TONIGHT’S GAMES: The Sounds and Colorado Springs Sky Sox (AAA-Rockies) will make up a rained out game from 7/29 then play
tonight’s regularly-scheduled game, which will be shortened to seven innings. Tonight’s games are the 15th & 16th of 16 scheduled meet-
ings between the clubs in 2014; Nashville currently leads the season series, 8-6. The teams split their season series, 2-2, in each of
the previous three years. The Sounds hold a narrow 67-61 advantage in the all-time series since they joined the PCL in 1998. This
evening’s games will be broadcast on the web and will join in progress on 102.5 FM “ The Game” at 5:55 p.m. Jeff Hem is on the call.
WRAPPING UP JULY: The Sounds finished July with a 16-11 record, tied for the 3rd-best mark among PCL clubs. For the third-con-
secutive month, Sounds pitchers paced the PCL with a .233 opponents average and limited PCL batters to a league-low 11 home runs.
Ariel Pena co-led league hurlers with his four wins in the month (six starts) and ranked 2nd with 43 strikeouts (trailing SLK’s Wade
LeBlanc, 44). Among players who spent the majority of the month in Music City, three Sounds batters logged averages above .300:
Eugenio Velez (.333), Hector Gomez (.313), and Kevin Mattison (.306).
LET’S PLAY TWO: This evening’s twinbill is Nashville’s fifth of 2014. The Sounds are 6-2 in doubleheader action this season, splitting
two (versus Omaha on April 5, at Oklahoma City on July 18) and recording a pair of sweeps at Greer Stadium (New Orleans on April 30,
Omaha on May 21). Nashville suffered its last doubleheader sweep on August 10, 2013 at Colorado Springs.
WINNING: The Sounds have won seven of their last nine games and hold a 60-52 record, which is the 3rd-best record in the PCL.
NO-FLY ZONE: Nashville hurlers have allowed only two homers in their last 97 innings of work (just one every 48.5 innings).
TIMING IS EVERYTHING: The Sounds have only 22 wins in their last 62 contests played outside of the Central Time Zone since the
start of the 2012 season (4-10 in 2014; 8-16 in 2013; 10-14 in 2012).
ROAD WOES: The Sounds have dropped 22 of their last 36 road contests. Nashville holds the PCL’s 2nd-best home mark (38-21) but
is just 22-31 when playing away from Greer Stadium, the fewest road wins in the league. Nashville has led in 19 of its 31 road losses.
START ME UP: Sounds starting pitchers have allowed only seven earned runs over their last 10 games (47.2 IP) to boast a 1.33 ERA.
WHOLE LOTTA GLOVE: Sounds pitchers accounted for two errors in the first of yesterday’s two games, while Sounds fielders have played
68 innings of error-free baseball dating back to Hector Gomez’s error vs. Colorado Springs in the 8th inning on July 22. Nashville is tied
for 4th in the PCL with a .980 fielding mark this season (Memphis leads at .983).
RISP-Y BUSINESS: Sounds batters are hitting .396 (90-for-227) with runners in scoring position over the last 30 games.
DEALIN’: The Sounds’ 3.61 team ERA leads the PCL on the year. Nashville boasts the top two individual ERAs in the circuit (recent
call-up Jimmy Nelson is 1st at 1.46, while Mike Fiers is 2nd at 2.62). Sounds pitchers have given up only 69 home runs, the fewest
allowed in the PCL (2nd-fewest allowed is 83 by Oklahoma City).
PUNCHOUT PARTY: Nashville hurlers rank 2nd in the minor leagues with 962 strikeouts (Class A+ Stockton, 982). Sounds pitchers
are on pace for 1,237 K’s this year, which would easily top the club’s current single-season record (1,148 in 2007).
KEVIN KILLING IT: Outfielder Kevin Mattison has multi-hit efforts in eight of his last 15 starts, batting .372 (19-for-51) during that stretch.
‘EU’ IS A-OK: Utilityman Eugenio Velez has a hit in 18 of his last 22 starts, batting .341 (27-for-79) over that stretch. The 32-year-old
ranks 9th among PCL batters with his .318 batting average and leads the team with 31 multiple-hit games. His current seven-game hit
streak (9-for-24, .315) marks his best of the season.
HITTIN’ HECTOR: Infielder Hector Gomez is batting .319 (29-for-91) with hits in 21 of his last 27 games with 15 RBIs and 10 extra-
base hits. The 26-year-old leads the team with 12 homers this season.
CLOSE CALLS: Eight of the Sounds’ last 11 losses have come by two runs or less. Nashville is 31-25 in one- or two-run decisions.
SOUND BYTES: Nashville is tied for 2nd in the PCL with 10 shutout wins (Iowa leads with 11) ... Sounds batters have drawn a league-
low 286 walks (Omaha is 2nd-lowest with 312) ... The Sounds have allowed 88 stolen bases, 4th-most in the PCL (Sacramento leads
with 101) ... The Sounds have turned a league-low 80 double plays ... Sounds starting pitchers rank 2nd in the PCL with 47 quality starts
(Iowa, 61) ... Nashville is winless (0-43) when trailing after eight innings, one of two clubs with that distinction (Round Rock, 0-47).
