Welcome to the city of

Holdingford!

Whether you are coming for a visit or coming here to live, you will be welcomed in Holdingford! The City of Holdingford is located 10 miles north of Interstate 94, on County Road 9, (take the Avon exit). We are located on what we believe is the most beautiful section of the Lake Wobegon Trail. From our Lake Wobegon Trailhead Park, you can bike south, through our covered bridge, which just happens to be the longest covered bridge in Minnesota, through the countryside, past Two Rivers Lake, on your way to meet up with the east and west section of the Wobegon Trail. Or from our Trailhead Park you can bike north to the Mississippi River Bridge and see Blanchard Dam below as you cross the bridge. In Veterans Park, we have a campground that will accommodate everything from tents to motor homes, playground equipment, skateboard ramps, lighted volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, a softball field and a park shelter that can be rented for get-togethers. Another popular attraction is the Soldiers Shrine, which is the first and oldest memorial in

the United States dedicated to the Veterans of World War II. For folks interested in calling Holdingford home, we have numerous developed building sites available, with amenities such as an excellent K thru 12 school system, restaurants, retail, parks, churches, civic organizations, several area lakes, and a Block Nurse program to help the elderly stay in their own homes as long as possible. For those wishing to start or move a business here, The City of Holdingford has industrial and commercial sites available, with tax incentives to help you get started. Please take a few minutes and look at our website www.holdingfordmn.us to see a great aerial view of Holdingford, and check out the interesting links for more details of our city. Please come and see us, THE WELCOME MAT IS ALWAYS OUT! Mayor Ernie Schmit

History of Holdingford

Klisch & Langset Store in Holdingford, early 1900s. Holdingford was named after pioneer Irishman Randolph Holding, who came to the area in 1868. He homesteaded on the west side of a ford area on South Two Rivers, where he started a general store and platted out his vision of the future village. In 1872, he was appointed first postmaster of “Holding’s Ford” located at his general store. The building still stands as a house today. At about the same time on the east side of South Two Rivers, the village of Wardeville townsite was platted and had five homes. In 1885, the first St. Mary’s Church was built by Scotch-Irish Catholics on the west side of South Two Rivers, as well as the first school across the road. The name of the post office was changed to HoldingFord in 1894, and moved to the east side of the river (Wardville) with Valentine Batz as Postmaster. Two years later, the village of Holding and Wardeville combined to be Holding Ford on August 22, 1896. Also the same year, Union Evangelical Church was started on the east side of the new village. In the early part of the 20th century, the village of Holding was a very energetic and thriving village as an economic business and social center for the area. From 1907-09, the Soo Line Railroad was built through Holding Ford, and in 1908 the local newspaper, The Advertizer, started publishing.

Mitchell’s Saw Mill, Holdingford, 1909. 1911 saw the beginning of St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, and in 1915 St. Mary’s Church was rebuilt on the east side, as the first church on the west side had burned down. A concrete bridge built in 1919 over Two Rivers helped advance Holding Ford to become the biggest trading center for miles around. The addition of the Congregational Church, started in 1921, added to the diversity of faith. After several earlier attempts to change the name of the village, finally in 1930 the name was changed from Holding to Holdingford, distinguishing the difference between the township and the village. During prohibition, Stearns County became a large producer of moonshine with a majority of the farmers in the area distilling spirits. Stearns County spirits made their way to Minneapolis, St. Paul, Chicago and Canada. The product was nicknamed “Minnesota 13” after the seed corn it was made from. Many say Holdingford was the unofficial moonshine capital of Minnesota. The Holdingford Soldier’s Shrine, built in 1942, was the first World War II memorial in the United States. In 1946, Konsor Welding was established, and eventually became DCI when it moved to Waite Park in 1965. In its heydays of the 1950s-60s Holdingford had: • 3 car dealerships. • 2 meat markets with groceries • 2 more grocery stores • 2 hardware stores • restaurant with bar, bowling, and dance hall • variety store • movie theatre • lumber yard • municipal liquor store • 2 gas stations • bank • legion club • funeral home 1949, Fun Center opened Oct. 22, A. J. Schroder.

