Seniors Home Care Is Proud To Be Celebrating Its 26th Year In Business
Over 26 years ago, Kit Whittington, R.N., BSN, was the primary caregiver for her grandmother. Whittington was the only family available to assist with her care and because she also worked full time, acting as the primary caregiver grew increasingly difficult. She knew this was an unsustainable lifestyle and hired an independent caregiver to assist her. She soon discovered that her grandmother was not receiving the level of care she deserved. “At the end of the day, I checked on her and to my disbelief, I discovered the caregiver had simply not shown up. My grandmother had missed her doctor’s appointment and much needed meal. It was a debilitating moment; we were both in tears,” Whittington said. In 1987, Whittington started Seniors Home Care (SHC) to provide a family support system for older adults. SHC employs an around-the-clock nursing staff to assist clients and families with achieving their unique goals and needs. All nurses and caregivers are carefully screened, bonded and insured employees (not contractors). All employees undergo drug testing, a thorough background search and complete a training program. SHC offers flexibility of care ranging from a 30-minute QuickVisitTM to 24/7 care. SHC has received an A+ rating, as well as the Torch Award from the Better Business Bureau and is celebrating its 26th year in business serving the St. Louis area. “My own feelings of helplessness and a desire for a higher quality of life for my grandmother drove me to find a better way to care for her. The motivation behind SHC is my own personal experience and I’ve built the company on a solid foundation of 26 years of consistent, compassionate caring for all clients.”

Premiere Eye Associates Helps Patients See Better With Technology & Kindness
Premiere Eye Associates has been in practice for more than 40 years, moving its Clayton office to Kirkwood in March 2010. The Crystal City office remains in its same, convenient location. “We were thrilled to be able to bring our medical eye care and vision exam services to our new office in the Kirkwood area,” said Administrator Denise Bruff. The ophthalmology, optometry and optical practice offers routine eye exams for healthy eyes, which includes an outstanding and competitively-priced eyeglass and contact lens selection. The medical eye exam includes evaluation and, if needed, treatment of all eye diseases, including cataracts, glaucoma and diabetes management. Most medical and vision insurances are accepted. Premiere’s cornea specialist offers the latest in LASIK surgeries, which includes a free LASIK screening exam. Mark H. Spurrier, M.D., has been with the practice since 1986; Bradford B. Kesler, O.D., joined in 1998; and Randall E. Nacke, M.D., a cornea specialist, joined the staff in 2007. All physicians are board certified. Since Premiere has been in business, there have been significant “sight-saving” advancements in early detection of diseases, such as cataracts and glaucoma. Noteworthy developments also include improvement in surgical options, such as advanced technology lenses after cataract removal, in order to provide all patients the best outcome possible. “About 80 percent of vision problems worldwide are avoidable or curable,” Bruff said, adding that 22 million Americans aged 40 and older are affected by cataracts. “Our staff finds the most satisfaction in helping patients of all ages to see better. We take exceptional pride in the high standard of care each patient has come to know and expect,” Bruff said. “Our patients often praise the friendly and professional staff, comment on the state-of-the-art equipment used to provide each patient with the most personalized eye exam available, and, most of all, the kindness and expertise of our doctors. They love the beautiful new office in its convenient location.”

