GCA President MAKING SERVICE CALL REPORTS
Dear GCA Members, Chatham & 6th Ward Neighbors: A community based organization When you have to make a service call to report a problem on your block like garbage, street lights out, potholes, abandoned / foreclosed building, street repair, tree cutting and so forth, YOU MUST CALL 311 FIRST––not the Alderman’s office. HERE’S WHY: when you call to make a complaint, 311 will log it into their records. To guarantee that they do this, you have to ask for a “Service Number.” If they don’t give you one––don’t fool around––ask for their supervisor! The Service Number means that the City and Alderman can track why you didn’t get a response. After your call to 311, wait 4 to 5 days, if no response, CALL AGAIN! If you still don’t get any satisfaction, NOW call the Alderman’s office at 773.635.0006. His office can followup on your request because they have your service number and–– they can demand to know what is going on!

The Greater Chatham Alliance is pleased to welcome:
Chicago Police Superintendent
GARRY McCARTHY
Guest Speaker for GCA’s monthly, general meeting
Our entire GCA meeting will be devoted to a serious discussion with Chicago’s new Police Superintendent. He’s tough! He seems open-minded! And we want him on our side–-the Southside! Hear about his early plans to combat crime in Chicago and in the 6th Ward. Our community will also learn how we can aggressively and properly interface with the police to assist them in our fight against crime today. Audience members will also be allowed to submit written questions. But communications starts first with YOU SHOWING UP! THIS MEETING WILL BE AT CARTER TEMPLE CHURCH!
CRIME ANNOUNCEMENTS: From July 5, 2011 to August 11, 2011
Reported to the GCA Safety & Security Committee: We can’t know what’s happening in
our area unless you call us at 773.635.6500 after you call the police. Afraid? We can pass on your crime info for you! WE STILL NEED MORE GCA PATROL VOLUNTEERS! Call 773.635.6500 & volunteer. You can always identify GCA SECURITY PATROL VOLUNTEERS because they’re wearing lime green caps and vests with GCA identification. Show your SUPPORT & SAY HELLO!
Reporting a Crime Incident: B e sur e to call th e 6th District Watch
Command e r's (DWC) Dir ect Phone: 312.745.3610 first when reporting a crime in action––or suspicious people. REMEMBER EVERYONE: A CRIME IN ACTION or SUSPICIOUS PEOPLE! Some neighbors are calling after the crime has been commited–-i.e. like a car stolen. For crimes already committed, you must call 911! If a crime is in action, call the Watch Commander and insist: The 6th District Commander Eddie Johnson said GCA members & Chatham neighbors should call the DWC & 911 to report their crime. Remember, call 911 too! 82nd & S. Wabash Block
––On Thursday, August 11 , around 1:30 p.m., a male senior was standing near his home and was approached by a man who attempted to rob him. In the scuffle that ensued, the resident was shot in the leg. The robber ran & jumped in a car that rd was waiting on 83 street according to a neighbor––it had temporary license plates. Police response was real quick! But does th, that mean they’re fast when there’s a shooting? 81st & Wabash–– on Wednesday, August 10 , a Hispanic lawn worker got robbed. 82nd & S. Wabash Block –– An attempted garage break-in occurred Tuesday, July 26th. Thieves tried to break into the garage and broke the sensors on the garage door. Look, thieves today are really determined. If two neighbors can go into together and purchase a video camera set, that has multiple camera extensions on it, you can set up a camera on each garage with a wide vision coverage on the alley area where the garages are located. This is how a block can formulate real neighborhood solidarity and be cost effective at the same time. Just put the video cameras up very high, or get a small metal cage to put over them so they can't be tampered with. The police have told us time and again, surveillance cameras are a nd determent. 82nd & S. Eberhart Block–– According to the people at the scene, on Friday, July 22 , in the afternoon at approximately, 3 p.m. Two women who had been fighting, earlier in the day, decided to get their grown children involved. Several people were taken to the hospital with minor stab wounds. A young man in the blue shirt was considered a suspect. This happened approximately 100 feet from the Aldermen's office. 85th & S. Rhodes Block–– There was a break-in on th Sunday July 17 at 1:30 in the afternoon. They cut the alarm wires and broke out the bedroom window––then exited thru the back door. This family was new to the block just moving in a week before. What a way to welcome them to Chatham. Please, if a new family moves into a home on your block, be a good Samaritan and share with them some of the community's incidents with crime. Don't let them get victimized because you withheld some information that could secure their family. 83rd & S. Indiana Block–– On Friday, July 15th, between 9 p.m. to 8:41 a.m. in the morning, two (2) more central air conditioning units were stolen from the homes of two neighbors who live right beside each other. As you can see this trend is just picking up speed. What is so crazy about these incidents is that Clarence Collins, the owner of the American Family Insurance firm, at 82nd & S. King Dr., says that the thieves only get $30 for the copper from these units. He also informed us that the Pill Hill area is having the same problem. The stolen central air units have become one of his top insurance claim submissions. We have also learned that some homes as far away as the Beverly community have been hit. So you really need to warn your friends & family members living in the Chesterfield, West Chesterfield, Grand Crossing, Park Manor & Roseland communities what's up. Corner of E. 83rd St. & S. Michigan––The Salvation Church of God was broken into on Monday, July 11th and also on Thursday, July 14th. Food items, soda pop & miscellaneous things were taken on the first hit. When they broke in the church the second time, the thieves took tools & a microphone. 82nd & S. Wabash block th –– A car was stolen in front of a home on Tuesday, July 5 in the morning. No other details were given. Warning: If you or your kids take pictures from your phone? Here is a something you need to know, especially those of you posting pictures to social site such as facebook, twitter, etc. This is one of the reasons you should NEVER enable GPS on your Android phone. Of course that means you will get those irritating messages every other day asking you to enable tracking (and a host of other 'marketing' applications). If you need GPS, ALWAYS use your dedicated GPS box - NEVER the phone! Don't let Google & Apple collect and store your private location information! No matter what Google & Apple say, they want this info to sell to marketers. Also, once collected somewhere on the phone and sent to a server, a professional and/or clever thief can easily hack this info. There is a concern that ALL your other private info (e.g. address, phone number, birthday etc) is sold by these companies; this information is just too valuable for a marketer to ignore. If you have children or grandchildren you NEED to understand how serious this is! You will be surprised about what could happen from taking pictures on the your Blackberry or cell phone.
