Biography and Research Interests
Dr. Carolyn Gotay joined the University of British Columbia in 2008 as a Professor and the founding incumbent of the Canadian Cancer Society Chair in Cancer Primary Prevention. Her charge is to develop an infrastructure for primary cancer prevention that includes research, training, professional and public education, and interface with the cancer care system. She is also an affiliated scientist with the British Columbia Cancer Agency. From 1992 to 2007, Dr. Gotay was a Professor at the University of Hawaii Cancer Research Center, where she directed the Prevention and Control Program. She also served as Director of the Clinical Trials Unit. She was continuously supported over this period through grant awards from the National Institutes of Health, Komen for the Cure, and the Department of Defense. Dr. Gotay received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Duke University and her master’s and doctorate degrees in psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park. She has published more than 100 scientific articles. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, and the recipient of the 2001 Professorship of Survivorship Award from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. She serves as a Consulting Editor for the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Associate Editor for Expert Review of Pharmacoeconomics & Outcomes Research and on the Editorial Board of the Annals of Behavioral Medicine. Dr. Gotay has served as chair or co-chair for the Cancer Survivorship Committee of the Southwest Oncology Group, State of Hawaii Comprehensive Cancer Control Program, National Cancer Institute Cancer Outcome Measurement Working Group, and Mandate Review Committee for the Centre for Behavioural Research and Programme Evaluation. She serves on external advisory boards for University of Hawaii Center for 'Ohana Self-Management for Chronic Illnesses, UCLA Lance Armstrong Foundation Center of Excellence in Cancer Survivorship, University of Texas at San Antonio Cancer Center, and the National Hispanic Cancer Control Leadership Initiative. Currently, Dr. Gotay is a member of the Advisory Council and Primary Prevention Action Group for the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, the National Cancer Institute of Canada Clinical Trials Group, and she serves as Founding Chair of the National Cancer Institute of Canada National Prevention Advisory Committee.
