Smugglers

Divide a group in half naming one team the "Goodies" and the other the "Smugglers." You'll need a large area like a park or gymnasium to scatter colored hoops on the floor or ground in your playing area. Using bean bags that have colors corresponding to the hoops, give the Goodies a head start to place the bean bags in the appropriately colored hoops. Once they have begun, allow the smugglers to partake in displacing the bags to other hoops while the Goodies scramble to reorder them.

Dodgeball

Dodge ball is a classic game. The game must be played in a large clear area that is free of obstructions or breakable items or fixtures. Arrange two teams and divide your playing field in half with even boundaries. The object of the game is for players to throw large balls--such as a volleyball---across the playing field to strike members of the opposing team, and to dodge the balls aimed at them. If a player is struck by a ball, he is out. The game continues until one team is completely eliminated.

Foursquare

Many active kids' games require a lot of space to play, but not all. Foursquare is a great active children's game that requires very little space. Draw a square out of chalk and divide it into four smaller squares. The squares are given names designating rank, such as ace, king, queen and jack. The person in the ace square bounces a kickball in his square and then hits it into one of the other squares. The person in the receiving square has to let the kickball bounce and then hit it into another square. If the ball hits someone before it bounces, if it bounces twice before he can hit it or if he double hits or catches it, he is out. If the person striking the ball lands it outside of the court, he is also out. If the king, queen or jack gets out, everyone behind him advances a square. For example, if the ace hits the ball into the jack's square, who then hits it back, striking the ace's foot, the ace is out. The king becomes the new ace, the queen becomes the king and the jack becomes the queen. The ace either starts over as jack or, if someone else is waiting, that person gets to be jack. Although this active game is best played with 4-6 players, one foursquare court can easily accommodate 8 or more players; the game moves quickly and the players who are out do not usually have to wait for very long. If they have another

kickball, extra players may prefer to draw a second court and begin their own game instead of waiting.

Capture the Flag

Capture the flag is one of the all-time children's classics and a perfect outdoor game for open spaces. There are many different versions, so it is important that the children agree on the rules before the game starts. Designate a border such as a stream or other natural feature and divide the kids into two teams. Give each team a "flag" (either an actual flag, or some other object that is easy to see and carry) and have each team place its flag within a certain distance of the starting line (50 feet is usually good, unless you have a lot of space.) After three minutes, blow a whistle to start the game. Each team has to try to capture the other team's flag and carry it back. The flag's defenders are allowed to tag anyone coming onto their side. They can watch the flag, but can't get closer to it than a certain distance (20 feet and 50 feet are common). If a flag attacker is tagged offsides, he is taken to jail where he can only be rescued if one of his friends manages to tag his hand without first being tagged. In that case, they both are allowed to return to their side. Gameplay continues either for a set period of time or until one team captures the other's flag.

Voyage Across the Ocean

This game involves small groups of students working together to successfully cross the ocean (the gym floor) using only two rafts (gym mats). The students will be challenged to work together to find a way to get all of their team members safely to the other side without having any members fall into the ocean. To start, divide the class into small groups, with about five to six students per group. Each group will be given two gym mats to use. It is important that the gym mats are large enough for all members to stand on it at the same time. The groups can easily cross the ocean with one simple strategy: have all group members stand safely on one mat, while they move the other mat carefully to the front. Once the new mat is positioned in front, each team member can move onto the new mat. This process will continue until they reach the other side of the ocean. This game is not only fun for children but also allows them to work together to find a strategy to accomplish their goal.

Sink the Ship

"Sink the Ship" is a teamwork game played with two teams of three players apiece. Each team gets one small gym mat that represents its ship. Place the teams' mats 15 to 20 yards apart. Place four plastic bowling pins on the floor in front of each mat. Place 10 foam balls on each team's mat. Each team also receives a pair of 2-foot-square mats. One member of each team moves across the gym floor with the mats by standing on one mat, moving to another placed in front of the first and then picking up the previous mat. Opposing players throw foam balls to stop the player on the mats from advancing. If struck by the foam balls, the child on the mats must return to her teammates and start over. The object is for the player to reach the other side and knock down the opposing team's pins. Each team must critically analyze the safest route across the ocean and learn how to adapt when their plan fails.

Platform Balance

Divide your class into a series of small teams. The size of the teams depends on the difficulty level you want to achieve. Larger teams make this game more difficult. Place a small platform on the ground. The platform should be a square with a surface area of 2 to 3 square feet. Give each team a few moments to plan how it wants to balance on the platform. Each student must stand on the platform for the whole game. Time the teams after they begin. Stop the timer if a student touches the area outside the platform. Repeat the process until each team has gone once. The team with the longest time balancing wins.

Untie the Knot

Play this game with elementary students. Have the class members stand in a large circle. Each student holds hands with the students to his left and right. Shout "tie the knot" to begin the game. Students must continue to hold hands as they move around the room. They should move between each other's arms without ever letting go of one another's hands and get as tangled up as possible. Shout "stop and untie the knot" after 30 seconds. The students must then carefully untangle themselves, without letting go of any hands, until they are back into a circle. This helps promote critical thinking skills as the students will have to analyze the way they are tied up, plan the best way to get untied, communicate this methods to each other efficiently and execute their plan effectively. They will have to react to unexpected problems by reanalyzing the situation and creating new plans and strategies for untying.

Dinosaur Eggs

Pick six players to be "dinosaurs." The rest of the class are "egg stealers." Place 20 tennis balls in a container at one end of a basketball court. The egg stealers attempt to grab as many of the balls or "eggs" as possible to bring them back behind the half court line of the gym. The dinosaurs attempt to tag the egg stealers. Tagged players are out of the game. Bringing back an egg lets one player come back into the game in the order they were tagged. This game utilizes critical thinking skills on both sides. The egg defenders must analyze the

abilities of the dinosaurs and find a weakness in their defense; plan offensive maneuvers, such as distractions or one man raids; execute the plans and alter their strategy when a plan goes wrong. The outnumbered dinosaurs use critical thinking skills to create plans that get the egg stealers out before they run out of eggs.
