Army sergeant describes experience in Kanduhar
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR John Craemer served in the part of the world where the Taliban was formed and gave UW-Washington County students a glimpse of the experience during a Veterans Day program at the school Nov. 11. Craemer, Master Sgt. with the US Army Civil Affairs Battalion out of El Paso, served in Kanduhar, Afghanistan in 2011-12 as part of the provisional reconstruction team that is comprised of Navy and Air Force units as well as the 82nd Civil Affairs Battalion and the Rhode Island National Guard, all of which support the 82nd Airborne and 10th Mountain Divisions. Craemer recited the mission of the Civil Affairs Battalion, which is “to support commanders by engaging the civil component of the operational environment to achieve stated US objectives and ensure the sustained legitimacy of the mission and transparency and the credibility of the military force before, during and after other military operations.” Craemer explained that the civil affairs wing seeks to fill gaps in capacity in government, government entities, communities and society as a whole. Craemer’s work involved meetings with the area governor and the dinners afterwards. “We go into places like Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo

and we work with levels of government to build their capacity to function,” he explained. The civil affairs unit oversaw the construction of a police station and conducted joint patrols with the Afghan security force. While the main compound was never struck, there were police substations that were struck. He later showed a photo of a piece of debris that came from a car bombing that occurred about a third of a mile away from the governor’s compound. “We had pieces that big falling on our compound,” he said. The civil affairs unit creates a network to address problems ranging from water and sewer to building and supplying and schools and training police and firefighters. In addition, civil affairs works with civil society

organizations that are the equivalent of women’s groups or service clubs. “People fail to realize how much these different society organizations can steer the way that we live. This is part of something that is missing in these organizations, they don’t have that women’s group that stands up and says ‘no, this isn’t right. We need to do it this way.’” Craemer displayed several photos from his experience in Kanduhar, including training and photos of the city. A used car lot, photos of boys selling ice cream and afghan soda were among the photos. He later showed a photo of cats that were adopted to keep smaller rodents away from the area. Craemer worked in the governor’s palace. Craemer described the governor of Kanduhar as a “great guy” who was born in the city but who fled when the Soviets occupied the country in the 1980s. The governor first went to Switzerland then graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in agriculture and taught in Wausau for a time. “He could leave at any time, he doesn’t need to be there. He could come back to the United States and teach,” Craemer said of the governor. He added there were numerous attempts on the governor’s life. “He stayed because of his commitment to his people,” Craemer said.

Little Ten all-conference football selections announced
Four Slinger football players were selected to the Wisconsin Little Ten Conference first team. Linemen Jason Erdmann, Aaron Maternowski, Alex Maternowski and linebacker Jacob Bjorklund made the frist team. Four Slinger players made the conference second-team: Running back Thomas Lofy, lineman Jacob Westerman, defensive end Joe Allen and defensive back Jason Schumacher. Three Hartford players made the second team: Running back Ethan Willer, lineman Adam Lange and linebacker Owen Mislang. Also making the second team was West Bend West linebacker Jason Diels. Honorable mention selections included Sam Osterberg from Slinger; Jordan Jewell, Noah Christel, Mitch Datka and Marcus Oeschner from Hartford; Jason Balkowski, Jonah Maas and Corey Nielsen from West Bend East; and Patrick Baumann, Jake Fischer, Austin Thiessen, Jake Endlich, Parker Gawlick and Mark Schaefer from West Bend West.
Dear Dr.s Winter: Can you make my dentures non-removable? Details: I had my few remaining teeth removed and torus surgery done in Dec of 2008 and full dentures (upper and lower) put in immediately. It went well. My dentist explained that after a year of complete healing I would probably require a re-lining at a cost of $1000. I would like to explore my other options. I am tired of using adhesives 2-3 times a day. I am a 58 yr old healthy active woman. thanks Answer: Dear Danielle, you sound like an excellent candidate for "fixed teeth." When a denture needs relining it is because the gum tissues have healed and shrunken after the initial extractions. The rubbing of the denture against this tissue leads to bone loss as well. People lose bone at an alarming rate and over the first 5 years there can be a loss of 60% of the original bone height and or width. If you come in for a comprehensive examination and x-ray visit we can discuss your options, the associated costs and the time involved to help you reach your goals. Options for fixed dentistry on implants will be either a "hybrid" prosthesis-a fixed denture that is cemented or screwed into the implants or a fixed porcelain bridge on implants. In order for you to get these prostheses you would need 6-9 implants in the upper arch and 5-9 implants in the lower jaw. The number of implants depends on the quality, quantity and location of your existing bone as well as your budget. I often explain to patients that if you go with a prosthesis where only 4 implants are placed and 1 fails, you have a complete failure of the bridge. So using more supports will improve the engineering of the prosthesis and decrease the forces on each individual implant. If the implants are found to be too expensive for

