e Gar eld County Board of Commissioners, County Manager, and Fair Board of 2013, welcome you to the 75th Gar eld County Fair & Rodeo. We invite one and all to experience the many attractions handpicked for your enjoyment. We hope you have fun during our weeklong festivities! Start with viewing the many exhibits in our Open Class and ne arts area. Travel back in time with our Heritage Night celebration, barn dance and free apple pie and ice cream. Listen to great music at our concert, starring the Charlie Daniels Band and Jack Ingram. Stroll through the Kid’s Corner and the Merchant Village. Take a seat and enjoy the daily entertainment at the “Backstage” behind the bandstands. View the perfection of restoration of 100+ vehicles in the Car Show, before you see cars smashing and crashing at the demolition derby. Be sure to walk by the antique tractors and the Heritage Museum, on display at the fairgrounds, in the North Hall. We take great pride in serving our community, and providing the best fair possible. Gar eld County is celebrating the 75th anniversary Gar eld County Fair – a major milestone for this event, and a tribute to our community and its agricultural heritage. “ e Gar eld County Commissioners are very happy to help with this project and a very special commemorative celebration. ROYALTY 2013
e Gar eld County Fair & Rodeo Royalty program is designed to provide an opportunity for young women to be spokespersons for the Gar eld County Fair & Rodeo, the sport of rodeo, the western way of life and their community of Gar eld County. ere are many events in Gar eld County, neighboring counties and the state of Colorado that o er opportunities for the royalty to connect with the communities and professionally represent our county and fair. e Royalty Program is also designed to prepare the participants to become future leaders of our community thru leadership skills, organizational skills, public speaking and community relations.
Annie McNeel - Queen is from New Castle. She was a 11-year member of the Gar eld County 4-H and a 4 year member of Ri e FFA. She is a sophomore at Northeastern Junior College studying Animal Science and Elementary Education. At NJC she is on the Livestock Judging Team and is a member of Aggies Club. In her spare time Annie likes to show livestock, ride horses and go hunting. Annie has had many champions at the Gar eld County Fair between 2009 and 2012. Annie enjoys working with youth and encourages them to raise livestock. Katy Manuppella - Princess Katy is 13 years old, and attends Riverside Middle School. Her passion in life is basketball, and she loves riding and showing horses. She enjoyed showing goats in 4-H, as well as other livestock shows and jackpots. She’s looking forward to another busy summer with her animals and representing Gar eld County Royalty with her horse, Ted.

Her horses are a main priority in her life. She’s a member of the National Little Britches Rodeo Association. She competes in barrels, poles and trail course. She loves to play volleyball and spend time with her friends and family. In 2012, she placed 3rd in Beef Showmanship, and she is proud of this rst year accomplishement. She considers it an honor to represent Gar eld County Fair and Rodeo as princess. She enjoys singing and has been a choir member for several years. Karly Manuppella - Princess Karly will be in eighth grade at Riverside Middle School, and she just turned 13. Her interests include playing basketball and volleyball, as well as showing horses and livestock. She can’t wait to ride her horse, Skye, as Gareld County Fair and Rodeo Princess in many of the area’s parades and rodeos.

Young buckaroos, their families, friends and the whole community are invited to join the fun and competition Guaranteed fun for the whole family! HERITAGE NIGHT
Join us for Heritage Night, Wednesday, August 7, 4 - 11pm, for an evening of memories and celebration, touching upon the past 75 years of the Gar eld County Fair. e evening begins with a display of strokes from the past. is will include tractors and machinery spanning approximately the last 75 years. e display is possible with the help of Fred Dice from Berthod Motors Equipment, Inc., Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Come and enjoy viewing the machinery of the past and present. At 4:30 p.m., backstage, you are welcome to view the 4-H Fashion Review contestants and performances. At 6 p.m., the Glenwood Springs Vaudeville presents an exciting FREE performance. Directed by Jon Goss, the troupe always delivers an exciting performance. e location is backstage. Spurring on at 7 p.m., Pro Bull Riding will set the pace for excitement with top bull riders. e Professional Bull Riders (PBR) are bucking into the Gar eld County Fair on Wednesday, August 7 at 7 p.m. e night will be lled with rank bulls, high scores and talented cowboys. Gar eld County Fair will showcase some of rising stars of the PBR. ere will be novices and veteran favorites. e competitors will face-o against the most famous animal athletes in the business. What is the Touring Pro Division? e PBR’s Touring Pro Division o ers up and coming bull riders the opportunity to compete in PBR sanctioned events, while earning money to qualify for the PBR’s elite Built Ford Tough World Finals. More than 104 million viewers tune in each year to the PBR on VS, FOX, CBS, NBC, and on a host of foreign networks across the globe. With over 500 hours of prime time programming annually, PBR ranks among one of the most highly-watched sports on air. In addition, it attracts over one million live event attendees each year. JACK INGRAM
When Jack Ingram won the 2008 Academy of Country Music award for “Best New Male Vocalist” thousands of people in the audience had to be smiling to themselves about that whole “new” thing. ey knew the thirty-something, steeleyed veteran accepting that trophy on that stage in Vegas had been rocking roadhouses, theaters and stadiums relentlessly since 1997, that he’d been celebrated by critics and fans of hard-core country music for more than a decade, and that as a Texas-born songwriter and performer, he’d been on the short list of next generation artists who could ll the boots of Lone Star legends, like Willie and Waylon and the Boys. In a time when the music industry tries so hard to jam new artists up to the top of the charts before they’re ready, only to so o en see them plummet back to earth, Ingram’s rise has been slow and steady, fueled by dreams and hopes for sure, but more substantially by high standards and the ambition for a career measured in decades and in uence rather than chart position. He’s in the best place he’s ever been, and it’s clear from a few listens to  Big Dreams & High Hopes  that con dence is bolstering his artistry.

