April 2013
President’s Message
The committee that works so hard each year on One Book One City does a brilliant job! This year, the book was Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. Activities were held throughout the month of February. From speakers to activities for children, there was something for all age groups -- a children’s airplane flying contest, a WWII Historian who reads, writes and speaks Japanese, two Veterans who shared their stories of WWII experiences and a presentation about WWII aircraft. What a great month of activities at our Library! I’d like to thank Sharon & Dennis Murphy, Pat Alcorn, Jane Zamanzadeh, Beth Smith Kellock, Fran Garbaccio, Sandra Dickey, Martha & Darryl Troedson, Alan Leahy, Janet Emery and Connie Wortham for helping at the Friends booth during the Wistaria Festival on Sunday, March 17. We not only sold merchandise and provided informational flyers, but also had a chance to hear from many about their concerns for the Library and support for the Friends. At this time of the year we may often reflect on money, our income taxes, property values and the end of the fiscal year. This is a good time to take stock of what we will need for the coming months, both personally and for the Library. We have just finished one annual fundraiser and are in the final stretch for the next one – the Art Fair on May 4-5. As much fun as our events are, we must keep in mind their purpose -- providing essential revenue for our Library. While our community is a charming and desirable place to live, it is small. That’s part of the reason we love it so much. The size of our community also means that the Friends’ financial support is all the more necessary to enable our Library to provide the practical, useful and cutting edge services that it offers to our patrons. Thank you on behalf of the Board of Directors, the Library Staff and the Trustees for all you do. Darlene Traxler

51st Annual Sierra Madre Art Fair
The 51st Annual Sierra Madre Art Fair, sponsored by the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library, will be held in Memorial Park, 222 West Sierra Madre Blvd, on Saturday, May 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 100 artists will be displaying and selling their fine arts throughout the weekend. Mediums include oil paintings, jewelry, watercolors, glass, wood, metal, wearable art, photography, pottery, ceramics, mixed media, and weaving. The Art Fair will be the place to find that perfect Mother’s Day, graduation, or wedding gift and to buy pieces that you will be proud to wear or display in your home. The Featured Artist this year is glassblower David Van Noppen. His dichroic vases will appear on all posters, post cards, t-shirts, tote bags and other promotional materials. Live music will be featured throughout the weekend in the band shell and on the south lawn. Guests will enjoy an eclectic selection of music ranging from country jazz to Latin to classical flute and guitar. A Food Court will offer a variety of food and drinks provided by local non-profit groups as well as food vendors. And, of course, the Friends of the Library will have a booth selling their famous sweet breads and quick breads. For the children, the Creative Arts Group has planned a Chinese kite making activity on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This year we will again have a Silent Auction. So far, forty of the artists who are displaying and selling their creations at this year’s fair have donated lovely, one-of-a-kind pieces for the auction which means that you’ll have a chance to bid on some really beautiful artwork. So come early and stay all day. Browse through the wonderful displays of artwork, sit on the lawn and listen to music, have a little lunch, check on your silent auction bids, and then go back and purchase those lovely pieces of art that have been calling your name ever since you spotted them. Proceeds from the Art Fair benefit the Sierra Madre Library. For more information, visit our website at sierramadrelibraryfriends.org or call 626-355-7186.

We would like our members to have a voice in this matter. Please vote for your choice. You can email us at [email protected] or call 626-355-6220. Your vote will count. Thank you!

A sincere thank you is extended to our Partners Joan Crow and Margaret & Michael Ellis. Your annual renewals and your commitment to the Partner Program and our Library are greatly valued and appreciated by your fellow Partners and the Friends. We would also like to congratulate Joan for being named The Older Sierra Madre American of the Year for 2013.

It is with great pleasure that the Friends announce the printing of an updated brochure regarding the Mary Tumilty Endowment Fund (MTEF) which was established at the time of Mary’s retirement as City Librarian in 1984 and is now managed by the Friends. Many of you will remember Mary. She was a very positive force in our community and our Library was her main focus. Sadly, she passed away in 2010 at the age of 96. The new brochure offers you the opportunity to remember Mary and her many contributions to our Library and our town - one of which was a recent generous donation from the MTEF toward the renovation of the Children’s Room at our Library. The Friends thank you for your consideration. All donations are tax deductible. Brochures are available at the Library.

Lively roundtable discussions of new and noteworthy books highlight the Third Thursday Book Club which meets at the Library from 11:00 a.m. – Noon. A flyer listing the upcoming selections is available at the Library Service Desk and on the Library website. The April 18 selection is Cutting for Stone, by Abraham Verghese.
Richard and Jeff Ward, of E. Waldo Ward & Son, are featured sharing their favorite books on posters around Sierra Madre. The posters, part of the Sierra Madre Public Library’s READ campaign, convey the simple but important message: READ. Richard & Jeff Ward, father and son, continue to carry on the family tradition started by Edwin Waldo Ward, Sr., who moved to Sierra Madre in 1891 from New Jersey for a better life. His passion was to make the finest marmalade around when he started his company in 1917. Four generations later, the family continues to make tasty treats. Jeff Ward selected Fast Food Nation, by Eric Schlosser, as his reading choice, and Richard Ward’s choice was Southern California Story: Seeking the Better Life in Sierra Madre by Michele Zack. Bookmarks with the photos of the Wards are available at the Library.

THIRD THURSDAY BOOK ClUB

NEW READ CAMPAIGN

Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand, was a popular and successful One Book One City selection in February and the month-long celebration was well attended. We began with the Children’s Paper Airplane Contest, then moved to the WWII Historian, the two Book Clubs, the WWII Panel, and the final program featuring a speaker from Planes of Fame in Chino. Total program attendees surpassed 200! Thank you to the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library, Rotary Club of Sierra Madre, Sierra Madre Civic Club, and Sierra Madre Community Foundation for making One Book One City possible!

ANCESTRY.COM IS YOUR ENTRÉE TO YOUR FAMILY TREE

Here is a book which I bought from the Friends’ Best Used Book Sale. Knowing nothing about it, I simply trusted the gold Winner of the Pulitzer Prize label on the cover and enjoyed every word. This is good literature folks, not ‘brain candy,’ and reminds me a little of the style of John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath. A poignant, thought-provoking read, told through the eyes of Ginny, a farmer’s daughter from Iowa, it is the tale of how all hell breaks loose when her stern, proud Daddy decides to retire suddenly after four generations of industrious, expansive farming. He signs his one thousand acres over to two of his three daughters, mysteriously leaving one of Ginny’s sisters out of the transaction completely. This act sets in motion a series of events, unraveling Ginny’s world-- she then has to confront a dark past, uncovering secrets and painfully revealing the real man behind the façade that she thought was her father. This acclaimed author has other titles available for you to check out, as well as this one, at our wonderful Sierra Madre Library.
