Highest Expression of Love
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should
not perish but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16
What makes most is love. Love is the most important part of our lives. Because God is love, the most
important lesson He wants us to learn is how to love.
I. The Giver of Love – “God” – The God of the Bible, the God who made the world, the God whom we
came, the God whom we go as our Judge, the God of Israel, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
It is not any other God. The Christian God. God the Father.

II. The Act of Love – A. Loved
Different forms of “love” in Greek words or language:
1. “Epithumia” – First; lowest kind of love; plain promiscuity; purely fleshly love we have to avoid
2. “Eros” – Love of attraction; special love; primarily a love of the heart; mutual attraction between male
and female; most common form; involves __ love; you fall into it or fall out of it.
3. “Philia” – We get words like “Philadelphia;” love of brothers; love of affection; more of love of the
mind; finding interest in common; “like”
4. “Agape” – Love of action; centered in the will; nearest word is “care;” To care means two things: your
attention and your action
“To act in agape love is to respond to someone else’s need, pay attention to that need and do something
about it.” – David Pawson
Since agape s centered in the will, it can be commanded.
In I Corinthians chapter 13, the word “love” means agape, love is kind...suffers long.” Christian marriage
is centered in agape.
The word “loved” is John 3:16 is not primarily God’s attraction to us, nor God’s affection for us, but
God’s attention to our need, and His actions on our behalf – God so agape’d.
B. “Gave” – giving His son in death
“But God demonstrated His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8
III. The Recipient of Love – “World;” Human race, human society; not a geographical word which refers
to our planet, our globe, but a human word.

“Word” connotes a bad image; it is a sinful world; it is a fallen world, a rebellious world.
IV. The Love Given – “Only begotten Son;” one and only Son; Jesus Christ – the eternal Son of God
V. Off___ of Love – “Whosoever;” Everyone; inclusive world wide invitation; individuals here and there
VI. Requirements of Love – “Believe;” trust; faith
“Believes in” us, believes that, believing that Christ died for our sins is not saving faith. Believing in the
Christ who died for your sins is saving faith.
VII. The Results (Effects) of Love – Not “perish;” destroy; ruin; disintegration; death; separation
“Everlasting life” – fulfilling, satisfying quantity and quality kind of life; opposite of death
VIII. Application of Love – The best way to spell love is “T-I-M-E”
Whenever you give your time, you are making a sacrifice. Sacrifice is the essence of love.
“Be full of love for others, following the example of Christ who loved you and gave Himself to God as a
sacrifice to take away your sins.”
Ephesians 5: 1,2
Dr. Robertson McQuilkin’s love for wife – a “sacrificial love”
“God so loved the world that He gave...” John 3:16
“Love means giving up – yielding my preferences, comforts, goals, security, money, energy or time for
the benefit of someone else.”
“You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.”
Rick Warren
