Effects of Heroin To Its UserJake

The day is held in low regards to Steve. Between the problems at
home, a deteriorating relationship, all accompanied by struggles in school,
Steve can only hope to find an escape from the ‘obstacles’ he must
overcome. A drink or two in the presence of friends has been his agenda for
the last month and lost its sheen. Marijuana no longer induces the euphoria
it once used to. Residing in a rural town, prescription pills make a “once in a
blue moon” appearance on the street market, today not being an exception.
This day is in fact special however; this being the day Steve resorts to heroin
to hide his mental disturbances.
Stories similar to the one above hold relevance to a growing crowd in
the United States. The problem being, these overwhelmingly stressed
individuals are simply only adding to the list of ‘obstructions’ in life. The
reason for this being, heroin holds many more adverse effects than favorable
effects.
While the short-term ‘positive’ effects of an initial ‘rush’ (due to muopioid receptors swarming the brain, releasing mass amounts of dopamine)
followed by a clouded mental state and slight euphoric feeling reported by
users, the list of possible side effects continues in an unfavorable manner.
The detrimental effects begin playing a role shortly after consumption, with
depressed respiration, nausea and vomiting, and for those who are pregnant,
spontaneous abortion. In a more extended period of time, heroin
consumption studies show a wide arsenal of many detrimental effects such
as; addiction after so much as one use, infectious diseases (typically brought
on from sharing needles) such as HIV, collapsed veins, abscesses, infection
of the heart’s lining and valves, and kidney and liver disease. Though not
being proven completely true, in studies done by Dr. Nancy K. Mello and Dr.
Paul Cushman, the use of heroin also can be related to an increase in the
need to smoke in tobacco users, as well as a relation to a decrease in sexual

behavior in some users (more so in recovering addicts partaking in a
methadone-based treatment)
On top of the effects stated above, several other negative variables
can be included, this being explained by Dr. Donald B. Louria in his studies at
New York University. Louria gives a brief overview of the travel habits of
heroin, beginning as simply morphine, typically in the eastern hemisphere of
the world. These capsules are then modified into heroin, which have been
found in the past to be ‘cut’ with another substance to increase volume. At
any time after using this potential narcotic cocktail, said unknown substance
could cause any number of side effects independently; thus making the
consumption of heroin even more unstable and unpredictable. One must also
think, even if that unknown substance has no side effects, depending on the
amount added, the purity of the heroin itself can change with every batch. A
user of this drug may be viewed as a gambler to those who prefer analogies;
the user’s health being the poker chips, an overdose being the losing
outcome. No matter how long an addict has been using this drug,
uncertainty will be found with every dose.
Unfortunately for those who choose to avoid the use of this vicious and
ever-changing drug, they can only figuratively “stand by and watch” as
desperate people choose to begin including heroin in their daily agendas.
Being that heroin is so cheap to make and buy, very potent, and very
addictive, a day that heroin is completely extinct seems unfathomable. The
world’s sober population will continue awaiting that day in the meantime.