St. Louis Neurotherapy Treats ADHD & Mental Health Issues Holistically
The St. Louis Neurotherapy Institute was formed in 2009 to offer neurofeedback therapy, an effective solution for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety and various mental health conditions, to the St. Louis area. The practice provides neurofeedback therapy, parent education training, short-term psychotherapy and nutritional consultation. “The field of neurotherapy has made tremendous advancements in the past 30 years as an alternative to medication for various mental health conditions,” said Jason Rhodes, D.C., chief executive officer of St. Louis Neurotherapy Institute. This year, the American Academy of Pediatrics classified neurofeedback as a category I treatment for the treatment of ADHD, Rhodes said. In July, the FDA cleared the quantitative electroencephalogram, or QEEG (known in popular terms as a “brain map”) as a reliable method of assessing attention issues. “With the use of the QEEG brainmapping, we now have an objective tool to assess the function of the brain,” he said. The team brings a multidisciplinary holistic approach to a variety of mental health conditions. The staff includes Clinical Director Sharo Shafaie, Parent Counselor Angeline Duane and Program Director Dr. Ciloue Stewart. Patients appreciate that multidisciplinary approach to treatment, as well as the effectiveness of the therapy, and the “playful feel and relaxed energy” of the office. “They report that their children like coming to our office,” Rhodes said. Rhodes savors the satisfaction “of being able to help children and families improve their quality of life, offering hope to families that have been frustrated with traditional methods to treat mental health conditions.”

Comfort Shoe Specialists Has Been Alleviating Foot Pain In Style For 21 Years
Edith James finds that “being of service to others – especially in such a basic human need as walking without pain – fills our hearts with gratitude.” James, a certified pedorthist, founded Comfort Shoe Specialists on Oct. 1, 1992, to offer variety in remedies with attractiveness. Pedorthics is the art and science of ameliorating painful conditions of the lower extremities through design, modification and fit of footwear. A 2009 survey by the Institute for Preventive Foot Health showed that two of three Americans experience some degree of foot pain every day. “Walking wounded is epidemic,” James said. “After listening to concerns, we perform a 34 point assessment, then present options to assist our clients to be as pain free as possible.” The staff realizes little things can make a big difference. Socks and lotions may be part of the equation, or simply softening areas. Long empathizing with clients seeking good-looking footwear, James encourages vendors to make comfort shoes more fashionable. “Women are delighted to have so many cute, stylish shoes to choose from,” James said. Removable insoles are customized perfectly from information gleaned from Comfort Shoe’s evaluation to provide relief and support. This family business includes husband Joe Goodenough, who does custom lifts and soling work, and son and Marine veteran Jesse Fischer, GM and pedorthist. Especially proud that custom orthotics are made in house, they come with a Comfort Guarantee. Realigning feet to heal foot ailments is the passion of an educated staff who “offer solutions from shoe fit issues to the most complex conditions.” James relishes that chic styling is available nowadays. “We all enjoy feeling good and looking classy as possible can be part of that picture!”

West County Dental Treats The Whole Spectrum Of Dental Health Needs
Pete Spalitto, D.D.S., took a slight detour between dental school and private practice: he joined the U.S. Army. After receiving his doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Dental School (UMKC) in 2000, he continued his studies in the Army’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program. In all, Dr. Spalitto has been in practice for 13 years, nine in the St. Louis area. At his current location, West County Dental, first visits are always with Dr. Spalitto. Dr. Spalitto and his team take time to meet and learn about new patients in a warm, comfortable atmosphere. Early morning and evening appointments are taken, and dental care is for the entire family. Complete dental in-office care includes same-day crowns, root canals, extractions and implants. “Teamwork in motion is the best way I can describe Dr. Spalitto and the team at West County Dental,” said one patient. “Everyone is friendly, helpful, professional and knowledgeable. I’ve had cleanings, check ups, fillings, a mouth guard, and teeth whitening. All went very well, and I’m completely satisfied.” Dr. Spalitto’s dental approach is comprehensive, treating the whole spectrum of dental health needs that arise throughout a patient’s life. He also is committed to continually learning about the most recent advances in the field. Dr. Spalitto treats both children and adults, and is on staff at The Quarters at Des Peres helping those with memory loss. He is also on staff at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center, SSM St. Clare Health Center, and assists teaching general practice residency students at St. John’s. “Dr. Spalitto is knowledgeable in the most advanced dental procedures and has state-of-art technology in place,” said an anonymous patient. “He is also pain free, has the best chair-side manner I’ve ever experienced but, most of all, he is absolutely trustworthy.”

