Home Remedies for Premature Greying of Hair Indian Gooseberry
The use of Indian gooseberry is the foremost among the home remedies found beneficial in the prevention and treatment of premature greying of hair. This is a valuable hair tonic for enriching hair growth and hair pigmentation. The fruit, cut into pieces, should be dried, preferably in shade. These pieces should be boiled in coconut oil till the solid matter becomes like charred dust. This darkish oil is very useful against premature greying. The water in which dried indian gooseberry pieces have been soaked overnight is also nourishing for the hair. This water should be used for the last rinse while washing the hair. Massaging the scalp every night with a teaspoonful of indian gooseberry juice, mixed with a teaspoon of almond oil and a few drops of lime juice, also proves beneficial in the prevention and treatment of premature greying of hair.

Amaranth
Amaranth is another effective home remedy for hair disorders. Application of the fresh juice of the leaves of this vegetable helps the hair to retain its black colour and prevents it from premature greying. It also helps the growth of the hair and keeps it soft.

Curry Leaves
Liberal intake of curry leaves is considered beneficial in preventing premature greying of hair. These leaves have the property of providing vitality and strength to hair roots. New hair roots that grow are healthier and contain a normal pigment. The leaves can be used in the form of spicy condiment, or may be squeezed in buttermilk. When the leaves are boiled in coconut oil, the oil forms an excellent hair tonic to stimulate hair growth and bring back hair pigmentation.

Ribbed Gourd
Ribbed gourd boiled in coconut oil is also an effective remedy for premature greying of hair. Pieces of this vegetable should be dried in the shade. These dried pieces should be soaked in coconut oil and kept aside for three or four days. The oil should then be boiled till the solid is reduced to a blackened residue. This oil should be massaged into the scalp. It will help enrich the hair roots and restore pigment to the hair.

Butter
The butter made from cow's milk has the property of preventing premature greying of hair. A small roll may be taken internally and a little quantity may be massaged into the hair roots twice a week.

Coconut Oil & Lemon
Mix coconut oil and a dash of lemon and massage you head with the mixture daily, for about 15 minutes. The recipe is known to be very beneficial for treating grey hair and also gives long term benefits in terms of texture, strength as well as length of hair. There are instances of people having black hairs even up to the age of 60-70 years by using this method.

Almond oil
Massage of the scalp with almond oil is recommended.

Aromatherapy
The simplest method is to massage essential oils into your scalp every night. For dark hair, try rosemary, thyme or sage. For lighter hair, try german chamomile or lavender. Put 2-3 drops of the oil on your palms and rub into your scalp every night. This will help condition the skin of the scalp.

Rosemary & Sage
Take 1/2 cup of rosemary and a similar amount of dried sage. Boil both the ingredients in 2 cups water, for about 30 minutes. Let the mixture sit for 2-3 hours. Now, apply it throughout your grey hair and allow it to dry. Once dry, shampoo your hair. Repeat the procedure on weekly basis, until you see your hair getting the desired shade. Keep applying the mixture for another month, for maintenance.

Herbal Rinse
Herbal rinses are another way to reverse gray hair. For dark hair, choose one or more: Rosemary Sage Raspberry leaves Parsley Ivy Berries Catnip Black Tea Black coffee (just make strong black coffee and use this as a rinse) For blond or light hair: rosehips red hibiscus calendula saffron

marigold tumeric mullein privet yellow broom Choose some herbs from the lists above and put about 1/2 cup of dried herbs/flower/berries in 2 cups of water. Simmer for 30 minutes and then let it sit for another 2-3 hours. You will have a very strong "tea" for your hair. Strain out the vegetable matter and pour it on your hair after shampooing. Let it sit for several minutes and rinse out. Gradually you will notice your hair color changing.

Potato
For dark hair, boil 1 unpeeled potato. Cool the water and massage the potato-water onto your scalp and into your hair with a cotton ball. Leave it for 20 minutes and then rinse out.

