This app was developed by two clinical
psychologists based on principles and
techniques of cognitive behavior therapy
(CBT). CBT has demonstrated effectiveness
with various populations, and has an
established evidence base. With the four
features within this app, this is very valuable to
a counselor and a client. Since the majority of
a client’s life is spent outside of counseling and
counselors are to assist clients to be
autonomous and self-sufficient in managing
their own lives while “leaving no footprint” as
Insoo Kim Berg said (Ratner, George, Iveson,
2012), this app is almost all encompassing to
help clients to do such. The moodkit activities
section contains specific steps, tips, and
techniques to reduce negative feelings and
increase well-being, which could be used by
the client outside of session and reported to the
counselor within session to enhance treatment
as a supplement. The thought checker tool can
assist clients in identifying, catching, and
modifying thoughts attributed to the feeling in
the moment. This can be used in and out of
session, with the possibility of role plays with
client and counselor during face to face
meetings. The mood tracker and journal
components of this app are particularly helpful
for the counselor. The counselor can see how
the client’s mood fluctuates by the mood
tracker, with the linked triggers and thoughts
via a narrative provided by the client within the
journaling piece. In, and potentially out of
sessions with the export and email ability, the
counselor can have access to all this rich data
to help to be more effective in working with
clients who use this app regularly. This
information will be critical in planning
interventions, treatment plans, and
understanding the client’s unique worldview.

($4.99 – iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch)
Applicability to CSL: Practice.
This app would be useful for
counseling and other professions
during the intake and following
sessions. This can be used initially
to create an outcome measure by a
prescreening, then middle, and a
post screening to determine
successfulness of counseling or
other interventions. This can be
used to help determine treatment
progress and planning. For
example, if the results are severe
indicating possible harm to self, a
referral to the hospital through a
temporary detention order (TDO –
Virginia) or Baker Act (Florida)
could be made if the counselor
deems necessary. This app can be
used directly in the here and now
with the client in the room. If the
client has difficulty reading or
writing, or if the writing is not
legible, this could be an important
tool to help gain insight. This can
also be a good rating tool for the
client to use at home, thereby
gaining insight into possible
triggers of depression and
exceptions to the depression
which can be brought into the next
counseling session and processed
by the client and counselor. The
pro version offers the counselor
the opportunity to have multiple
assessments from many clients,
which can be essential for
counselors working with a high
caseload. Since the current trend
in mental health and the medical
field is creating electronic
databases of personal health
information, this could be an asset
in meeting the current best

This journal has various purposeful uses
for counselors and clients. First, this can
be used to help track thoughts,
behaviors, and actions to assist the client
and counselor in gaining insight into the
clients concerns and/or problems.
Secondly, this can be used as a cathartic
medium for clients who are having
difficulty with racing thoughts or high
anxiety. Metaphorically, this can be
taught to clients as getting thoughts off
of their mind. This can be used as a tool
for clients outside of the counseling
room. Since clients spend most of their
time outside of the counseling room, the
counselor would be greatly benefitted by
this information the client brings into
session from journaling their
experiences. This can be linked to
specific triggers clients have, wherein
after an unpleasant experience of
whatever the cause, the client can journal
this to assist in the treatment process and
treatment planning. With the current
uncertainty in the counseling field about
electronic record keeping and electronic
communication, the passcode lock on the
journal is a wonderful feature to help
keep records confidential.

conditions such as anxiety,
bipolar dx, depression,
insomnia, treatment plans for
therapy, as well as medication
usage and effects. (Free – iPad,
iPhone, iPod Touch)

Applicability to CSL: Self-Care &
Practice.
This could be a useful app for counselors.
By the feature of mood tracking added to
the journal, this is a great supplement and
tool for the counselor. This will help the
counselor gain more insight into the
client’s story, thereby creating the impetus
for more effective treatment planning and
interventions. This can be used within the
counseling room with role plays so the
client can more effectively cope with
situations as they occur outside of therapy.
If the client is seeing a psychiatrist and is
prescribed psychotropic medications or a
general practitioner and prescribed non-
psychotropic medications such as blood
pressure or insulin, this would help client,
counselor, and doctors to better understand
the biological component of the client’s
story which could be associated with side
effects of the medications expressed in
counseling.

