The GRE® General Test
For more than 60 years, the GRE General Test has been the gold-standard admissions assessment for graduate study. As more and more business schools look to diversify the candidate pool for their MBA and graduate management programs, they're turning to the GRE General Test. The GRE General Test measures skills students acquire over a long period of time ² skills that influence a student's academic success. These skills, which are valued by business schools, include:
y y y y

verbal reasoning quantitative reasoning critical thinking analytical writing

Similar to other graduate admissions exams, the GRE General Test contains questions presented in a business context and does not presume advanced knowledge in any specific content area, including business. The test is offered in computer-based and paper-based formats through more than 1,000 test centers in over 165 countries. The computer-based General Test is an adaptive test, providing uniformly precise scoring of a test taker's abilities. For information on GRE test content, review the GRE General Test content overview.

Who takes the test?

In 2007, more than 600,000 prospective graduate school applicants from roughly 230 countries took the GRE General Test. Applicants come from varying educational backgrounds and countries, and the GRE Genenral Test provides the only common measure for comparing their qualifications.
Who accepts the test?

The GRE General Test is accepted at more than 3,100 accredited graduate, business and professional schools, as well as departments and divisions within these schools. Admissions and fellowship panels use GRE® scores to supplement undergraduate records and other criteria for graduate study. Scores provide common measures for comparing applicants' qualifications and evaluating grades and recommendations.

Accepting the GRE® General Test Is a Good Business Decision
Today's competitive global market calls for more creative and diverse business leaders. The GRE General Test can help business schools answer that call by increasing the quality, quantity and diversity of the applicant pool. Compared to other leading graduate admissions assessments used by business schools, the GRE General Test:

The Computer-Based Test is an Adaptive Test

Questions on computer-adaptive tests are customized for each test taker based on his/her individual performance. The Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections of the computerbased GRE General Test are dynamically generated based on a test taker¶s answers to previous questions.

This test design provides precise information about each candidate¶s abilities using fewer test questions than traditional paper-based tests. At the start of the test, the test taker is presented with test questions of middle difficulty. As he or she answers each question, the computer scores it and uses that information, as well as his or her responses to preceding questions and information about the test design, to determine the next question. As long as the test taker answers correctly, he or she will typically be given questions of increased difficulty. When the test taker responds incorrectly, he or she will typically be given less difficult questions. Because the computer scores each question before selecting the next one, the test taker must answer each question when it is presented. For this reason, once the test taker answers a question and moves on to another, he or she cannot go back and change his or her answer. The computer has already incorporated both the test taker¶s answer and the requirements of the test design into its selection of the next question.

GRE® General Test Scores
The GRE General Test reports scores for 3 skill areas: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing. Interpretive data and scoring process reports are available.
Skill Verbal Reasoning Score Scale 200-800, in 10-point increments

Quantitative Reasoning200-800, in 10-point increments Analytical Writing 0-6, in half-point increments

Any section in which the test taker answers no questions at all is reported as a No Score (NS). Learn more about the content covered on the GRE General Test.

Don't miss this opportunity to hear from graduate schools that are searching for students like you. The GRE Search Service matches prospective graduate students with participating graduate schools and fellowship sponsors. If you match the recruitment profile of a participating institution/organization, you may be sent information about graduate programs, admission requirements, financial aid opportunities, fellowships, and other graduate education opportunities. You will be given the option to be included in the Search Service when you register for a GRE test. Anyone considering graduate study, whether or not they are registered for a GRE test, may also register for the GRE Search Service. To register for the GRE Search Service only, use the online GRE registration form. When you register for a GRE test, or if you participate in the Search Service, you will be asked to provide background information about yourself. This information is collected for analysis samples, score interpretation data, group statistics, and research studies. If you register to participate in the Search Service, your background information, contact information, and the broad score bands in which your test scores fall will be added to the GRE Search Service database so that participating graduate schools and fellowship sponsors can locate you. Participating graduate schools and fellowship sponsors are now able to search the database on broad GRE score bands in combination with undergraduate grade point average (UGPA). The score bands for the Verbal measure, Quantitative measure, and the Subject Tests are 90 points or greater (e.g., 600 to 690) and the score bands for the Analytical Writing measure are a half

point or greater (e.g., 4.5 to 5.0). Information on broad score bands or individual GRE test scores will not be part of the output provided to Search Service users. Information provided to participating schools about you may include any of the following:

personal information: address, gender, ethnic background, citizenship status, telephone number, and e-mail address educational background: current educational status, undergraduate institution name, UGPA, undergraduate major, and date of graduation educational objective: field in which you plan to do your graduate work, preference of fulltime or part-time graduate study, degree objective, preferred geographic region for graduate study, and intended date of enrollment in graduate school.

Information collected by Educational Testing Service (ETS®) for use in the GRE Search Service will be transferred to Hobsons®, a leading provider of educational solutions. Hobsons is responsible for administering and marketing the GRE Search Service as directed by ETS. By participating in the GRE Search Service, you authorize the transfer of your personal information to Hobsons for the purposes described above. Register early. Test centers fill up quickly. Take the test as soon as possible so your scores will be received by the college or university of your choice in time to be considered with your application. When registering, be sure that the spelling of your name matches the name printed on the identification document(s) you will present at the test center. If this information does not match, you will not be permitted to test and your test fee will be forfeited. See Identification Requirements. Information regarding test center availability is subject to change. The most current information regarding test centers, dates, and other registration information is available in the GRE® online registration system for the computer-based General Test and the paperbased General Test. Although you will be asked to select a desired test date and test center during the registration process, your testing information will not be confirmed until your registration has been processed. You should receive your admission ticket about three weeks after you register. If you do not receive your admission ticket at least 10 days before the test date, please contact ETS® immediately to confirm your test center assignment. Late registration is available if you register online. Late registration closes one week after the regular registration date. The fee is $25.

Repeating the General Test
y

It may be to your advantage to take the GRE® General Test more than once if you think that the scores you obtained do not reflect your true abilities. If your scores seem unusually low in comparison with other indicators of your preparedness for graduate studies, you may want to consider taking the test again. Those considering repeating a test should be aware

y

that large score increases are unusual, and for some test takers scores will go down. Keep in mind that score reports will include test results obtained within the past five-year period. You may take the General Test (computer-based and/or paper-based) only once per calendar month and no more than five times within any 12-month period. This applies even if you canceled your scores on a test taken previously.
