THE NEWSLETTER OF GRACE LUTHERAN CHURC H

Dear Members & Friends, This is the first issue of our new online newsletter. The main reason we are trying this is that the Post Office has enacted new regulations for bulk mailings which are expensive and time consuming for us to comply with. Many churches have already switched to this format just because it’s fast becoming how things are done in the twenty first century. For those like myself who prefer an old fashioned hard copy we will continue to print about 50 newsletters and have them available in the narthex. If not getting your newsletter in the mail makes you cranky and you lash out at someone who doesn’t deserve it, the passing of the peace is a time of reconciliation that is available to you in the worship service. The Lutheran Handbook published by Augsburg Fortress, Minneapolis c.2005, has a great article “How to Share the Peace in Church” on pages 44 and 45. People often ask about how the peace should be shared so here it is from the Handbook: HOW TO SHARE THE PEACE IN CHURCH In Romans 16:16, Paul tells members of the congregation to “greet one another with a holy kiss.” The First Letter of Peter ends, “Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ,” (1 Peter 5:14). 1. Adopt a peaceful frame of mind. Clear your mind of distracting and disrupting thoughts so you can participate joyfully and reverently. 2. Determine the appropriate form of safe touch. Handshaking is most common. Be prepared, however, for hugs, half-hugs, one armed hugs, pats, and other forms of physical contact. Nods are appropriate for distances greater that two pews or rows. 3. Refrain from extraneous chitchat. The sharing of the peace is not the time for lengthy introductions to new people, comments about the weather, or observations about yesterday’s game. A brief encounter is appropriate, but save conversations for the coffee hour. 4. Make appropriate eye contact. Look the other person in the eye but do not stare. The action of looking the person in the eye highlights the relationship brothers and sisters in Christ have with one another. 5. Declare the peace of God. “The peace of the Lord be with you,” “Peace be with you,” The peace of God,” “God’s peace,” and “The peace of Christ,” are ways of speaking the peace. Once spoken, the peace is there. Move on to the next person. 6. Be Aware Safe touch involves contact that occurs within your personal space but does not cause discomfort or unease. We hope you enjoy the new format. See You In Church, Pastor David Almleaf

THANK YOU!
I want to thank the congregation for the wonderful birthday surprise you gave me last month. I was not looking forward to being sixty but you made it special. Thank you for your thoughtfulness, your presence, your cards, gifts and greetings. The Stewarts card came in very handy at the gas pump. God Bless All of You, Pastor David

LENT BEGINS FEBRUARY 13th
The Lenten Season can be made more personally meaningful by committing one’s self to prayer and meditation; and by taking advantage of the worship and study opportunities available here at Grace. Ash Wednesday is going to be kept simple this year and will not include a supper since we are hoping for a good attendance the night before at the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper and Talent Show. Noon Communion will be spoken and will include the imposition of ashes for those who desire them. Evening Communion at 7 PM will be sung and ashes will be available then as well. The Lenten Season can be made more personally meaningful by committing one’s self to prayer and meditation and by taking advantage of the worship and study opportunities that one might not normally. You will not be thought less of for example if you attend an ongoing Bible Study during Lent only. We would be very glad to have you with us.

EASTER LILY ORDERS ARE DUE MARCH 17th
Due to limited space in the sanctuary to place them, we have ordered 24 lilies so it will be on a first come first served basis. Please make your check out to Grace Lutheran Church and return it with your order form. Thank you. A Note From Susan

