Kingsland Pre-School believes that the welfare and protection of children are our
primary responsibility. All staff and volunteers in the setting recognise their
responsibility towards those in their care, and are made aware of their individual
roles and understand the procedures they must follow if they suspect abuse or
neglect. The health and safety of young children and adults is paramount.
Kingsland Pre-School will ensure the safety of both children and adults in the
following areas by:

Environment

A risk assessment of the premises must be conducted periodically, and
action taken to minimize identified risks.
Safety checks of the premises both indoors and outdoors must be made
before every session.
The main entrance will always be locked. Access is only obtained through
ringing a bell. The main entrance will not be open until 9am. There are 2
security gates in position – one in the front hall and a second in the inner
lobby. A member of staff will always be there to welcome the
Parents/Carers as they arrive. On collection the children are handed over to
the parents/carers by a member of staff. There are notices on both gates,
to ask the parent to make sure they are closed securely at all times.
Any public space will be checked for litter and other dangers.
Equipment must be checked before and after use for any damage, if any
damage is found it will be either safely repaired or thrown away.
The layout of toys and equipment inside the hall must be suitable for
children/adults and will allow for freedom of movement.
There must be adequate systems and equipment for the detection and
control of fires.
Fire doors are easily identifiable, each one being labelled and will note be
obstructed.
All dangerous materials must be stored out of reach of children.
The Pre-School must keep a record of fire drills.
Large equipment is checked before use and care will be taken when putting
equipment up.
All equipment offered to children must be developmentally appropriate.
We will seek and supply relevant health and safety training.
Ofsted will be notified with any significant changes or events.

Supervision

 All children must be supervised by adults at all times and must always be in
sight of an adult.
 Children will only be allowed to leave the group with authorised adults.
 Children do not have access to the kitchen cupboards or cooker.
 The adult-child ratio of outings will be 1:4 at a minimum.
 There must always be at least 2 adults on the premises when children are
present.
 Children are encouraged and supported to take responsibility for their own
safety, as appropriate for their age/ability.

Medicine

In the case of children who require medication for other conditions the
procedure are as follows:

If possible, the parent will administer the said medication.
Medicines will not be administered by a member of staff, unless they have
been prescribed for that child by a doctor.
All medications are kept in their original containers, clearly labelled with the
child’s name and the dosage and instructions.
All medication will be kept in a locked cupboard.
Parents must give written consent before we will administer medicine
(consent forms are available).
In most cases the parent will provide training and written information on the
administration of the medication, including clear instructions about dosage
and how to administer it.
Should the administration of medication require technical/medical
knowledge we shall seek (working with parents) individual training from a
qualified health professional.
NB. This training is to be specific to the individual child concerned,
not the condition.
A medication log will be maintained to include; the name of the child, the
medications name, times it should be administered, dates and times it was
administered and the signature of the member of staff who administered
each dose. (This must be done immediately after administering medicine).
Parents are asked to sign this each day to acknowledge the entry.

Food
Kingsland Pre School provides snacks that are nutritious, paying due care to each
child’s individual dietary requirements (records are kept as part of the admission
process, see Healthy Eating Policy)

Illness (See ill in care policy)
Parents/Carers are asked to keep their child at home if they are ill, in order to
prevent cross infection. Parents are asked to keep their child at home if they
have been vomiting or had diarrhoea in the past 48 hours. (See Minimum Periods
of Exclusion Policy).
 Ofsted will be notified when there are identifiable diseases and any serious
accidents or injuries with in the setting.

Children who require antibiotics are deemed to be too ill to attend the PreSchool, and we will not administer the medication.

First Aid
Kingsland Pre-School ensures that all members of staff attend a paediatric first
aid training course. There is always a trained first aider on the premises and on
outings.
 We keep a well stocked first aid box, and the contents are checked
regularly. A record is kept of the contents, including ‘use by’ dates and
items used, to ensure that they can be replaced as necessary. The first aid
box will be kept in an accessible place at each session/outing, well out of
the reach of children.
 We ask parents to provide us with written consent for any first aid or
necessary emergency treatment as part of our admission process.
 We ask parents to provide us with written consent for any first aid or
necessary emergency treatment as part of our admission process.
 We keep a record of all accidents and any treatment given which parents
are asked to sign.
 We monitor the occurrence of accidents in order to identify and eliminate
risks. All staff accidents are written in appropriate accident book.

Adults Safety

All adults within the Pre-School, staff or visitors will be made aware of the
Pre-School’s safety policy.
Adults will be given advice on safe lifting.
Heavy objects will not be placed above head height and adults will be given
a step ladder to stand on if they need to reach up.
Appropriate health and safety training will be sought and supplied.

Management
There is a book available at each session for staff to report any accidents or
incidents.
 This book will be checked when regular safety monitoring takes place and
all information gathered will be used as a basis for risk assessment.
 All adults will be made aware of the systems in place for the children’s
arrivals and departures; we have a signing in book for arrivals and
departures. There will be an adult on the door during these periods.
 No hot drinks in the same area as the children.
 Fire drills will be held three times a term as a minimum.

There will be a register taken of all arrivals and departures, so that the
supervisor knows who is in the building in the event of an emergency.
All adults will be informed that the building is a no smoking zone.
There is a first aid box available at all times.
Visitors must sign the visitor’s book and detail arrival and departure times
and in necessary check identification prior to entry.

Special Considerations
All adults will be made aware of particular activities that may pose particular
hazards. These being:
 Children playing near or with water.
 Children playing with sand.
 There must be safety matting beneath all climbing equipment, and these
activities must be supervised at all times.
 Care will be taken whilst the children are going through doors so that
fingers do not get trapped.
 Children will not be allowed to leave the Pre-School unattended.
 Individual risk assessments will be made of specific risks, with action taken
to minimize risks.