Rum
4 tablespoons of dried sage 1 water 4 teaspoons of rum 1 ounce glycerin A few drops of vitamin E Boil the sage in the water and let it sit for 2 hours. Strain it and add the rest of the ingredients. Use some cotton and rub this darkening concoction on your scalp every day. Gradually your hair will get darker.

Ayurveda Q&A: Home remedies for premature greying

1. i am 21 yrs old. i have premature greying in my hairs. would like to know can it be treated? can the grey hairs Priyanka Yes, It can be treated with Ayurveda therapies and medicines. Basically Ayurveda calls it „Kalithya‟ – Premature grey or whitening of black hairs. This condition is due to vitiation of pitta dosha. Premature graying is caused by emotional disturbances, anger and over physical exertion .The hair color changes according to the vitiation of dosha.Hair color is produced by tiny hair pigment cells within our hair follicles called melanocytes. As we age, the activity of these melanocytes gradually declines until they stop making pigment. New hairs grown in without pigment, resulting in gray hair. Causes be converted back to black?

Inadequate nutrition (deficiency of vitamin B, iron, copper and iodine in daily diet), Hereditary, Stress, Unhealthy scalp, Scalp which is not hygienically maintained, Using harsh shampoo, soaps and other hair styling accessories, Blow drying etc

Following are the common underlying causes for this condition. a. Thyroid disorders, hyperthyroidism, and hypothyroidism have been linked with premature gray hair.

b. Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia. It can be due to a diet low in vitamin B12, which is found mainly in meat, eggs, and milk. It can also occur if the stomach can‟t absorb vitamin B12, due to surgery involving the stomach or small intestine (such as gastric bypass surgery), diseases that affect the small intestine etc.

c. Vitiligo. A condition in which your skin loses melanocytes, resulting in very light patches of skin and possibly premature gray hair d. Early menopause

e. Smoking. Cigarette smoking has been linked to premature gray hair.

The following home remedies are very effective:

a. Six drops each of bay and lavender essential oils can be added to four ounces of sesame oil or soybean or almond oil and massaged into the hair roots.

b. Herbs like Sage and Rosemary have been proved to be effective in treating premature graying. Jojoba oil being hypoallergenic promotes hair growth, hair coloring and regulates dandruff problems.

c. Aloe Vera helps in healing the scalp, balances the PH level of the scalp and cleans the pores. A mixture of Aloe Vera gel with wheat germ oil and coconut milk promotes hair growth and hair color.

d. Amla or the Indian gooseberry is an excellent tonic for premature graying of hair and preventing hair loss. Cut a few Amla fruits into pieces, dry it in shade and boil in coconut oil until the solid matter is well cooked and appears dark in color. This oil when massaged into the scalp every day is the best medicine for premature graying of hair. e. Even the water in which a few dried pieces of Amla are soaked overnight can be used for rinsing hair. This is very nourishing and helps prevent premature graying. Also massaging Amla juice, mixed with almond oil and few drops of lime juice every night is found to be beneficial in treating premature graying of hair.

f. Adding curry leaves to one‟s regular diet has proven to be beneficial in treating premature graying of hair, as the curry leaves add strength and vitality to hair. Curry leaves can also be boiled in coconut oil and applied regularly for healthy hair.

g. Finally, Henna, the traditional herb found in India is a good hair conditioner and is the best way to healthier hair. Heat 250 milliliters of coconut oil in a pan, and add 3-4 Indian gooseberries cut into pieces. Heat until the gooseberries turn dark brown or black. Use the oil for a hair massage 2-3 times a week. Take 1 cup of curry leaves and grind them with 1 cup of buttermilk. Apply this to the hair for 1 hour, and then wash the hair with an herbal shampoo.

