Anne Arundel County
The senior centers are taking registration through June 15 for summer courses which begin July 2. Seniors can improve their overall health, mobility, and agility via various fitness, exercise and dance classes and discover their creativity in art classes, taught by instructors from Anne Arundel Community College. They can keep their minds active with language and discussion courses as well. Other events during Healthy Maryland Week include the new Walking Club at the Arnold Senior Activity Center, 44 Church Road, Arnold, which meets at 9:30 a.m. Wednesdays, with nearly two dozen members participating. Group members also may walk on their own, recording distances on the route along Church Road. Pascal Senior Activity Center is continuing the six-week Diabetic Self-Management Program at its site, 25 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie. Instructor Pam Toomey and Margo Carey, registered nurse, are covering topics such as appropriate exercise, nutrition choices, blood sugar monitoring, communicating effectively with your physician, problem solving and goal setting. Fitness instructor Louise Mulvey provides a one-hour informational session on how to exercise safely, demonstrate equipment use, and answer questions on the second Tuesday of each month beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Pascal Center. Register at the office. All seven senior centers offered nutritious meals every weekday which are free for anyone age 60 and older, and at a reduced cost for those age 55-59. The meals are part of a federal program to encourage socialization as well as healthy eating habits. Reservations are required. Baltimore City
The Baltimore City Health Department, Baltimore City Recreation and Parks, and University of Maryland Medical Systems will celebrate the Senior Health and Fitness Day on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 from 11AM - 3PM. This event is titled “Walk the Zoo for a Healthier You.” The Baltimore Zoo will buzz with approximately 250 active seniors who will participate in a walk around the zoo, exercise demonstrations, dancing, a resource fair, and a group luncheon.

Baltimore County
At various locations across the county during the year, seminars on Hoarding: Trash or Treasure will be conducted by the Baltimore County Hoarding Task Force, consisting of a social worker, therapist, and a home aide who work with individuals in their home to understand and change thinking and behaviors, learn to organize and decide what to discard, and de-clutter the home. For more information, call MAP at 410-887-2594. Also at various locations and dates, the Dollars and Sense Financial Literacy Series will help seniors navigate financial transitions of life and help them handle their money better. Registration is required. To learn more, contact (410) 887-2002 or [email protected]. A series on “Grandparents Raising Grandchildren” will take place across the county. The “Change How You Age With Food” series will take place at various locations across the county beginning in May 2012. Charles County
Matter of Balance class is taking place at the Nanjemoy Community Center and Indian Head Senior Center (IHSC). Waldorf Senior Center is hosting their Open House, featuring the Senior Center Show Troupe, display of various forms of media and Arts. Information available discussing ways to get Healthy at the Waldorf Senior Center (WSC) beginning with nutrition, fitness and mind exercise programs. June programs include Exotic Fruit Presentation at IHSC on June 5th 11:00am; Men's health presentation at WSC on June 28th 10:15 am; Is Prostrate Screening Right for You? Richard R. Clark Senior Center (RRCSC), Wed June 6; AARP Safe Driving, RRCSC & WSC. Both programs being offered in June. Montgomery County
Rockville Senior Center is sponsoring its annual Health Fair on Wed. May 30 from 11 AM to 1:30 PM. The center also offers a complete wellness, fitness and health promotion program daily at its new, state-of-the-art fitness center. Montgomery County has an ongoing Senior Nutrition Hotline that is available to help seniors in the county separate nutrition facts from fallacies, as seniors are frequent targets of nutrition misinformation. The hotline is available on Wednesdays from 9 am to 11 am by calling 240-777-1100. The line is answered by a registered dietitian. Melanie Polk, Director of the Senior Nutrition Program in the county, will be interviewed on June 13 by JC Heyward of WUSA 9, the DC CBS affiliate. The topic will be Ten Nutrition Mistakes that Sabotage Healthy Aging. Holy Cross Hospital and Kaiser Permanente are teaming up to offer Senior Fit, for seniors wanting to improve their strength, endurance, flexibility and overall health. Senior Fit is a 45-minute multicomponent exercise class designed for people age 55 and older which include light cardiovascular exercise, strength training and stretching in a fun, supportive atmosphere. This program is a partnership of Holy Cross Hospital, Kaiser Permanente, the Montgomery County Department of Recreation, Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission and local churches. Senior Fit is offered at 22 locations in Montgomery County, Prince George’s County and the District of Columbia free of charge.