Soldiers Shrine
On September 6, 1942, Holdingford, Minnesota dedicated the nation’s first shrine built to honor those who served in the United States Armed Forces, WWII, both abroad and at home. Dubbed as the largest and most spectacular religious event in the history of Holdingford, an estimated five thousand people were in attendance. The day’s ceremonies were opened by a town parade during which two flights of Taylor Cub airplanes flew in low formation over the line of march and dipped their wings in salute to the Flag. Harold E. Stassen, then Governor of Minnesota, gave praise to the countless volunteers making Father J. Kromolicki’s vision a reality and stated that, “The nation must hold true to the basic rights and precepts given them by God or a just peace would be but a vain hope. America with its grand freedom and its love of justice and truth must take the lead in obtaining a just and lasting peace and not merely an armistice.” Fred Schilpin, St. Cloud Daily Times, paid tribute to Father Kromolicki, pastor of St. Hedwig’s Church, for his vision and dedication to seeing this undertaking materialize. “This beautiful community’s Soldiers’ Shrine is the expression of his love and the love of all the people of Holdingford, Stearns County and central Minnesota for the defenders of democracy everywhere.” And in speaking of the shrine he stated that, “It will stand through the years as a loving patriotic tribute and a physical emblem of the faith of the whole community of Holdingford.” Statistics The Shrine was designed by Rev. Gilbert Winkelman, O.S.B., Dean of the School of Architecture at St. John’s University and constructed by Edward Feia, son Donald, and many parish volunteers. Over 540 loads of fieldstone from area farmers were used in the construction. Located in the corner lot directly across from St. Hedwig’s Church, the Shrine is 42 feet long, 18 feet wide, and 22 feet high. Four carved angels adorned with

trumpets stand in procession followed by a large statue of Christ the King. Plaques with names of over one hundred soldiers were at one time embedded into the walls of the shrine, but today are no longer visible. The four crosses on the shrine are in memory of four young men from Holdingford who died during the war; (1) Elmer Kerestes, Pearl Harbor, (2) Walter R. Mattson, St. Lo, France; (3) Walter Krystosek, Anzio Beach, Italy, and (4) Joseph Troxil, U.S. Navy who died at sea. Recently the crosses have been updated in stainless steel along with the addition of another which is dedicated to all men and women serving in our armed Forces. For seventy years, the Shrine nestled in the backdrop of Holdingford has been a symbol of community faith and pride for those who have served and are serving our country. This Shrine has been dutifully kept up by parishioners of All Saints-St. Hedwig and many members of the community of Holdingford. We call on you to visit the Shrine and take part in the history and pride of Holdingford.

Holdingford Sno-Flyers
The Holdingford Sno-Flyers were officially established in 1968. The Sno-Flyers were organized by a group of people that had a love of the winter outdoors. This group started meeting together, raised money and built one of the few snowmobile clubhouses in the state of Minnesota. The Sno-Flyer Clubhouse is located outside of Holdingford just off County Road 9. The two-story building hosts a bar and kitchen area, lounge areas, bathrooms and fireplaces on each level. It is open weekends December through March for passing visitors, snowmobilers, and ice fishermen to stop in for food and beverages. Fun Runs (Poker Runs) are held throughout the winter on Saturdays and Sundays and are enjoyed by young and old. The club belongs to state and federal snowmobiling organizations that are crucial for maintaining laws that protect snowmobiling and other outdoor recreation. The Sno-Flyers sponsor snowmobile safety classes that are held yearly for 12- to 18-year-old youngsters to learn the safe and legal way to ride snowmobiles. The club hosts an annual landowner appreciation dinner to thank landowners who permit snowmobile trails

through their land. An annual Vintage Snowmobile Run is also held yearly as a fundraiser and great get-together. The SnoFlyers have about 30 members and hold their annual membership meeting the third Saturday of October at 8 pm at the Sno-Flyers Clubhouse. If interested in joining or if you have questions, contact Sue or Doug Marstein at 746- 2787 or stop in at Jim’s Snowmobile & Marine and talk with Scott Paggen.

