Introduction /&ealth for All0 implies both a revolution and decentrali1ation2 demandin chan e in the role of all health professionals at every level of the health care system3 "his concept has far reachin implications for !ursin education and !ursin practice3 Increasin ly2 the nursin profession is faced -ith questions such as4 &o- can nursin services meet the health needs of the society most effectively5 6hat chan es are needed in nursin education5 &o- can the necessary chan es be effected in the best possible manner5 "he revised syllabus has attempted to ans-er these questions2 as they impin e upon basic nursin education3 It has systematically revie-ed and revised the e7istin curriculum of General !ursin and mid-ifery course of three years duration to a three and half years 'iploma course3 Indian !ursin council in collaboration and co)operation -ith nursin e7perts form various institutions of nursin in the country has been successful in revisin the syllabus3 "he revision has ta*en into consideration sound education principles2 chan in educational need of nursin profession and the current health needs of the society3 "he primary objective of preparin and publishin this revised syllabus for the 'iploma in General !ursin and Mid-ifery is to improve nursin care component in all *inds of patient care settin s3 An attempt has been made by restructurin the curriculum to ma*e the e7istin trainin pro ramme relevant to the health needs of the community and country at lar e3 "he revised syllabus is broad and fle7ible in nature3 It has prescribed a learnin environment -hich -ill enable the student to learn complete2 comprehensive and continuous nursin care2 both in hospital and community3 It also enables the student to develop varied s*ills of nursin 3 "his syllabus should be considered as the minimum requirements3 &o-ever2 institutions may reor ani1e the sequence of courses2 units or plans to suit their o-n situations -ithout compromisin the minimum requirements laid do-n by the Indian nursin council3 "he council hopes that the revised syllabus -ill provide necessary uidance in meetin the chan in needs of the students and the community for the ne7t fe- years3

PHILOSOPHY