How I stopped my hair loss.
Hair loss is scary, embarrassing and hard to fix. As a 20 year old who has already suffered through severe hair loss, I know the anxiety and shame that can come from losing your hair. Over the last year, I have tried many different things to stop my hair loss, and finally after months of searching, researching, visiting doctors (Chinese and Western) I have finally been able to stop my hair loss, and encouragingly I have seen new growth. So what causes premature hair loss? Hair is one of those non essential parts of the body, meaning that if your body is under stress or pressure from a variety of different things, your body will compensate by focusing on keeping you alive and healthy rather than having a full head of hair! It could be because of a wide range of reasons, which will be outlined below:



Vitamin D deficiency: Because most people spend their time in doors, behind a desk or on the couch, a surprisingly high percentage of the population have insufficient levels of vitamin D in their body (Vitamin D is synthesized in the skin through exposure to UV rays.) Studies have shown that low vitamin D causes hair loss. Too much vitamin D: High levels of Vitamin D can also cause hair loss, which is why it is important to have the right balance of vitamin D. Iron deficiency: Iron is important for your hair, nails and skin. Too little can cause hair to fall out, or make the hair follicles smaller so your hair strands end up being thinner. Calcium deficiency: Calcium is also important for your hair, and if you are not getting enough Vitamin D (which is needed for absorbing calcium) Your hair will also fall out. Stress: Stress causes hair loss, this is widely known, and seeing your hair fall out can just add to that stress. Hair usually falls out 1 - 4 months after the stressful incident has taken place. Lack of sleep: If you are not sleeping well, this can also have a negative effect on your hair. The type of shampoo you use: The type of Shampoo you use may also be making your hair fall out. Natural shampoos are much better for your hair and scalp than chemically based ones. Food allergies: Food allergies, especially to dairy can cause your hair to fall out. Coeliac (or Celiac as it is known in the U.S) disease: It is not widely known that hair loss is a symptom of Coeliac, which means the small intestine cannot break down gluten, and ingredient found in bread, pasta, wheat products etc. Coeliac can also cause hair loss.

How I 'cured' my hair loss: Being so young, and losing hair is scary, especially if you try and sort the problem out yourself. There are so many websites explaining hair loss, and they all seem to say different things. This is the step by step guide to how I cured my hair loss: 1. Approximately 1 year ago, I found that I was leaving many strands of hair on my pillow each morning, and every time I dried my hair with a towel, the towel would be covered in hair. Even running my hand through my hair meant losing at least a few strands, so I went to see my doctor. 2. My doctor asked if I had any family history of hair loss, and I told him that my father was bald (Although everyone else in my family has a full head of hair!) He prescribed me 2 medicines, one was a topical applicated (Rogaine) and the other was a pill (propecia.) 3. I took the medicines for a couple of months and applied the lotion, but I didn't see any benefit and discontinued taking the medicine. I went back to the doctor and the doctor said the hair loss could be hormonal/due to stress and that I should wait a while to see if it went away by itself, it didn't. 4. I started to research online about hair loss. I found out that vitamin deficiency is a leading cause of premature hair loss, so I started to take a multivitamin. To my surprise, it worked slightly, as the amount of hair that I lost decreased, but I still had hair loss. 5. I started to research vitamin deficiency, and found out that there are a few main causes of vitamin deficiencies, including leaky gut and coeliac, both of which cause the small intestine to basically attack itself, resulting in the mal-absorption of vitamins and minerals.