Recreation
Fishing and Hunting Fishing is excellent at area lakes. Pelican, Two Rivers and Birch Lakes, Pine and Little Pine Lakes, Ochotto Lake, Mary Lake, Lake Runey and Lower and Upper Spunk Lakes have a variety of fish, including walleye, bass, small mouth bass, sunfish, crappies, bullheads, northern pike, and perch. Public access is available for hunting. Deer, grouse, pheasants, and waterfowl are some of the game prevalent in this area. Skiing and Snowmobiling Cross country skiing is available along the Lake Wobegon Trail. There is a lot of snowmobile activity in this area. Official maps may be picked up at Jim’s Snowmobile and City Hall. Swimming The high school swimming pool has open swimming and classes through their Community Education program. Showers and lifeguards are available. Swimming at public beaches in area lakes is also available. Additional Recreation Additional Recreational opportunities exist within a short driving distance: St. John’s University offers a variety of activities including hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, nature walks, and birding. The university is located 13 miles southeast of Holdingford on Interstate 94. Three golf courses are available for those wishing to enjoy the greens. Fritz Panek’s golf driving range is a real unique experience. It is east on County Road 17 two miles then north on County Road 3. Located south of Holdingford three miles on County Road 9 is a very unique course as it uses the natural lay of the land and you may run into a cow now and then as it is also a pasture. Albany Golf Club is 10 miles to the southwest and is open to the public and offers a more traditional course. Bowling is available in Albany at Albany Bowling Lanes.

Parks
Veterans Memorial Park Located on the south end of Main Street, the park features picnic facilities including a shelter and tables, children’s playground, horseshoe pits, and volleyball courts. Lake Wobegon Trail

The Lake Wobegon Trail measures 54 miles in Stearns County. The Stearns County segment of the Lake Wobegon Trail extends from the Stearns/Todd County line to St. Joseph and from Albany to the Morrison/ Stearns County line. There is an additional 8 miles of Lake Wobegon Trail in Todd County. If you connect the Lake Wobegon Trail with Morrison County’s connecting Soo Line Trail and the Central Lakes Trail, which meets the Lake Wobegon Trail in Osakis, you have the LONGEST PAVED RAIL TRAIL in the country – over 120 miles long. The trail is open to bicycling, snowmobiling without studs, walking and rollerblading. The trail was built on two abandoned railroad corridors – the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and the Soo Line.

(320) 746-2232 900 5th Street, Holdingford, MN 56340 www.edline.net/pages/Holdingford_Public_Schools Nestled in the beautiful hills and woods of northern Stearns County, Holdingford Schools are located nine miles north of I-94. It consists of four communities; Opole, St. Anna, St. Wendel and Holdingford. The district facilities are conveniently located at one site. The secondary school was constructed in 1970 and in 1996 the elementary school was added. Current enrollment is about 1,100 students and remains steady. The school district has an excellent reputation because of the community and staff commitment to our students. Students are the centerpiece of the community. Evidence backs up this claim. The community supports the schools with an additional operating levy of $500 per student. Holdingford students consistently exceed the state averages in all categories of the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments. Holdingford’s Community Education Program is vibrant and responsive to our community. We provide classes throughout the year including summer recreation and swim lessons.