Protect your home when the power goes out
(BPT) - Super storms like Sandy, major floods in Colorado and other natural disasters remind us of the devastating impact a long-term power outage can have on a community. But it doesn't take a major disaster to take down the power - and make life difficult - for days. A basic winter storm with heavy snow and ice can do the trick, too. "Extended power loss in the wake of a storm or natural disaster can be as damaging and threatening as the disaster itself," cautions Ed Del Grande, a master contractor and nationally syndicated home improvement expert. "Food spoiling in the refrigerator or an uncomfortable temperature in your home may be the least of your worries. When the power's out, your home's sump pump won't work and could cause flooding. A home-based business could lose important data and days of operations. And family members with special needs may be especially affected. With hurricane season in full swing and winter rapidly approaching, it makes sense to prepare your home and family to face a potential power outage. The experts at Kohler Generators offer some advice: * Have a plan that covers how you will evacuate your home and neighborhood, if necessary, an established meeting place if you lose contact with loved ones, and a list of important phone numbers such as doctors, family members, etc. * Prepare an emergency kit using a backpack or a large plastic bucket with a lid. Stock it with three days' worth of nonperishable food and water, a flashlight with extra batteries, a battery-powered or hand-cranked radio, batterypowered clock, first aid kit, cash, medications and a CD or USB drive that contains digital copies of important documents. Store your kit in a secure location that you can get to easily in case of emergency. * If you're ordered to evacuate, do so immediately. If you're able to ride out the storm in your home, turn off and/or unplug major appliances like water heaters, stoves and air conditioning units. Unplug electronics like TVs and PCs, microwaves and stereos. This will help prevent damage to appliances and avoid overloading the system when the power comes back on. Leave just one light on so you'll know when the power is restored. * Never connect a portable generator directly into the electrical system of your home; electricity could flow backward into the power lines, endangering lives. Plug appliances directly into a portable generator using properly rated extension cords. Make sure the portable generator is properly vented to avoid the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Never bring a portable generator into your home, garage or on a porch. Keep it outside with plenty of ventilation at all times. * To keep your home up-and-running during a power outage, consider permanently installing a standby generator before trouble arrives. While portable generators can power one or two appliances, a standby generator can supply power for your whole house. A professional installer can place a standby generator outside your home; it looks similar to a central air conditioning unit and runs on natural gas or propane, using existing gas lines. When the power goes out, the standby generator automatically turns on to power critical and sophisticated appliances and systems such as heating and cooling, lights, refrigerators, sump pumps and home security systems. Kohler, a leading manufacturer of automatic standby generators, advises homeowners considering a standby generator to: * Look for a unit that offers clean, consistent power and can handle heavy loads. A generator that produces substandard power could damage sophisticated electronics like HD TVs, stereos and computers. A generator that struggles to handle heavy loads will be less efficient and may even fail in a pinch. * Choose a unit that can power up quickly, allowing you to keep your home functioning without interruption. A unit that powers up slowly may only handle a few circuits at a time, forcing you to choose between which essential appliance or system you'll power up first. * Consider appearance, since a standby unit sits outside the home. Also, look for a unit that is corrosion-resistant an especially important consideration for homes near water.