Ana Danielyan, M.D., on staff at Premier Medical Specialists, has a passion for working with patients and helping them stay well. “I used to practice hospital medicine as a hospitalist, but I really missed the long-term physician-patient relationship and I decided to go into primary care,” said Dr. Danielyan, who specializes in patients over age 17. Danielyan is board certified in Internal Medicine and received her medical degree from Yerevan State Medical University in Armenia. She completed her training at St. Luke’s Hospital, where she worked as a hospitalist for several years. Danielyan’s practice offers physicals, general wellness services, pre-operative screenings, EKGs and disease management for chronic conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes and weight issues. She is fluent in Russian and Armenian. One of the many ways the health care field has changed is in the education of patients. “You see more patients that are educated about their disease management, which is encouraging,” Danielyan said. “I like when patients ask questions and are involved in their care.” Danielyan follows her patients while they are in the hospital and visits patients in nursing homes. “Being in primary care, you really start caring about your patients’ health,” she said. “You know how important it is to treat them when they ‘feel healthy’ before they become sick.” Danielyan is on the medical staff at Des Peres Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital. She accepts new patients and makes evening and same-day appointments available. Her office accepts most insurance plans, including Medicare.

The business started by focusing on post-acute care, but has expanded over the years into community-based outpatient services to reach people of all levels of ability. The Kirkwood outpatient facility is part of the RehabCare national company based in Louisville, Ky. Services include physical, occupational and speech therapy, as well as wellness programs, healthy living lectures, exercise classes and personal training. “Maintaining quality care is a rapidly changing market,” said Jacque Cornell, physical therapist and administrator of the facility. “We focus on offering individualized care.” RehabCare Group provides one-on-one services to people of all ages and abilities. In addition to orthopedic care the company offers specialty programs for vestibular/ balance disorders, Parkinson’s and other neurological disorders, contracture management and pediatrics. The professional staff consists of physical, occupational and speech therapists, as well as certified personal trainers with experience in a wide variety of patient populations. The Kirkwood staff includes physical therapy assistants Karen Hays and Jan Poore; Maura Meyers, occupational therapist; Amanda Heisele, speech-language pathologist; and Brandon Takacs, wellness coordinator. “I get the most satisfaction from helping individuals reach their optimal level of function,” Cornell said. “Our rehab team is committed to treatment using leading-edge techniques with the goal of restoring function and renewing life.” Patients often tell the staff they feel better and enjoy the greatest level of independence in their work and personal lives after working with RehabCare therapists.

Making Smiles in the Digital Age: Local Orthodontist Connects Online
For orthodontist Dr. Toni Goins, it’s the personal touch that makes her practice shine. “Our patients come first. Everything we do – from our centralized location to our evening and weekend office hours – is built on that philosophy,” Goins said. Yet, in this digital age, how can that caring approach be translated online? By making it easier for people to find what they need, Goins said. She recently updated and rebranded her orthodontic practice website to KirkwoodBraces.com. Now patients are able to schedule consultations, watch videos about braces, read verified reviews, complete registration forms and access educational resources online. “Convenience is important. Parents are busy; if they want to read about braces late at night or schedule a consultation, they can through our site,” said Goins. Her patient-first philosophy garners praise, as evidenced by the dozens of positive online reviews and the new patients referred to her practice. “We want to improve our patients’ lives, providing them with beautiful healthy smiles, which can boost confidence and self-esteem,” said Goins. “However, we also want to make our patients so happy that they smile throughout treatment.” Her practice, located in the Woodbine Center in the heart of Kirkwood, offers clear and metal braces as well as Invisalign therapy.

