Choosing a Confirmation Sponsor
Choosing a Confirmation Sponsor is an important first step in preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. The person you choose as your sponsor is charged with the responsibility of walking with you through the 10 week preparation period and beyond. Here are just a few helpful hints on how to choose your sponsor. • You must have only one sponsor You must choose only one individual to serve as your sponsor. The sponsor does not have to be of the same gender as you. However you will want to keep in mind: �Your sponsor cannot be a parent. (However, a confirmed sibling, aunt, uncle, grandparent, etc. may be considered.) � You are encouraged to consider a baptismal godparent as a sponsor. � Your sponsor must have been confirmed in the Catholic faith. � Your sponsor must be an active, participating member of a Catholic parish at this time. • Your sponsor should be someone you look up to as a role model of the Catholic faith. Choose an individual who you can confide in, share your joys and struggles, and are comfortable talking to about issues of faith. • It is preferred that your sponsor be available to participate in the Confirmation program with you. There are two dates that we would ask your sponsor to be available for: 1. The “Rite of Enrollment” will take place during the second Retreat on : (TBA) This simple, beautiful rite will introduce you and your sponsor to the parish community. We understand that sponsors who live out of the area would be unavailable. The Diocese will set for our Confirmation Mass. Your sponsor will need to be present for this Mass. As soon as we have these dates, you will be notified. • In an emergency circumstance, a proxy may be chosen to stand in the place of your sponsor if he/she cannot attend the Rite of Enrollment or the Confirmation Mass.
