The Great Gatsby Chapter 8 1. Gatsby house was eerily quiet and the ³rooms were musty, as though they hadn¶t been aired for many days´ (148). Earlier in the novel, it was always so festive and elegant, because Gatsby was trying to win over Daisy. Now that Daisy seems she is going to stay with Tom, Gatsby has given up on trying, and his house now seems lonely and quiet. 2. They loved each other, but when Gatsby went to the war, he left Daisy alone. She moved on, and when Gatsby finally returned for the one girl he had always loved, she was on a honeymoon with Tom. And from that moment on, Gatsby dedicated himself to winning her back. 3. Gatsby was ³surprised to find out [he] loved her´ so quickly after meeting her (150). He knew she was always going to be the one for him, and he wouldn¶t stop until they were married and together forever. When they first fell in love, Gastby ³felt married to her ± that was all´ (149). 4. Fitzgerald describes it this way to show the reader how much Gatsby loved Daisy, but also to show the reader the fantasy world he lived in. He felt after 4 years he could come back and Daisy would still be waiting in Louisville for him, a poor young man, But reality was different, and she moved to Tom, a wealthy man who any lady would want to marry. And Gatsby was so in love and crazy about Daisy, he tried everything to try to get her back. 5. He doesn¶t respect Gatsby. But he respects him more than the East Egg-ers because he is honest with those around him, and he puts all the blame on himself for the murder of Myrtle, unlike the others, who don¶t seem to even care. Nick feels badly that Gatsby dies because he was the least deserving out of all the characters to receive the fate he did.
