JOP VAN BENNEKOM
Art Director and Editor Jop van Bennekom is the founder of the influential men's
magazine FANTASTIC MAN and the sensational women's magazine THE
GENTLEWOMAN. Always framed by Jop's signature graphic design, the images he
creates always feel specific and precise; created in dialogue and close
collaboration with photographers like Alasair
McLellan, Inez & Vinoodh and Willy
Vanderperre amongst others. Besides
publishing, editing and designing magazines,
Jop van Bennekom works as consulting art
director for various fashion clients, amongst
them COS and Hermès. Jop works and lives in
London.
I really like Bennekom’s style because he lays
out text and pictures simply and it still looks
really affective. Bennekom uses quite bold
titles with bold images contrasted against
quiet writing. Bennekom also uses colour
palettes which complement each other making
his work attractive and interesting.
DAVID CARSON
David Carson (born September 8, 1954) is an
American graphic designer, art director and surfer.
He is best known for his innovative magazine
design, and use of experimental typography. He
was the art director for the magazine Ray Gun, in which he employed
much of the typographic and layout style for which he is known. In
particular, his widely imitated aesthetic defined the so-called "grunge
typography" era. In 1995, Carson left Ray Gun to found his own studio,
David Carson Design, in New York City. He started to attract major clients
from all over the United States.
I really like Carson’s experimental fonts and text layout because they
make the page intriguing as a reader. His distinct style sets him apart
from other graphic designers- especially the text continuing from the left
hand page to the recto. I also like the use of lower case letters for people’s
names and for titles.
