Great Gatsby Chapter 6
Laudable - deserving praise and commendation “Just short of being news…” JAMES GATZ “He was the son of God…” -Gatsby always thought highly of himself (?)

Meretricious - apparently attractive but having in reality no value or integrity “He unvented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen year-old boy would be likely to invent…” -Young and naïve, he invented this magical character that was rich and charismatic, got everything he ever wanted. Contemptuous - showing contempt Ineffable - too great or extreme to be expressed or described in words. -He wanted to be like Dan Cody, rich and successful and able to float through life leisurely. -Gatsby seems on edge around Tom, even though he has a right to. Telling Tom he knows Daisy only meant that Gatsby was letting Tom into one of the many secrets of his life, and then pulling away quickly. Tom will start to suspect things between Gatsby and Daisy. - Tom+Daisy at Gatsby’s party = JUST NO. How can Gatsby expect to woo Daisy with Tom there? Hitherto - until now or until the point in time under discussion.

-Daisy prefers glamor to simplicity. Not mindless Hollywood glamor, but deep, educated New York Glamor. I think Daisy would rather live on West Egg than East Egg, where the parties are actually fun. Despite what Nick says. -I think in his mind, Gatsby is still the seventeen year-old boy who created this fake persona for himself. He’s trying to create an imaginary life within another, his life with Daisy inside his life as Gatsby. -Nick is very right when he says Gatsby should go back to the point when he met Daisy and work his way through everything that happened since, just more slowly. Gatsby immediately came up with the idea that he and Daisy would be married, and didn’t consider any alternatives. -Nicks perception of Daisy is more real to him than the actual Daisy.
