INTRODUCTION
Meanwhile, impressive inroads were being made into the packaged unit
market. This serves as a model of close teamwork between marketing,
manufacturing and product development. Sensing the need, Voltas was
ready by 19!"# with $, ! and 1%"ton models for the summer months
&previously only !"tonners were available'
(s if to underline its pre"eminence in the field, Voltas broke through into
marine air conditioning, previously entrusted only to firms abroad. )o
looking back now. Voltas was ready and an*ious to e*pand its
manufactured range, taking ma*imum advantage of the technical
collaboration with +arrier. +ompressors, chillers and condensers were all
steadily growing in capacity, strengthening Voltas, hand in e*ecuting
pro-ects indigenously.
.y 199"!%, Voltas widened its market to include the nation,s new chemical
and pharma industries, as well as multi"storied buildings and hotels, and
defence industries and pro-ects. Ships, railways, cold storages and dairies
-oined the list by 19!%"!1. /ach such sector was a learning e*perience,
5
adding to Voltas, increasingly substantial and sophisticated knowledge
base in multiple applications.
19!1"!0 saw another pri1e pro-ect2 the air conditioning and refrigeration of
the first 3ndian"made frigate, the 3)S )ilgiri4 with orders for five more
following. Voltas also air conditioned five ships built at the Visakhapatnam
yards. 5ere were laid the foundations of the on"the"-ob pro-ect e*perience
which was to bear fruit in the 6ueen Mary 33 years later.
Move forward one year, and we now have more additions to the list "
telephone e*changes, power houses, chemical laboratories, embassies,
the earth satellite station at 7ehra 7un and the .habha (tomic 8esearch
+entre at Thumba. ( special showcase for Voltas, ingenuity and
technological e*pertise was the mobile aircraft cooler for (ir"3ndia,s
9umbo in 19!0"!:, using the company,s own -umbo"si1ed compressor.
(long a completely different track, Voltas was working with )ational 7airy
7evelopment .oard to design milk"vending machines for ;peration <lood,
and to refrigerate their Mother 7airies.
3t was almost as if in every sector of national advance, Voltas was there,
doing its bit.

<or critical air conditioning applications, Voltas utilises a range of vapor
$ompression products i.e. packaged units, ductable splits, reciprocating
chillers, screw chillers, scroll chillers, semi" hermatic chillers and vapour
absorption machines