“Few individuals have symbolized the south in popular culture as directly and indelibly as Charlie Daniels.” Encyclopedia of Southern Culture Charlie Daniels is partly western and partly southern. His signature “bullrider” hat and belt buckle, his lifestyle on the Twin Pines Ranch (a boyhood dream come true), his love of horses, cowboy lore and the heroes of championship rodeo, western movies, and Louis L’Amour novels, identify him as a westerner. e son of a lumberjack and a southerner by birth, his music - rock, country, bluegrass, blues, gospel - is quintessentially southern. In fact, even his bent for all things western is southern, because his attire, his lifestyle and his interests are historically emblematic of southern workingclass solidarity with the “lone cowboy” individualism of the American West. It hasn’t been so much a style of music, but more the values consistently re ected in several styles that has connected Charlie Daniels with millions of fans. For decades, he has steadfastly refused to label his music as anything other than “CDB music,” music that is now sung around the re at 4-H Club and scout camps, helped elect an American president, and been popularized on a variety of radio formats.

DEMOLITION DERBY
Hear the roar of the crowd! Feel the excitement all around. Demolition Derby is back for another year. Come and see local drivers crash it out for cheers, jeers and great prizes. e Demolition Derby is held Saturday, August 10, at 7 p.m. in the outdoor arena. Get your cars, friends and family ready for the excitement! History of Demolition Derby Demolition Derbies were rst held in the 1950s at various fairs, race tracks and speedways by independent promoters. As far back as the 1930s, Ford Model Ts, were reportedly used. e sport’s popularity grew throughout the 1960s, becoming a standard of county fairs in rural areas. e sport’s popularity peaked in the 1970s. e demolition derby was originally designed to serve as an amusement, while attendees bought food and beverages from concessions. Vehicles Competitors have traditionally used full-size, American made sedans and station wagons, especially those from the 1960s and 70s. ese were larger, heavier, and had more robust frames than later full-size vehicles. e 1964-1966 Chrysler Imperial achieved near-legendary status for its crashworthiness, and is still banned from most derby events. Scrap vehicles are

purchased from junkyards and private owners. Cars can go for less than $500, but some select (and rust-free) mid-1970s sedans and station wagons may go for more than $1,000. A vehicle may be patched up and re-used for several events. Pit crews work together e ciently to repair heat -winning cars, so they can return to compete in the feature event. Most derbies require that the same car qualifying in the heat must be used in the feature. Occasionally, some derbies allow heat winners to use a fresh car in the feature. From the classic restoration and the 60’s muscle car, to today’s Hi-Tech zoomies, we invite all to participate. We welcome the young people with their Hi-Tech racers and grandpa with his favorite old sedan. For early registrants, there is a $20.00 entry fee. Petting Zoo: Free, $1 for food baggies e magic of any event is watching a child discover an animal previously seen only in books. Noah’s Ark Petting Zoo o ers a complete hands-on experience for both children and adults. We feature a wide variety of animals in our zoo such as di erent types of sheep, goats, llamas, miniature horses, donkeys, cows, chickens, ducks and rabbits. In season, babies can be seen with their mothers. Our sta is continuously available to ensure safety and answer questions. Come to beautiful downtown Ri e, Colorado for the Gar eld County Fair Parade, Saturday, August 10!   e parade will begin at Railroad Avenue and 16th Street, and will head south to 3rd Street at 10 a.m. You will see classic cars, oats, clowns, local businesses and more. It is a county events must see! If you are interested in being a part of the Gar eld County Fair Parade, contact Gina Reece-Long, 970625-2085 ext. 4, at the Ri e Area Chamber of Commerce, or visit the chamber’s  website at  www. ri echamber.com for an application. Once you locate the parade from the event calendar listings, you will need to download the form from there. First, second and third place ribbons will be awarded to each of the ve categories – oat, vehicle, classic auto, marching unit, horse entry – plus two honorable mention ribbons, and the coveted “Best of the Parade”. Entries for the parade received a er August 5, 2013, will be assessed a $10 late fee in addition to the entry fee and oats will be placed at the end of the o cial parade lineup. (No refunds)

e Open Class departments of the Gar eld County Fair give valley residents the opportunity to brag and say, “See what I can do!” Adults and children have the opportunity to enter exhibits in categories ranging from cake decorating to cut owers, from home canning to wood carving. Exhibits are judged on their own merit by a professional judge and ribbons are awarded accordingly. First, second, and third place ribbons are awarded for each class if the articles deserve such merit. Premiums will be paid in each department as follows: Grand Champion - $10, Best of Fair - $6, rst place - $3, second place - $2, third place - $1.