Outpatient Therapy At Rehab 1 Helps Patients Overcome & Recover
Physical and certified hand therapist Ann Kammien, opened the Des Peres location of Rehab 1 Network 20 years ago to provide personalized and specialized outpatient therapy for patients in the Des Peres/Kirkwood/Webster area. Her staff provides physical therapy, hand therapy and massage therapy, specializing in therapy and/or massage for arthritis, sports injuries, post-surgery recovery, osteoporosis, balance problems, pain management and women’s health. Over the years, orthopedic surgeries have become less invasive and require less rehabilitation, Kammien said. Therapists have become more efficient in providing longterm advice in a few visits. Rehab 1 is offering a new osteoporosis program focusing on the prevention of fractures. The program involves posture improvement, appropriate strengthening and nutritional consultation. Industry and demographic changes also are driving a trend toward prevention. “With increasing co-pays and deductibles, the profession of physical therapy is moving toward earlier intervention, fewer visits per episode and more ongoing home programs,” Kammien said. “With the aging population, much research and focus have been on the issues of the elderly, such as fall prevention and general fitness.” The Rehab 1 staff includes physical therapists Diana Gray, Karen Bromeier and Pam Hubbard; licensed massage therapist Lisa Ownbey; office assistant Kathy Allen; and office manager Linda Pudlowski. “Our staff finds great satisfaction in seeing patients’ willingness to learn about their own bodies, the specific anatomy related to their pain and progress toward recovery,” said Kammien. “These patients also continue to teach us about living with disease and injuries and limitations in function.”

Choose Watson Imaging For Affordable, Personalized Radiology Services
Since 1993, Watson Imaging Center has been providing quality diagnostic imaging at an affordable rate. The center’s specialties are digital mammograms, CAT scans, ultrasounds, X-rays and bone density scans. Watson Imaging Center is independently owned, which enables the company to offer competitive pricing. The center contracts with most major insurance companies and offers discounted rates to patients without insurance. Watson Imaging has no financial ties with any hospitals and is accredited by the American College of Radiology. “Our mission is to provide convenient, affordable and accurate radiology services while maintaining personalized, professional service to all patients,” said a company spokesperson. The staff consists of highly trained, certified technologists with many years of experience. Images are read by boardcertified radiologists who are on duty daily. Technologists regularly attend continuing education classes to stay current on the latest techniques, and the company continually updates its technology. X-rays are performed on a walk-in basis, and Watson offers same day appointments for most exams with results within 24 hours. “The people are all very friendly and professional and they get you in and out quickly,” said customer K.F. of St. Louis. “Each time I have been to Watson Imaging, I have had very pleasant experiences.” The staff reminds patients that “you have the right to choose where to go for your imaging. Tell your doctor that you want to go to Watson Imaging Center.” Watson Imaging Center is located at the corner of Watson Road and Lindenwood with front-door parking.

Eye Care Associates Blends State-Of-The-Art Medicine, Personal Service
Since 1894, Eye Care Associates of St. Louis has provided patients with comprehensive, hands-on, personalized eye care. Sean Breit, M.D. specializes in cataract surgery; Todd LaPoint, O.D. and Janae Kadlec, O.D. perform routine eye exams and are experts in specialty contact lens fitting; Stephen Wexler, M.D. is one of the most respected LASIK specialists in the country. Eye Care Associates also offers an on-site, fullservice optical shop with a friendly and helpful staff. Throughout its 119-year history, the practice has maintained an affiliation with Washington University School of Medicine. But, according to Dr. Wexler, the field itself has undergone numerous changes. “In the early 1980s, ophthalmology was hospitalbased; today virtually all surgery is outpatient,” he explained. “And then there is LASIK surgery which has dramatically changed the lives of millions of people.” For Wexler, the reward of ophthalmology comes from making a real difference in the lives of his patients and sharing in the joy they feel after a successful procedure. “The evolution of the profession and the positive impact it has made has been remarkable and dramatic,” he said. In 2011, Eye Care Associates acquired Sappington Eye Centre in Sunset Hills, bringing its exceptional medical, surgical and vision care to patients in South County.
