Indonesia’s economic development, social changes and a new national health insurance program
are strongly accelerating the need for a new paradigm in the country’s healthcare dynamics.
With the kick-off of the JKN program in 2014, Indonesia is undertaking a major transformation of one of the largest
healthcare systems in the world. The government is now motivated to improve its domestic healthcare infrastructure, and
has announced its commitment to carry out policies to meet the needs of health services, healthcare equipment and
medical devices, and medical personnel. The new administration is expected to introduce Indonesia Health Card (Kartu
Indonesia Sehat) as a nationwide program, which would provide free medical healthcare for the poor.
While the Indonesian government works to build a universal healthcare system for its citizens, the private sector is active
too. Private health provision in Indonesia is quickly evolving and becoming competitive, providing quality care and
opportunities for international investors and suppliers.
Opportunities for European businesses thrive in the healthcare sector in the form of direct investment, partnership
ventures, technology export and training.
The highest potential is found in medical equipment, health infrastructure and services, health IT, and hospital and clinic
programs.

MEDICAL EQUIPMENT
With the implementation of the National Health Insurance System, Indonesia will see a strong increase in the
demand for medical devices. Domestic healthcare providers are increasingly looking for high technology
equipment to better serve the needs of their patients. The medical equipment market is projected to rise 12.7%
per annum, remaining one of the fastest growing worldwide. The most promising sub-sectors include therapies
and treatment equipment for cancer, clinical laboratory equipment, medical disposables, dental, diagnostic and
dermatology equipment.

HEALTH INFRASTRUCTURE AND SERVICES
There is an increased commitment to upgrade healthcare services in Indonesia, creating further availability of
hospital facilities and services. Hospitals are increasingly collaborating with foreign architects and technicians,
as well as with doctors and/or medical institutions to compete with healthcare providers in the region and curb
medical tourism. This is often conducted in the form of training and knowledge transfers to doctors, nurses and
technical team, particularly on the usage of high-tech equipment.

HEALTH IT
Increasing demand for efficient patient care pushed by a growing middle class population and the 2014 kick-off
of the JKN program, has been triggering a modernization trend in the hospital market. The need for improved
healthcare delivery which can support a numerous and growing population has been reflecting in improvements
in medical care practice and cost-efficiency measures, by transitioning from paper files to computerized

media.

HOSPITAL AND CLINIC PROGRAMS
Based on the new Negative Investment List, the Indonesian government has increased opportunities for foreign
investors to invest in the healthcare sector. With the new regulations, foreign ownership of specialty and subspecialty hospitals and clinic projects can go up to 67%. Major medical groups in Indonesia are expanding.
