INTRODUCTION The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based satellite navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather, anywhere on or near the Earth, where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. The three main components are the GPS satellites, the GPS receivers, and the complex computer software needed to decode the signals and compute the geographical position of the user. WORKING OF GPS  Triangulation method

The basic principle inherent in GPS is to determine with the best possible accuracy a point in space, as defined by three coordinates, here geographical latitude and longitude, as well as elevation above sea level. This is done by means of triangulation, that is measurement of triangles. In practice, this involves determining the distances to at least three GPS satellites from the user's GPS receiver. The positions of the satellites in space are known all the time by means of various observational methods and orbital computational methods. When one distance is known, the user must be located on the surface of a sphere with the satellite at the centre and with a radius equal to this distance. With two distances, the location must be on a circle that represents the intersection between the two spheres. With three distances known, two points are possible of which one will be far out in space and can be eliminated. Thus, the point in space has been determined.

Overview of Project
It is web based service offered to selected client. It provides complete protection for car(s) by providing location of the car at any time with pin point accuracy using GPS system. It involves taking in feed from the GPS tracking devices which provide information as to where the car is. This is in turn is converted into simplified information which is presented over a map interface and can be accessed by logging onto a site. Addition services are alerts for over speeding, area entry/exit alerts etc. Technical Information It will be developed using Ajax, JavaScript, php.

WORK DONE TILL DATE
Coded for the login page where user has to enter user name, login id and password. After submission of these details, input details are verified with the existing data base for authentication. If details are not verified it flashes an error message, else it goes to a web page where the user can update the details regarding new GPS devices (if any). After saving the details user can view the list of all the devices and their details.

AGPS tracking unit is a cutting edge technology device that uses the G l o b a l Positioning System to determine the exact location of a vehicle, person, or any other asset to which it is attached and to record the position of the fleet or asset at regular intervals. The recorded location data can be stored within the tracking unit, or it may be transmitted to a central location data base, or internet -connected computer, using a cellular (GPRS) radio or satellite modem embedded in the unit. This allows the asset's location to be displayed against a map backdrop either in real time or when

The GPS technology is presently being used in varied range of services that include military applications. Aside from its important application in the military, there is a wide array of civilian applications for the GPS locator, and numerous advantages to the global users.