To My Dear Friends/Extended Family at Grace Lutheran Church, At the end of December, William, Leah and I enjoyed a smooth ride to Florida in time for Christmas and then came were back home by New Year's Eve. We had quality time visiting my brother and family, swimming in their pool, went boating, saw a drive through safari, alligators at a river, and some very nice scenery. Steven stayed home to tend to the sheep, pigs, dogs, cats, keeping the house warm, and doing some handyman work that he's been getting. We kept in touch throughout our trips. Lots happened in January to keep us alert and unfortunately was not stress-free. As we settled back home after Florida, we all had some cold symptoms. This led to some antibiotics for the kids. Then William, during the week of Jan. 8th spit up some blood which meant a visit to the local doctor and ultimately, he was admitted on Jan. 10th to Cincinnati Children's Hospital (CCH) where he and I drove to and stayed at while he was being evaluated. Steve and Leah remained at home to take care of things there. Leah was all set up for her regular treatments. Then I got a call from Steven on the night of the 13th. He asked me if I was sitting down. I did and Steven informed me that Leah will be heading up to CCH. They had been home getting ready for bed when Leah informed Steven that she spit out some blood, then proceeded to the bathroom and spit up more (over a cup). Daddy called 911 and then followed the ambulance to our local Casey County Hospital. They communicated with CCH and made arrangements to be transported up there where I would meet Leah in the emergency room. She was o.k. The bleeding had stopped immediately after the episode, but no one can be too careful in such an event. She was so brave and agreed to go with the nice EMT's while Steven stayed back and we kept contact throughout. The children were both discharged on the night of the 18th (home by midnight). During our time there, both children had a several diagnostic procedures. Under anesthesia, they each had an endoscopy, a bronchoscopy, and a bronchoalveoli lavage, PFT's, bloodwork and Leah an MRI. Much information was collected and insight gained as to what could be causing the bleeding amongst other developments. It was determined that William has gastritis along with 2 blocked airways in his lungs. Leah had a bleed from an esophogeal varices which was banded to prevent that from happening again. She will need to have another one banded about the second week of February. It was determined that the blood flow from her liver to and from her portal vein is not moving properly causing blood to look for different avenues. This is the cause of varices and that she may be beginning to form her own shunt. If this develops naturally, the doctors will hold off on surgically implanting a shunt which they are afraid that Leah is not a good candidate for surgery right now. Still, liver transplant has been mentioned as a possibility in the future. Both children are having low platelets and low white cell counts. Still, it is amazing that they are doing so well. Most of the time you wouldn't even know there was anything wrong. We and many others continue to pray to God, to keep the Father's hands around our children along with His Son, The Great Physician, Jesus Christ. We know the prayers are working. The doctors are amazed at how well they have bounced back from each episode. Still, it is difficult knowing that Cystic Fibrosis is a progressive and incurable, genetic disease, but still, we also have an abundance of hope and faith as God has given the doctors and researchers great wisdom. Many advancements are taking place as we speak. The Lord is holding our whole family up throughout these trials. We praise Him as He is an almighty and powerful God who loves us. It is good to all be home together and getting back into a regular routine. Leah decided that she would like to go to school part-time and began on the 22nd for half days. She is in a 4-5th grade program with some resource classroom help. School attendance is not mandated because of a "home hospital" program, so we'll take each day as it comes. William is doing well and enjoying time with friends he has made in 9th grade. The schools have been very cooperative with anything the children need. They have provided a tutor who comes to the house twice a week to help them catch up academically because of time away from school. We are thankful for such considerate people. We are also enjoying the church and continued to be fed by Brother Hershel's knowledge of the the Bible and his inspiration which we are finding very useful in our everyday lives. I'm enjoying extending my repertoire with new Gospel music accompaniment for the congregants at Thomas Ridge Christian Church. Our greenhouse is flourishing, and even though it is winter, the birds are singing and there's still plenty of greenery. The gardens will be producing before you know it. We're STILL waiting for baby lambs. I guess we miscalculated on the due date. Stay warm and cozy. Best wishes. Happy Valentines Day! With love from, Sue and the Gleeman Family, 1825 Riffe Creek Road, Dunnville, KY 42528, 606-787-6045 [email protected]

GRACE
Many people have expressed an interest in starting a handbell choir at Grace, using the beautiful

handbells that were once a part of our St. James parish. Our goal is to prepare two pieces to be played on Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. ‘Ringers’ do not need to be able to read music, although it

is a plus, and no experience is necessary- we will be learning together! Anyone from 7th grade to adults is welcome to join the bell choir. No supplies are necessary. We will need to rehearse once a

week for an hour and a half starting in February until Easter, which will give us only 7 rehearsals! We will be busy, but I expect it will be lots of fun. If you are interested please complete the application form below and return it to me or Bonnie in the office by Sunday, February 3rd, so that we can schedule rehearsals and get started. Please let me know if you have any questions. I can be reached at 568-2893 (home) or 321-1948 (cell). My email address is [email protected]. Darlene Pollak, Organist/Music Director