6. I started a strict diet, which involved no wheat, gluten etc, (There are alternatives for all these, including tasty cakes, breads etc which you can find in your supermarket.) 7. I also found out that dairy intolerances can also lead to balding. Since my dad has always suffered from IBS, (Irritable bowel syndrome) I tried quitting dairy too. Overall, after these dietary changes my overall health improved and my hair fall slowed considerably. 8. After more research, I found that sufferers of coeliac (Which i now know I have) are usually deficient in calcium, vitamin D and Iron, so I started to take daily supplements of these. After only a few weeks, my hair loss stoppedcompletely. What I learned from my research: Hair loss is a sign that there is something wrong with your body. Rather than try to fix it by using hair loss shampoos and medication, try things such as your sleep patterns, alcohol intake, and even diet. It's not what you put on, but what you put in your body that really makes a difference. Another important thing is to learn how to control stress. Seeing your hair fall out is really stressful, especially if you are young, but it is important to learn how to relax as this will also help in reducing your hair loss. On Head and Shoulders: There have been rumors flying around the internet as to whether or not Head and Shoulders has an influence on hair loss. Personally, I was using Head and Shoulders Hair Retain for Men, for a couple of months. After I started taking the vitamins, and changed my diet, I could still feel that my scalp was itchy, and a few hairs were still falling out from the top of my head. I decided to stop using Head and Shoulders and switch to a more natural shampoo (I now use Loccitane, which can be purchased from department stores) and my hair loss stopped completely. I can't say definitely whether or not it was because my body was still recovering, or whether it was in fact because I stopped using that brand of shampoo, but I can tell you that after switching shampoos my scalp is a lot healthier, and my hair a lot healthier! This may not help everyone, but it worked for me, and I hope that by writing this I will be able to help at least one other person beat their hair loss! The problem with hair loss begins when new hair does not grow fast enough to replace the normal daily loss caused by the body‟s fluctuating rhythms and hormonal levels. As the thinning process continues, new growth stops altogether in certain parts of the scalp. Most permanent baldness is due to a common hereditary condition – sometimes combined with other factors such as stress, poor diet or poor circulation – that affects men more than women. Thinning usually begins at the temples and the crown, and can start as early as the teens, although it is generally most noticeable in middle age. Hair loss is often slow and all the hair is seldom lost. Women are rarely as severely affected, and usually not until after the menopause. What causes hair loss?



Temporary baldness or loss of hair can be caused be anaemia, a deficiency of the thyroid hormone, scalp infection, illness, pregnancy, seasonal changes or drugs such as the contraceptive pill, steroids or various antibiotics.



Alopecia, a sudden and generally temporary, patchy loss of hair, can occur in men and women, boys and girls, at times of stress. The hair usually regrows, but the colour may differ. This form of alopecia may occur as a side effect of cytotoxic (anti-cancer) drugs and radiotherapy. Generalised alopecia in which all the hair drops out and does not regrow, is rare.

 

50% of persons afflicted with Hyperthyroidism exhibit diffuse hair loss in which the scalp hair becomes fine and soft, whilst 1 – 2% of persons afflicted with Hyperthyroidism suffer from Alopecia Areata. A deficiency of vitamin A may cause hair to become dull, dry, and lustreless and eventually fall out. However, an excess of vitamin A may cause similar problems.

Therapeutic recommendation: Naturopathy:

    

To improve your general health, try eating a wholefood diet rich in protein foods such as pulses, fish, lean meat, eggs, cheese and nuts – and a cup of fresh lettuce juice every day may also help. Vitamin C found in fresh fruits and vegetables such as citrus fruits, broccoli, green pepper, and parsley is good. Coping with stress and learning to relax will also help. Supplementation with brewer‟s yeast, vitamin B-complex, zinc, vitamin C and kelp is beneficial. Improve you circulation by taking regular outdoor exercise and stop smoking.

Traditional medicine:

  

Rural people use an infusion of the leaves of the Cape Willow to stimulate hair growth. A recipe, used for the same purpose, consists of an oil brewed from these leaves, maiden hair, fern leaves, cloves, nutmeg, brandy and maize or sunflower oil. You can also try massaging your scalp with warm almond oil. Leave for an hour, then wash out.

Aromatherapy:



Mix five drops each of sage and rosemary essential oil in 30ml of jojaba oil and massage a sprinkling firmly into the scalp every day. Keep the fingers in the same place and rub so that you feel the skin moving over the bone beneath.

 

Use a shampoo containing tea tree oil (topically of use) and add a few extra drops of tea tree oil. You can add jojaba oil and rosemary essential oil to your shampoo but be careful not to shampoo too often..

Homeopathy:

 

Lycopodium is said to help premature baldness and greying – take the 6X potency twice a day for a month. Hair loss caused by childbirth or at the menopause, and accompanied by feelings of indifference to loved ones, may be helped by Sepia 6X a day for a week.
