
HEC Paris at the end of the program will be arranged by HEC Paris.

ACCOMMODATION & FOOD
Accommodation is self-organized by the student.
The Accommodation in Paris Guide provides information to find accommodation solutions in Paris, with a night rate
of about €40 to €75 (incl. breakfast).
Lunch and dinner are self-organized by the student. There are plenty of restaurants, bistros and snack bars in the
vicinity of the French language Centre.
Living costs: approximately €100 per day for accommodation, dinner and local transportation (RATP Navigo weekly
transportation card: €21.25 or €14.10 for 10 tickets).