All preserved foods must be processed according to the latest USDA recommendations - refer to the CURRENT recipes, instructions, and guidelines provided by Colorado State University Extension and/or Jarden Home Brands (Ball® and Kerr®). e same is true of all dried foods; refer to publication Drying Foods, Dehydrating Fruits, Vegetables, Leathers and Jerkies. You may reach the Gar eld County Extension O ce at 970625-3969. Any food exhibits may be tested to the satisfaction of the judge. Wine, jellies, butters, jams & preserves, pickles and spice products, and dried products may be opened and tasted. No food item which would not be safe to eat at time of judging or which needs refrigeration will be accepted. Standard canning jars must be used. Canned products must be displayed in canning mason jars, jellies in mason jelly jars, or canning mason jars. Frozen jams must be in see-through freezer containers. 6. 7. 8. 9. General Judging Preservation Guidelines for Food

QUALITY CRITERIA FILLED JAR • Headspace must correspond to instructions on the jar and lid packaging of the reference guides listed. e top of the nished recipe of liquid covering produce should provide adequate headspace as stated in approved guidelines. • Air bubbles must be kept to a minimum. Gas bubbles denote spoilage and identi ed by movement of bubbles to the surface of the product while the jar is stationary. • Bands should remain in place to transport preserved food. Remove bands carefully to determine if the headspace is correct. Replace bands for display. HEAT PROCESS 1. Methods used to heat process foods must comply with current preserving guidelines as stated in the approved reference guides. e boiling-water process for acid foods and steam-pressure process for low-acid foods are the only recommended methods to heat process foods for shelf storage. 2. Times for heat processing preserved foods correctly vary depending on each speci c recipe or food type. Processing times must be in agreement with those listed in the approved reference guides. PRODUCT APPEARANCE • Produce should be free from blemishes, stems, pits, and peels. Some recipes may state stems, pits, and peels are not removed, this is acceptable if the recipe is in keeping with all other preserving guidelines. • Liquid must be clear and free from cloudiness and small particles unless there are ingredients added to the recipe that would naturally a ect the clarity. • Color of the nished product should be as close to its natural characteristics as possible or standard cooked product. • Texture is a ected by heating processing; however, the nished product should not appear over-cooked or break down. • Ingredients should retain their shape and size based on the type and preparation method. Cut pieces, of uniform size, should be packed evenly in the jar, yet allow adequate room for liquid to circulate throughout the jar. • Safety is of utmost importance. Any entry exhibiting spoilage or not in compliance with judging guidelines will be disquali ed. • Avoid decorative jars, padded lids, or fabric covers. Judges will not taste preserved food as part of the Ball® Fresh Preserving Awards.

ENTRANT ELIGIBILITY All eligible entries must be preserved in the same brand of jar and lid: Ball® Jar sealed with a Ball® Lid and Band, or Ball® Collection Elite Lid and Band, or canned in a Kerr® Jar sealed with a Kerr® Lid and Band or Ball® Collection Elite Lid and Band. • Entries in the So Spread category must be prepared using Ball® Pectin: Original, No Sugar Needed or Liquid. e UPC from the Ball® Pectin package must accompany the entry as proof of purchase. • Entries must be labeled with product name, date of preparation, processing method and processing time. • All preserved foods must have been prepared within a one-year (1) period prior to judging date.

Entries close at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 6 (see Open Class Schedule for complete entry times) in the South Exhibit Hall. Judging begins at 12:30 p.m. All entries released between 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., Sunday, August 11, 2013. NO EXCEPTIONS. Two entries per person, per class will be accepted (Example: Exhibitor may enter two loaves of white bread in Class 303). RIBBONS First, second, and third place ribbons will be awarded in each class if the entries deserve such merit. A BEST OF FAIR ribbon may be awarded per department section AT THE DISCRETION OF THE JUDGE. A GRAND CHAMPION ribbon may be awarded in this department if entries deserve such merit. Classes may be combined or created at the discretion of the superintendent or judge.

All general Open Class rules apply. All entries in these classes must be homemade, unless noted. All entries, including cookies, must be placed on disposable plates and covered with plastic or in a zip lock bag prior to being entered at the fairgrounds. All cakes must be placed on a sturdy, covered surface that is 1 – 1½” larger than the cake and covered in plastic. All baked products, except decorated cakes, must be cut and tasted by the judge. All exhibits will remain on display until Sunday, August 11, at 2 p.m.. All entries will be sold in a fund-raiser for the Open Class Department following judging. A representative sample of each baked product (cake, pie, bread) will remain on display. e Gar eld County Fair and its representatives will not be responsible for any lost or damaged personal items such as plates or platters. Entries accepted between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 7 and between 8 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on ursday, August 8 in South Exhibit Hall. Judging begins at 1 p.m. on ursday, August 8, 2013. GENERAL RULES 1. e cookie jar must be of at least one-half gallon capacity with a wide mouth.