physicals, well-baby and well-child check-ups, and the time needed to manage the care of each patient as well as to establish new patients. Urgent care provides immediate care for acute, non-life threatening illness and injury and is a critical component of our health system. Some symptoms appropriate for urgent care include: upper respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, minor burns, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and acute sprains and strains. Cooperation between patients, their primary care providers, our emergency department and our urgent care team creates a network of care options that puts the patient in the right hands for the right level of care at the right time. COUMADIN CLINIC: The Coumadin Clinic helps patients monitor and manage the medication they take to prevent blood clots. Clinic hours are Monday through Thursday mornings. Providers have established guidelines for a registered nurse to check patients’ blood and adjust their dose of warfarin (Coumadin), as well as other medications patients may be taking or need (such as heparin shots or vitamin K, the antidote to Coumadin). DIABETES HEALTH COACH: The Diabetes Health Coach method is a personcentered approach to wellness, not just disease management. When you visit the health coach, the certified diabetes educator will get to know you as a person and work with you to create a personalized wellness plan that educates, motivates and empowers you. It is designed to help you find the tools within yourself to make positive changes in your behavior and lifestyles. Coaching appointments are Monday through Thursday afternoons.

of the services and facilities in order to serve the needs of patients in our service area. Through donations from families, individuals and organizations, the foundation builds partnerships between the area communities and AAHMC to improve area health. Currently the foundation is working on raising funds for a digital mammography unit. SWING BED PROGRAM Albany Area Hospital also offers a swing bed program. The transition to swing bed is after a three-day hospital stay and includes skilled nursing, physical or occupational therapy and medication administration, as well as a weekly visit by the patient’s attending provider. Patients in the swing bed program can be transitioned to AAHMC from any health care facility. A requirement is that the patient is actively participating in making progress towards established goals. The swing bed program allows our area residents to be close to home while patients maintain or return to their highest level of independence. The swing bed program offers rehab services to allow patients to “come back home” near their family and friends while they recover from major illness or surgery. By receiving services locally, patients can maintain ongoing contact with their friends and loves ones. The low staff-to-patient ratio provides for more personal contact during the recovery process. Our therapy staff is highly qualified and has a great reputation for delivering rehab services in a positive, caring manner, focused solely on making patients well.

HOSPITAL & CLINIC SERVICES The hospital and emergency department are open 24 hours a day. The emergency room is staffed with an on-call provider and trained registered nurses. Licensed practical nurses, nursing assistants, imaging and lab technologists and technicians are also available 24 hours, 7 days a week. In keeping with the commitment to provide exceptional and up-to-date patient care, Albany Area Hospital installed a bone density machine. osteoporosis. In addition to inpatient medical and surgical services, AAHMC continues to expand its surgery and outreach specialty services. Surgeries are performed on either an outpatient or inpatient basis. General, orthopedic, ophthalmology and urology surgeries are performed by surgeons from Little Falls and St. Cloud. Outreach specialty services include orthopedics, cardiology, stress testing, podiatry, urology, internal medicine, gastroenterology, MRI, mammography and nuclear medicine. Physical, occupational and speech therapies are performed by the AAHMC staff. COMMUNITY HEALTH The staff is active in sharing information on health care careers through high school students. Tours are given to kindergarten students and human anatomy classes as well as education presentations to students in the area schools. AAHMC has also collaborated with Dr. David Kroska to offer the L.I.F.E. (Lifestyle, Food & Exercise) program. L.I.F.E. program participants learn how many chronic diseases, including heart disease and cancer, are frequently associated with unhealthy food choices and a lack of physical activity. The eight-week educational program consists of two-hour seminars each week. Sessions provide extensive education on diet, exercise and nutrition, as well as practical and behavioral aspects of healthy living. The final session covers menu planning and food preparation tips. These sessions are held twice a year. The administration and the Advisory Board of Directors of the Albany Area Hospital and Medical Center are continuously developing strategies and looking for opportunities to enhance the services offered locally. In an effort to create a beautiful display of the history of Holdingford, funds are being collected to remodel the future site of the Holdingford Museum.
Be a part of the preservation effort by purchasing a limited edition of “The Ford in the River”, the history of Holdingford written and published by Father V. Yeserman in 1985. The book and “MN 13” T-shirts are available at local businesses in Holdingford and at City Hall.