Basically, photos, weather,
GPS, time, date, and etc can be
included within the journal
entry to create a high quality
electronic experience to
become as close as the original
experience as possible then
document this.
($4.99 – iPad, iPhone, iPod

Applicability to CSL: Self-Care &
Practice.
This app can bring the counselor very
close to the experience in the journal by
the time, place, photos, weather, and
others that have been seen and
documented by the client. This can truly
help the counselor in secondhand viewing
and retelling of the experience by the
client. This can help the counselor in
information gathering and goal setting,
also in treatment planning and updating
the goals and treatment plan over time as
the sessions progress. With the current
uncertainty in the counseling field about
electronic record keeping and electronic
communication, the passcode lock on the
journal is a wonderful feature to help
keep records confidential. The clients at
their and the counselors discretion may
email their journals to the counselor and
possibly decreasing the amount of face to
face contact by potentially providing e-

credentials, licenses, the insurance
coverage of e-therapy, and the state
regulations and laws governing electronic

This app could be a good option for

ability to GPS locate, time, and date
stamp the journal entry, this could be
more efficient for client journals. In
addition, this app allows users to import

avenue for clients to receive
psychoeducational or counseling related
materials from the counselor, or for the
client to send the journal entry to the
counselor. Again, dependent upon the
informed consent and the state, local,
counselor credentials or license, journals
exported to the counselor through this app
can possibly decrease the amount of face

print the journal entries. This could be
completed within the counselor office or

Activities, Thought Checker,

Applicability to CSL: Practice.
Cognitive behavior therapy has
demonstrated effectiveness with various
populations, and has an established
evidence base. With the four features
within this app, this is very valuable to a
counselor and a client. Since the majority
of a client’s life is spent outside of
counseling and counselors are to assist
clients to be autonomous and self-sufficient
in managing their own lives while “leaving
no footprint” as Insoo Kim Berg said
(Ratner, George, Iveson, 2012), this app is
almost all encompassing to help clients to
do such. The moodkit activities section
contains specific steps, tips, and techniques
to reduce negative feelings and increase
well-being, which could be used by the
client outside of session and reported to the
counselor within session to enhance
treatment as a supplement. The thought
checker tool can assist clients in
identifying, catching, and modifying
thoughts attributed to the feeling in the
moment. This can be used in and out of
session, with the possibility of role plays
with client and counselor during face to
face meetings. The mood tracker and
journal components of this app are
particularly helpful for the counselor. The
counselor can see how the client’s mood
fluctuates by the mood tracker, with the
linked triggers and thoughts via a narrative
provided by the client within the journaling
piece. In, and potentially out of sessions
with the export and email ability, the
counselor can have access to all this rich
data to help to be more effective in
working with clients who use this app
regularly. This information will be critical
in planning interventions, treatment plans,
and understanding the client’s unique
worldview.

Dialectical behavior therapy is an
effective behavior management
treatment modality. This type of therapy
contains mindfulness which helps to
manage behavior while calming clients.
Specifically, for counselors working
with individuals overcoming borderline
personality disorder or individuals who
are managing bipolar diagnosis, this
could be a powerful tool for these as
well as many other clients. The
mindfulness activities within this app
could be used directly in-session. The
behavior tracker can be used in session
to help gain insight into when, where,
and how mood shifts to increase insight
in the situations and triggers to mood
shift. With this, the counselor and client
can process these situations and triggers
to help modify behavior to a more
effective means of managing behavior.
With the behavior tracker, the skills, and
the coaching of skills, this app is very
unique and powerful to be used with
clients. With the new skills, clients learn
a new way of thinking, acting, and
behaving outside of session where they
spend most of their time. With the ability
to email all this data to the counselor,
specific difficulties can be addressed

blocking thoughts are, as many as
desired. Users also add what their
emotional states are and it is scaled
from left to right, adding a
quantitative measure of emotional
state toward their goal completion.
Users can also add tailored
distractions toward each task. At the
end of entering emotions, blocking
thoughts, and distractions, the user
then reframes thinking into a more
actionable thought to help manage
procrastination. The user can track
their thoughts, emotions, and
distractions graphically by the
scales, which help the individual
learn by overcoming past issues.

Applicability to CSL: Learning,
Self-Care, & Practice. This app is
unique and applicable to counseling
due to several factors. First, the user
can scale their thoughts, distractions,
and emotions from left (best) to right
(worst) overtime, which shows
progress and can help clients gain
hope and learn about their
procrastination. This data can also be
emailed to their counselor which can
be used during session and directly
enquired about. By clients learning
how they think, feel, and act, they
can gain insight into their behaviors
and learn to control these in the
moment to become more apt in
dealing with procrastination. The
counselor can help the client with
the CBT portions of this app in the
counseling session to create a new,
more effective way of dealing with
procrastination. This app also has the
distraction component, wherein the
counselor can ask about the
distractions or create role plays and
the client can work to minimize
these. With the password protection
feature, the client can maintain
confidential information safe.
Procrastination
Study Features: This app contains
differing sounds which are said by
the designers to increase
productivity by masking
background noises and other
distractions to improve focus and
productivity. This app is structured
on the principle that after 45
minutes individuals should take a
quick break to refocus and improve
memory comprehension. After 45
minutes the sounds cut off and help
the users to structure breaks. Then
when the user returns, the sounds
will begin again. (Free – iPad,
iPhone, iPod Touch)
